A good source providing purported evidence of the existence of genetic diseases in the past, before their identification by medicine, are European artists paintings. Such paintings quite frequently depicted human anomalies and disorders. In this work we present the examples of paintings depicting people suffering from diseases such as Down Syndrome, spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenital, Marfan syndrome, myotonic dystrophy, Paget s disease and tetralogy of Fallot. Such representations have been used as the bases for hypotheses about past incidence, the place of handicapped individuals in a society, and the evolution of modern concepts of pathogenesis. Researchers notice the relationship between paintings and genetic disease. Some conditions have been seen with high frequently (such as Down syndrome), whereas others have rarely been noted [1, 2]. Paintings quite frequently depicted medical anomalies and disorders, including genetic ones whether clearly recognized as such or not by the artists concerned [3]. Certain well-defined congenital malformations and genetic disorders can be identified in paintings throughout the ages. Portraits of an artist him/herself, or of others, may intentionally or unwillingly document a congenital abnormality or genetic disorder in the subject. Such works of art provide a fascinating study for those with interests in the field as well as widening our enjoyment of paintings in general [4, 5]. Our work is focused on diseases (particularly genetic diseases) present in paintings. We have chosen and created the list of genetic diseases which were actually depicted in paintings. But we have to remember that the specific diagnosis is often not certain.

7 M. Laskowska et al. 7 Down Syndrome Down syndrome (DS) is the most common example of a neurogenetic aneuploid disorder leading to mental retardation. In most cases, DS results from an extra copy of human chromosome 21 producing deregulated gene expressions in the brain, that gives raise to subnormal intellectual functioning [6]. Down syndrome was the subject of a series of letters and, later, several articles discussing its depiction in various paintings of the 17th century and later. This disease carries the eponym of Langdon Down, who described the condition in 1866 in his monograph Observations of an Ethnic Classification of Idiots but was also described by Seguin and later by others [2, 7]. One of the earliest paintings of someone with Down s syndrome is a Flemish painting by an unknown artist The Adoration of the Christ Child (oil on wood, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA), which is dated approximately It shows an angel (next to Mary) and possibly one other figure, the shepherd in the centre of the background - with the syndrome. The diagnosis of Down s syndrome in the angel was based on a number of features: a flattened mid-face, epicanthal folds, up slanted palpebral fissures, a small and upturned tip of the nose, and downward curving of the corners of the mouth. The hands, crossed over the breast, have short fingers, especially on the left (Fig. 1) [8]. Beyond, The Adoration of the Christ Child, there are a lot of paintings by European artists providing purported evidence of the existence of Down syndrome before Down's identification. Among these there are instances of children whose appearances have been suggestive or firmly indicative of Down syndrome to some observers.

8 8 Genetic diseases in art paintings For example the painting by the a Carmelite monk Filippo di Tommaso Lippi Madonna della Humilita (tempera on wood, , Ambrosiana Library & Picture Gallery, Milan, Italy) show the representations of angels with some facial characteristics of babies with Down syndrome (Fig. 2). There is a hypothesis suggesting that the Down syndrome facial appearances of these baby angels likely was influenced by Lippi's early years in an orphanage where he could have seen rejected babies and infants with Down syndrome [3, 9, 10]. The child in a Madonna and Child with Seraphin and Cherubin (tempera on wood, 1460, Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA) painting, by a follower of the Italian artist Andrea Mantegna, might have cretinism, Down syndrome or both. As the evidence of Down syndrome we could list slant eyes, a small nose, an open mouth and adenoidal expression. A clearly evident additional feature is the wide space between the 1st and 2nd toes of the right foot, but, though common in Down syndrome, the feature is not limited to the syndrome [3].

