Prágai A. Kovács EPISTEME 18/2013, t. 2 s ISSN SOME HUNGARIAN BREEDER OF ALPACAS Abstract. New World Camelids (guanaco, vicuna, llama, alpaca) origin from South-America. The native americans keep the alpacas because of it s meat, and fine wool. The alpaca fleece is internationally recognized as the one of the most luxurious fibers in the world. It s warm, soft, lightweight, strong, durable and easy to colour it. Nowadays you can find them round the World, for example Africa, Asia, Europe. In Hungary more and more people start to breed alpacas. The first breeders start the farm in They live in Jobaháza and they keep the huacaya type of the alpacas. The other breeder can be found near Békéscsaba. They have the other type of the alpaca, the suri. They started the farm in There is three other breeders in Hungary: in Mezőtúr, Balassagyarmat and Balatonszentgyörgy. Key words: alpaca, breeder, Hungary. 8 9

Kovács Some hungarian breeder of alpacas INTRODUCTION The New World camelids include four closely related species that can successfully interbreed: the wild guanaco (Lama guanicoe) and vicuna (Vicugna vicugna) and, the domesticated, lama (Lama glama) and alpaca (Lama pacos) (Mondini, 1995, Wernery 2002). It s accepted that alpacas domasticated from the shyer, smaller vicuna (Bromage, 2011). The geographic origin of this species includes Peru, Bolivia and Chile (Morante, 2009). Estimated population of alpacas in Peru more then 3 million, in Australia more then 5000 and in Europe round 2000 (Torres, 1992). In the Andean region of Bolivia, the population of alpacas is round 456,784 specimens, in the year of 1995 it was round 300,000 (Torres, 1992, FAO, 2005). Safley (2003) wrote that European countries (example Italy, France, Germany etc.) have less than 3000 alpacas. There are two basic breeds of alpacas classified by fleece type: the huacaya and the suri. The huacaya fiber has a sheep-like woolliness, and the suri fiber is more straight with only a slight wave and is lustrous (Hoffman 1995, IAA, 2000). Alpacas are not pack animals, they selected for dense, long coat which cover legs and neck too. Usually people shear them in every year (Bromage, 2011). The fiber is flexible, easy to paint, soft and hypoallergenic. It caused the absence of lanolin and other oils in the fleece. Alpaca clothing is really comfortable to wear (Shim 2003, Internet I). In former times, alpacas could have been met only in zoos in Hungary (Budapest, Szeged and Nyíregyháza). Lately, private persons have also purchased alpacas as a pet and not for economic purpose. Scilicet, people are not familiar with these animals, and many feel an aversion for them. As there is no demand for sheep fleece, many people see no earthly reason for keeping alpacas. In spite of this, the first alpaca breeder popped up also in Hungary in In subsequent years, several others have followed his example. Presently, the alpaca herds are small-sized and can produce few fleeces annually in spite of the demand of the wool industry. Consequently, the producers can sell the alpaca fleece only at the price of the sheep fleece. Following above our work introduced four alpaca farms of Hungary located at town Jobaháza, Békéscsaba and Bábolna, Balassagyarmat respectively. MATERIAL AND METHODS I met with the breeders personally, and I visited the farms. I asked them about the keeping, breeding and experiences with the animals. I noted down these informations and took pictures with camera about the alpacas and the different places. RESULTS Jobaháza This alpaca farm was the first to be established in Hungary in The animals belonging into the Huancaya type of Alpaca were introduced from the Netherlands. Presently, 3 mares, 3 young mares and 3 males are kept in the farm. The aim of the breeders is to familiarise people with the alpaca and its breeding so as to popularise the species in the country. Therefore, on farm courses are held annually for the interested people to get knowledge about the behaviour of alpacas, their keeping and breeding, where alpaca owners can pool of technical experience. Besides, the farm offers other services for the breeders. Such as is the import or sale of breeding or pet alpacas, their feedstuff, and fleece, as well as the covering and transportation of the animals. At Jobaháza, the run is partitioned to keep separately the mares from the stallions, and the