P A R I S H N E W S TWENTY-EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 15, 2017 I can do all things in him who strengthens me. - Philippians 4:13 TODAY S READINGS First Reading - On this mountain the LORD will make for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines (Isaiah 25:6-10a). Psalm - I shall live in the house of the Lord all the days of my life (Psalm 23). Second Reading - God will supply whatever you need (Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20). Gospel - I have prepared my banquet, and everything is ready. Come to the feast! (Matthew 22:1-14 [1-10]). LIVING GOD S WORD Over the past few weeks the scriptures have provided us with a feast of images of God s abundant mercy. Today s image of the heavenly banquet both completes the picture of God s generosity and shifts our attention to our response to God s generous invitation. REFLECTING ON GOD S WORD As Catholics we are invited to come to the feast at significant moments in our lives. Baptisms, First Communions, marriages, ordinations, and funeral rites are all commonly celebrated within the feast of the Eucharist. The clothes we wear from the baptismal garment to the funeral pall, from fancy wedding garb to simple white albs reflect our baptismal commitment to be faithful to Christ until we come to the eternal heavenly feast that our eucharistic celebrations anticipate. All are invited to come to the feast. All are invited to dress in the garment of Christ. Not all respond to the invitation. It has often been asked what would happen if, some Sunday morning, praying as we always do for Christ to come again, Christ actually did return. Would we come to his feast? Would we prefer our small private gathering to the huge mass of people we don t really want to know? Would we be found wearing the garment of faithfulness we were given in baptism? Where would we be on that day? THE HEAVENLY BANQUET The mountain of the Lord described in today's first reading is a place where there is no more hunger, no more weeping, and no more division of any kind. We need to pause and ponder these images every now and then, especially given the fact that we live in such a fractured world. The responsorial psalm continues to paint a picture of a place where only goodness and kindness flourish. These readings describe the heavenly banquet, to which God calls each of us through baptism and continues to call us throughout our lives. Let us "RSVP" to God's invitation and live our lives consistent with gospel values so that one day we will be welcomed to the table of the kingdom. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In 1971, the Vatican Congregation for Divine Worship completed a survey of the presidents of the national liturgical commissions around the world. How were children doing in the liturgical reform? Probably to their surprise, the cardinals learned of special weekday Masses for children designed to teach them how to participate on Sunday, Masses with separate components for children. The decision was made quickly to develop adaptations for Masses where children were a majority of the assembly. Changes would include a simpler structure, understandable texts, a simplified Lectionary, more active participation, and most surprisingly, new Eucharistic Prayers. By 1973 the work was done, and with very specific advice from Pope Paul VI, including the need for two new Eucharistic Prayers, the Directory for Masses with Children was published on December 20, a timely Christmas gift for the children of the world. The prayers are the first to be written fresh in a modern language--not Latin, but French and German--then translated into English, Italian, and Spanish. With a sense of caution, these new prayers were approved for three years, until 1977, but it soon became apparent that they had truly been embraced.
