3.0 General information 3.1 Purpose The water unit is designed for heating detached houses; flats heated with single-storey systems, commercial buildings, service centres, utility rooms, etc. Apart from central heating it can also function as a utility water heater. The water unit can work with the heater and floor heating installations powered by means of central heating stoves, gas, oil, electricity or through hydraulic connections. It can also work with stoves fuelled with natural gas, furnace oil, solid fuels and electricity. The water unit is designed to work with either gravity or pump systems of central heating installations and it is produced in accordance with PN-91/B-02413 ( Heating and heat engineering. Safety of open system water heating installations ). The maximum working pressure in the central heating installation must not exceed 0.1 MPa and the temperature of medium must not exceed the limit of 95 C. 3.2 The choice of stove with water unit The heat balance is a matter of great importance when selecting the water unit which has to comply with PN-B-03406. The nominal heat efficiency of a stove should be equal or slightly above than the calculated value. In the case of utility water heating, another 600 W/person in heating balance should be taken into account. 3.2 The water unit structure and equipment (fir. 1) The water unit is made of certified steel sheet (in accordance with PN-EN 13229) in the shape of a cylinder with furnace flues inside (fig. 1 B). The heat exchanger system functions in water space. The water unit has two stub pipes, such as: feeding (fig.1 C) and return (fig.1 D) with an inch internal screw (G1 ). Additional equipment of the water unit system is a broom for cleaning the space between the separator and the exchanger. 4.0 Installation 4.1 Water unit installation (fig. 1) The place intended for the fireplace insert should have a p p r o p r i a t e l o a d c a p a c i t y. T h e t o t a l w e i g h t o f Jøtul I 80 / Jøtul I 530 FL together with the water unit amounts to about 200 kg. The fireplace insert is to be mounted and placed according to the instructions in Jøtul I 80 / Jøtul I 530 FL wood fuelled fireplace installation - mounting and operational manual. Next the water unit is to be placed on the fireplace insert (fig. 1). The seals installed in the bottom and top parts of the water unit should be checked for damage or displacement. Further installation should be done according to the fireplace manual. Warning! The thermometer, as a part of the feeding installation, should be mounted outside the heated air distributor. It is not allowed to connect any plastic installation to the water unit. In the case of a copper installation, separators should be used in order to avoid electro-chemical corrosion. The blow-off valve should be mounted on the return pipe, in the lowest space outside the air distributor. Before further building of the fireplace, the entire water installation and the connection to the flue should be checked for leak tightness. The fireplace housing should be built in a way that makes the disassembly easy for periodic examinations of the water unit and smoke tube connections. 4.1 Connecting the water unit with the heating installation The water unit is prepared to work in an open system with a transfer expansion vessel. It should be installed according to the PN-91/B-02413 only by qualified people. It must be connected to the installation in such a way that in the case of any breakdown it could be easily disconnected. This will allow repairs or replacement. According to the Office of Technical Inspection, the water units are low-temperatures stoves in which the temperature does not exceed 110 C and the working pressure is not higher than 1 bar (0.1 MPa). The water feed can performed through the blow-off valve using elastic hose which should be disconnected after filling the installation. The most important requirements for safety equipment are as follows: the capacity of the expansion vessel should constitute of at least 4% of the heating installation s capacity, the vertical safety pipe should have an internal diameter of minimum 25mm, the circulation pipe should have an internal diameter of minimum 20mm, no valves and equipment can be mounted on the abovementioned pipes, an additional safety valve should be installed when the expansion vessel is mounted in an unheated part of the building. Warning! Starting up the water unit filled with frozen water can stand a risk of explosion. 5.0 Maintenance (fig. 2) 5.1 The water unit maintenance Clean the separator at least once a month, if needed clean more often (fig. 2). 1. 2. English Start cleaning with disassembling of the burning plate. Next, slide out the separator s pin and tip out ash on the stove s bottom or into the ash bin. The dismounting of the vermiculite deflector should be done really carefully due to its weight (about 7 kg or more when full). Enter the broom into the space between the separator and the unit s wall. Clean the surface from the accumulated soot with to-and-fro sliding movements. Warning! The separator s overfilling does not influence either heating functions or technical parameters of the unit. However when the deflector is overfilled, the particles can get through to the atmosphere, polluting it. 3
English Advice It is recommended to clean the water unit when the chimney is still warm (the day after a burning). The chimney draft will remove soot particles out of the building. Frequent cleaning reduces fuel consumption. Using wood with more than 20% of humidity causes soot and creosote accumulation. Before the beginning of the heating season water and smoke connections should be checked in order to secure leak tightness of the installations. After the end of the heating season the entire fireplace and water unit should be cleaned. The accumulated soot in smoke tubes should be removed. Water should not be released throughout the whole operational period, as this action causes shortening of both water unit s and heating installation s longevity (the corrosion of steel elements). It is recommended to use corrosion inhibitors and boiler scale reducers. Cleaning and maintenance after the heating season is necessary for long-lasting and failure-free work of the built-in fireplace with water unit. 5.2 The fireplace insert maintenance The fireplace insert should be cleaned and maintained according to both Jøtul I 80 / Jøtul I 530 FL wood fuelled fireplace installation - mounting and operational manual. and in compliance with valid construction and fire protection law. 6.0 Safety precautions Secure functioning of the fireplace insert with water unit depends on correct operational conditions and proper handling. Mounting and usage basic rules The water unit installation should be carried out in compliance with PN-91/B-02413. The connection of fireplace insert to smoke pipe ought to be checked for leak tightness. It is required to provide an appropriate level of ventilation in the room where the stove is placed. Water refilling should take place only after cooling down the water unit. Lighting up the frozen fireplace when the air in the rooms is warm run a risk of destroying the water unit. Placing the fire protection equipment near the fireplace such as dry powder extinguisher is advisable. Fireplace insert as well as the water unit, should be operated by an adult who is familiar with low temperature stove manuals and appropriate safety precautions. 7.0 Additional remarks Warning! The fireplace should not be started up without first fil-ling the water unit with water. If the water unit runs out of water, it is recommended to extinguish the fire and once the installation cooled down, refill the water unit with water through the blow-off valve. After refilling, the fire may be lit up again. Feeding warm installation with cold water can cause its damage. It is not allowed to use cut-off valves or any other devices on the pipes connecting the water unit to the expansion vessel. The presence of any unattended children near the lit up fireplace is forbidden. During work with flammable or dusty materials (scraping etc.) in the fireplace insert surroundings, the fire should be extinguished. It is not allowed to place any flammable objects near or on the fireplace. Used up water unit should be given away to an authorised scrap purchasing point/centre. 8.0 Operational problems troubleshooting Water overheating in the water unit No electric power Pump controller damage Pump breakdown Air-bound installation Closed radiators Too much fuel Too small pieces of wood Too high combustion air factor Low temperature in the water unit Contaminated exchanger Contaminated flue pipe Too high water flow velocity Ill-designed or ill-performed installation check up the fuses or use feeding backup power supply (UPS) repair or replace repair or replace the pump enable the air escape from the installation open valves reduce the amount of fuel use wood with a larger diameter close the air throttle use wood with a larger diameter clean the accumulated soot clean the flue pipe (chimney sweeper) reduce the velocity of water flow redesign and repair the installation 4