stallions from each other. The same separation of animals is also possible within the boxes; the floor is littered with straw. The alpacas are herded to graze on a pasture but as they nibble the grass off to the root, a piece of the pasture is let rest. Besides grazing, adult alpacas are given 150 g concentrate (150 g per head per day) and also some hay. Suckling mares are fed with lucerne hay to improve their condition. Trimming of the toe nails is done at 3-month interval. Fleece is sheared in May. In the year 2013, February they bought two tried males from Australian bloodline. Békéscsaba The breeders had kept the Suri type of Alpaca on some hectares originally as a hobby. Their purposeful breeding began in The breeding aim is to shape a coloured herd (as this type is less frequent) 10 11

This goal can be realised by creating a pure bloodline and increasing the number of the herd to be sold for breeding or fancy purpose. In 2012, a mini herd comprising 4 mares, 2 stallions and 3 youngsters was kept in the farm. (The first specimens of Alpaca had come from Chile). Alpacas are provided with 2 ha of pasture, where males are kept in separate runs to avoid rivalry. Newly foaled mares are also kept separately. The same separation of animals is also possible within the boxes. The concrete floor is covered with polyethylene foam sheet (Polifoam) to keep animals warm and ensure their comfortable rest. The manure storage area is covered with straw enabling easy cleaning of the room. Mares usually foal in April-May; animals are sheared at this time. Trimming of the toe nails and teeth corrections are done parallel to shearing to minimise stress to the animals. Animals reside day-long in the run enabling their grazing at free access. Besides, they receive hay and complementary concentrate. The concentrate is compounded especially for alpacas and imported. Presently, the owners can sell the alpaca fleece to hand-workers at a lower price under compulsion. BáBOLNA The mini herd of Huancaya type consists of 6 animals including already the progeny. Animals are kept as a hobby. The area and the run are under improvement so as to ensure suitable accommodation for the animals (e.g., to separate the males from the mares) and provide the interested people with a spectacle. Since one half of the run is a part of the nearby arboretum the visitors may happen to see the alpacas as well. The breeding goal is to optimising the date of covering and foals to avoid winter foals caused a god deal of problems previously. Like other farms, the animals are day-long on the pasture without a fixed grazing season. As a general experience, alpacas do not graze the high grass but readily consume it mown down. Their other feeds include meadow hay, wheat, crushed corn, carrots, apple, sugar-beet, triticale, and salt lick. Trimming of the toe nails and teeth corrections are done parallel to shearing in May. In spring time animals are vaccinated against scabies, and in summer time they are protected from the mosquitoes using biological methods. BALASSAGyARMAT Animals are kept as a hobby. There is one male, one female and one young (female) alpaca. All alpacas are black coloured. The owner want to breed, but he not have enough animals in this time. He brings the alpacas on wool festivals. His aim to show, introduce these animals to people. CONCLUSION The alpacas get well acclimatised to the ecological conditions of Hungary. They consume readily the feedstuffs produced in the country. It is important to familiarise people with the alpaca and their benefits. The present herds cannot produce fleece in sufficient quantity saleable to the wool industry at a price equal to its quality. Expectedly, the more the breeder the higher the production of fleece and income will be. Gruczoł Nasonova (GN) występuje u Apis mellifera pomiędzy 6 a 7 segmentem grzbietowej strony odwłoka. Jego wydzieliny (cytral, nerol, geraniol, farnezol, kwas nerolowyi geranylowy) kierują zachowaniami rekrutacyjnymi. Celem pracy była morfometryczna analiza tkanki GN u letnich i zimowych pszczół A. m. carnica (Car) i Buckfast (Bcf). Po sfotografowaniu pszczół eksponujących GN w świetle dziennym i UV, wypreparowano błony międzysegmentalne odkrywając GN. Preparaty GN fotografowano (mikroskop stereoskopowy), a następnie użyto do określenia struktur międzysegmentalnych GN pod mikroskopem skaningowym oraz