Laskowska et al. 11 Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita Achille Emperaire, an artist and a friend of Paul Cézanne, was born in Provence in Emperaire s name was saved from oblivion only by the portraits Cézanne made of him. The most notable is the full-length portrait, more than six feet high, that hangs in the Musée d Orsay in Paris. In the painting, the dwarf-artist is seated in a large upholstered armchair with a flowered slipcover, his crippled body wrapped in a blue flannel robe, his outsized pensive face with fashionable moustache and goatee, and his spindly legs resting on a footstool. Above the chair, against the uniformly dark background of the canvas, a painted inscription in Bodoni-type lettering reads: Achille Emperaire Peintre (oil on canvas, , Musée d Orsay, Paris, France) (Fig. 3). The disproportionate nature of his dwarfism is apparent, along with a large forehead and a thick-set short trunk with long and thin extremities. The differential diagnosis for short-trunk disproportionate dwarfism includes metatropic dysplasia, Kniest dysplasia, Morquio syndrome and spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenita. All of these conditions are associated with normal intelligence [11]. Emperaire has a characteristic flat face with wide set eyes typical of spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia, in particular, the congenital form. The face is normal in the milder form and it is not associated with a severely short stature. Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasia congenital is suggested here by his short neck, pectus carinatum, and hands and feet of normal size comparing to the lengths of the limbs (rhizomelic and mesomelic shortening). The inheritance of this disease is by autosomal dominant transmission, but most cases are sporadic in nature and are caused by mutations in the COL2A1 locus on chromosome 12 [1, 11].

12 12 Genetic diseases in art paintings Marfan syndrome Marfan syndrome is an autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder characterized by a combination of clinical manifestations in different organ systems. Patients with Marfan syndrome whose lifetimes are extended may be encountered as acute abdomen (appendicitis) cases apart from the obligatory reasons and emergencies arising naturally out of their disease [12]. Formal diagnosis of Marfan syndrome demands characteristic skeletal, ophthalmological and cardiac abnormalities, or alternatively two of these three together with a clear family history of Marfan syndrome. Agosta and Rasha the Flugel Mensch the Schwaze Tube was painted in 1929 by a Bavarian artist Christian Schad. The title of this painting, which can currently be seen in the new Tate Modern gallery in London, has been incorrectly translated as the Agosta the pigeon-chested man and Rasha the black dove, when the dominating feature is pectus excavatum rather than pectus carinatum (Fig. 4). In the picture, both Agosta and his companion are looking out at the spectator with the serene expression of those used to public scrutiny. Looking at Agosta we can see deep pectus excavatum with outward deformities of the lower halves of the anterior rib cage. A long and thin thorax and a relatively long left arm can be observed. In addition, there is an obvious kyphosis or kyphoscoliosis affecting his shoulder girdle. The second and third fingers of his right hand are awkwardly positioned with hyperextension of proximal and distal interphalangeal joints suggesting joint laxity. His face is straight with slant down eyes [13].

Myotonic dystrophy Myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1), the most common form of muscular dystrophy in adults (1/8,000 individuals), is an inherited, autosomal dominant disease characterized mainly by myotonia (sustained muscle contraction), progressive muscle weakness (especially of distal limbs, the neck, and the face), muscle wasting, and variable multisystemic features. DM1 belongs to a growing group of genetic diseases caused by expansion of unstable microsatellite repeats. DM1 was shown to be caused by the expanded CTG repeat in the 3'-untranslated region (3'UTR) of the dystrophy myotonic-protein kinase (DMPK) gene in chromosome 19q [14].

14 14 Genetic diseases in art paintings In The Adoration of The Kings (oli on panel, 1564, National Gallery, London) painted by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, we can see Balthazar, the Moorish king, standing on the right and Casper kneeling at the lower left (Fig. 5). Melchior, tightly holding a golden pot of frankincense, shows bilateral facial drooping, partial ptosis and premature frontal balding, all the features of myotonic dystrophy [15]. Fig. 5. Paget s disease Paget s disease, also called osteitis deformans, is a disease of unknown etiology, but researchers have identified a gene that could possibly predispose to the disease. The familial clustering of Paget s disease is well recognized, about one third of the patients report having a first-degree relative with the disorder, with an autosomal dominant pattern of inheritance. Familial Paget s disease tends to occur earlier in life and be more extensive than

