Our Blessed Lord has called home our parishioners Waclaw Leszczyñski and Rosemary T. Nelson for whom we promise our prayers. May they and all our other deceased parishioners enjoy peace and happiness in God s Sacred Presence. Communal Reconciliation Liturgy On Tuesday of Holy Week, April 15th, our parish will celebrate the sacrament of Reconciliation in a communal liturgy appropriate to the season of Lent. The celebration will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Church. We especially hope all those who have been prevented by fear from coming to confession, those away from the sacraments for a long time, those who have felt alienated from the Church or the parish, will participate in this celebration of God s loving mercy. All will be asked to acknowledge their sinfulness before God and the gathered community, to seek mercy, and to receive the Church s absolution. Please pray that through this celebration many will be brought home, released from the burden of sin and guilt, and begin healing in Christ. HANDMAIDS E. Konopka, M. April 13, 2003 Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion Page Three TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Although the procession with palms has an unforgettable grip on our imagination, the real emphasis of this day s liturgy is contained in its name: The Sunday of the Lord s Passion. Since 1955, the old custom of a blessing of palms with procession of the people has marked the entry of the Church into a time so rich that it is called Holy Week. The center of today s liturgy, however, is the solemn reading of the Passion, this year taken from Mark s Gospel. Our community is to be transformed by its celebration of Easter, and so this week everything is made new. Soon, the bishop will celebrate the Chrism Mass when the holy oils for the sacraments will be completely replenished and blessed, and transported from the cathedral to every parish. Easter is the first Sunday after the first full moon of springtime. Be on the lookout later this week for this paschal moon, rising in the east at the precise moment the sun sets in the West. Imagine: a day when there is not a single moment when the earth is not bathed in light from the heavens. We are on the threshold of the three great days (Triduum): Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, beginning at sunset on Thursday when the parish gathers in response to the Lord s command: Do this in memory of me. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. Our Financial Support of St. Ferdinand Parish The parishioners of St. Ferdinand s contributed $14,758.47 last weekend as an expression of our regular stewardship of the Church. In addition, we received $510.71 at the First Friday Mass in Polish. We also received support for our parish at the Masses of the Parish Mission in Polish last week; through the monthly Building & Maintenance Fund; the Sharing Christ s Gifts Capital Improvement campaign; and the Easter Flower envelope, among others. Thank you for all that you do to support the many ministries and programs of St. Ferdinand Parish. We have entered into the holiest week of the year. From the Lord s triumphant entrance into Jerusalem, to the celebration of the Last Supper and the institution of the Eucharist, to His suffering, crucifixion, death and Resurrection, we will experience the sacrifice, forgiveness and love of our Savior, Jesus Christ. Holy Week surrounds us with God s never-ending love, challenges us to greater faithfulness in the Holy Spirit, and reminds us of the price Jesus paid to redeem each and every one of us. May it be a grace-filled week for every parishioner and guest of St. Ferdinand Church. Daniel P. First, Ricki Salgado is a graduate of St. Ferdinand School, a senior at St. Pat s, and has worked in the parish office and rectory for the last two years. During the past year he had applied to a number of universities and has been accepted at several, the latest of which is the University of Chicago. Each summer, Ricki has been engaged in a special job. In the Summer of 2001 Ricki served a 6-week internship at Carnegie-Mellon University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During the Summer of 2002 he served a 10-week internship at the Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine. While he was happy with being accepted at several other places, his hope was to enter the U. of C. hopefully with some scholarship assistance. Because of some snafu, his admission documents were never processed and by the time the mistake was discovered, the time for applications had passed. He resubmitted his information and recently received word that he had been accepted. We are truly happy for him and his family that his goal has been achieved at this time and we commend him for his work here and at St. Pat s. His dedication to each of his commitments has been rewarded and we wish him well in his future pursuits. The second piece of good news that we received is another young man who worked here in the rectory, a graduate of our school and Holy Cross High School, Tony Kass. For many of you, Tony needs no introduction since he has worked with our Athletic programs for several years now. Among his many involvements in the parish, Tony also serves as a Eucharistic minister. Tony was sworn in on Friday, April 4th, as a Police Officer for the Village of Oak Par, thus fulfilling one of Tony s hopes and dreams. We congratulate him and his parents, Ben and Sophie Kass, for being the great and proud parents of this fine young man, and we wish Tony all the best in his work. If you re driving through Oak Park and you see flashing lights behind you, pray they are from Tony s squad car. Although you still might get a ticket, you ll have a friendly conversation reminiscing about St. Ferds.

April 13, 2003 Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion Page Nine Atop a crucifix in a Catholic church or home is sometimes found the inscription INRI. The letters commonly appear on a banner affixed to the uppermost quadrant of the cross above the head of the crucified Christ. Not all crucifixes bear the letters, but many do. The letters abbreviate the Latin inscription Jesus Nazarenus Rex Iudoeorum, or Jesus the Nazarene, King of the Jews. According to John s Gospel (19:19-22), Pontius Pilate ordered this inscription to give the name and hometown of the victim and to publicize the grounds for his execution. Soldiers wrote the words in Hebrew, Latin and Greek the languages of the Old Testament, the Roman government and the New Testament. In Christian art, the words are sometimes completely spelled out, but more commonly the Latin text is rendered as a simple acronym. The chief priests of the Jews objected, saying that Pilate should have written, This man said, I am King of the jews. Pilate refused to change the text. His reply became a chilling aphorism of authority in Latin: Quod scripsi scripsi. What I have written, I have written. Thus Pilate let stand the words intended for condemnation, now transformed as affirmation. Pilate would not acknowledge the Support Staff Mrs. Aneta Koæma, Administrative Assistant Mrs. Wendy L. The inscription appears in the other Gospels (Mk 15:26, Mt 27:37, and Lk 23:38), each time with slightly different wording.
