Geologia Sudetica, 2009, 41: 85 100. Józef Oberc IN MEMORY July 28, 1918 No vem ber 22, 2008 The sci en tist must be ready to ac cept that oth ers will live in a house that he has been con struct ing. These words by Ludwik Hirschfeld ac cu rately ap ply to Pro fes - sor Józef Oberc, who spent his en tire ac a demic life con - struct ing the house of geo log i cal knowl edge for the ben e fit of stu dents, sci ence in gen eral and, in deed, for hu man prog ress. Pro fes sor Oberc passed away on the 22nd No - vember, 2008. Some 90 years pre vi ously, Józef Oberc had been born on the 28th of July, 1918, in Jas³o but shortly there af ter moved to Kamionka Strumi³owa where he at tended pri - mary school be tween 1924 and 1928. He con tin ued his ed - u ca tion at Kamionka Strumi³owa by at tend ing the Kornel Ujejski State Gym na sium up to the 4 th course. In 1932, af - ter his fa ther died, his fam ily moved back to Jas³o where he com pleted his school ing at the King Stanis³aw Leszczyñski Gym na sium in 1937. Fol low ing school, Józef Oberc stud ied ge ol ogy at Jan Kazimierz Uni ver sity in Lvov be tween 1937 and 1941, grad u at ing by pass ing the state fi nal exam in June 1941. He then em barked on an MSc the sis at the Jagiellonian Uni ver sity in Kraków, un - der the su per vi sion of Pro fes sor Wojciech Rogala. The re - sultant thesis Podole within the geo log i cal con text of the Russian Plate was based on avail able lit er a ture in the li - brary of the Ge ol ogy De part ment of Lvov Uni ver sity, and Józef Oberc was awarded his MSc in July 1945. Dur ing the sec ond half of 1942, Józef Oberc was em - ployed in the geo log i cal branch of the pe tro leum trust Karpathen Ol AG Lemberg. Work ing in the oil fields near Gorlice he col lected ma te ri als for his PhD the sis. Af ter World War II, be tween No vem ber 1945 and June 1946, he worked as a se nior as sis tant in the De part - ment of Ge ol ogy and Palae on tol ogy at Poznañ Uni ver - sity. In 1946, Józef Oberc ob tained a se nior as sis tant po si - tion at the Uni ver sity of Wroc³aw, which was then headed by Pro fes sor Henryk Teisseyre. Józef Oberc be came only the sec ond per son af ter the war to de fend a PhD at the Fac ulty of Nat u ral Sci ences of the Uni ver sity of Wroc³aw: on 10 th May, 1947, he sucessfully de fended his PhD, pub - lish ing the es sen tial find ings later as Fa³d gorlicki i brzeg p³aszczowiny magurskiej na wschód od Gorlic [The Gorlice Fold and the Edge of the Magura Nappe East of Gorlice] (Biuletyn Instytutu Geologicznego, 1950: 7; 1 55). There af - ter, he re mained in Wroc³aw and taught at the Uni ver sity of Wroc³aw for the rest of his very long life. The pe riod 1946 1950 was, for Józef Oberc, a time of con cen trated study on the Sudetes, a re gion geo log i cally very dif fer ent from that of the Carpathians where he had grown up. As this was just af ter the war, Józef found him - self immersed in intense organizational work, rescuing rock and mineral collections and organizing library and map col lec tions so that these could form the ba sis for mod ern teach ing and re search. Over a pe riod of fifty years, Józef Oberc pro gressed through all the ranks of a Uni ver sity pro fes sional ca reer. He started as a se nior as sis tant in 1946, fol lowed by an ad - junct po si tion in 1948 1952, then be came an in de pend ent re searcher in 1953 1954, an as sis tant pro fes sor in 1954 1955, a do cent in 1955, an ex traor di nary pro fes sor in 1963, and, fi nally, a full pro fes sor in 1975. From 1947 on, he was a per ma nent mem ber both of the Coun cil of the Fac ulty of Nat u ral Sci ences and of the Sci en tific Coun cil of the In - sti tute of Geo log i cal Sci ences at the Uni ver sity of Wroc³aw. Be tween 1954 and 55 he was a Vice-Dean of the Fac - ulty of Nat u ral Sci ences. And in 1961 he founded the De - partment of Physical Geology at the University of Wroc³aw and was its head un til 1990. Józef Oberc was a great and pro lific sci en tist. He authored 260 sci en tific pub li ca tions and sev eral geo log i cal maps. Most of his re search was de voted to the ge ol ogy of SW Poland, in particular to tectonics, ore-deposits and tec - tonic ter mi nol ogy (see also the ar ti cle Józef Oberc: a Unique Scholar in this vol ume). The first pe riod of his sci en tific work took place dur ing 1947 1956, when his re - search in ter ests, as well as those of most ge ol o gists from Wroc³aw at that time, fo cussed on the geo log i cal prob lems of sed i men tary rocks: these acted as a sort of con tin u a tion of the Carpathian stud ies. Dur ing the long pe riod of 1954 1972, Józef Oberc per formed both re con nais sance and sys tem atic stud ies on most of the meta mor phic units of the Sudetes. This pe riod of his ca reer saw him au thor many new pub li ca tions and mono graphs. Some of the most im por tant pub li ca tions were ones in which there was a syn the sis of the re gional ge ol ogy. Pro fes sor Oberc s ex pert knowl edge of the ge ol ogy of Lower Silesia and its ad join ing ar eas, his wide in ter ests and a comprehensive
