P A R I S H N E W S PALM SUNDAY April 9, 2017 God greatly exalted [Christ] and bestowed on him the name which is above every name. - Philippians 2:9 TODAY S READINGS Gospel at the Procession with Palms - Jesus' entry into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1-11). First Reading - In spite of my sufferings I am not disgraced. I am not put to shame (Isaiah 50:4-7). Psalm - My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? (Psalm 22) Second Reading - Christ emptied himself, and God filled this emptiness with exaltation (Philippians 2:6-11). Gospel - The account of Christ's passion according to Matthew (Matthew 26:14 -- 27:66 [27:11-54]). LIVING GOD S WORD We pray that we will follow Jesus faithfully all the days of our life, recognizing him as the one who continues to come in the name of the Father bringing life. We ask that we may trust in God as Jesus did until we see God face to face. REFLECTING ON GOD S WORD Today s Gospel before the blessing of the palms presents an exuberant scene. Imagine the large crowd just outside Jerusalem spreading their cloaks on the road, breaking off palm fronds, strewing them about and waving them as Jesus passes by. Hear the people shouting, Hosanna to the Son of David. As Jesus enters the city, the people there are asking, Who is this? The crowd accompanying him answers: This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth of Galilee. This is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. A journey of joy. But a few days later Jesus took his last journey: a winding walk from the upper room on Thursday night out to the garden of Gethsemane, then to the house of Caiaphas, on to Pilate s house and courtyard, and, finally, to the hill of Calvary. During this time, he was spat on and struck, stripped, scourged, and crowned with thorns; he was denounced, mocked, and ridiculed. Most likely some of the same crowd that cried out Hosanna cried out, Crucify him! It ended with his being nailed to a cross, and after three torturous hours, he died. At this journey s end, there was one final cry from a small group, a centurion and the men with him: Truly, this was the Son of God! (Matthew 27:54). Allow some time to relive these two journeys. You might hear some things you haven t noticed before. Perhaps the words of one of the secondary characters or Jesus response to a particular situation or his silence before another will speak to you this time. SEEING CHRIST CLEARLY We start today looking through the portals of Jerusalem, seeing crowds of people, cheering and waving palm branches in the air. The whole atmosphere is one of joy, triumph, and celebration. We can get distracted or enthralled by the scene, and not see clearly the features of Jesus as he enters. But our readings from Isaiah and Paul's letter to the Philippians clarify his features for us. He is the Suffering Servant, meek and mute before his captors and persecutors; he is the very image of the unseen God, yet will not clutch at equality with God before he endures his final confrontation in humility. Isaiah and Paul help us "behold the Lamb of God" before we hear the story of his final and greatest confrontation. It is important that we see Christ clearly before we hear the account of his passion, for we--his Body through baptism, the church--now bear his face. We must, with him, enter into this time of trial so we can, also with him, enter into his final triumph. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Now we have come to the center of the
Christian year, beginning with today, Passion Sunday, Holy Week, and culminating in the Pasch, the Sacred Triduum. Some have called the culminating event in this week's journey of faith "The Three Days of Easter." The origins of many of our observances, including today's blessing of palms and solemn entry into the church, hearken back to old Jerusalem. In the late fourth century, a woman living a consecrated life in southern France made a four-year pilgrimage to Jerusalem. There, she encountered the rich liturgies of the city, bursting with Christians. She was a keen observer, and fortunately for us wrote vivid letters of her experience to a circle of women friends she calls her sisters. By the time of her journey, it is clear that even some catechumens were undertaking the dangerous journey so that they could be formed at the very site of the events of Christ's passion and rising. At the heart of the pilgrim experience were processions, such as today's joyous procession to the Mount of Olives, and brilliant catechesis from the bishop every day, as well as intense fasting and prayer. When you resolve to keep this week holy in your own life, and especially when you commit to participate in the full Triduum with worship in church and fasting at home, a very ancient tradition is within your grasp. THE HOLY TRIDUUM The first day of the Paschal Triduum culminates in the solemn ven-eration of the cross on Good Friday. GOOD FRIDAY: