August 18, 2013 20th Ordinary Sunday Page Four T he foundations of truth and courage must be laid in the early years. We can do this through example and through direct teaching. DIRECTIONS In the early years, the foundations of the virtues of truth and courage must be laid. The approach is twofold: 1. Through example. Stories of truthful, honest children set up models whom admiring youngsters will certainly follow. The lives of saints serve this purpose. St. Agnes answers the truth at the cost of life. All the martyrs teach the same lesson and show extraordinary courage. 2. Through direct teaching. When the occasion arises, perhaps at four-and-a-half or five years, the parent should explain directly that children of God tell the truth. As a matter of fact little ones brought up in a loving atmosphere, where the spirit of the Lord Jesus is ever present, are not likely to be untruthful. Cause of Untruthfulness If a baby is punished for breaking a cup or knocking over something precious, the foundation for fear and lying has been laid. Never punish a child for an accident. He did not intend to drop the cup or knock over the lamp. If you blame him for what he did not mean to do, you lead him to try to deceive you. Next time you find a broken cup, you will say, "Did baby break the cup?" and he will say, "No." Blame yourself and start on the difficult task of undoing the wrong you have done. You must say very clearly, "Mother knows you did not mean to do it." Kiss him and say, "We can easily get another cup." Make-Up Stories Many imaginative children make up stories of great doings which they talk about as if they were true. Do not imply that such things are lies. On that score, most of our literature is lies. The baby is "making up" a story. Call it "make believe" and let the distinction be clear between make-believe stories and real life. News from Other Parents One mother reports a story of a little girl, one of a large family, who was inclined to go by herself to play, one in a while. She had two imaginary playmates, Christopher and Neddie, with whom she played games and carried on long conversations. Her talk about her make-believe companions was harmless as long as she played with her brothers and sisters and did not become a little solitary. www.catholicculture.org

It was a great pleasure to serve you for last four years at St. Ferdinand. God granted me with the gift of serving you and I am very grateful to Him for that. Once more I would like to express my gratitude to Fr. Jason Torba and all Parishioners of St. Ferdinand Church for your generosity, friendly smile and prayers. These last four years have been a blessing to me. I gained a lot of experience serving you. I will always remember your goodness and I will always keep you in my prayers. Thank you for everything. Z prostotą i miłością, z wiarą i ufnością przychodzić będę do Ciebie, Jezu. Dzielić się będę z Tobą wszystkim, jak dziecię z kochającą matką radościami i cierpieniem, jednym słowem wszystkim. (Dz. 1692) Po przyjęciu Komunii Świętej następuje uczta duchowa. Pan Jezus mówi do S. Faustyny Najwięcej Ci powiem, kiedy rozmawiasz ze Mną w głębi serca swego; tu nikt przeszkodzić nie może działaniu Mojemu, tu odpoczywam jako w ogrodzie zamkniętym. (Dz. 581) Oprzyj głowę swoją o ramię Moje i odpocznij i zaczerpnij siły. Ja jestem zawsze z tobą. (Dz. 498) Faustyna mówi: Jednego mam tylko powiernika, przed którym się zwierzam ze wszystkiego, a nim jest Jezus Eucharystia... (Dz.504) Faustyna stwierdza, że im większa zażyłość łączyła ją z Boskim Oblubieńcem, tym bardziej zdawała sobie sprawę z Jego niepojętej świętości, majestatu i chwały i trwała duchowo na kolanach. Wszechmocnemu Gościowi powierzała też dusze potrzebujące Jego miłosierdzia, a miała ich całą moc. Hojność Boga jest zawsze większa, niż człowiek może pojąć: Pragnę się udzielać duszom i napełniać je swoją miłością, ale mało jest dusz, które by chciały przyjąć wszystkie łaski, które im miłość moja przeznaczyła. (Dz. 1017) Ze strony człowieka oczekuje prostoty i pokornego obcowania z Nim: Córko moja, mów Mi o wszystkim tak prosto i po ludzku, sprawiasz mi tym wielką radość: Ja cię rozumię, bo jestem Bogiem Człowiekiem. Ta prosta mowa