86 IN MEM ORY abil ity to un der stand all as pects of ge ol ogy meant that he was in a unique po si tion to ad dress many of the most im - por tant geo log i cal prob lems of Lower Silesia. The pub li ca - tions of the late 1950s and the 1960s ul ti mately led to his landmark work, Budowa geologiczna Polski, t. IV. Sudety i obszary przyleg³e [Ge ol ogy of Po land, pt. IV. The Sudetes and Neigh bour ing Ar eas] (Wydawnictwa Geologiczne, Warszawa, 1972; 307 pp). That mon u men tal book by Pro fes - sor Oberc was, un til re cently, the most sys tem atic syn the - sis of the re gional ge ol ogy of SW Po land and was a work that in spired many stud ies and searches for new and im - proved geo log i cal mod els of the re gion. Other sig nif i cant sci en tific achieve ments be tween the late 60s and early 70 s was Pro fes sor Oberc s con tri bu - tion to the Pol ish tec tonic dic tio nary, his pub li ca tion of geo log i cal maps of sev eral re gions of the Sudetes, and his geo log i cal and tec tonic maps of Po land. He also de vel oped skills in ore de posit man age ment and of ten acted as a con - sul tant in that field. In ad di tion to what might be termed stan dard ge ol - ogy, Pro fes sor Józef Oberc was also open to non-con ven - tional sci en tific the o ries. In the mid 1970s, within the Global Tec tonic Pro cesses pro ject, he en cour aged one of his youn ger de part men tal col leagues to in ves ti gate the ex - pand ing Earth the ory. Un der his pa tron age, the in ter na - tional con fer ence Prob lems of the Ex pand ing Earth was or - ga nized in Wroc³aw in 1994, which in cluded the most prominent promoter of that theory, Professor Warren Carrey (Aus tra lia), as an in vited lec turer. Pro fes sor Józef Oberc was an out stand ing teacher for many generations of geology, geography and biology stu - dents. From the very start of his em ploy ment at the Uni - ver sity of Wroc³aw he gave lec tures on phys i cal ge ol ogy. He was an ex cel lent lec turer and a de mand ing ex am iner, char ac ter is tics that will be re mem bered by thou sands of his stu dents. A spe cial char ac ter is tic of his lec tures was that he fre quently gave mul ti ple so lu tions to geotectonic prob lems. This flex i bil ity of ap proach de rived from a deep knowl edge of ge ol ogy and cre ated a sim i lar de gree of deep think ing among his stu dents. A further substantial pedagogical contribution by Pro fes sor Józef Oberc was the pub li ca tion in 1951 of an academic handbook of physical/general geology [Przewodnik do æwiczeñ z geologii dynamicznej]. Re-ed ited sev eral times, this hand book was in ten sively used by ge ol ogy and ge og ra phy stu dents for sev eral de cades. For more than 30 years, Józef Oberc guided geo log i cal field courses dur ing which he taught stu dents the dif fi cult skill of field work. And un der his su per vi sion, 89 stu dents com pleted MSc the ses, 12 sci en tists de fended PhD the ses, and two re ceived ha bil i ta tion de grees. Pro fes sor Józef Oberc was a sci en tist who de clared his independent political and world outlook during the hard times when Po land was gov erned by the com mu nists. He sup ported the in de pend ent trade un ion move ment of Sol - i dar ity ; among his youn ger col leagues were sev eral Sol i - dar ity ac tiv ists. He was also a reg u lar par tic i pant in Christ - mas Eve ge ol ogy meet ings that started dur ing the mar tial law pe riod of the early 1980s and that con tin ued for many years af ter. Those for tu nate enough to get close to Pro fes sor Oberc be yond the of fi cial meet ings for his leg end ary phys i cal ge ol ogy ex ams soon dis cov ered that the Pro fes sor loved trav el ling the world. With great en thu si asm, and ac com pa - nied by a group of his friends, he made jour neys across the Hi ma la yas and across In dia, South Amer ica and Af rica. The most un usual trip was a stu dent ex pe di tion to Ice land in 1981 that was or ga nized and su per vised by the Pro fes sor. This unforgettable adventure created strong bonds of friend ship be tween Józef Oberc and the other par tic i pants. The sci en tific com mu nity in Wroc³aw knew Pro fes - sor Oberc through his long stand ing mem ber ship (from 1962 on) of the Wroc³aw Sci en tific So ci ety. The wider Pol - ish geo log i cal com mu nity