15 M. Laskowska et al. 15 the sporadic form. Two independent positional cloning studies demonstrated that mutations in the SQSTM1 gene are present in 40 50% of cases of familial Paget s disease [16, 17]. The initial lesion is one of the destructions by resorption, later the excessive amount of bone is deposited in a haphazard fashion with the diminution of the vascularity of the lesion. The new bone is of poor quality and may result in increased bone fragility and a tendency to fracture. The disease may be monostotic or polyostotic. When it is polyostotic, the bones most prominently affected are those of the axial skeleton which include the skull, the vertebral column, extremities and the maxilla. There is the progressive enlargement of the skull, bowing deformity of long bones and dorsal kyphosis (spinal curvature) [18]. There are studies on pagetoid lesions of the skull and clavicles in a painting A Grotesque Old Woman (oil on wood, 1513, National Gallery, London) attributed to Quentin Matsys ( ) (Fig. 6). Fig. 6. 16 16 Genetic diseases in art paintings The painting presents an old woman holding a rosebud. She is dressed in a costume with a large decolletage and a head dress of Italian fashion. The realism of each detail and the caricature-like face are most striking. The face is ugly, painfully accurate, neatly and smoothly executed with deformations, disfigurement, and distortions. The nostrils, for example, are odd, somehow more open, more flaring, and excessively arched. The broadness of the cheeks is accentuated by the ears, which stand out sharply from the head, and there is a bulging of the area beneath the nose. This broad and high cheeked face, with a wide coarse nose, gives the whole face an open, snorting look that has something of the wild animal about it-the lion. This typical face has been called by clinicians facies leontina, as seen infrequently in patients with Paget's disease and those with leprosy. Fig. 7. 17 M. Laskowska et al. 17 There is a theory that Matsys based his work on Leonardo da Vinci s drawings for his grotesque heads. This grotesque figure resembles odd and grotesque personalities like those seen in the margins of society and, therefore, it is most likely a portrait made from life. Several characteristic pathological features can be seen in these faces: in the upper and lower row rhinophyma, macroglossia, facies leontina, hawk's nose, and elongated skull. The heads of the middle row resemble old fashioned Florentine respectability and caesarean personalities [19]. Tetralogy of Fallot Tetralogy of Fallot (ToF) occurs in 3 of every 10,000 live births and constitutes approximately 7% 10% of all congenital defects. It is one of the most common causes of cyanotic heart disease beyond the neonatal age. The etiology is multifactorial and has been associated with maternal intake of retinoic acid, untreated maternal diabetes, and phenylketonuria. Chromosomal anomalies including trisomies 21, 18, and 13 have also been associated with ToF. More frequent, however, are the microdeletions of chromosome 22 [20]. Physical defects of this disease may be seen in a number of self-portraits, though sometimes the artist has taken great pains to conceal them. Dick Ket, who in series of self- portraits, clearly illustrated many of the clinical features associated with what is likely to have been Fallot s tetralogy with dextrocardia, finger clubbing, cyanosis and plethora. For example his self-portrait from 1932 (oil on canvas, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam, Netherlands) (Fig. 7). This painter eventually died of cardiac failure at the age of 38 [21].

The aim of this work is to present a summary of previous studies on visual disorders among the impressionist artists and attempt of analysis how their style was changing with the deteriorating state of the eyes. The diseases such as cataracts, shortsightedness, macular damage and eye infections impact their style and technique, the choice of color as well as the subject of painting. Key words: vision disorders, myopia, cataract, impressionist painters Streszczenie Artystów, tak jak wszystkich ludzi, dotykają różne choroby i szczególnie jest to widoczne, dla odbiorców sztuki, w przypadku zaburzeń widzenia. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie syntetycznej wiedzy na temat chorób oczu diagnozowanych u najsłynniejszych malarzy impresjonistów oraz próba wskazania, w jaki sposób schorzenia te wpłynęły na ich twórczość. Choroby takie jak zaćma, krótkowzroczność, zwyrodnienie plamki żółtej czy infekcje oczu odcisnęły piętno zarówno na stylu i technice ich malarstwa, doborze barw, jak i tematyce obrazów. 22 22 Ophthalmic diseases and impressionists Introduction A common interest among art historians, clinicians and scientists is the effect of diseases and illnesses on artist s work and its transformation as a consequence of the disease and therapy. It is natural that an ophthalmologist should develop an analytic attitude in regard to the visual capacities of artists and search for evidence of normal and abnormal sight as revealed in their paintings [1, 2]. The study of French painters has centered on impressionism because of the major importance of this movement in the evolution of art in the 19 th century. The canon of Major Impressionists include: Cassatt, Cézanne, Degas, Manet, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, and Sisley [3-5]. The majority of those painters suffered from ophthalmic diseases [6-8]. Cassatt The first example is Mary Cassatt ( ), an American impressionist who spent most of her adult life in France. She was diabetic, suffered from cataracts, and underwent multiple operations on her eyes, only to become unable to paint for the last dozen years of her life [9-11]. Cassatt's visual problems forced her to switch from oils to pastels. The precision in her early work is evident in her painting Lydia Crocheting in the Garden at Marley (oil on canvas, 1880, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA) (Fig. 1.). As her visual problems advanced, the meticulous lines became strident, bold strokes of color. This can be seen in her pastel Spring: Margot Standing in a Garden (oil on canvas, 1900, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA) (Fig. 2) [9].

