From the Pastor s Desk I heard a story about a man in Liverpool. He was a huge fan of the local soccer team. In fact, his life revolved around his team's fortunes. Someone asked him if he considered soccer a matter of life or death. "No," he said indignantly, "Soccer is much more important than that!" But today in the Gospel, we do encounter something more important than life or death, namely, where we will spend eternity: The question of eternal life or eternal death. Jesus invites us to make that choice today. He warns that the gate is narrow, that some who seem to be in first place now, will wind up last. And vica versa. In the words of our second reading, "Strengthen your drooping hs your weak knees." "Do not disdain the discipline of the Lord or lose heart." Reflections from Fr. Emil. THE PASCHAL BANQUET The Mass is at the same time, inseparably, the sacrificial memorial in which the sacrifice of the cross is perpetuated the sacred banquet of communion with the Lord's body blood. But the celebration of the Eucharist sacrifice is wholly directed toward the intimate union of the faithful with Christ through communion. To receive communion is to receive Christ himself who has offered himself for us. The altar, around which the Church is gathered in the celebration of the Eucharist, represents the two aspects of the same mystery; the altar of the sacrifice the table of the Lord. This is all the more so since the Christian altar is the symbol of Christ himself, present in the midst of the assembly of his faithful, both as the victim offered for our reconciliation as food from heaven who is giving himself to us. For what is the altar of Christ if not the image of the Body of Christ.- asks St Ambrose. He says elsewhere. The altar represents the body of Christ the Body of Christ is on the altar. The liturgy expresses this unity of sacrifice communion in many prayers. Thus the Roman Church prays in its anaphora; "We entreat you, almighty God, that by the hs of your holy Angel this offering may be borne to your altar in heaven in the sight of your divine majesty, so that as we receive in communion at this altar the most holy Body Blood of your Son we may be filled with every heavenly blessing grace". Sprawowanie Ofiary eucharystycznej jest nastawione na wewnętrzna zjednoczenie wiernych z Chrystusem przez Komunię. Przystępować do Komunii świętej oznacza przyjmować samego Chrystusa, który ofiarował się za nas. Ołtarz, wokół którego Kościół gromadzi się podczas sprawowania Eucharystii, reprezentuje dwa aspekty tego samego misterium, którymi są ołtarz ofiary i stół Pana. Co więcej, ołtarz chrześcijański jest symbolem samego Chrystusa, obecnego w zgromadzeniu swoich wiernych, równocześnie jako ofiara złożona dla naszego pojednania i jako niebieski pokarm, który nam się udziela. Czym jest bowiem ołtarz Chrystusa, jeśli nie wyobrażeniem Jego Ciała - mówi św Ambroży, a w innym miejscu; "OŁtarz jest symbolem Ciała Chrystusa, na ołtarzu zaś spoczywa Ciało Chrystusa". Liturgia wyraża tę jedność ofiary i komunii w wielu modlitwach. Kościół Rzymski modli się w Modlitwie eucharystycznej w taki sposób; "Pokornie Cię błagamy, wszechmogący Boże, niech Twój święty Anioł zaniesie tę ofiarę na ołtarz w niebie, przed oblicze Boskiego majestatu Twego, abysmy przyjmując z tego ołtarza Najświętsze Ciało i Krew Twojego Syna, otrzymali obfite błogosławieństwo i łaskę".