serca twojego milszą mi jest aniżeli hymny pochwalne układane na cześć moją. (Dz. 797) Potrzeba też wiary, że w Hostii człowiek przyjmuje żywego Boga: Pod wszystkimi postaciami jestem ten sam, ale nie wszystkie dusze przyjmują mnie z taką żywą wiarą jak ty, córko moja i dlatego nie mogę tak działać w duszach ich jak w duszy twojej. (Dz. 1407) Po Komunii Świętej jest czas, aby powierzyć Jezusowi wszystko, co leży nam na sercu, co wymaga rozeznania i decyzji, co niepokoi sumienie: Powiedz duszom, aby nie stawiały tamy mojemu miłosierdziu we własnym sercu, które tak bardzo pragnie w nich działać. Pracuje moje miłosierdzie we wszystkich sercach, które mi otwierają swoje drzwi; jak grzesznik, tak i sprawiedliwy potrzebują mojego miłosierdzia... Im dusza więcej zaufa, tym więcej otrzyma. Wielką mi są pociechą dusze o bezgranicznej ufności, bo w takie dusze przelewam wszystkie skarby swych łask. Cieszę się, że żądają wiele, bo moim pragnieniem jest dawać wiele. Smucę się natomiast, jeżeli dusze żądają mało, zacieśniają swe serce. August 18, 2013 20th Ordinary Sunday Page ON CHURRASCO IN SANTO DOMINGO, AND THE BREAD OF LIFE Copyright 2013 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) After my first trip--a business assignment--to the Dominican Republic several years ago, I wrote in this space that its capital, Santo Domingo, is the land of beautiful women and crazy drivers. Having recently returned from another assignment there, I can report that nothing s changed. I d love to take my wife someday. She d fit right in, after all. And I m talking the beautiful women part, not the crazy drivers part. But this trip will be memorable for a reason that has nothing to do with gorgeous faces and warm smiles or with a general disregard for traffic signals. Instead, it has everything to do with lunch. I was on the agenda for two presentations--late morning and late afternoon--on Wednesday of last week. After the first session, which ran long, our hosts Yvonne and her assistant Aida (my interpreter) offered to take my business colleague Scott and me out for lunch. We readily said yes and ended up at a place called Pepperoni s, which, despite its name, is not Italian. Yvonne told us that it was a popular spot recognized by the locals for its atmosphere and excellent food. Scott and I both ordered the same thing--churrasco-- which Aida explained is skirt steak. And a good choice. It was delicious. I m not sure why I enjoyed the meal so much. It could have been the company. It could have been that I was ravenous (I hadn t eaten since dinner the night before). It could have been the little bowl of olive oil and spices for dipping the steak into that accompanied the platter. Mostly I think it was a good piece of meat grilled to perfection. Tender. Juicy. Lightly salted. I ate it with enthusiasm and wondered once or twice if vegetarians really know what they are missing. At one point I just put my fork down and said to whoever cared to listen, This is really good! In truth, I ve already locked the meal in my mind as the best lunch I ve ever had. With all of this fresh in my mind, I find that today s Gospel-- the conclusion of Christ s Bread of Life Discourse--couldn t be more appropriate. I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Jesus says. Whoever eats this bread will live forever, and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world. I heard a priest on the radio say once that his biggest fear was complacency. Specifically, he feared taking for granted on occasion the miracle that he proclaims at the Consecration of Mass each day after month after year after decade. For the faithful in the pews, our biggest fear should be the corollary of this. As Catholics, we know that Eucharist is an extraordinary gift--our greatest--and certainly, then, we must never take it for granted either. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink, Jesus says. Do I understand this? Of course not. Do I believe it? Like Thomas in the upper room, Lord, I believe; help my unbelief. I will long remember the churrasco feast in Santo Domingo with Yvonne, Aida, and Scott. May I never forget to savor the truefood-and-true-drink feast that is Jesus the Christ.