do wykonania pomiarów morfometrycznych różnych elementów tkankowych programem MultiScan Base. GN w świetle dziennym widoczny był jako jasny, a w UV, jako niebieski pasek. Błona międzysegmentalna była lekko pofałdowana i pokryta wypustkami, których długość wahała się 0,01 0,02 mm. Długość błony wynosiła 2,7 3,0 mm, zaś szerokość 0,4 0,5 mm. W 7. segmencie zauważono włoski, których długość wynosiła 0,04 0,06 mm. W trakcie rozwoju osobniczego grudki pojawiały się w liczbie parzystej 2, 4, 6, 8 itd. Nie zaobserwowano różnic w momencie powstawania grudek u letnich pszczół Car i Bcf, podczas gdy zaobserwowano je u pszczół zimowych Car i Bcf. Długość regionu kanalikowego w błonie międzysegmetalnej wynosiła 1,1 1,3 mm, zaś szerokość 0,2 mm. The Nasonov gland (NG) is situated between the 6 th and 7 th tergum on the dorsal side of the abdomen of Apis mellifera. Its secretion (citral, nerol, geraniol, farnesol, nerolic and geranic acids) regulates the apian recruitment behavior. The aim of this study was a morphometric analysis of NG tissues in the summer and winter A.m. carnica (Car) and Buckfast 14 15

9 Milena Bajda, Jacek Chobotow (Bcf) bees. After taking photographs of NG presented by bees in daylight and UV radiation, the intersegmental membranes were dissected to uncover the gland. The NG preparations were used to determine the structure of intersegmental tissue elements associated with NG under a scanning microscopeand and to perform morphometric measurements of different tissue components of NG with MultiScan Base software. NG was visible as a bright strip in daylight and a blue strip in UV radiation. The intersegmental membrane was slightly corrugated and covered with strands, which the length ranged from 0.01mm to 0.02mm. The membrane was 2.7mm 3.0mm long and 0.4mm 0.5mm wide. In 7 th tergum observed cilia, they were 0.04mm 0.06mm long. During individual development, lumps appeared in even numbers of 2, 4, 6 and 8 ect. No differences between the summer Car and Bcf bees were observed in the moment of lumps appearance, whereas in the winter Car and Bcf were observed. The length of the canal region in the intersegmental membrane was 1.1mm -1.3mm and its width was 0.2mm. Key words: Nasonov gland, intersegmental membrane, canal region, Apis mellifera worker-bee. Introduction The Nasonov gland (NG) is situated between the 6 th and 7 th tergum on the dorsal side of the abdomen of Apis mellifera workers. It is responsible for the secretion of pheromones which include compounds such as: geraniol, nerol, nerolic and geranic acid, (E)-citral, (Z)-citral and (E, E)-farnesol [Iwama et al. 1995; Slessor et al. 2005; Trhlin and Rajchard 2011]. The aromatic secretion of the gland with the characteristic smell of melissa can attract = bees which then gather up. Bees use this secretion to mark the entrance to the hive and various objects in the area, distinguish intruders in the hive and extraneous bees coming from other colonies [Al-Kahtani and Bienefeld 2011]. The workers present their NG when they have difficulty returning to their hive or they have lost their queen or they would like to enter another hive. Moreover, each colony has a specific smell bouquet which is common for citizen bees. The bouquet consists of the smell of the Nasonov glands of the workers and worker brood. The scent is also left by the workers on the queen and the entire nest [Dubiel 2006]. There are two types (subcastes) of worker bees in colonies: 1) summer bees which live for about 6 weeks, and: 2) winter bees which live for about 6-7 months. Moreover, there are differences between the subcastes relating to aging processes. Relevant transformations in the fat body and other gland structures, including key enzymes and pheromones, have been well described in previous studies, except for the NG. We should also consider differences between bee races or subspecies; e.g. A. m. carnica (Car) versus Buckfast (Bcf). The Bcf is a synthetic race found mainly in Western Europe. The Car is a natural subspecies, widespread in Southern and Central Europe [Olszewski et al. 2012; Meixner et al. 2010]. The authors performed morphometric analyses of NG tissues to investigate the effect of the age, type (summer and winter bees) and race (A. m. carnica versus Buckfast) on NG morphometric structures. MATERIAL and METHODS The experiments were performed on A. m. carnica (Car) and