knew him through his mem ber - ship of the Sci en tific Coun cil of the Pol ish Geo log i cal In - sti tute and, at var i ous times, as a mem ber of many other sci en tific coun cils: he was pres i dent of the Tec tonic Group of the Com mit tee on Geo log i cal Sci ences of the Pol ish Acad emy of Sci ences (PAS); pres i dent of the Geo log i cal Re search Group of the Earth Sci ences Com mis sion of PAS; a mem ber of the Pol ish Geo log i cal So ci ety (PGS) (and a hon or ary mem ber from 1985 to his pass ing); and pres i dent of the Wroc³aw Branch of PGS for many terms, as well as the or ga nizer of sev eral gen eral meet ings of PGS and other sci en tific con fer ences. Fur ther more, he was a founder and hon or ary mem ber of the So ci ety of Ge ol o - gists-grad u ates of the Uni ver sity of Wroc³aw. For his ped a gog i cal achieve ments, Pro fes sor Józef Oberc re ceived the Medal of Na tional Ed u ca tion Com - mis sion and the Medal of Mer i to ri ous Teacher. For his sci - en tific achieve ments and for his work in the Lower Silesia re gion, he was dec o rated with the Or der of Polonia Restituta, Cav a lier Cross (1973) and the Medal of Mer i to - ri ous ness for the Wroc³aw Voivodship. Wroc³aw Uni ver - sity granted him its most pres ti gious prize the Gold Medal of the Uni ver sity of Wroc³aw and, in 2006, Pro - fes sor Oberc re ceived the Hon or ary In sig nia of Mer i to ri - ous for Pol ish Ge ol ogy. Pro fes sor Oberc was on sev eral oc ca sions hon oured by his peers and col leagues. To jointly cel e brate his 70 th birth day and for 40 years of sci en tific re search, the geo log - i cal com mu nity ded i cated a spe cial festshrift of sci en tific pa pers in his hon our (Acta Universitatis Wratislaviensis No 1113, Prace Geologiczno Mineralogiczne XVII, Wroc³aw, 1989). An other cele bra tory vol ume was pre pared on the 30 th an ni ver sary of his found ing of the De part ment of Physical Geology (Acta Universitatis Wratislaviensis No 1375, Prace Geologiczno Mineralogiczne XXIX, Wroc³aw, 1991). And in 1997 a spe cial cel e bra tion was or ga - nized at the Uni ver sity of Wroc³aw: the re newal of Pro fes - sor Józef Oberc s doc tor ate (i.e., the 50 th anniversary of his PhD de fence). The last 60 years of ge ol ogy in Wroc³aw and in Po land will for ever be con nected with Pro fes sor Józef Oberc. Gen er a tions of se nior re search ers and of young stu dents alike all feel a deep grat i tude to Józef Oberc for shar ing with them his phenomenal knowledge, dedication to creative work, and sci en tific hon esty. Stryjewski) Pro fes sor Józef Oberc passed away on 22 No vem ber, 2008, aged 90. Yet, even in his early to mid 80s he was, re - mark ably, still in volved in re search and teach ing. Only in his late 80s did he fi nally start to take life a bit eas ier. Now, on his pass ing, we, his col leagues, would here like to take the op por tu nity to of fer an over view of the ex traor di nary ac a demic ca reer of one of Po land s most out stand ing ge ol - o gists. Józef Oberc s geo log i cal train ing started at the Lwów and Kraków schools of Carpathian ge ol ogy. His PhD the - sis was on an im por tant struc tural and eco nomic as pect of that ge ol ogy: the oil-bear ing Gorlice Fold, on which his the sis of fered valu able new in ter pre ta tions. How ever, his pro fes sional ca reer af ter World War II was de voted mainly to the ge ol ogy of Lower Silesia, a re gion that was lit tle known to Pol ish ge ol o gists at that time and a per fect area for the young Oberc to make his re search mark. In deed, it was where he cre ated his own school of re gional stud ies. In over 260 scientific publications, Professor Oberc ad - dressed a pleth ora of geo logic prob lems of the Sudetes and the Fore-Sudetic Block, including stratigraphy, geotectonics and ore ge ol ogy. In the Sudetes, Pro fes sor Oberc ques tioned the view, then prevalent among German geologists, that Lower Silesia was a re gion unique in Eu rope and that it was com - posed of a mosiac of small crustal el e ments of var i ous ages and der i va tions. Józef Oberc was first to ar gue that this mo saic was re ally a set of Pre cam brian struc tures that had been severly over printed by Palaeozoic ones. The de - vel op ment of this idea al lowed him to cre ate a tec tonic model of the Sudetes whereby he could cor re late Sudetic struc tures with struc tures in other parts of the Bo he mian Mas sif. From this, the Sudetes could be con sid ered as part of a much larger frag ment of the global-scale Baikalides/ Cadomides/Brasilides orogenic belt that it self was later re - con structed and in cor po rated into the orogenic belt of the Variscides of West ern and Cen tral Eu