23 Magdalena Bryś et al. 23 Cézanne Paul Cézanne ( ) was myopic and also suffered from diabetes. The myopic (or short-sighted) painter could see his canvas clearly but not the more distant object he was painting. Myopic impressionist painters often had their myopia under-corrected. They wanted to see the entire picture, not to see too many details in long-range landscapes [12, 13]. Cézanne s close-range are sophisticated like "Apples and a Pot of Primroses (oil on canvas, 1890, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA) (Fig. 3) or Still Life with Apples (oil on canvas, 1890, Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, Russia) (Fig. 4) while his long-range landscape paintings are less clear and more distorted for example Mont Sainte-Victoire (oil on canvas, 1890, Musée d'orsay, Paris, France) (Fig. 5). A person with normal vision would be able to see nature in the same way if he were to look through a positive lens or, in other words, if he were to make himself myopic [12]. Degas Edgar Degas ( ) probably had a progressive retinal disease that caused macular damage. Degas remained able to walk around comfortably late in life, which suggests that the damage did not involve the retinal periphery. There was no indication that he had cataracts, although these would have been easily recognizable and operable during his lifetime [14, 15]. Changes in Degas' style correlated closely with this progressive loss of vision. His works in the 1870s were drawn quite precisely with facial details, and attention to the folding of ballet costumes and towels, for example The Star (oil on canvas, 1871,

24 24 Ophthalmic diseases and impressionists Art Institute Of Chicago, Chicago, USA) (Fig. 6) or The Dance Class (oil on canvas, 1873, Musée d'orsay, Paris, France) (Fig. 7). As his visual acuity began to diminish in the 1880s and 1890s, he drew the same subjects, but the shading lines and details of the face, and clothing became progressively less refined. It s clearly to see on the series of paintings Women at the toilet. Starting from Woman Combing Her Hair (pastel, 1886, Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg, Russia) (Fig. 8) through After the Bath, Woman Drying Herself (pastels, , Courtauld Institute of Art Gallery, London, England) (Fig. 9) and ending on Woman Drying Her Hair (pastel on paper, 1905, Norton Simon Art Foundation, Pasadena, USA) (Fig. 10). He drew the same subjects, but the shading lines and details of the face, and clothing became progressively less refined. The same paintings were then blurred to the level of Degas' eyesight at the time of the painting. One study showed that the spacing of his shading lines increased in proportion to his failing visual acuity over nearly 3 decades. After 1900, these effects were quite extreme and many pictures seem shadows of his customary style [16-19].

Edgar's maternal first cousin, Estelle Musson, also suffered from gradual bilateral visual loss, and was also known to have light sensitivity early in her life. Estelle became totally blind in the age of thirty. It is likely that Degas and his cousin had a hereditary retinal degeneration primarily affecting their central vision. Degas' retinal disease undoubtedly affected his life and his art but did not prevent him from being one of the most admirable painters of all times [20]. Monet Claude Monet ( ) is the first painter to be called an Impressionist, is of particular medical interest because of the way failing eyesight due to cataracts affected his late style. He is the only artist whose works have been analyzed in multiple facets including the effect of his deteriorating vision on his late works. Light exposure itself is believed to be a contributing factor in agerelated visual deterioration and a risk factor for cataracts. This is especially pertinent in Monet s case, as he insisted on painting on a large scale en plein air