Buckfast (Bcf) workers sampled directly from the hives in the apiary of the Department of Biological Basis of Animal Production of the University of Life Sciences in Lublin. Summer bees were collected from May to August and winter bees were collected from October to April. Three Bcf and three Car colonies were used. In early May Bcf brood-combs were inserted for 2 days into an incubator for 1-day-old workers to emerge. Then, the yellow-colored 1-day-old Bcf workers were introduced into the colonies of dark-colored Car bees for easy recognition within the hive. From May to August, 30 Bcf bees were weekly sampled from each of the 3 Car colonies (Tab. 1). The procedure was identical for the dark Car bees whose 1-day-old workers were introduced into the colonies of yellow Bcf bees. The procedures were run simultaneously for the Car and Bcf bees. Thirty Bcf and thirty Car winter bees were sampled respectively from each of the Bcf and each of the Car colonies from October to February every other week and from March to April every week (Tab. 1). Car brood-combs were systematically replaced by Bcf broodcombs in the Car colonies, whereas Bcf brood-combs were systematically replaced by Car brood-combs in the Bcf colonies from March to April. This made it possible to collect winter bees until to the end of April

The intersegmental membranes containing NGs from each of the sampled summer and winter Bcf and Car workers were dissected and photographed under a stereoscopic microscope Stereo Zoom Microscope: Olympus SZX16 (camera: Olympus DP72). Then, preparations were made from the dissections according to the method of Ptaszyńska et al. [2012] in order to photograph them under a scanning microscope VEGA LMU Scanning Electrone Microscope. The morphometric measurements of the components of the NG structures were made using the photographs both from the stereoscopic and scanning microscopes. MultiScan Base software was applied. Morfometryczna analiza gruczołu Nasonova robotnic Apis mellifera The results were statistically analyzed with the SAS software (SAS Institute SAS/ STAT User s Guide Version 9.13, Cary, NC, Statistical Analysis System Institute) using one-way ANO- VAs. RESULTS The NGs were visible as bright strips in daylight (Fig. 1) and blue strips in UV radiation (Fig. 2). The summer and winter Bcf and Car bees did not differ from each other in terms of length and width of the intersegmental membrane, strands, cilia and canal region. Therefore, only the ranges of their dimensions were shown in Tab. 2. 12 Milena Bajda, Jacek Chobotow In the summer bees, the first two NG lumps in the intersegmental membrane appeared between the 1 st and 2 nd week, while an extended set of lumps appeared between the 3 rd and 4 th week. Each day there appeared more and more of them, but always paired up to the 5 th week of age. No differences between the Car and Bcf of summer bees were observed in the moment of lumps appearance. The Bcf and Car winter bees did not differ in NG morphology but they differed as to the moment of lump appearance during the aging process. In the winter Bcfs the first two lumps appeared in December, whereas in the winter Cars they appeared in January. DISCUSSION and CONCLUSIONS The multiplication of the lumps was most likely the result of aging and the transformation from a nest bee into a forager bee, i.e. with age polyethism [Elekonich and Roberts 2005; Gracioli-Vitti et al. 2004; Blum and Fales 1988; Winston 1987]. In the foragers, large numbers of lumps were associated with the secretion of the NG compounds with which bees mark the hive entrance and various objects in the area, as well as distinguishing hive intruders [Al- -Kahtani and Bienefeld 2011]. Similar dark lump containing iron, calcium, magnesium and phosphate have been described, but in the apian fat body [Keim et al. 2002; Nesson 1995; Kuterbach et al. 1982]. One may speculate that the lumps in NG are a compaction of melanin aggregates, proteins and metal ions which are accumulated in the cells due to various environmental influences [De Gregorio et al. 2002; Evans et al. 2006; Merzendorfer and Zimoch 2003; Suderman et al. 2006; Sugumaran 2002; Zufelato et al. 2004]. For example, foragers are exposed to pathogens, UV or pesticides in connection with their function. The lumps in the Bcfs appeared in December, while they did so in the Cars in January. Interracial