August 24, 2014 21st Ordinary Sunday Page Four Reasons to Reconnect With Your Catholic Faith A timely opportunity to mature in your faith For many of us Catholics, faith was authentic, but it was also passed down from our parents and grandparents. We certainly benefitted from this, but more as recipients than as active participants. Perhaps we even celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation as teenagers, but still we were on the receiving side. Isn t it like that with a lot of things? It s how we receive language, everyday skills, our position in the family or the classroom, even, at times, our occupations. We get into things, receive them, but we don t think about them. Then, one day a light turns on and we understand things more from the inside than the outside, more as active participants, more as mature adults. Faith is no exception to this rule. Faith, received from the outside, cannot grow and have its full force in our lives until we accept it inside, understand it again, experience it from a deeper perspective. More than anything, what we experience when that light turns on is an overwhelming sense of God s total love, and a desire to respond to that love and live in that love. Sometimes this happens on retreats, or at moments of crisis, or when we are involved in a renewal movement. Sometimes it happens in quiet prayer, as the Spirit awakens in us a deeper faith in Jesus Christ. Yet these moments of renewal are only a beginning; our faith still has not yet found its full force in our lives. Reconnecting with our Catholic faith helps us rediscover its beauty and truth and gives us a chance to claim it more deeply for ourselves. A new appreciation of Catholicism Although the fashion of society is to think of all faith all religious expressions as the same, this cannot be true. After all, some faith expressions seem to contradict other faith expressions either Jesus is divine or he is not; either faith contradicts reason or it does not. Reconnecting with your Catholic faith can bring a renewed appreciation of what Catholicism, distinctly, has to offer modern believers: 1) a tradition that goes back to the Apostles themselves; 2) an expression of faith that appreciates reason; 3) a range of spiritualities over twenty centuries of Christianity; 4) the discipline and challenge of the seven sacraments, particularly the Holy Eucharist; 5) a Church with authority, which does not abuse that authority, but leaves plenty of room for individual expression; 6) a faith that is not trapped either in the next world or in this world, but relates each to the other in hope; 7) an approach to Scripture that allows for non literal understanding; 8) an institution that, while open to change, does not flap with the latest wind; and 9) most of all, the assurance of our communion with God, in Jesus and the Spirit. www.pemdc.com

We ask that if you have a loved one serving in the military, to please contact the rectory office to give us the name of the soldier, branch of service, and rank, so the whole parish can pray for your loved one. If your address has changed or if you are moving out of our parish and no longer wish to be a parishioner, please notify the rectory at 773 622 5900 ex. 225 Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. THANK YOU! What does it mean to have a Mass "offered" for someone? An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for several reasons: in thanksgiving, for the intentions of another person or as is most common, for the repose of the soul of someone who has died for the souls in purgatory. One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one s soul. We find not only the origins of this practice dating to the early Church but we also clearly recognize its importance. Offering Mass for a special Intention is a long standing tradition in the Catholic Church. It is usually considered that special graces are obtained for whom the Mass is said. If you would like to have a Mass said for someone, please contact the Parish Office 773 622 5900 ex. 225. They will help you with the dates and times which are available. The stipend or offering given, signifies the sacrificial nature of giving of something of yourself to associate more intimately with Christ who offers himself in the Eucharist. THIS WEEK AT ST. Zawsze mile wspominam moje pierwsze miejsce pracy czyli Władysławowo oraz kolejne miejsca mojej posługi: Warszawę, Tarnów oraz w parafię Serca Pana Jezusa w Szczecinie. W 2008 przyleciałam do Ameryki i pracowałam w południowej części Chicago posługując w zakrystii i Polskiej Katolickiej Szkole. Miniony rok spędziłam w Polsce będąc w Domu Modlitwy, gdzie większą część dnia spędzałam w ciszy i modlitwie. Obecnie czuję się posłana do parafii św. Ferdynanda i z każdym dniem podoba mi się tu coraz bardziej. Jestem zadowolona, że mogę w parafii św. Ferdynanda służyć Bogu i ludziom.

August 24, 2014 21st Ordinary Sunday Page Twelve
August 24, 2014 21st Ordinary Sunday Page Thirteen There s a line in one of today s Scripture readings that impacts me every time I come across it. Actually, there are a lot of good lines in the readings for this 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time. The question that Jesus directs specifically to Peter in the Gospel (after the disciples at large tell Jesus that others identify him as the Baptist, or Elijah, or Jeremiah, or another prophet) is one of them: But who do you say that I am? The letter from Paul to the Romans has some probing thoughts concerning the wisdom and knowledge of God: How inscrutable are his judgments and how unsearchable are his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor? The line I m considering in the moment, though the one I most connect with is from Isaiah in the first reading, for thus says the Lord regarding the demotion of Shebna as master of the palace and the promotion of Eliakim: I will fix him like a peg in a sure spot. If the best similes are the ones that make us picture something in our mind s eye with laser focus and really get the image the author presumably wants us to get, then this one works for me. The larger text offers details as God addresses the shamed Shebna: I will thrust you down from your office and pull you down from your station. On that day, I will summon my servant Eliakim, son of Hilkiah; I will clothe him with your robe, and gird him with your sash, and give over to him your authority. Then God speaks directly of his plans for Eliakim: He shall be a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Judah. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) St. Ferdinand Parish place the key of the House of David on Eliakim s shoulder; when he opens, no one shall shut, when he shuts, no one shall open. Then he uses that meaningful simile. Again, I will fix him like a peg in a sure spot, to be a place of honor for his family In truth, it s not nearly as specific as the lines preceding it, and yet it is the image I walk away with. Millenniums later and ago Jesus fixes Peter in the same way. Recognizing the play on words (that Peter in Greek is Petros, and rock is petra) is always fun as we consider Christ s message to his friend following Peter s acknowledgement that Jesus is the Christ: Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church. Then, similar to Eliakim before him, Peter receives the keys to the Kingdom and learns, Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Later in Matthew s Gospel, Jesus gives this binding and loosing authority to all of the disciples, but Peter alone remains the rock of the Church, and Peter alone holds the keys. From Peter, then, flows the very foundation of the Church to each of us, and from Peter and the disciples flow the authority of the Church to Francis and our bishops. Eliakim and Peter are fixed like a peg in a sure spot. As disciples of the Christ, we are secured the same. Securely. In the surest of spots.