33 Magdalena Bryś et al. 33 under all weather and seasonal conditions to satisfy his fascination with the varying effects of sunlight on his subject matter. It is known from medical documentation and correspondence that he had cataracts that worsened steadily over the decade from 1912 to 1922 [21]. Even as early as at the age of twentyseven, Monet complained of trouble with his vision following long hours of painting in sunlight but refused to abandon outdoor painting despite medical advice. Slowly, progressive age-related cataracts manifested as yellowing and darkening of the lens that are directly visible to an examining ophthalmologist and have a major effect on color perception as well as visual acuity. After 1915, Monet's visual difficulties were becoming more serious. However, the yellowing of his lens caused a greater difficulty with his art than the blur. It is clearly visible in Monet's lily pond and the Japanese bridge at Giverny [18]. Water lily pond (oil on canvas, 1899, National Gallery, London, England) (Fig. 11) a painting of the pond and bridge before any visual symptoms, Water lilies (oil on canvas, 1915, Museum Marmottan, Paris, France) (Fig. 12) painted with moderate cataract, The Japanese Bridge at Giverny (oil on canvas, , Museum Marmottan, Paris, France) (Fig. 13) - this version was done with a predominance of orange. These late paintings are almost abstract in the applications of paint and show a predominant red-orange or green-blue tone that is quite different from the subtle color shading that characterizes Monet's earlier Impressionistic work. Like in the case of Degas, there is nothing in Monet's correspondence to suggest that he had any intention of mimicking the abstractions and distortions explored by other painters in the early 20th century [18, 22]. Monet s numerous ophthalmologists wanted not only to treat his cataract, but also to restore the very senses that he relied on to bring him joy and success

34 34 Ophthalmic diseases and impressionists in life. There was a misunderstanding of the goal of cataract surgery that resulted in Monet s profound disappointment with the procedure and depression. The changes in vision were not adequately discussed between Monet and his ophthalmologist, creating distress and tension in their relationship. The natural healing process combined with a clever optical lens to optimize color perception were successful in returning to Monet the vision he relied on to reproduce the beauty of life and nature [22-24]. Pissarro Camille Pissarro the dean of Impressionism, born in 1830, died in 1903 at the age of 73. His productivity during the last 15 years of his life was hampered by recurrent infections around his right eye. In that time the treatment consisted of incision and drainage of the lachrymal sac, and cauterization. Due to this chronic disease he was forced to paint inside, behind closed windows, in order to avoid wind and dust. This situation influenced the subjects of his painting. His painting reflects large crowds Paris avenues and buildings [25]. Lachrymal problems were a popular topic in France in Unfortunately for Pissarro, he never met an Italian surgeon, Toti, who developed modern lachrymal surgery during Pissarro's lifetime. In 1904, the year following the artist's death, Toti published his method of dacryocystorhinostomy [26]. It is difficult to find portraits of impressionist painters in glasses. However, Pissarro is one of those painters who have at least two self-portraits in glasses. The first is from and the second is from 1903 (oil on canvas, Tate Gallery, London, England) (Fig. 14).

35 Magdalena Bryś et al. 35 Renoir August Renoir ( ), despite his mild myopia, never wore glasses. His close-range paintings are distinct, while his long-range paintings are impressionistically blurred [12]. Myopia and hypermetropia have had also been said to have a direct influence on the preponderant color that the artist used. The myopia with his abnormally elongated eye will see reds better while the hypermetropia will be correspondingly better on blues. Thus, the increasing fascination for reds in the case of Renoir may simply be due to the disorder. Curiously enough, the colors from the red end of the spectrum predominate in the paintings of the Chinese and Japanese, who are also predominantly myopic. The Japanese have only recently adopted a specific word for blue [27]. Conclusions It is generally agreed that many painters suffered from eyes disorders. It is impossible to document all the painters with refractive errors. Our article focused on a well-defined group of painters in order to identify those artists who had an ophthalmic disease. We show how major eye diseases - myopia, hypermetropia, cataract and retinal disease - have their effects on artist's work. Interestingly, many of the impressionists were myopic and did not wear glasses. The impressionists wanted to convey subjective sensory impressions, attempting, as they put it themselves, to capture a retinal image in flight. Probably ophthalmic diseases influenced their paintings, the form and the use of colors. We can only speculate about the possible effect of various acquired or inherited eyes disorders on this artistic school in particular.