2018 MASS BOOK: It will be necessary for everyone who would like to schedule Masses for their loved ones in 2018 to come to the rectory or call (718) 447-3937. Thank you and God Bless. Next week, we will celebrate World Mission Sunday. Each year, the entire Church is invited to support the young mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Paci- c Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve the poorest of the poor. This year, we are invited to Chat With The Pope to learn more about his missions. Scan this year s World Mission Sunday poster using Facebook Messenger for your mobile device, or learn more at ChatWithThePope.org Dear Jesus, Divine Physician and Healer of the sick, we turn to you in this time of illness. O dearest comforter of the troubled, alleviate our worry and sorrow with your gentle love, and grant n us the grace and strength to accept this burden. Dear God, we place our worries in your hands. We place our sick under your care and humbly ask that you restore your servant to health again. Above all, grant us the grace to acknowledge your will and know that whatever you do, you do for the love of us. Amen. POLISH CATHOLICS GATHER AT BORDER FOR VAST ROSARY PRAYER EVENT - THE NEW YORK TIMES Polish Catholics clutching rosary beads gathered at locations along the country s 2,000-mile border on Saturday for a mass demonstration during which they prayed for salvation for Poland and the world. Many participants described it as demonstration against what they see as the secularization of the country and the spread of Islam s influence in Europe. The event, Rosary at the Borders, was sponsored in part by several state-owned companies and was timed to coincide with the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. It also commemorated the 1571 naval Battle of Lepanto between Christian fighters, under orders from the Pope, and the Ottoman Empire. Organizers noted that in the battle, the Catholic fleet defeated the much larger Muslim fleet, saving Europe from Islam. Rosary at the Borders took place in 320 churches near Poland s border and 4,000 so-called prayer zones, including the biggest international airport in Poland, a nation moving increasingly to the right. The daylong event began with a morning Mass, with the rosary prayer then starting at 2 p.m. and ending about two hours later. The event was planned by a lay organization called the Solo Dios Basta Foundation, or God Alone Suffices, but was supported by the clergy. The group, which said on its website that the rosary is a mighty weapon against evil, anticipated that about a million people in Poland and around the world would take part. Rev. Pawel Rytel-Andrianik, spokesman for the Polish Bishops Conference, said it was the second-largest prayer event in Europe after the 2016 World Youth Day, though it was too soon to provide exact numbers. During the prayer, I was at the Chopin airport in Warsaw, and there were so many people that they were pouring out of the chapel, Father Rytel-Andrianik said. This was an initiative started by lay people, which makes it even more extraordinary. Millions of people prayed the rosary together. This exceeded the boldest expectations of the organizers. More than 90 percent of Poland s 38 million citizens are Roman Catholic. Marek Jedraszewski, the archbishop of Krakow in southern Poland, said during his sermon on Saturday morning that people should pray for Europe to remain Europe. Let s pray for other nations of Europe and the world to understand that we need to return to the Christian roots of European culture if we want Europe to remain Europe, Archbishop Jedraszewski said. It s a really serious thing for us, Basia Sibinska told The Associated Press. We want to pray for peace, we want to pray for our safety. Of course, everyone comes here with a different motivation. But the most important thing is to create something like a circle of a prayer alongside the entire border, intense and passionate. In the northern city of Gdansk, Krzysztof Januszewski told The A.P. that he worried Europe was being threatened by Islamic extremists. In the past, there were raids by sultans and Turks and people of other faiths against us Christians, said Mr. Januszewski. Today, Islam is flooding us, and we are
afraid of this, too. We are afraid of terrorist threats and we are afraid of people departing from the faith. The demonstration was endorsed by many Polish celebrities, athletes and several politicians from the ruling conservative Law and Justice party. But others criticized the demonstration. Krzysztof Luft, a former member of the country s largest opposition party, the liberal Civic Platform, wrote on Twitter, A ridicule of Christianity on a massive scale. They treat religion as a tool for maintaining backwardness in the Polish backwater. WIADOMOŚCI PARAFIALNE DWUDZIESTA ÓSMA NIEDZIELA ZWYKŁA 15 PAZDZIERNIKA 2017 Cytat dnia: Niech Ojciec naszego Pana Jezusa Chrystusa, przeniknie nasze serca swoim światłem, abyśmy wiedzieli, czym jest nadzieja waszego powołania. (Ef 1, 17-18) Czytania: Pierwsze czytanie: Iz 25, 6-10a Psalm: Ps 23, 1-6 Drugie czytanie: Flp 4, 12-14, 19-20 Ewangelia: Mt 22, 1-14 Słowo Boże, które dziś usłyszymy, porównuje bliskie obcowanie człowieka z Bogiem do wybornej uczty. I my mamy sto powodów, by zrezygnować z udziału w uczcie Boga: to spacer, bo piękna pogoda, to interesujący program w telewizji, to goście, którzy nas odwiedzili itp.
Uczestniczenie w niej to niezwykła szansa. SAKRAMENT CHRZTU ŚWIĘTEGO przyjęli: LIAM SACHI WANKOWICZ KAIA ZUBER Gratulujemy Rodzicom i Chrzestnym.
