OPLATEK MASS, DINNER & CHRISTMAS SONGS Join us for the Polish tradition Oplatek Party on January 22, 2017, at 3:00pm in Liebrich Hall, starting with Mass in church at 2:00pm. After Mass we will celebrate the Christmas season with a traditional Polish dinner and then English and Polish Christmas Carols, songs and fellowship. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at the rectory. The Breaking of the Oplatek One of the most beautiful and most revered Polish customs is the "breaking of the oplatek." The use of the Christmas wafer (oplatek) is practiced not only by native Poles in Poland, but by people all over the world whose ancestors came from Poland. The "oplatek" is a thin wafer, made of flour and water. For table use, it is white. In Poland, colored wafers are used to make Christmas tree decorations. On Christmas Eve, the whole family gathers and waits impatiently for the appearance of the first star. With its first gleam, they all approach a table covered with hay and a snow-white table cloth. A vacant chair and a place setting is reserved for the unexpected guest, always provided for in hospitable Polish American homes. The father or eldest member of the family reaches for the wafer, breaks it in half and gives one half to the mother. Then each of them breaks a small part of each other's piece and, after a warm kiss, they wish each other long life, good health, joy and happiness, not only for the holiday season, but for the coming year and for many years to come. 3

QUESTIONS OF THE WEEK Matthew 2:1-12 Why do you think the leadership and the people in Jerusalem were "greatly troubled" at news of "the newborn king of the Jews"? Isaiah 60:1-6 Isaiah announced this prophecy in the aftermath of Israel's seventy-year exile in Babylon, around 500 BC. How do you imagine the Israelites reacted to his vision? Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Paul startled many of his Jewish contemporaries with the revelation that the Gentile believers in Christ were "coheirs" and "copartners" in the promises God made to Israel. Who would you consider today outsiders to the faith? SACRAMENTAL LIFE BAPTISM: One Preparation Class is required. The Class will meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m. in the Rectory Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the second and fourth Sunday of the month, attend Noon Mass then Baptism immediately following. School news THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD Physical Education News Last month, St. William students had fun with obstacle courses, and we had beautiful weather for it! Preschool through 3rd grade kids had fun running through courses that were made for them. Our 4th through 8th graders had the opportunity to design and create their own. On the first day, they were divided into two teams, and each team had to design an obstacle course. On the second day, they had the chance to finetune them. Then they had to run through the opposite team s course while being timed to see which team was the quickest. Our Kindergarteners got a special treat on their second day. The 8th graders designed and built 2 courses especially for their Kindergarten buddies, and they ran through both courses together. Everyone had a blast with this creative and active play! We are very proud of how our students create, work, and play together. "And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was." In our day and age, the star of Christmas has become a kind of decorative symbol that adorns manger scenes and Christmas trees. It suggests something good and bright and holy, a visual indicator that the "Light of the world" has appeared. But today, on the feast of the Epiphany, we recall that originally, this star was not just a pretty symbolic ornament. This star was a sign from God that intervened in the operations of the physical universe. The Magi understood that this star was sent from God to indicate where his Son would be born. Of course it should not surprise us in this season of all seasons that God should choose to order the universe according to his purposes. Jesus has just been born of a virgin! God has just taken on human flesh. These events in themselves are extraordinary divine interventions-miracles that defy the standard operation of things. Why shouldn't God choose to send a luminous star where he wants it, when he wants it? Why shouldn't he reveal his plan through the things that he created in the first place? The beauty of today's feast is found, in part, in the fact that the Magi were able to recognize this sign from God. They waited for it, they saw it, and they rejoiced in it: "They were overjoyed at seeing the star." We too should be overjoyed in this season of God's special revelation to us. We may need the eyes to recognize it, but truly we have waited for a Savior, we have seen his appearance at Christmas, and now it is time to celebrate! God is at work in our physical world. He has come here, now to save us. This is cause for rejoicing! WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: In our church, on the feast of Epiphany, we write the initials C+M+B over the doorway, what does this stand for or mean? Answer: Epiphany, like Christmas, is celebrated in various ways by different nationalities and cultures. The customs and traditions surrounding these days give them a distinct feel and meaning. In many Slavic traditions, Epiphany is observed by marking the year on the mantle of the entrance to a room or house. In the center of the year are the initials of the traditional names of the three Wise Men: Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar. An alternative explanation asserts that the initials stand for the Latin "Christus Mansionem Benedicat," "Christ bless this house." Regardless of the interpretation, the purpose is to ask God's blessing on the home, marking it as though the Wise Men had come and found therein the Christ Child. It also recalls the marking of the doorways in Egypt with the blood of the lamb so that the angel of death would pass over. God's blessing comes to each home as a source of protection and grace. 5
