From the Pastor s Desk. Last Sunday we saw Jesus establishing a hierarchy - a sacred order. Today Satan reacts immediately by attacking that order. His ploy is to offer an easy solution to a terrible dilemma. Like all Satanic temptations, it is attractive - at least on the surface. Jesus had just told the disciples that, in order to accomplish his mission, he had to accept the torments of Roman crucifixion. They knew what that meant. After public humiliation, the condemned prisoner spent hours affixed to a beam, gasping for air. Peter reacted in a natural way, just what one would expect from the person second in comm: God forbid, Lord! No such thing shall ever happen to you... Yet it was a satanic temptation. In fact, Peter is the only man in the Gospels whom Jesus addresses as Satan... Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle to me... The temptation must have enticed even Jesus in his humanity. Faced with ghastly torture, he would pray, Father, if it is possible take this cup from me. To make such a prayer is only human. But that is precisely the problem. As Jesus tells Peter, You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do. Fr. Tony Krzyż Pański z tym krzyżem! mógłby ktoś powiedzieć. Bo oto Jezus znowu wzywa nas do wzięcia krzyża i naśladowania Go. O krzyżu łatwo jest mówić: o codziennym krzyżu, o życiowym krzyżu naszych bliźnich, nawet o krzyżu z samym sobą... Gorzej jest z przyjęciem i dźwiganiem go. W jednym wymiarze krzyża słyszymy nienawistny krzyk fanatycznego tłumu: Ukrzyżuj Go! w drugim zaś radosny śpiew: Alleluja, Jezus żyje! Krzyż łączy w sobie przeciwieństwa: smutek i radość, bezsilność i moc, ukrzyżowane życie i pokrzyżowane zakusy śmierci. Padre Antonio
Reflections from Fr. Emil. THE CHURCH - PERFECTED IN GLORY The Church will receive its perfection only in the glory of heaven at the time of Christ's glorious return. Until that day the Church progresses on her pilgrimage amidst this world's persecutions God's consolations. Here below she knows that she is in exile far from the Lord, longs for the full coming of the Kingdom, when she will be united in glory with her king. The Church, through her the world, will not be perfected in glory without great trials. Only then will all the just from the time of Adam, from Abel, the just one, the last of the elect, be gathered in the universal Church in the Father's presence. The Church is in history, but at the same time she transcends. It is only with the eyes of faith that one can see her in her visible reality at the same time in her spiritual reality as bearer of divine life. Fr. Padre Emilio PREPARING FOR THE NEW TRANSLATION OF THE MASS The Liturgy of the Word On the First Sunday of Advent, November 27, 2011, Catholic parishes in the United States will begin praying the texts of the Mass using a new English translation of The Roman Missal. This week, we explore the Liturgy of the Word. We know from the Gospels that Jesus himself listened to the inspired word of God let it shape form him. Through the liturgy, we do the same. The readings we hear at Mass can teach us, but that is not their primary function. Rather, the scriptures are meant to reveal the Lord to us, to let us experience God s presence, to form us in our Christian identity. In the readings proclaimed at Mass, we hear the voice of Christ himself, we recognize the story of God acting in the past in our own lives as well. The homily helps us to see these connections more clearly. Then through the Profession of Faith (Creed) the Prayer of the Faithful, our response to the readings prepares us to enter into the Eucharistic Prayer that follows. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