The second day of the Triduum is filled with the silence of the tomb. The solemnity of Good Friday continues througour the day of Holy Saturday. The Church celebrates no eucharistic liturgy durinz the day, but silently prepares for the Easter Vigil celebration in the evening. As Jesus remained in the tomb, so the Church as a whole awaits the coming of the Lord's kingdom. EASTER VIGIL: The third day of the Triduum IS filled with the wonder of the resurrection. The Easter Vigil is the high point of the liturgical year. The drama of the lighting of the new fire, the blessing of the Paschal candle and the Easter proclamation in the candlelit church set the stage for the recounting of the story of salvation in the Scripture readings. "Alleluia" once again greets the Gospel, and following the homily, we celebrate baptism and the renewal of our baptismal promises. The Paschal Triduum officially concludes with evening prayer on Easter Sunday, bur the wonder of the Easter Season extends for a full 50 days. THE JOURNEY OF OUR REDEMPTION The Paschal Triduum (TRID-oo-um), Latin for "three days," commemorates Christ's redemptive journey through death, burial and resurrection to new life. The Church observes the Triduum as a single event made up of three distinct parts. In accordance with the custom in biblical times, each "day" begins in the evening. HOLY THURSDAY: The first day of the Triduum is filled with the action of Christ's self-gift. The Mass of the Lord's Supper on the evening of Holy Thursday commemorates Christ's command that we "love one another." Symbolized in the washing of the feet, the great commission of Christ is made concrete in the eucharist as well as in Jesus' crucifixion on Calvary. WAY OF THE CROSS OVER THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE On Good Friday, April 14, 2017, Communion and Liberation will sponsor the Way of the Cross over the Brooklyn Bridge. Participants will congregate for the first station at St. James Cathedral, Brooklyn, at 10:00 am. After a station on the Brooklyn Bridge, the procession will follow the cross to a third station at City Hall Park in Manhattan, and a fourth station near Ground Zero. The final station will be at St. Peter's Church, on Barclay Street, concluding at 1:30 pm. At eachstation, there will be readings from the Passion,

WIADOMOŚCI PARAFIALNE NIEDZIELA PALMOWA Kwiecień 9, 2017 Cytat dnia: NALEŻYMY DO PANA Kiedy jako dziecko uczestniczyłem w liturgii Niedzieli Palmowej, zadawałem sobie pytanie, po co po raz kolejny musimy słuchać opisu męki Pańskiej. Dobrze go przecież znamy, wiemy, że po modlitwie w Ogrodzie Oliwnym był sąd, a później droga na Golgotę i krzyż. Po co Kościół każdego roku przypomina je dwukrotnie podczas liturgii Wielkiego Tygodnia: w Niedzielę Palmową i w Wielki Piątek? Rozpoczyna się w Kościele czas szczególny, kilka dni nabrzmiałych treścią wyrażoną przez słowa, znaki i symbole. Wszystko po to, abyśmy mogli wejść w tajemnicę Paschy Chrystusa.
Słuchamy Ewangelii o ostatniej ziemskiej drodze Jezusa nie tylko po to, aby się dowiedzieć, jak to było kiedyś, lecz i po to, aby się znaleźć w centrum tego wydarzenia. Liturgia przypomina bramę, przez którą możemy wejść, by stać się już nie widzami, ale uczestnikami Paschy Syna Bożego. Kluczem otwierającym tę bramę jest nasza wiara. Życia Jezusa nie da się rozdzielić od Jego bycia z innymi, z tymi, których sam sobie wybrał, aby Mu towarzyszyli. Im powierzył swoje tajemnice, przede wszystkim zaś tajemnicę swej męki. Jego droga krzyżowa była jedyna i niepowtarzalna. Boleśnie doświadczył tego św. Piotr, kiedy się zaparł Jezusa, choć wcześniej był niemal pewien, że pójdzie za swoim Mistrzem aż do końca. W cieniu Golgoty pewność zamieniła się w lęk, a wiara wielu w trwogę opuszczenia i śmierci. Dopiero po zmartwychwstaniu uczniowie, a z nimi cały Kościół, czyli również my, otrzymujemy możliwość naśladowania Chrystusa przez świadectwo naszego życia i śmierci. I w życiu i w śmierci należymy do Pana (Rz 14, 8). Odtąd stajemy się uczestnikami Jego Paschy chwały zmartwychwstania, którą poprzedza droga uniżenia się i krzyż. Liturgia Niedzieli Palmowej rozpoczyna się od pamiątki triumfalnego wjazdu Jezusa do Jerozolimy. Wiwatujące na Jego cześć tłumy rzucały na drogę płaszcze oraz gałązki, wołając: Hosanna Synowi Dawidowemu!. W specjalnym obrzędzie liturgicznym powtarzamy to, co czynili i mówili uczniowie Jezusa oraz tłumy, które gromadziły się wokół Niego. Chwilę później czytamy ewangeliczny opis męki Pańskiej. Te dwa wydarzenia, choć w formie tak różne od siebie, odnoszą się do jednej tajemnicy uniżenia, a w nim królowania Chrystusa. Streszcza ją św. Paweł w słowach: On, istniejąc w postaci Bożej, nie skorzystał ze sposobności, aby na równi być z Bogiem, lecz ogołocił samego siebie, przyjąwszy postać sługi (Flp 2, 6-7). W ten sposób liturgia Niedzieli Palmowej zawiera już w sobie pełny wymiar męki. Jest to Pascha Jezusa Chrystusa, która staje się jednocześnie naszą drogą.