rope. This model, af - ter fur ther re fine ments by Pro fes sor Oberc and his col - leagues, was to be come the ba sis for nu mer ous in ter pre ta - tions of the struc ture and geo log i cal evo lu tion of the Sudetes and its neigh bour ing ar eas. Dur ing the late 1950s, Pro fes sor Oberc started his re - search on the Sudetes by in ves ti gat ing the Bardo struc tural unit, a suc ces sion of unmetamorphosed, but struc tur ally deformed, Ordovician through Carboniferous sedimen - tary rocks. In this se quence, he iden ti fied more than 50 disharmonic fold struc tures and real ised that these folds re sulted from the un der ly ing base ment strongly con trol - ling the na ture of the de for ma tion in the over ly ing sed i - men tary se quences. Un til rel a tively re cently, three of his key pub li ca tions from this time the mono graph Re gion Gór Bardzkich (The Bardo Moun tains Re gion; 1957); the 1:50 000 map of this re gion (at tached to that mono graph); and the sub se quent 1:25 000 map (Detailed Geological Map of Po land, Bardo Sheet) pro vided the ba sis for all geo log i - cal work in that area and a re li able foun da tion for the de - vel op ment of new con cepts of Palaeozoic evo lu tion of the Bardo ba sin. Pro fes sor Oberc s Bardo re search pres aged his au thor ship of many other geo log i cal maps dur ing his ca reer and started his very in flu en tial de vel op ment of Pol - ish tectonic terminology. Dur ing the 1960s, Józef Oberc s at ten tion was drawn to the Karkonosze Izera Block. His syn the sis of his own stud ies (East ern Karkonosze and their po si tion in the Sudeten Struc ture, 1960; An out line of the ge ol ogy of the Karkonosze- Izera Block. Stud ies on the ge ol ogy of the Sudetic Moun tains, 1961) not only placed this block into its re gional con text but also re sulted in the block be ing tec toni cally sub di vided in a way that is still ac cepted to day. Fur ther more, his in - ter pre ta tions of the small-scale tec tonic struc tures clar i fied the struc tural re la tion ships be tween these smaller units (Dis per sion of B-lineation in the Izera Mts Crys tal line Mas sif, 1967). His model of mul ti ple fold ing, cited in many ac a - demic text books, be came the stan dard to fol low when tec - toni cally in ter pret ing other crys tal line units of the Sudetes, par tic u larly the area at the junc tion be tween the Czech Re pub lic, Ger many and Po land. Ex pand ing his stud ies fur ther to in clude the Fore- Sudetic Block, Pro fes sor Oberc pub lished his mono graph Ge ol ogy of crys tal line rocks of the Wzgórza Strzeliñskie Hills, Lower Silesia in 1966 in which he of fered a sys tem atic over view of the evo lu tion of the east ern part of this block, one based on older Ger man lit er a ture and on his own fresh ob ser va tions. Here, he de vel oped a nappe model to ex plain the re gional ge ol ogy of the Fore-Sudetic Block and he of fered cor re la tions with the East Sudetes. And once more, Pro fes sor Oberc s geo log i cal in sight at the time pro-

Oberc) Prof. Józef Oberc cel e brat ing the 50 th an ni ver sary of his PhD de - fence, Aula Leopoldina, 1997 (Photo by A. Stryjewski) ved to be cor rect: this nappe model has been sup ported by later struc tural, pet ro log i cal and geo chem i cal stud ies. Not only that, but his early as sump tion of a Pro tero zoic age for the gneiss es in the area was re cently con firmed in a number of publications, and his interpretation of the bound ary be tween the large lithospheric blocks of the West and East Sudetes (The bound ary be tween the West ern and East ern Sudetic struc ture, 1968) and its ex act lo ca tion, more east erly than was as sumed at the time, is also still cor rect. Following the discovery of copper deposits in the Fore-Sudetic Monocline and some in tense geo log i cal ex - plo ra tion of that area, Pro fes sor Oberc also took a keen in - ter est in the ge ol ogy of the monocline and its base ment, and he made important contributions to understanding the gen e sis of the as so ci ated cop per de pos its. A further important element of Professor Józef Oberc s in ves ti ga tions were the granitoid mas sifs of Lower Silesia, notably their tectonic structures and the relationships to their meta mor phic en ve lopes. His stud ies were built on the clas sic works by Hans Cloos, and in his pa per The tec - tonic po si tion of the Karkonosze Gran ite (1965) he ar gued that this Sudetes gran ite is a flat-ly ing plutonic body con - cealed be low the Izera gneiss es. As a re sult of all his 1950s and 1960s pub li ca tions on the ge ol ogy, and es pe cially the tec ton ics, of the Sudetes, Pro fes sor Oberc sig nif i cantly raised the stan dard of