Źródliska na terenie PKWŁ tworzą środowisko (ekosystemy) charakteryzujące się znaczną różnorodnością fitocenotyczną, florystyczną i faunistyczną. Źródliska te zachowały najczystszą klasę czystości (wody oligotroficzne). Zanotowano obecność najpospolitszych dla tej klasy wód saprobów: mszaki z rodzaju Brachythecium, kiełż zdrojowy (Gammarus pulex) oraz typowe zbiorowiska okrzemek. Obecnie tereny przyległe do PKWŁ poddawane są silnej antropopresji, której skutkiem może być zanieczyszczenie wód podziemnych w tym regionie. Abstract On the basis of the example of the nature reserve "Struga Dobieszkowska" (RSD), the occurrence of natural areas such as midforest springs and streams found in Lodz Hills Landscape Park (LHLP) are discussed. The springs in the area of LHLP create ecosystems characterized by significant phytoenosic, floral and faunal diversity. At present the areas adjacent to LHLP are subjected to significant anthropopressure which can result in the contamination of groundwater in this area. Key words: the Lodz Hills, springs, oligotrophic water. Wstęp Rezerwat przyrody o nazwie Struga Dobieszkowska (RSD) jest położony w granicach Parku Krajobrazowego Wzniesień Łódzkich (PKWŁ) na terenie gminy Stryków (powiat zgierski) [1]. RSD został utworzony w 1990 roku w celu ochrony konserwatorskiej jednego z najcenniejszych obszarów źródliskowoleśnych w regionie łódzkim i obejmuje tereny o powierzchni 37,65 ha położone wzdłuż naturalnego cieku wodnego (strumienia) - Struga Dobieszkowska (Młynówka) zasilanego wodami licznych wypływów wód podziemnych (Ryc. 1). Rezerwat obejmuje 3-kilometrowy odcinek Młynówki, wraz z południowo-wschodnim zboczem doliny Młynówki, która od źródła do swojego ujścia (lewy dopływ) w rzece Moszczenica, liczy około 4,2 km [1-3] (Fot. 1). Celem pracy jest przedstawienie na przykładzie rezerwatu Struga Dobieszkowska (RSD), obecności na terenie PKWŁ naturalnych obszarów przyrody jakimi są śródleśne źródliska i strumienie, które tylko w niewielkiej obszarowo części są objęte prawną ochroną, np. poprzez utworzenie rezerwatów przyrody. W pracy przedstawiono także wybrane elementy fizycznogeograficzne regionu, na którym znajduje się RSD. Przedstawiono również wybrane gatunki organizmów wskaźnikowych występujących w źródliskach na obszarze RSD. Aktualnie tereny przylegle do PKWŁ poddawane są silnej antropopresji,

41 A. Mordalska, M. Witczak, T. Ferenc 41 co może prowadzić do postępującego zanieczyszczenia wód podziemnych w tym regionie. Źródliska śródleśne to ekosystemy szczególnie wrażliwe na wszelkie zmiany siedliskowe i ingerencję gospodarczą. W przypadku rezerwatu Struga Dobieszkowska naturalną formą ochrony (buforową) oddzielającą źródła od wpływów zewnętrznych są otaczające basen źródliskowy lasy grądowe [8]. Natomiast wokół parku Krajobrazowego Wzniesień Łódzkich wydzielono obszar ochronny (otulinę) o powierzchni ha. Plan ochrony PKWŁ został ustanowiony Rozporządzeniem Nr 5/2003 Wojewody Łódzkiego z dnia 31 lipca 2003 r. Źródła i źródliska Najważniejszym czynnikiem kształtującym procesy hydrologiczne i obieg wody jest rzeźba i budowa geologiczna, która w przypadku regionu łódzkiego jest stosunkowo dobrze poznana [3-6]. W porównaniu do innych obszarów środkowej Polski, obszar podłódzki, a szczególnie północna część powierzchni Wyżyny Łódzkiej nazywanej strefą krawędziową Wyżyny Łódzkiej obfituje w liczne źródła i wycieki [2, 3]. Wydajności pojedynczych źródeł wynoszą od 0,03 do 4,0 dm 3 s -1, z czego około 50% stanowią źródła o małej wydajności 0,1 do 1,0 dm 3 s -1 [2, 3]. Źródło to naturalny, skoncentrowany wypływ wody podziemnej na powierzchnię terenu [7, 8]. Natomiast rozproszonymi formami wypływu są wycieki i wysięki [3, 7]. Z kolei charakterystyczny układ kilku lub kilkunastu źródeł zlokalizowanych blisko siebie składa się na tzw. źródliska [7-9]. Przyjmuje się również nazywanie źródliskami podmokłych nisz skupiających oprócz źródeł, także wysięki, wycieki i stałe młaki [3].