differences in the appearance of the lumps in winter-bee NGs were demonstrated for the first time in this study. In March / April, compacted lumps were observed as a dark strip and remained the same until the end of life. Probably, higher spring temperatures influenced these processes in the winter bees [Münch et al. 2008]. This confirms that the changes may be a result of aging. The description of the formation of the lumps in NGs constitutes the basis for the determination of their function, as well as related histological and biochemical changes, in future studies. The present study shows that it is not only the age but also the type (subcaste) and race of the bees that should be taken into account, when interpreting bee senescence. Przeprowadzono badania ankietowe z udziałem 290 studentów medycyny weterynaryjnej, biologii i hodowli zwierząt. W badaniach ankietowych wzięło udział 175 studentów weterynarii, oraz 115 studentów biologii i hodowli zwierząt. Wykształceniem ogólnym legitymowało się 251 studentów, a tylko 39 średnim wykształceniem technicznym. Spośród studentów z wykształceniem ogólnym 184 ukończyło profilowane licea ogólnokształcące o profilu biologiczno chemicznym oraz matematyczno fizycznym. Z obszarów wiejskich pochodziło 109 osób, a 181 z terenów miejskich. Wśród badanych studentów, 224 znało dobrze programy informatyczne zawarte w pakiecie Microsoft Office, natomiast na poziome podstawowym tylko 66 studentów. Na koniec pierwszego semestru wszyscy posługiwali się programami informatycznymi (Microsoft Office) w stopniu dobrym, co umożliwi im wykorzystanie szczególnie programu Excel i wykonanie podstawowych obliczeń analitycznych z zakresu statystyki opisowej swoich badań naukowych niezbędnych do prac dyplomowych. Słowa kluczowe: programy informatyczne, studenci medycyny weterynaryjnej, hodowli zwierząt i biologii. Summary. Survey was carried out on 290 students, 175 veterinary students and 115 students of biology. It should be noted that amidst all students, 251 students gave evidence of the general secondary education and only 39 students confirmed the secondary technical education. Among the students with general secondary education, 184 completed high schools with the biology and chemistry or mathematics and physics profile. In ad

It was also found that among the surveyed students, 224 had good knowledge of computer programs included in Microsoft Office, while only 66 students knew those programs on the basic level. At the end of the first semester, all students used the computer programs (Microsoft Office) on the good level, which will allow them to use Excel in basic analytical calculations of descriptive statistics in their researches and dissertations. Wstęp Rozwój komputeryzacji spowodował szeroki dostęp do komputerów oraz różnych programów specjalistycznych bardzo przydatnych do wykonania: opisów, sprawozdań, opracowania analiz, tworzenia różnorodnych baz danych, sporządzenia prezentacji. Internet można wykorzystać do nauki, przesyłania opracowań itd. Każda praca dyplomowa i magisterska powinna zawierać, część badawczą, tabele, wykresy,analizę statystyczną część opisową oraz prezentację multimedialną jako załącznik. Znajomość i umiejętność posługiwania sie podstawowymi programami zawartymi w pakiecie Microsoft Office jest niezbędna dla każdego studenta. Każdy powinien dobrze posługiwać się programem WORD [Kowalczyk G 2010] w celu napisania sprawozdań z przeprowadzanych badań. Niezbędna jest również znajomość programu ACCESS [Mendrala 2010] do stworzenia poprawnej bazy danych oraz EXCEL [Walkenbac 2010] do dokonania niezbędnych obliczeń, porównań i wskazania zależności pomiędzy poszczególnymi badanymi czynnikami (składnikami). Nie można pominąć programu POWER POINT [Zimek 2010] bez którego znajomości nie można byłoby przedstawić w formie multimedialnej wyników swoich badań. Celem przeprowadzonych badań było: Zbadanie opinii studentów na temat znajomości programów zawartych w pakiecie Microsoft Office w momencie rozpoczęcia studiów; Określenie poziomu umiejętności posługiwania się programami pakietu Microsoft Office; Ocena umiejętności racy w poszczególnych programach pakietu Microsoft Office po pierwszym roku studiów. Znajomość pakietu microsoft office i jego wykorzystanie wśród studentów MATERIAł i METODy Badaniami ankietowymi objęto 290 studentów medycyny weterynaryjnej oraz biologii