how to pres ent field work data via de tailed maps and geo log i cal di a grams. These same map ping and pre sen ta tion skills were also drilled into gen er a tions of his stu dents, who ben - e fit ted greatly. The first 25 years of Józef Oberc s Lower Silesian studies were summarized in the monumental monograph Budowa geologiczna Polski, t. IV. Sudety i obszary przyleg³e [Ge ol ogy of Po land, pt. IV, The Sudetes and Neigh bour ing Ar eas] (Wydawnictwa Geologiczne, Warszawa, 1972, 307 pp). The mono graph con tains, among its many themes, the re sults of Pro fes sor Oberc s work on the age re la tion - ships between the metamorphic complexes, defining mag - matic cy cles, the dis tri bu tion and se quence of fold struc - tures, and the de vel op ment of fault net works. The pre sen - ta tion of his new data on the re la tion ships be tween Lower Silesia and the main orogenic sys tems in Eu rope was pre - ceded by a crit i cal his tor i cal over view of the ear lier con - cepts. Be fore this mono graph was pub lished, no one per - son had un der taken, or per haps could have un der taken, such a huge chal lenge in geo log i cal syn the sis, one that re - quired a de tailed knowl edge of the ge ol ogy of all the Sudetic units based on years of sys tem atic field work. This mono graph re mains a unique work on the ge ol ogy of the Sudetes. The long pe riod of re search be tween 1970 and 1990 saw Professor Oberc publish further tectonic syntheses of the Lower Silesia re gion, this time against the wider back - ground of Cen tral Eu rope. He was, dur ing this pe riod, the first per son to in tro duce into the Sudetic geo log i cal lit er a - ture palinspastic re con struc tions of de formed rock com - plexes of the Variscan belt. Such re con struc tions re store the orig i nal ge om e try of a rock se quence be fore it had been de formed by thrusts and folds, but do it in a se quen - tial way so the viewer can see the ac tual se quence of de - formation events. Yet an other sub ject tack led by Pro fes sor Oberc were the Sudetic faults them selves. The pa per Main Sudetic di ag - onal dislocation and its significance for the position of the Variscan Lara mide Synclinorium (1964) pro poses a very in tel lec tu ally at trac tive the sis of scis sor-type dis lo ca tion, previously interpreted as a set of independent faults, which controlled the location of sedimentary basins dur - ing the late Palaeozoic and Me so zoic. He was the first to rec og nize the role of dis place ments along re gional strikeslip faults and to re late the slip de for ma tion with con tem - po ra ne ous fold ing within one of the walls of the fault (Early to Mid dle Variscan de vel op ment of the West Sudetes, 1980). Pro fes sor Oberc hy poth es ised that the whole evo lu - tion of the Variscides was due to strike-slip move ments be - tween in di vid ual lithospheric blocks, sep a rated by fault sys tems. This pow er ful idea en abled him to ex plain the geological evolution of Central Europe without the need for subduction (A role of litho sphere blocks and shift ing move ments in the premolasse de vel op ment of the Variscides on the Bo he mian Mas sif mar gins,1987). The con cept of
IN MEM ORY 89 strike-slip deformation as, perhaps, the dominant tectonic mech a nism was also de vel oped by sev eral other au thors and col leagues, and in the 1990s was the sub ject of sev eral Polish and international research projects. Pro fes sor Józef Oberc had the un usual abil ity to see ge ol ogy as a whole. This is dem on strated by his abil ity to use any of the geo log i cal subdisciplines for de tailed re - search and yet also have the abil ity to pres ent grand geo - log i cal syn the ses. This tal ent also con trib uted to the suc - cess and the in cred i ble qual ity of his lec tures on gen eral ge - ol ogy (known as dy namic ge ol ogy in Po land), be tween 1952 and 1996. His own ex cel lent field skills he passed on for over thirty years as he or ga nized field courses and taught his stu dents how to over come the dif fi cul ties that they would face as field ge ol o gists. It is a won der ful tes ta - ment to Pro fes sor Oberc that many of his for mer stu dents now oc cupy se nior po si tions in a va ri ety of ac a demic and scientific institutions, as well as in many geological compa - nies. Through his scientific, pedagogical, and professional du ties, Pro fes sor Oberc quickly be came, and re mained, a ma jor in flu ence in Pol ish ge ol ogy for much of the sec ond half of the 20 th cen tury. He will be re mem bered as a truly gifted ge ol o gist and teacher and as a great friend who will never be for got ten by those of us lucky enough to have known him. 90 IN MEM ORY