42 42 Wody oligotroficzne w źródłach rezerwatu Struga Dobieszkowska Rozmieszczenie źródeł w strefie krawędziowej Wzniesień Łódzkich Obszar najliczniejszego występowania wypływów wód podziemnych w strefie krawędziowej Wyżyny Łódzkiej rozciąga się od okolic Zgierza przez Łagiewniki, Skoszewy, Brzeziny do Jeżowa [2]. U podnóży stopni krawędziowych Wzniesień Łódzkich ponad 90% wypływów skupionych jest na wysokości m n.p.m (poziom morfologiczny II - smardzewski i III strykowski) [2, 3]. Przy czym, najwięcej wypływów jest położonych na wysokości m n.p.m. [3], a o największych wydajnościach notowane są na poziomach m n.p.m [10]. Natomiast w obrębie najwyższych kumulacji Wzniesień Łódzkich (powyżej 210 m n.p.m.) źródła nie występują [3]. Ze względu na cechy morfometryczne i cechy budowy geologicznej region obejmujący RSD jest zaliczany do poziomu II morfologicznego - smardzewskiego, o wysokościach m n.p.m. [2, 3, 11]. Źródła funkcjonujące w obszarze RSD zasilane są z utworów fluwioglacjalnych zlodowacenia warciańskiego. Wodonosiec wykształcony jest w piaskach i żwirach wodnolodowcowych dolnych i górnych oraz w utworach moren spiętrzonych glacitektonicznie [12, 13]. W rezerwacie Struga Dobieszkowska funkcjonuje wiele naturalnych wypływów wód podziemnych, cechujących się na ogół niewielką wydajnością, które często układają się w linię źródeł,,schodzących wraz ze spadkiem doliny towarzysząc strumieniowi Młynówka [8, 12, 13]. Naturalne wypływy funkcjonujące na zboczu doliny charakteryzują się większą wydajnością (0,3-1,9 dm 3 s -1 ) [2] i tworzą w wyniku procesów erozji bocznej, wstecznej i wgłębnej wklęsłe zagłębienia terenu zwane niszą źródliskową [2, 9 13].

43 A. Mordalska, M. Witczak, T. Ferenc 43 W dnie niszy często tkwią liczne głazy, co przypomina rodzaj kamiennego bruku tzw.,,kamieńce [2]. (Fot. 2). Jakość źródeł w strefie krawędziowej Wzniesień Łódzkich Wody źródeł północnej części Wzniesień Łódzkich cechuje niska mineralizacja ogólna (do 400 mg/dcm 3 ), a ich odczyn jest zbliżony do obojętnego (średnio 7,2-7,8 ph). Średnia temperatura źródeł wynosi od 8,5 do 9,2 C. Są to wody miękkie i średnio twarde o wyraźnej przewadze twardości węglanowej i klasyfikowane jako wody wysokiej jakości (klasa Ib). Dominują tu dwa główne typy hydrochemiczne: HCO 3 -Ca i HCO 3 -SO 4 -Ca [3]. W niektórych wypływach stwierdza się przewagę anionu siarczanowego: typ SO 4 - HCO 3 -Ca. Inny skład jonowy z reguły wskazuje na antropogenizację zlewni podziemnej źródła i zanieczyszczenie jego wód [3]. Wody oligotroficzne ekosystemu źródliskowego W źródliskach wody podziemne nie będące optymalnym środowiskiem życia, ulegają przeobrażeniu w kierunku wód powierzchniowych, w których mogą się rozwijać różne formy życia [11]. Źródliska tworzą środowisko (ekosystemy) charakteryzujące się znaczną różnorodnością fitocenotyczną, florystyczną i faunistyczną [8]. Wody oligotroficzne to wody czyste źródła, potoki i jeziora górskie. Są to wody przejrzyste, bez smaku i zapachu, dobrze oświetlone. Charakteryzują się doskonałym natlenieniem, brak w nich dwutlenku węgla. Odczyn wody (ph) wynosi około 7. Rozkład związków organicznych jest wyłącznie tlenowy butwienie i nitryfikacja [14, 15]. Wskaźnik BZT 5 waha się w granicach