i hodowli zwierząt. Wśród ankietowanych było 175 studentów weterynarii i 115 studentów biologii i hodowli zwierząt. Wykształceniem średnim ogólnym legitymowało się 251 studentów, a średnim technicznym 39 studentów. Spośród studentów z wykształceniem ogólnym 184 ukończyło profilowane licea ogólnokształcące o profilu biologiczno chemicznym oraz matematyczno fizycznym oraz matematyczno fizycznym. Program Access z pakietu Microsoft Office znany był tylko w stopniu dostatecznym i nie cieszył się większym zainteresowaniem [Klimek i In. 2012]. Ankieta zawierała pytania na temat znajomości poszczególnych programów z pakietu Microsoft Office: Wyniesionej ze szkoły średniej (ocena własna studentów); Oceny umiejętności nabytej w trakcie studiów (w zakresie od 1 do 100): edycji tekstu (Word), wykonywania obliczeń (Excel, tworzenia baz danych (Access) oraz prezentacji multimedialnej (Power Point). Znajomość poszczególnych programów pakietu Office przez tych samych studentów w różnych okresach studiów przedstawiono za pomocą niżej wymienionych wykresów. Według studentów po raz pierwszy z programami pakietu Microsoft Office zapoznali się: w szkole podstawowej 190, w gimnazjum 67 oraz w szkole zawodowej-43. Po raz pierwszy korzystali z wymienionych programów Microsoft Office: w szkole podstawowej 15, w gimnazjum 195 oraz w szkole zawodowej 80. Badania na początku zajęć wykazały, że najmniej opanowany był program Word i na poziomie podstawowym (dostatecznym) znało go 28 29

Znajomości programów pakietu Microsoft Office po ukończeniu szkoły średniej wg własnej oceny studentów. aż 201 osób, natomiast na poziomie średnim (dobrym) najbardziej był znany program Power Point i znało go 127 osób, jeśli chodzi o poziom zaawansowany (bardzo dobry) to najlepiej znany był Excel 56 osób. Wraz z przechodzeniem na kolejne semestry znajomość poszczególnych programów radykalnie się zmieniała, malała ilość osób ze znajomością (podstawową) dostateczną programów (około 50%), a rosła średnia (dobra) i zaawansowana (bardzo dobra) znajomość poszczególnych programów. Wyniki i dyskusja Po szóstym semestrze bardo duży wzrost poziomu zaawansowanego i średniego, poziom podstawowy utrzymuje się na jednakowym poziomie w poszczególnych programach ale maleje zainteresowanie programem Access. Odnotowano bardzo wyraźny wzrost znajomości poszczególnych programów po ukończeniu szóstego semestru, np. program Word na poziomie zaawansowanym (bardzo dobrym) znało już 151osób, na poziomie średnim (dobrym) 103 osoby i tylko 36 osób na poziomie podstawowym (dostatecznym). Podobnie przedstawiała się znajomość programu Power Point. Nieco słabiej wypadła znajomość programu Excel, bo poziom zaawansowany (bardzo dobry) reprezentowało 101,osón poziom średni (dobry) 116, i podstawowy (dostateczny) 32 osoby. Zastanawiający jest spadek zainteresowania i znajomości programu Access i tak po pierwszym badaniu program ten znało na poziomie podstawowym (dostatecznym) 72 osoby, na poziomie średnim (dobrym) 172 osoby i poziom zaawansowany (bardzo dobrym)46 osób. Natomiast po szóstym semestrze ten program na poziomie podstawowym (dostatecznym) znało 6, na poziomie średnim(dobrym) 15 i na poziomie zaawansowanym (bardzo dobrym) 20 osób. Ogólnie na początku studiów deklarowało znajomość programu Access 290 osób, a po pierwszym stopniu znajomość tego programu zadeklarowało tylko 41 osób. W okresie od października 2008 r. do lutego 2009 r. na terenie Zakładu Rybackiego w Potaszni wchodzącego w skład PZB Stawy Milickie zbierano odchody wydry Lutra lutra, wzdłuż stałych tras przemarszu, o łącznej długości 4,3 km. Zebrano 202 próbki kału, które poddano analizie. Poszczególne ofiary były identyfikowane na podstawie budowy charakterystycznych części szkieletu. Ryby występowały we wszystkich odchodach wydry, natomiast ryby karpiowate Cyprinidae w 94,5% odchodów. Łącznie stwierdzono 708 ofiar, wśród których ryby stanowiły 91,8%. Gatunki hodowlane tj. karp Cyprinus carpio oraz lin Tinca tinca występowały odpowiednio w 32,7% odchodów oraz 12,4%. Ich udział procentowy w ilości ofiar wynosił 16,1 % (karp) oraz 13,5% (lin). Wielkość skonsumowanych karpi wahała się od 6,3 cm do 13,8 cm (=10,7±1,22 SD), a wielkość skonsumowanych linów wynosiła od 3,1 cm do 7,4 cm (= 4,7± 0,74 SD). Oprócz gatunków ryb o znaczeniu gospodarczym ofiarami wydr padały również ryby określane przez hodowców tzw. chwastem rybnym. The common