A NOTE FROM OUR PASTOR My good People of St. Albert the Great: In November of 2011, I received a letter from the Office of the Mayor of Burbank, banning all carnivals in the City of Burbank. This came to me as a surprise, because I found our parish carnival to be a great community-building event. I felt that it helped to strengthen our community, as well as provide much-needed funds for our parish school. After a brief conversation with the Mayor in December, he assured me he would not change his mind on this subject. He felt that the carnival workers endangered the community. I brought the issue before our carnival committee to see what other community building events we might have and expressed my concerns about the financial loss for the school. We began to look at other fundraising events, as well as, the possibility of moving our carnival to another location. Two weeks ago, I and a few members of the carnival committee had the opportunity to meet with the mayor of Bridgeview, senator Landek, to see if the City of Bridgeview would be able to accommodate our carnival. Senator Landek was very kind and offered us a location in Bridgeview (79 th Street & Harlem Ave.). Our carnival committee readily accepted this offer. I am grateful for Senator Landek s kindness and support of our parish and school. Though the carnival will lose some of the community-building atmosphere that we always sought to built, it will still bring our parish together to work for and support our catholic school. Concerning our convent building, we are still in the process of working with the insurance company in regards to the repairs needed. I believe the convent will be closed for use until the middle of May. I have not heard any results yet from the police investigation. When further information is available, I will certainly inform you. I ask you to pray for the success of our parish carnival and please pray for those who severely damaged our convent. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By the First Sunday of Lent, many people have given up on giving up. Yet experiencing hunger for favorite things is a sign of a desire to face our deepest hungers. We do not embrace fasting as individuals, but rather as the community s way of life in this season. Sometimes it helps to see Sunday as an oasis in the Lenten desert, a place where fasting is not as strictly observed. If we count the days of the Lenten calendar, starting backward from the end of Lent on Holy Thursday, it is difficult to measure the forty days. Many are surprised to learn that the Sundays are counted as part of Lent, but are not counted in tallying the forty days of the Lenten fast. For that, we count the fast backward into last week, beginning on Ash Wednesday. So, until today we have been in the Lenten fast, days that function as a kind of overture to a symphony of conversion. Today Lent solemnly begins, marked in many places by the sending of catechumens and candidates to the bishop for the call to the Easter sacraments. Tomorrow with them, we embrace the Lenten fast again. Today we are exactly forty days from the opening of the Paschal Triduum on Holy Thursday. First Sunday Second Collection On the weekend of March 3/4 2012 we will take up Second Collection for the Parish Needs. You are important to the Lord. Come when you are hurting, you have fear, anxiety, pain and suffering of any kind. Come and spend time with Jesus Christ REPENT AND BELIEVE IN THE GOSPEL Lent is the time of year we devote to scrutinizing our lives in the light of our baptism into the death and resurrection of Jesus. Today s readings are a nice shorthand catechism of what our baptized lives mean. As Noah passed through the waters of the flood to a covenant with God, so did we enter into a covenant, a promised relationship with God through our baptism. Peter s letter gives an explicit explanation of what our baptism means: it is an appeal we make to God for a clear conscience. How do we obtain this clear conscience? The words proclaimed by Jesus immediately following his temptation show us the way: Repent, and believe in the gospel (Mark 1:15). It might be a good spiritual exercise to keep these readings before us throughout the entire season of Lent, a means to help us return to a life lived by our baptismal promises. Copyright J. S. Z biórka ks. Proboszcza Moi Drodzy Parafianie W listopadzie 2011 r. otrzymałem list z biura Majora Burbank informujacy o zakazie zabaw karnawałowych w miasteczku Burbank. Było to dla mnie dużą niespodzianką ponieważ wiem że karnawał zawsze był pozytywnym, budującym wspólnotę wydarzeniem. Pomagał on wzmacniać naszą wspólnotę i dostarczał tak bardzo potrzebnych funduszy dla naszej szkoły. Poczas krótkiej rozmowy w grudniu, Major zapwenił mnie że nie zmieni zdania co do podjętej decyzji. Oświadczył on, że pracownicy karnawału stanowią niebezpieczeństwo dla społeczeństwa. Przedstawiłem tą sprawę naszemu Komitetowi Karnawałowemu i poddalem myśl o znalezieniu innego rodzaju rozwiązania, aby wspomóc szkołę i zapobiec stratom finansowym wynikającym z zamknięcia naszego karnawału. Rozmawialiśmy także o nowym miejscu na karnawał. Dwa tygodnie temu razem z kilkoma członkami Komitetu mieliśmy okazję spotkać się z Majorem Bridgeview, Senatorem Landek, aby dowiedzieć się czy miasteczko Bridgeview byłoby w stanie udostępnić nam miejsce na karnawał. Senator Lindek był bardzo uprzejmy i zaoferował nam miejsce w Bridgeview przy ulicach Harlem i 79-tej. Nasz Komitet chętnie przyjął tą ofertę. Jestem wdzięczny Majorowi za jego życzliwość i wsparcie naszej parafii oraz szkoły. Atmosfera naszego karnawału zawsze była budująca, chcąc ją utrzymać pragniemy kontynuować to wydarzenie które jednoczyło naszą wspólnotę parafialną poprzez wspólną pracę dla dobra katolickiej szkoły im. Św. Alberta Wielkiego. Jeżeli chodzi o konwent, w dalszym ciągu pracujemy z firmą ubezpieczeniową nad ustaleniem skali napraw. Wygląda na to, że konwent nie będzie oddany do użytku aż do połowy maja. Nie znamy rezultatu dochodzenia które prowadzi policja. Zapewniam, że powiadomię was jak tylko informacje będą udostępnione. Proszę was o modlitwę za sukces naszego karnawału parafialnego oraz za tych, którzy zniszczyli nasz konwent, aby Chrystus ukształtowal ich sumienia by w przyszłości dokonywali jedynie słusznych i dobrych wyborów.
