FEBRUARY 1, 2015 Our Lady of the Assumption Page 3 LENT ASH WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 18, 2015 Rules and Regulations Abstinence from Meat: All Catholics who have reached their 14th birthday are bound to abstain entirely from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent including Good Friday. There is no upper age limit for the requirement of abstinence. Fasting All Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are bound to observe the law of fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means limiting oneself to a single full meal and two smaller meals and avoiding food between meals. We are encouraged also to voluntarily fast other days during Lent. Sundays and Feast Days are not days of fast and abstinence (Feast days include St. Joseph, March 19th and Annunciation of the Lord) Dispensations from Abstinence and Fasting: We are not to consider ourselves lightly excused from the laws of Fast and Abstinence. However, with a good reason, one may excuse oneself but substitute another penitential practice to compensate. Easter Duty All Catholics who have received First Communion are required to receive Communion at least once during the Easter Season which includes the time between Ash Wednesday and Trinity Sunday. Catholics are also to receive the Sacrament of Penance once a year. If Confession is required before receiving Communion then that would be required during the Easter Season. One must be absolved from all mortal sins before receiving Communion. Wouldn t you think that our two priests would simply take a vacation and go to Poland instead of bringing a taste of Poland to Copiague? I like snow as much as anyone else but, really, was that necessary Father Dariusz? But, we must admit, Mother Nature does do a beautiful job of improving scenery. If we are to go by the clients that come to Outreach we know that jobs are not a dime a dozen. We have asked Home Depot to come to Our Lady of the Assumption and teach a Do-It-Yourself class to our parishioners. They have agreed to come and assist the unemployed by teaching a craft that will add a dimension to their resume. Employed men and women are also welcome to join the class in order to learn how to do odd jobs around the house. This gives an extra benefit-you will not only be able to save money by doing odd jobs yourself and-bonus!- you can brag about your accomplishments. As soon as we have the particulars on the when, where and whats involved, we will let you know. In the meantime, we expect a rush of hungry people to be at our doors this week as well as ones in need of boots and wool hats. If you have any extras hanging around the house, we will be glad to take them off your hands. 1 LUTEGO 2015 Page 10 Matka Boża Wniebowzięta WIELKI POST Zasady Wstrzemięźliwość od pokarmów mięsnych Wszyscy katolicy w wieku 14 lat i powyżej zobowiązani są do wstrzemięźliwości od pokarmów mięsnych w Środę Popielcową oraz we wszystkie piątki w okresie Wielkiego Postu, z Wielkim Piątkiem włącznie. Nie istnieje górna granica wieku dla tej zasady. Post Wszyscy katolicy w wieku od 18 do 59 lat zobowiązani są do zachowania postu ścisłego w Środę Popielcową i w Wielki Piątek. Oznacza to ograniczenie się do jednego pełnego posiłku i dwóch mniejszych posiłków w ciągu dnia oraz unikania podjadania pomiędzy posiłkami. Zachęcani jesteśmy także do dobrowolnego poszczenia w inne dni Wielkiego Postu. Niedziele i inne swięta nie są dniami postu i wstrzemięźliwości. (Do świąt tych zaliczają się Uroczystość św. Józefa oraz Zwiastowanie Pańskie.) Dyspensa od wstrzemięźliwości od pokarmów mięsnych i postu: Nie powinniśmy odstępować od powyższych zasad. Jednakże, w uzasadnionych wypadkach można zastąpić je innymi praktykami pokutnymi. Obowiązek Wielkanocny Wszyscy katolicy, którzy przyjęli Pierwszą Komunię Świętą, mają obowiązek przystąpienia do komunii św. przynajmniej jeden raz w okresie Wielkanocnym, tj. pomiędzy Środą Popielcową, a Niedzielą Trójcy Świętej. Katolicy powinni także przynajmniej raz do roku przystąpić do sakramentu pokuty. Jeżeli spowiedź wymagana jest przed przyjęciem komunii św., to wówczas należy przystąpić do spowiedzi w okresie Wielkanocnym. He Taught Them as One Having Authority... This week s first reading and Gospel speak to us of the authority of God. If a prophet presumes to speak in my name an oracle that I have not commanded him to speak... he shall die. In the Gospel, Mark tells us that Jesus astonished the people because he spoke as one having authority. The truths taught by Jesus have been carefully guarded by the Catholic Church for over two thousand years. A Catechism detailing these truths has recently been published. I am frequently surprised by Catholic friends and acquaintances who are great fans of non-catholic evangelists and authors. Do these Catholics know their Catholic Faith well enough to recognize theological errors? Why not seek out greater knowledge of the wonderful treasures that the Catholic Church has to offer? Last Fall we offered a series called Catholicism. Twenty five people attended faithfully. Where were the other hundreds? Where were the teenagers when Father Yanusz offered a Religion course to High School students? Our Catholic Faith is a great gift of God.
