When you start to learn a new language, you need to get ready to memorize hundreds of new words. There are plenty of memory techniques. Using flashcards is an interesting alternative for all students who are fed up with learning vocabulary lists by heart. Why will the flashcards improve vocabulary learning? Most of us think that learning new foreign words requires from us translating it to our language. However, translating might extend the process of memorizing and recalling. Why? Our brain needs more time to digest the combination of letters which are a symbol of an object, in order to create an image in our mind. Example: jabłko apple If we replace the translation with an illustration, our right hemisphere of the brain will be more active and the image will appear almost immediately. jabłko We think mainly using pictures, so why not to make our learning easier? What is on a flashcard? The flashcards are divided into categories. Each subject has 1-3 sheets which need to be printed out double-sided, in colour. Cut the sheets into small cards, according to the drawn lines.
On one side of the card you will find an illustration, on the other a Polish word (noun, adjective, verb, or a numeral.) Most of the words on the flashcards are nouns, under which you will find the plural form with the symbol. Example: stół - table stoły - tables Some nous exist only in plural. Example: nożyczki - scissors There are also nouns which appear mainly in the singular form. This concerns mostly uncountable nouns. Example: mleko - milk In the Jobs category female occupations (if in use) are presented with the symbol. Example: nauczyciel - teacher nauczyciele - teachers nauczycielka - female teacher nauczycielki - female teachers Verbs are presented with an inflection for person in singular and plural in the present tense. Example:
How to learn with flashcards? ja mówię I am speaking ty mówisz you are speaking on mówi he is speaking my mówimy we are speaking wy mówicie you are speaking oni mówią they are speaking Take 10 cards at the beginning. First get familiar with the words. Read them out loud and look at the illustrations. If you have doubts, what the picture is presenting, check in the attached vocabulary list at the end of the book. It is useful to prepare a box with four dividers for the flashcards. It will help you organize the cards and monitor your progress. Put your cards in the first compartment. Take a card one by one and guess the Polish word. If you give the correct answer, the card lands in the second divider. If you don t know the right word, the cards remain in the first deck. Go through the flashcards until all are moved to the next compartment. The next day revise all the cards. When you guess the word, move the card one deck forward. If you forget the Polish word, put the card back in the first deck. Revise the cards from the third compartment after a week, from the fourth - after a month. If you add 10 new cards every day, you will learn 300 new words in a month!
