Mother Teresa WEDDING BANNS Brad Zaciek & Amanda Piontkowski (II) Robert Ortenzi & Peggy Wright (II) POLSKA MSZA ŒWIÊTA Procesja Ofiarowanie: Na Komuniê: Zakoñczenie My chcemy Boga #274 Czarna Madonna #205 Wszystko Tobie #173 Bo e coœ Polskê #271 WELCOME St. Stanislaus is reaching out in service to our diverse neighborhood peoples. Please be generous in your support of the many good works of our Parish. St. Stanislaus depends upon the regular support of its membership and the generosity of those who visit here. Please look upon your financial gift or sacrifice as a way of giving praise to God along with the many from earlier generations who have worshiped and prayed here for 130 years. A few years after our current church of St. Stanislaus had been completed, the Catholic world lost one of its contemporary saints to tuberculosis. The date was September 30, 1897. The saint was Therese of Lisieux. Fast forward another hundred years to find Teresa of Calcutta at her death on September 5, 1997. Both Theresas were considered as missionaries, however, each executed that vocation differently. The Little Flower, as Therese of Lisieux was known, performed her missionary work from the confines of her sickbed having been assigned missionaries for whom she would pray. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, on the other hand, began her mission in Calcutta and, subsequently, was able to travel around the world to perform the work of Jesus. Some fifty years before she died Teresa founded the order known as the Missionaries of Charity, a name which she believed was told to her directly from Jesus. He told her: You have become my spouse for my love.. I want Missionaries of Charity who will be my fire of love amongst the poor, the sick, the dying, and the little children. The Missionaries of Charity have illuminated our world ever since. Their chief motivation, as Mother Teresa would say, was not to do social work, but to adore Christ in the littlest and weakest of his children, and to bring Christ the souls for which he thirsts. We must realize immediately that these children of whom she speaks are not only what we would refer to as youngsters. No, she was also referring to people impoverished by the poverty of meaninglessness and loneliness, even abandonment, including the feeling of abandonment by God. In a sense, she tended to people with whom she shared all of those features during so much of her life even as onlookers saw her as someone intoxicated by God. She endured her trial of faith for fifty years and, rather than allowing the thought of being abandoned by God to diminish her seemingly weak faith, rather, she abandoned herself to God. When Agnes Goxha Bojaxhiu (Mother Teresa s original name) is beatified on October 19 th by John Paul II we will be witnesses to an event of which she would have found herself totally unworthy. She was only being herself. She was only doing what Jesus asked her to do. It sounds so simple. PASTORAL MESSAGE AUGUST (SIERPIEN) 31, 2003 THAT FOUR-LETTER WORD We all say it. It s both a verb and a noun. Most of us do it, though some are better at it than others. It has been part of the human condition since the beginning. Many people wish they could do more of it, and some feel they have too much to handle as it is. Some have to drive a great distance to get it, but everyone can find it at home if they just look for it. Lots of it is paid for in some way, though most people feel the money is never an adequate exchange for it. When young people do it, it can be a lot of fun for them, and even a bit dangerous. But as people get older, it often becomes more of a duty or a burden than the adventure it had once been. We church people also call it a gift from God. Imagine! Something that is such a mixed experience, that causes such wonderment and anxiety at the same time, that we can t live with and can t live without this is exactly how we can encounter our loving and caring God in the midst of our world. Is this some kind of divine trick? Just what is this four-letter word? Actually, this is about two four-letter words, each one of which modifies the other. If we have one without the other, it would be incomplete. One without the other is like clapping with one hand lots of wind, but no sound. This weekend, Appreciate what you do, and do what you appreciate what could be a better equation for happiness? our nation celebrates the great gift that one of these words represents. And every celebration of the Eucharist is an encounter with the other word. Give up on our little riddle? Or did you read ahead already? The two four-letter words are work and love. This weekend we set aside some time in our country to celebrate Labor Day. We acknowledge that the opportunity to work, and to do so with dignity and justice, is not only a privilege but also a right. In religious terms, we say similar things when we say that work is a sharing in the ongoing creation that is initiated and sustained by our loving God. To be given the gift of work is also to be given a share in the creating power of God himself. Yet, how often do we experience our work as a drudgery, a penance, something to be gotten through so that we can finally get on to the things that really matter to us. I imagine that most people would say that their jobs are simply a way to get what they need so that they can provide for themselves and their families, and perhaps to enjoy a few creature comforts along the way. Ask you friends and family members: Do they love the work they do, simply because they see the dignity inherent in it? Just as our work calls us to love what we are given to do, so also is the reverse true love of another person requires a lot of work. If loves comes too easily, for a long time, then it loses its vitality and becomes a weak substitute for the intensity of the real thing. Real love should be exhausting! This is revealed in God s love for us, in his having worked at creating the world for our use and in having entrusted us with its care. God is love, God is work now that s a four letter word! Fr. Dlatego w³aœnie w pierwszym czytaniu, ponad trzy tysi¹ce lat temu, patriarcha Jozue pyta³ zgromadzony lud i pyta dziœ: Rozstrzygnijcie, komu chcecie s³u yæ? A ona, odpowiedÿ - moja i twoja - stanowi o wiêzi cz³owieka z Bogiem. ks. Jerzy