Józef Oberc: the Per son Prof. Józef Oberc at the Ice land Group meet ing, Poznañ, 2001. (Photo by A. Stryjewski) Pro fes sor Józef Oberc lived a long, and very pro duc - tive, life. He worked hard as a sci en tist, and he put a con - sid er able amount of en ergy into his teach ing of nearly 50 generations of geology students at the University of Wroc³aw. For many years af ter his re tire ment he would come to the in sti tute ev ery day, but, as the years passed, this hap pened less fre quently un til he could only visit spo - rad i cally. When we (his long stand ing friends and stu dents) vis ited him at his home, he would al ways start the con ver - sa tion with the same ques tion: What is new in the in sti - tute?. And this ques tion re ferred not only to sci en tific is - sues but also to ev ery-day, per sonal mat ters. Pro fes sor Oberc was al ways sur rounded by peo ple, and his pro fes sional con tacts of ten de vel oped into close friend ships. When his 90 th birth day was com ing up, we wished (with his ap proval) to cel e brate it. So it was that on the 28th July, 2008, a large num ber of guests, in clud ing his clos est rel a tives, ar rived at Pro fes sor Oberc s home in Wroc³aw s Sobótki Street. The weather be haved it self for the oc ca sion and Pro fes sor Oberc was in a happy mood and seemed in good health for his ad vanced years. The af - ter noon in the gar den passed quickly, as we all talked, joked and even sang. Al though we, his col leagues and friends, were a bit wor ried that per haps we might be a lit - tle too bois ter ous, we nev er the less wanted to bring him some hap pi ness be cause we en joyed be ing with him. Af ter a won der ful party, we said good bye to our be loved Pro fes - sor, unware that very soon we would be say ing fare well to him for ever. Józef Oberc was a ded i cated teacher and a won der ful lec turer: he lec tured on phys i cal ge ol ogy, giv ing his first lec tures in the early 1950s and his last in 1996. Stu dents and fel low ac a dem ics al ways paid at ten tion to what Pro - fes sor Oberc had to say, his lec tures be ing care fully pre - pared and given with an au thor ity that only co mes from deep knowl edge. But woe be tide stu dents who were late! Pro fes sor Oberc hated late com ers. He used to lock the door of the lec ture hall by turn ing the knob to what be - came known as the an gle al pha the late-com ers were not al lowed in, and, to their con ster na tion, lost the lec - ture. And missed lec tures had a real im pact be cause the exam was very hard and many stu dents had to take it sev - eral times be fore they passed. Nev er the less, this exam is fondly re mem bered by all the for mer ge ol ogy stu dents at Wroc³aw. Pro fes sor Oberc took an al most fa therly at ti - tude to his stu dents when teach ing the ba sic ge ol ogy course be cause he in cluded, for the stu dent s ben e fit, a cer - tain amount of cul ture, man ners, and re spect. Un der his guid ance, stu dents be came adults. For many years Pro fes sor Oberc held field courses that were ex cep tion ally well or ga nized, both with re spect to the de mands for a par tic u lar stu dent group and for the spe cific teach ing pur pose. What is more, his teach ing as sis - tants had to main tain the same high stan dards. In the field, all his stu dents had to be prop erly pre pared and equipped, and this meant ev ery thing from wear ing the cor rect type of foot wear to hav ing a prop erly sharp ened pen cil. When ar riv ing at the first ex po sure of a stu dent field trip, Pro fes sor Oberc gave a gen eral in tro duc tion to the lo - cal ge ol ogy. Then ev ery one had to make a pre lim i nary study the whole ex po sure, af ter which the stu dents were grouped into pairs (in case of an odd num ber of stu dents in the group, a pair of one was cre ated). Each pair then had to de scribe the ex po sure in de tail, draw a sketch and make an in ter pre ta tion of a given sec tion. Fi nally, the re sults of the work were pre sented in front of the whole party, us ing the cor rect geo log i cal lan guage, and the stu dents de - scrip tions and draw ings, in the field note book, were care - fully checked and cor rected by the as sis tants. When walk - ing to the next ex po sure, ev ery stu dent had to be aware of the car di nal com pass di rec tions and re mem ber where the pre vi ous stop had been lo cated. Fur ther more, the whole group was guided to the next out crop by a se lected stu dent who had to find his way us ing a com pass and the map that he or she had been pro vided with. One of Pro fes sor Oberc s main aims when tak ing field classes was in ad di tion to pro vid ing geo log i cal ed u ca tion to de velop good field hab