Deacon Formation Program University of St. Mary of the Lake, Mundelein Seminary Archdiocese of Chicago Please continue your prayers for deacon candidate Robert Montelongo as Bishop Raymond E. Goedert, D.D., will preside at Robert s institution into the Ministry of Acolyte on Sunday, 23 October 2010, 1:30 p. m., at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception, University of St. Mary of the Lake / Mundelein Seminary in Mundelein. He will be among nine candidates to be instituted into this ministry. As is noted in the words of the Rite of Institution, instituted acolytes have a special role in the Church s ministry. The Rite notes the following responsibilities: Assist priests and deacons in carrying out their ministry at the Eucharist. As special ministers, they are to give Holy Communion to the faithful at the liturgy, and to the sick. Because they are specially called to this ministry, they should strive to live more fully by the Lord s sacrifice and to be molded more perfectly in its likeness. They should seek to understand the deep spiritual meaning of what they do so to offer themselves daily to God as spiritual sacrifices acceptable to Him through Jesus Christ. These are awesome responsibilities. This year, Robert continues to be involved in intensive multidimensional preparation for Holy Orders. Academic and formation classes include Ecclesiology, Liturgical Theology, New Testament, Moral Theology, Canon Law, Homiletics, Mass and sacramental practica; he meets regularly for theological reflection with a small faith sharing group; he continues monthly Spiritual Direction; he will attend a retreat prior to his institution to the ministry of acolyte; and he has been involved in a series of field education experiences. Thus he continues his four -year preparation as a candidate for the diaconate. Presently, there are nearly 500 active deacons in the Archdiocese of Chicago, and 56 men are currently in the Englishspeaking Deacon Formation Program. Please keep Robert, Lili, his family, and all those in formation and their families, in your prayers that they might continue to answer God s call in their lives.

From the Pastor s Desk.. Last Sunday we heard about an important form of prayer - gratitude, giving thanks. We noted that the Mass is the greatest prayer of thanksgiving. Sometimes we call the Mass "the Eucharist" - a Greek word that means to give thanks. This Sunday we hear about another aspect of prayer: persistence, not growing weary, but keeping at it. Persistence also applies to the Mass. If the Mass is the highest form of prayer, we must keep at it - weekly or even daily. Fr. Tony Czy Syn Człowieczy znajdzie wiarę na ziemi, gdy przyjdzie?" To, jakby mimochodem rzucone pytanie, brzmi może trochę przerażająco. Pobrzmiewa w nim jakaś nuta beznadziei. Nie o to jednak chodzi, by przestraszać i dołować. Po tym pytaniu nie następuje odpowiedź - ma ono bowiem pobudzić do myślenia każdą osobę, każdą wspólnotę kościelną, każde pokolenie. Każdy z nas sam musi znaleźć na nie odpowiedź. Chrystus chce nam przypomnieć, że celem życia człowieka jest spotkanie z Bogiem, i w tym kontekście pyta, czy kiedy On powróci, znajdzie dusze gotowe Go przyjąć, aby razem z Nim wejść do domu Ojca" (Jan Paweł II, Rzym, 21.10.2001). Ks. Antoni El domingo pasado escuchamos sobre una forma importante de orar - gratitud, dar gracias. Notamos que la misa es la mayor oracion de gratitud. A veces llamamos la misa "Eucaristia" - una palabra griega qie significa dar gracias. Este domingo escuchamos sobre otro aspecto de oracion: persistencia, no cansarse. Reflections from Fr. Emil. THE EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION Jesus said:"i am the living bread that came down from heaven; if any one eats of this bread, he will live forever;...he who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and...abides in me, and I in him" Jn 6,51 The Eucharist is the heart and the summit of the Church's life, for in it Christ associates his Church and all her members with his sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving offered once for all on the cross to his Father; by this sacrifice he pours out the graces of salvation on his Body which is the Church. The Eucharistic celebration always includes; the proclamation of the Word of God; thanksgiving to God the Father for all his benefits, above all the gift of his Son; the consecration of bread and wine; and participation in the liturgical banquet by receiving the Lord's body and blood. These elements constitute one single act of worship. The Eucharist is the memorial of Christ's Passover, that is, of the work of salvation accomplished by the life, death and resurrection of Christ, a work made present by the liturgical action. Fr. School News The seventh grade students are learning in a variety of engaging ways! On September 27th, the Peace on Earth Film Festival presented a workshop to the middle school students. This film screening, followed by thoughtful discussion, allowed the students to explore their personal stereotypes and their understanding of other cultures. The students also completed follow up projects including an open ended journal entry on peace and a poster portraying what peace means to them. The seventh graders have also been working with their second grade buddies to create a presentation on Puerto Rico for the St. Bruno Hispanic Heritage Celebration. The students created gourds, which are commonly used in the area, and researched the culture of Puerto Rico in order to create a display for the school. The seventh graders are exhibiting excellent leadership when working with their buddies! Nasi uczniowie z klas 7 uczą się, jak opanować sztukę, aby być zaangażowanym w różnych dziedzinach wiedzy. 27 września był przedstawiony film na festiwalu filmowym dotyczący problemów uczniów w klasach średnich. Ten film był poprzedzony wielką dyskusją pozwalającą studentom przedstawić stereotypy i zrozumieć znacznie innych kultur. Studenci mieli przedstawić projekty dotyczące pokoju i mieli wyrazić swoje opinie na temat co znaczy pokój w świecie i dla każdego z nich. Uczniowie 7 klas mieli także warsztaty robocze na temat kultury Hiszpańskiej a szczególnie z Puerto Rico. Studenci byli podzieleni na grupy, aby dzielić się doświadczeniem kultury z Puerto Rico. Studenci z 7 klas przedstawili wspaniałe dzieło, jak powinno się współpracować z innymi. Los estudiantes de séptimo grado estan aprendiendo en diferentes maneras divertidas. El 27 de septiembre, el Festival de Cine Paz en la Tierra presentó un taller a los estudiantes de sexto, séptimo, y octavo. Esta presentación de la película, seguida por discusión cognitiva, permitió a los estudiantes a explorar sus estereotipos personales y su comprensión de otras culturas. Después de esta experiencia los estudiantes tuvieron que completar proyectos, entre ellos escrituras en sus diarios sobre la paz y un cartel mostrando lo que la paz significa para ellos. Los estudiantes de séptimo grado también han estado trabajando con sus compañeros de segundo grado para crear una presentación sobre Puerto Rico en celebración del mes de la Hispanidad. Los estudiantes crearon calabazas, que son utilizadas comúnmente en el área de Puerto Rico, e investigaron la cultura de Puerto Rico para crear una exhibición para la escuela.
