PASTORAL MESSAGE JUNE 11 CZERWCA 2006 DON T COME TO CHURCH THIS SUMMER! Look, let s be honest about it during summer vacation, the last thing anyone wants to do is go to church on Sunday. The church is hot and that puts people into a surly mood. We never know what to wear. Are cut-offs and T-shirts OK in church? Even the priest wears sandals The choir is smaller, the servers are irregular, even the lectors sound a little put out from the heat and humidity. The homilies are way too long don t those priests know we have things to do and places to go? The kids have all kinds of sports to play, and after all, this is the number one priority. The beach beckons, and maybe Sunday morning is better for fishing than any other day. Saturday night can be a lot of fun during the summer, and who wants to wake up early Sunday after dragging into the house in the wee hours? When school is out, it just seems natural that everything else is on hold, too. So what if we just cancel church for the summer? Stay home. Don t bother. Go somewhere else. Give us all a break. We can save some money by shutting the place down for a few months and Lord knows, the summer collection sure dips enough to make a shut-down sound attractive! We ll just show up for the weddings already scheduled (and maybe not book any for next summer, just in case) and funerals, but only if the family insists. The hospitals have their own chaplains, so don t call us. Parish organizations can meet in private homes. Skip the bulletin, because there won t be anything to report anyway. SOUND CRAZY? Of course it does. Nobody would seriously ever consider such an inane idea as to shut down a parish church for the summer. But why is it crazy to think of the church being closed to the people for the summer, but it s accepted as normal for the people to be closed to the church during the summer? We are still here. God is still here God, who is worthy of our praise Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall. The priests and staff at your parish do not stop serving the people. We are fullservice all year long. Certainly people s schedules get busier during the summer. Frankly, we also enjoy an occasional day at the beach or night at the movies. But as grateful as we are for those who continue to come to Mass so faithfully, it is a bit disheartening when we look out at the congregation and see the extra empty spaces. And, too, the parish checkbook suffers, even though our bills stay constant. This is not why our ancestors fought for independence so long ago, and why so many have died to defend our freedoms since then. Freedom is not only freedom from, it is also freedom for for the praise and worship of our God who loves us and is faithful to us, even in spite of our unfaithfulness. If you know someone who needs a gentle reminder about their summer obligation, take some extra bulletins and pass them on. And have a great Summer! Fr. Michael (First printed 7/8/01, repeated by popular demand.) Chwala Ojcu i Synowi i Duchowi Swietemu! To wlasciwie bazylika papieska. Otóz Goessweinstein to miejsce pielgrzymkowe. To lokalne sanktuarium Trójcy Swietej, do którego pielgrzymuja wierzacy w okregu okolo 100 km. Pielgrzymowanie do Trójcy Przenajswietszej! Amen. o. Placyd

ST. STANISLAUS ALUMNI REUNION FOLLOW-UP This past Sunday s successful Alumni Reunion began with a beautiful Mass followed by a picnic in the Social Center. As one alumni stated: The celebration of the Mass brought tears to my eyes. The silk banners, the music, the flowers, the sermon, and all the other special touches of our parishioners made the alumni feel very we l- come at our Shrine Church. Although it rained that afternoon, the spirit of the alums never dampened. Afterwards in the Social Center, box lunches, pizza, 50/50 raffles, instant bingos, fun, laughter, and much conversation permeated the event that was attended by 150 former graduates from both our grade school and high school. Our parish has such a rich history as our alums lovingly shared their stories. One alum met another classmate she hadn t seen since she graduated from St. Stan s Grade School. When they met, she said: So, Ralph, what have you been doing for the last 62 years? Thank you to all who made this event special. LOLLY THE TROLLY AND CORPUS CHRISTI Lolly the Trolly will be available for anyone unable to walk the entire route of our annual Corpus Christi Procession on June 18th, but we ask that you reserve your seat in advance by calling Chris Luboski at (216) 407-1144 as soon as possible, as seating is limited to 38 people. A name tag will be mailed to you for you to wear as you board the trolley, which will arrive in front of the church at 11:00 AM. The procession should begin around 11:30 AM. If you are attending the 10:30 AM Mass that day, please make your way to the trolley immediately after the Mass. If you are attending the procession only, you may board the trolley after it arrives at 11:00 AM. CLEVELAND, OHIO ST. STANISLAUS SHRINE SHOPPE The Shrine Shop is open: Saturday 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM Sunday 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM Before or after Mass Come in and Browse CDs, Tapes, Religious Items, Books, Pictures and much much more! WITH THE SILENT CARNIVAL Our Silent Carnival is in full swing! Congratulations to Daniel & Michelle Smego of Parma, and the winners of the fifth week of the parish 2006 Silent Carnival. You can be a winner too! The Grand Prize winner will be selected on Monday after Father s Day, so make sure to mail or drop your entries in the collection basket. There are only TWO more weeks left!!! 2007 MASS BOOK IS OPEN Those who wish to reserve Masses for wedding anniversaries and anniversaries of deaths in 2007 can do so at this time. Mass intentions for 2007 will be accepted in person at the rectory, from 9:30 AM until 4:30 PM, on Thursdays and Fridays only. You may also mail your Mass intentions or drop them into the collection basket along with the customary stipend and your requested dates. Please do not phone as we cannot accept phone reservations. There are still open dates in the later months of 2006. Sto lat! 1906-2006 Franciscans at Saint Stanislaus VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ST. STAN S HISTORICAL FACT An article from the student newspaper of St. Stanislaus High School, The Spire, in June of 1947 tells us of the events of the first ever Commencement for St. Stan s High. The first Senior Class was made up of twelve students. The graduating class attended 8 AM Mass on Sunday as a group. A Communion Breakfast was served in the High School. The Pastor, Reverend Vitalis Bartkowiak OFM, presented the twelve graduates with their diplomas at the Commencement which took place at 3 PM in the church. The first graduates were Florence Durdella, Bernice Matuszewski, Michaleen Krajewski, Rosemarie Owsiany, Edward J. Pannent, Joseph Skingel, Richard Wisniewski, Robert Lange, Raymond Gajewski, Raymond Krolikowski, Edward Zeszut, and Donald Lubecki. Underclassmen paid tribute to the outgoing Seniors on May 26 of that year at an entertainment assembly. The Freshman did a presentation of Gilbert & Sullivan s, H.M.S. Pinafore. Oddly enough the very last dramatic production staged at St. Stan s High in the last year of its existence in 1969 was the same, H.M.S. Pinafore.

COMMUNITY NEWS JUNE 11 CZERWCA 2006 PILGRIMAGE TO THE SACRED PLACES OF THE CITY OF STANISLAUS AND JOHN PAUL II Join Fr. Mike Surufka and David Krakowski on a pilgrimage to Krakow to visit sacred places of the city of Stanislaus and John Paul II. Also during the trip, the group will accept the new icon which will be installed at our Shrine Church in Cleveland. The unusually heavy storm and winds of May 31, damaged the copper sheeting of the cupola on our church. In order to prevent any further damage we contracted the repair work for the following Friday. The contractor provided a 200 foot crane to do the job. The total cost of the job was $9,000.00, and all but $1,000.00 (our deductible) was covered by our insurance. THE CLOISTERS CELEBRATES COMPLETION OF PHASE 1 Last Friday the Pulaski Franciscan Development Corporation celebrated the completion and sell out of the first phase of The Cloisters Townhouse project and the groundbreaking and start of construction for the second phase.