its and tech niques so that the stu dents, as a re sult of the proper train ing, knew how to tackle dif fi cult out crops when on their own in di vid ual map ping as sign ments. Pro fes sor Oberc knew well that a sleepy stu dent, im prop erly equipped for field work, can eas ily be over whelmed by the dif fi cul ties posed by map - ping. Hence his de mand that stu dents go to bed early and be prop erly equipped for field work (proper shoes, clothes, ham mer, note book and pen cil) was noth ing more than teach ing them good field hab its and a proper at ti tude to the work in volved. Pro fes sor Oberc su per vised many MSc pro jects. At the be gin ning of each pro ject, the stu dent re ceived a sum - mary of the ge ol ogy of the study area by the Pro fes sor, of -
IN MEM ORY 91 Stu dent field course, Strzelin 1973. (Photo from ar chive of Prof. J. Oberc) ten in con junc tion with one of his as sis tants who might be work ing in the same re gion. Ev ery stu dent had to map an area of about 20 km 2, and there were no ex cep tions: both the girls and the boys got broadly the same size of map - ping area. Hav ing said that, the Pro fes sor did take some ex tra care of the girls, par tic u larly at the start when ac com - mo da tion was re quired. For ex am ple, on the way to the field, he used to stop the van sud denly in a vil lage and go into a house that he liked the look of. Af ter a while, he came back with the owner and we dis cov ered that he had suc cess fully or gan ised the con di tions of rent ing a room for the du ra tion of the field work. The rented rooms were al - ways good qual ity, and the rental con di tions very of ten in - cluded meals for the stu dent. No body ever knew how Pro - fes sor Oberc se lected these places, be cause it ap peared that he had never been to that par tic u lar house be fore. But he re mained a de mand ing su per vi sor and at the end of the field work he al ways came back to see the re sults of the geological mapping. In 1981 Pro fes sor Oberc su per vised a unique geo log i - cal ex pe di tion to Ice land, or ga nized over a pe riod of some 8 months by the Stu dent Geo log i cal So ci ety whose pres i - dent at the time was Antoœ Stryjewski (nick-named Starosta). The ex pe di tion com prised stu dents and re search ers, in clud ing Ryszard Kryza and Andrzej Muszyñski, of the In sti tute of Geo log i cal Sci ences at the Uni ver sity of Wroc³aw. The jour ney to Ice land was made via an in cred i ble one-month sea cross ing in a sail ing ship, the s.y. Wo³odyjowski, com manded by Cap tain Danuta Remiszewska and three pro fes sional sail ors, two of whom also hap - pened to be ge ol o gists. On the ship, Pro fes sor Oberc had all the ap pear ance and con fi dence of some one who had been at sea all his life. The stay in Ice land it self pre sented many real phys i cal chal lenges for the group: the mem bers of the ex pe di tion had to cover long dis tances over roadless ba saltic lava and tephra ter rain; cross freez ing gla cial rivers, or still-hot lava flows; and climb the smok ing crater of Hekla, the Ice lan dic gate to hell. But it was n t all hard work: the ex pe di tion also en joyed the oc ca sional swim in some hot vol ca nic springs. It was an unforgettable adventure for all the participants of that expedition. Pro fes sor Oberc s travel ad ven tures, how ever, were by no means re stricted to Ice land he was a globe trot ter. Many ex cur sions to all parts of Eu rope and to se lected re - gions in Asia, Af rica and South Amer ica, pro vided him Prof. Józef Oberc among his fam ily and friends cel e brat ing 90 th birth day on 28 July 2008. (Photo by A. Stryjewski) with opportunities to observe a wide variety of geological struc tures and pro cesses. This wide ex pe ri ence helped forge his open mind to dif fer ent the o ries and to hone his nat u ral abil ity to see the clues nec es sary to solve a geo log i - cal prob lem. He had the cour age and knowl edge to think of ge ol ogy on a global scale. In 1971, one of his as sis tants, Jan Koziar, turned at ten tion to the then poorly known, and def i nitely rather shock ing, ex pand ing Earth the ory. Pro fes sor Oberc soon be came very in ter ested in that the - ory and sup ported Koziar s re search on it, along with later con tri bu tions by Leszek Jamrozik. He ex pressed his sup - port for the ex pand ing Earth the ory in two pub li ca tions and ar ranged a re search pro ject at the In sti tute of Geo log i - cal Sci ences within which the the ory was be ing de vel oped. Pro fes sor Oberc s pa tron age of the ex pand ing Earth the - ory re sulted in con sid er able prog ress in a range of as pects of that the ory and, con se quently, al lowed Jan