44 44 Wody oligotroficzne w źródłach rezerwatu Struga Dobieszkowska 0,5-3,0 mgo 2 dm -3. Ten typ wód określany jest jako tzw. wody głodne. Związane jest to z brakiem w nich ogniw producentów. Gatunki zasiedlające te wody są bardzo nieliczne, niewielka jest także liczebność osobników w obrębie gatunku [14, 15]. W wodach oligotroficznych występują nieliczne bakterie, głównie bakterie żelaziste. Wśród glonów dominują zielenice i okrzemki [15]. Glony źródeł są dobrymi organizmami wskaźnikowymi, szczególnie w tym celu preferowana jest grupa okrzemek, które żyją i rozwijają się w wąskim zakresie zmienności warunków środowiskowych [16]. Okrzemki są najszerzej rozprzestrzenionym przedstawicielem bentosu i peryfitonu wód płynących [14]. Różnicom w ich rozmieszczeniu, związanym z prędkością przepływu, odpowiadają różnice w ich pokroju i budowie. Większość gatunków okrzemek żyjących w szybko płynących wodach jest wydłużona i przyczepia się do kamieni podłoża lub do roślin [14]. Okrzemki dominują w zbiorowiskach glonów występujących w źródłach oraz odgrywają dominującą rolę wskaźnikową wobec parametrów środowiska, takich jak: temperatura, odczyn wody, zasolenie, saprobowość, trofia, warunki tlenowe, szybkość przepływu wody [11]. Zbiorowiska okrzemek źródeł rezerwatu Struga Dobieszkowska są zróżnicowane pod względem jakościowym jak i ilościowym [11, 12]. Należy podkreślić, że skład gatunkowy okrzemek zależy w dużej mierze od statusu troficznego cieku wodnego np. oligotrofia, mezotrofia, eutrofia [11]. Taksonami okrzemek bentosowych, stałymi i dominującymi w trzech źródłach RSD zarówno przykorytowych, jak i zboczowych są: Planothidium lanceolatum (Brebisson) Lange-Bertalot, Planothidium frequentissimum (Lange-Bertalot) Lange-Bertalot, Cocconeis pseudothumensis Reichardt, Amphora pediculus (Kȕtzing) Grunow, Staurosirella pinnata (Ehrenberg) Williams & Round [13]

45 A. Mordalska, M. Witczak, T. Ferenc 45 oraz dominująca w jednym ze źródeł (Dobieszków rzędna terenu 174 m n.p.m.) Navicula joubaudii Germain [11]. Pospolitymi gatunkami w wodach oligotroficznych są mszaki z rodzaju Brachythecium Schimper (Fot. 3). Pospolite oligosaproby zwierzęce wód nizinnych to: kiełż zdrojowy (Gammarus pulex) Linnaeus (Fot. 4), larwy jętek i chruścików [15, 17]. Podsumowanie Emisja zanieczyszczeń do środowiska w regionie przyległym do Parku Krajobrazowego Wzniesień Łódzkich (PKWŁ) nie omija także środowiska wodnego. Antropopresji poddawane są lokalne rzeki, cieki i zbiorniki wodne, jak również wypływy wód podziemnych. Źródliska funkcjonujące na terenie PKWŁ zachowały najczystszą klasę czystości (wody oligotroficzne) z charakterystycznymi dla tych wód gatunkami saprobów. Liczni autorzy z kilku łódzkich ośrodków opublikowali wiele prac oryginalnych i poglądowych dotyczących stanu aktualnego i kierunków przemian stosunków wodnych oraz antropogenicznych zmian jakości wód w regionie łódzkim. W prezentowanej pracy poglądowej omówiono i zacytowano tylko wybrane publikacje, z szerokiego grona autorów, zajmujących się tą problematyką.