carp (Cyprinus carpio) feeding with grain is a most effective yield raising method in Hungarian pond farms though due to the limits of natural production the quantity of the final yield is also limited. In the experiment I examined growth and production of different carp age- -groups reared in small pond environment on full-value food in different stocking structures. A main aim of the research was to develop a new production-feeding technology which would reduce the present 3-year rearing system of carp into a 2-year one. Space for the new technology would be ensured by unexploited wintering and storage ponds being empty during the summer months which are available in most fish farms. To obtain the described aims different age-groups were stocked in different structures into experimental ponds. Beside a continuous monitoring of water quality, the growth of body weight, utilization of food, quality of meat and state of fish health was examined. Modern feeding technology is needed to producers for the production of the appropriate amount and quality of fish meat. In Hungarian pond cultures the complementary feeding with cereal grains is the most efficient performance enhancer, however the amount of final performance is limited because of the confinement of natural performance. Recently, with the availability of the good quality and complete feeding stuff the intensive carp-centered production became more apparent. Already in the 1960 s and 70 s the intensive breeding of carp started in GDR. They considered that the industrial breeding can only be dealt above 20 C water temperature. The optimum temperature was determined between C. Feeding stuff was offered with about 40 % crude protein where the rate of fish meal is 50 %. The feeding of carbohydrates was not successful in intensive systems, the fish feed contains % carbohydrate that caused fat infiltration and bad feed conversion. (TASNÁDI, 1983). Already in the 1970 s and 80 s, intensive fish breeding was tried out in Hungary but there were no optional conditions. From 1995, the HAL-INNO_FISH Ltd. worked out and applies the cage rearing of more domestic fish species, including the rearing of one-, two and three year carps as well, nowadays. (KOZÁK, 2009). Beside the cage rearing, there are other tries for the domestic intensive carp breeding. There are the so-called pond in pond and pond water recirculating systems where the intensive and extensive carp rearing are combined. (STÜNDL et. al., 2010). The main aim of the research was to decrease the 3-year carp breeding to 2 years by adding complete mixed feeding stuff. For this activity, one-year carps of 200 g are needed to rear in the first year that can reach the market size in the next year. By this method, we could reach multiple yield of net yield per hectare against traditional technology. For the new technology the place is insured by the empty wintering and containing ponds in summer that are owned by the most fish cultures. During the research the growth index and production index of one and two-year carps with different stocking density were examined. Beside the continuous monitoring of water quality, the body weight gain, the feed conversion, the fish meat quality and the health status of fishes were examined. In the current article, I will explain the technology of oneyear rearing which is the crucial point of the technology. MATERIALS and METHODS The growing year may be characterized by the followings: the weather conditions were relatively favourable, the water temperature was not decreased below 20 0 C and not increased over 28 C (this is the optimum temperature of adding mixed feeding stuff). There were two, 1 week long colder periods. In these periods the feeding was limited and the daily increasing of feeding stuff portions was attached to the increasing temperature of water. The pre-reared carps were introduced on June 11 to the wintering ponds in different stocking density (Table 1). The ponds were dry and disinfected by kg chlorinated lime before filling. The wintering ponds had no water flowing system, continuous water change has not taken place; only the evaporating water was replaced. The oxygen supplementation was insured by electric blade aeration system. The three wintering ponds where the research was taken place were all about the same size and volume with an average water depth of 1,5 m.