Koziar to prepare original undergraduate courses on global tectonics that were given for sev eral years start ing in 2001. Even up to his last days, Professor Oberc remained interested in how research on the expanding Earth theory was progressing. It only rarely hap pened that col leagues could get on a first name ba sis with Pro fes sor Oberc. For many rea sons, call ing him Józef was sim ply im pos si ble, not least be - cause the re spect with which he was held de manded a nec - es sary for mal ity. But Pro fes sor Oberc was at heart a very sociable person. Although understandably somewhat of - fi cial to un der grad u ate stu dents, he mel lowed sig nif i - cantly with his MSc stu dents, and each grad u ate be came his col league. Youn ger mem bers of staff be came his friends. This he reg u larly dem on strated by look ing af ter his youn ger col leagues not only sci en tif i cally but also as a per son on whom they could rely: if it was nec es sary, col - leagues could even bor row some money from him just be - fore they got their monthly wages. And he al ways re mem - bered the per sonal occasions of his colleagues, such as namedays and birthdays. Ev ery year, Pro fes sor s nameday was cel e brated at the In sti tute, and this be came a sort of reg u lar hap pen ing in Wroc³aw ge ol ogy. Usu ally he came to the In sti tute around
92 IN MEM ORY noon and soon af ter wards the first guests started to ar rive, individually or in groups from particular departments. Among the guests there were also rep re sen ta tives from other in sti tutes of the uni ver sity, from the fac ulty, and from other geo log i cal in sti tu tions in Wroc³aw. All came with greet ings and bunches of flow ers. Pro fes sor Oberc en joyed these days and was an ex traor di nary host, al ways in a cor dial mood, and treat ing ev ery body as a spe cial guest. In vit ing the guests to the ta ble, he used to say those won der ful words: please, help your self, be cause no body should leave the ta ble with an empty stom ach. It was al - ways a merry oc ca sion se ri ous top ics were certainly discussed, but there were always stories and jokes, too. Pro fes sor Oberc was an ex cel lent dis cus sion part ner be cause he had that rare fea ture, the abil ity to lis ten care - fully: some times so care fully that his dis cus sion part ner would be forced to think of ev ery sin gle word in or der to keep the clar ity of thought. He was al ways very in ter ested in po lit i cal changes in our coun try. His at ti tude to the com mu nist re gime was def i nitely neg a tive, and af ter the change of the po lit i cal sys tem he did not ac cept the range of so lu tions that were im posed af ter the Round Ta ble agree ment. Even be fore the Sol i dar ity Trade Un ion had been es tab lished, Pro fes sor Oberc helped fund un der - ground publishing, later becoming a member of Solidarity it self. Dur ing the pe riod of mar tial law in Po land, his col - league Jan Koziar was wanted and had to stay un der - ground: Pro fes sor Oberc sup ported him and of ten met him se cretly. One such meet ing was out side Wroc³aw, in a lit tle wood near the Odra river, where, un der hard field con di tions, they pre pared a pa per for pub li ca tion and a lec ture to be given by Leszek Jamrozik at an in ter na tional geo log i cal con fer ence (The XIIIth Con gress of the Carpatho-Balkan Geological Association, 1985). This meeting was a suc cess, though the ten sional-grav i ta tional model of orogen evolution that was discussed has yet to receive widespread recognition. One topic of con ver sa tion that al ways pro voked fond mem o ries in Pro fes sor Oberc was that ex traor di nary Ice - land expedition. Upon the expedition s return to Poland, Pro fes sor Oberc re mained on very friendly terms with its par tic i pants. He loved to meet the Ice land Group at his home and on var i ous oc ca sions such as his nameday. Over time, the orig i nal group al lowed a privilaged few oth ers to join, de spite their never hav ing been to Ice land. These nameday par ties at the Pro fes sor s home were al ways fine and friendly events, though of ten in ter rupted by phone calls be cause, as ever, a great num ber of peo ple wanted to ex press their best wishes to Professor Oberc on such occasions. We will al ways re mem ber Pro fes sor Józef Oberc as a great sci en tists and a won der ful per son, a man who had el - e gance, a man who could be very sen si tive to the needs of oth ers and who pos sessed wis dom and great sense of hu - mour. And we will not for get his char ac ter is tic Lvov City ac cent or his close ness and friend ship. And while all this is true, a cer tain aura of mys tery will always surround him.
