Gaudete means "rejoice!" Our Scriptures provide us with wonderful images of healing, restoration, and justice. St. James reminds us to be patient as the coming of the Lord is at hand. But it is the prophet Isaiah who provides the encouragement we so desperately need. Our world and our country are in need of peace. We long for God's justice, which does not bring retribution but equity. Isaiah shows us that if we walk with God all of these things can be ours, not only in the future but now. Church Decorating! 3 Third Sunday of Advent Gospel Meditation Encourage Deeper Understanding of Scripture "The blind regain their sight, the lame walk, lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised." Jesus has quite a résumé. When asked whether or not He is the long awaited Messiah, Jesus replies with this list of His credentials as proof of His position. These signs and wonders speak volumes, to be sure. But perhaps the most interesting line on the list is His concluding one, "the poor have the Good News proclaimed to them." Why does He count this among His litany of miracles? What is so remarkable about sharing Good News? Perhaps Jesus included this element of His work--the preaching of Good News--to remind His followers that the physical healings were not the ultimate goal of His mission. Rather, the spiritual healing that comes from hearing the Good News of salvation is what Jesus was really about. The "poor"-- which in a sense means all of us sinners, trapped by the poverty of the sins that enslave us--are freed by Jesus' message of a loving God who wants to bring us into His Kingdom. Our poverty is erased by His richness. His Mercy "undoes" our sin and we are invited to become the children of God who share in the glories of His heavenly abode. Sometimes it's tempting to just want the visible miracles. But the invisible ones--the conversions that take place in the silence of the human heart--are truly the more important works of God. Such interior transformation is what leads us to eternal life; even a physical cure won't last for eternity--death still comes at some point. But the really Good News is that this miracle of conversion is available to all of us. And this season of Advent is the perfect time to let God work His miracles in our hearts. Christmas Flowers Collection this Weekend! Worship in our Church during the Christmas Season is an experience of beauty. Every member of the parish is invited to contribute to the beauty of our worship. We all received in the December envelope packet an envelope for Christmas Flowers. The second collection this weekend is for Christmas Flowers to decorate our church for coming of Jesus and this collection will also be ongoing. Flowers may be given in honor, memory, in thanksgiving of a loved one, or celebration for people or events that are important to that donor. Luminaries for the Lights of our Lives This Christmas we will be praying for all our loved ones who are celebrating Christmas with all the angels and saints in the Heavenly Kingdom. Remember them with a luminary. The soft glow of light will be a reminder that our beloved deceased family and friends are surrounding us at Mass and praying with us and for us. Please include the name of a person (in memory of) for each luminary. $5 for one. $3 for each additional luminary. All proceeds will go towards the Roof Campaign and CMA. Annual Opłatek Dinner Dance The annual Oplatek Dinner Dance will be held on Saturday January 7, Tickets can be purchased at the Rectory, Polska Chata, Polish Federal Credit Union or after the Masses in the Church. The music will be performed by Dariusz (JANTAR) and our Polish Children will put on a presentation for us at 6:30 pm. Tickets are only $25 per adult, $15 per student and children under 7 free! 4 Trzecia Niedziela Adwentu Trzecia Niedziela Adwentu jest tradycyjnie nazywana Niedzielą Gaudete. Nazwa pochodzi od pierwszego słowa antyfony na wejście Gaudete in Domino, czyli Radujcie się w Panu. Niedziela Gaudete to swego rodzaju obwieszczenie bliskości Zbawiciela, co stanowi jednocześnie zaproszenie do radości. Dzisiaj nie uważa się Adwentu za czas pokutny, akcentuje się raczej pełne radosnej tęsknoty oczekiwanie, dlatego też nie przywiązuje się już takiej wagi jak kiedyś do niedzieli Gaudete. Chociaż tradycja niedzieli Gaudete jest bardzo cenna. Temat radości ze spodziewanego przyjścia Zbawiciela jest obecny w tekstach liturgicznych tego dnia. Ewangelia (Mt 11, 2-11) wprawdzie nie mówi wprost o radości, ale Jezus w odpowiedzi na pytanie św. Jana Chrzciciela o to, czy jest On faktycznie tym, który miał przyjść, wskazuje na znaki podobne do tych o których pisał Izajasz: niewidomi wzrok odzyskują, chromi chodzą, trędowaci doznają oczyszczenia, głusi słyszą, umarli zmartwychwstają, ubogim głosi się Ewangelię, po czym dodaje: a błogosławiony (czyli: szczęśliwy) jest ten, kto we Mnie nie zwątpi. Wspólnota kościelna rozumie znaczenie wyjątkowego charakteru Adwentu jako czasu przygotowania do przyjęcia prawdy o Wcieleniu Boga. Dlatego też umieszcza ona adwentowe niedziele wysoko w tabeli pierwszeństwa dni liturgicznych. Radość płynąca ze zbliżających się świąt nie wynika z emocjonalnych uniesień, lecz bierze się z autentycznych religijnych przeżyć. Sam Adwent zaś ukazuje nam prawdziwą radość bycia chrześcijaninem, który oczekuje pojawienia się swojego jedynego Pana. Kwiaty na Boże Narodzenie W czasie Świąt Bożego Narodzenia nasz Kościół jest zawsze bardzo pięknie udekorowany dzięki dobroci, ofiarności i serdecznosci Parafian. Kwiaty można ofiarować dla uczczenia swoich zmarłych lub specjalne intencje. Druga taca w tym tygodniu, Grudnia jest przeznaczona na kwiaty. Ofiary na kwiaty także można przynieść do Biura Parafialnego. Dziękujemy bardzo. Opłatki Opłatki są do nabycia w biurze parafialnym w godzinach urzędowych (9:00 do 2:30) i po Maszach św. (Sobota i Niedziela) w kościele. Ostatni dzień do kupienia opłatków jest Piątek, 23-go Grudnia. Biuro Parafialne będzie zamknięte w Sobotę, 24 Grudnia w Wigilię Bożego Narodzenia. Catholic Traditions Explained Question: On many Sundays, especially during Advent and Lent, we hear a reading from one of the prophets. What is significant about them for us? Didn't Jesus fulfill all their predictions? Answer: Lent and Advent are the times of the Church Year when the prophetic word forms an important part of the liturgical season. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Baruch, and Zephaniah are just some of the prophets who offer powerful and essential lessons for Christians of any era. Prophets do not predict the future; they are very much concerned about the present, calling Israel to follow once again the Word of God. The prophets speak on behalf of God. All of them testify that the Word spoken is not from them, but from God. This lands them in trouble, at times, with their audience. People did not like the message because of their sinful lives and their displeasure was taken out on the prophets. While tempted at times to throw in the towel, the prophets remained true to the life of faith and persevered in the proclamation of God's Word. In modeling these virtues and calling us to greater fidelity, the prophets offer an example and message that are still important to us today.
