1 The Karol Lipiński Academy of Music in Wrocław would like to invite young trainee choir conductors to compete for the title of the best conductor of the 5th International Choir Conducting Competition TOWARDS POLYPHONY, which will be held by the Academy s Department of Music Education and the Municipality of Wrocław between 14th and 17th December 2011 in Wrocław, Poland. We are proud to announce, that Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Bogdan Zdrojewski, President of Wrocław, Rafał Dutkiewicz, Rector of the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music, dr hab. Krystian Kiełb AM prof., Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany and Honorary Consul of Italy, Monika Kwiatosz took Honorary Patronage of the 5th International Choir Conducting Competition 'TOWARDS POLYPHONY'. The main purpose of the event is to promote young, exceptionally talented choir conductors from Poland and other European countries. The Competition programme includes world famous choral works, with Polish compositions among them. Young trainee conductors will be able to show their skills and ability in working with choral ensembles and will be offered a unique opportunity to be evaluated by an international jury composed of eminent specialists in choral music. The Competition will be a wonderful chance to establish interesting artistic contacts, to enrich your repertoire with new works and to familiarize yourself with the most enchanting sites of Wrocław one of the most beautiful cities in Poland. 2 COMPETITION REGULATIONS 1. ELIGIBILITY TO PARTICIPATE The Competition is open to young choir conductors, representatives of Polish and European artistic schools of higher education; students and graduates born after 14 December REQUIRED DOCUMENTS a) a completed application form (enclosed) b) an artistic biography of the candidate (including, if any, reviews, copies of diplomas, awards or honourable mentions) c) a current photo recorded in an electronic form on a CD/DVD or sent by (to be used in the competition programme and press releases) d) a copy or a scan of a legal document stating the candidate s age and nationality (ID, passport) e) a xerox copy or a scan of a diploma of graduation from a university/academy of music or a certificate attesting to the candidate s student status f) a 15-minute long DVD recording of a working session with an ensemble (a rehearsal or a performance) made in the last two years A letter of recommendation from the candidate s school signed by the Rector/Head of the school (nor required, but may prove an asset). 3 3. SELECTION OF CANDIDATES The Committee will select 16 candidates for the First Stage of the Competition on the basis of the entries sent by the candidates. The Committee may set up a list of stand-by participants. The Committee will consist of representatives of the choir conducting profession/university professors. The Committee will be chaired by the Head of the Faculty of Choral Music of the Academy of Music in Wrocław. The candidates qualified for the First Stage will receive a written confirmation by 10 July The list of successful candidates will also be posted on the Academy s website: 4. FEES The candidates admitted to the Competition are expected to pay the competition fee amounting to 50 EUR (or its equivalent in PLN) by 31 July 2011 to: Wrocław pl. (BIC: WBKPPLPP) IBAN PL Originator-to-beneficiary information: W STRONĘ POLIFONII A failure to pay the competition fee will be regarded as the candidate s decision not to participate in the Competition. The competition fee will not be returned if the candidate decides not to participate in the Competition after he/she made the payment. The participants will be provided with accommodation during the time they participate in the Competition (since supper - 14 December till breakfast - 17 December). The organisers will not refund the travel costs.

4 5. STAGES OF THE COMPETITION The Competition will be composed of three stages, during which the candidate will be evaluated on the basis of his/her work with choir ensembles. First Stage (16 participants chosen on the basis of entries) Work with the Senza Rigore Choir operating at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music on ONE piece of music chosen by lot from the six works given in the First Stage programme. Time limit: 20 minutes for each participant. The draw will take place ONE DAY BEFORE the commencement of the First Stage of the Competition Second Stage (8 participants with the highest scores received during the First Stage) Work with the Consonanza Chamber Choir operating at the University of Technology in Wrocław on TWO pieces of music chosen by lot from the six given in the Second Stage programme (divided into two groups A and B). (Each participant will choose by lot one piece from group A and one from group B.) Time limit: 45 minutes for each participant. The draw will take place ONE DAY BEFORE the commencement of the Second Stage of the Competition. Third Stage (4 participants with the highest scores received during the previous two stages) Work with the Feichtinum Choir operating at the Karol Lipiński Academy of Music and a concert performance of THREE pieces of music chosen by lot from the six given in the Third Stage programme (divided into three groups). (Each participant will choose by lot one piece from each group.) Time limit: 60 minutes for each participant. The draw will take place ONE DAY BEFORE the commencement of the Third Stage of the Competition.

PRIZES The Jury may award the following prizes: 1 st PRIZE Cash award: 12,000 PLN Laureate Diploma 2 nd PRIZE Cash award: 6,000 PLN Laureate Diploma 3 rd PRIZE Cash award: 3,000 PLN Laureate Diploma DISTINCTIONS Under the Competition Regulations other prizes may be awarded. All participants will receive certificates confirming their participation in the Competition. Decisions of the Jury will be final.
