(773) 491-6929 Treasures From Our Tradition As soon as Christmas ends, people begin planning for Easter! Originally, the source of our Paschal Triduum was but a single liturgy extending from Saturday sundown to sunrise on Easter Sunday. The two days leading up to the liturgy were days of fast, not only for the elect, but for the church preparing to baptize them. A ifth-century pope explained that the church imitated the apostles, who were in hiding with their grief from the arrest of Jesus, and therefore sacraments, even penance, were forbidden. Inevitably, though, people wanted to come together, and so eventually a Liturgy of the Word developed for Good Friday. This was the irst step toward today s shape of the Triduum, and gradually new ideas were embraced, including the veneration of the cross and a simple Communion service. Interestingly, the Word remained central, since we know that in those days the pope did not receive Communion at this liturgy, even though the faithful had that option. In the other churches of Rome, priests and people received Communion under both species. Although the custom of Communion on Good Friday took hold, it did not endure past the Middle Ages. The central liturgies of the year slowly unraveled and disappeared from parish life. Remember that there were no seminaries in those days, and books were a rare luxury. Most priests could only manage to celebrate a simple low Mass, and few parishes could afford the ritual books that would guide a priest through the complex forms. Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Page Three THREE MISSIONS Today we begin with one of the servant songs from the book of Isaiah, a song prophetic of Jesus ministry of service. Isaiah s mission is not only to bring back the children of Jacob to gather in Israel; it is also to be a light to the nations (Isaiah 49:6). Jesus Christ, as servant, will be the ful illment of the ancient prophecy and the basis of the new. This Sunday we begin a series of readings from Paul s letter to the Corinthians. Here Paul is identi ied by his mission: he is an apostle of Jesus Christ. The church at Corinth to whom he addresses this letter is also identi ied: it is part of the universal church of God. The Corinthians are called to holiness, as are all Christians. Though the feast of the Baptism of the Lord was celebrated last Monday, today s Gospel also alludes to the importance of that event. The reading emphasizes that Jesus outranks John: his baptism in the Spirit will eradicate sin. Jesus accepts John s baptism, even though it is he himself who is the Lamb of God. Copyright J. S. Helping a loved one with an alcohol addiction Seeing a loved one suffering with a drinking problem can be emotionally draining, and trying to help them can be even harder. Approximately 7.7 million U.S. adults are currently married to or living with a partner with an alcohol use disorder, according to a study from the University at Buffalo Research Institute. The research highlights the considerable psychological distress that can be caused by living with an alcoholic partner. Alcoholism can be one of the most challenging psychiatric and social diseases to treat because of the broad availability of alcohol and the social acceptance of drinking, says Dr. Aaron Malina, neuropsychologist at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Ill. Alcoholism very much impacts not only the person drinking, but everyone in his or her social circle. Family and general social support is a key ingredient in establishing and maintaining sobriety with a loved one. The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence offers these tips: Learn All You Can About Alcoholism and Drug Dependence Speak Up and Offer Your Support Talk to the person about your concerns, including your willingness to go with them and get help. Like other chronic diseases, the earlier addiction is treated, the better. Express Love and Concern Don t wait for your loved one to hit bottom. You may be met with excuses, denial or anger, but be prepared to respond with speci ic examples of behavior that has you worried. Don t Expect the Person to Stop Without Help You have heard it before promises to cut down or stop but it doesn t work. Treatment, support and new coping skills are needed to overcome addiction to alcohol and drugs. Support Recovery as an Ongoing Process Once your friend or family member is receiving treatment or going to meetings, remain involved. While maintaining your own commitment to getting help, continue to support their participation in continuing care, meetings and recovery support groups. To help others, family and friends need to take care of themselves. Although others may not experience the direct effects of the alcohol, they can struggle with the psychological and social consequences of the person s alcohol use at times as much, if not more than the person actively drinking, Dr. Malina says. If you or a loved one is struggling with alcoholism, reach out to your primary care physician, behavioral health provider or a support group.
