Monthly Memorial Masses Our Parish has a monthly Memorial Mass on the first Saturday of every month. Those enrolled are prayed for once a month for one year. THE POPE S PRAYER INTENTION FOR JANUARY 2017 That all Christians may be faithful to the Lord s teaching by striving with prayer and fraternal charity to restore ecclesial communion and by collaborating to meet the challenges facing humanity. Support Group for Grieving Parents The needs of parents who have suffered the loss of a son or daughter are unique. The Office of Family Life Ministries of the Archdiocese of Newark sponsors support groups for Parents Grieving the Death of a Child. The groups are led by trained facilitators - parents who have personally experienced the death of a child. Groups meet at St. Thomas the Apostle Church Parish Center, 60 Byrd Avenue, Bloomfield, NJ, on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 pm (July and August is 7:00 pm) and at St. Peter the Apostle Church, Rectory Basement, 445 Fifth Avenue, River Edge, NJ, on the third Monday of each month at 7:30 pm. Saint John Paul II Society recently awarded scholarships to the following high school students from our parish. I was hoping we could include an announcement in the parish bulletin. We awarded scholarships to Joseph and Francis Vuolo, Tate Fryczynski, Kayla O'Connor, and Jared Radil. It is our mission to support youth within our parish community and we thank the families for believing that a catholic education is an important partof their children's lives. Debra Czerwienski January 9th the Baptism of Our Lord. This brings to an end the season of Christmas. The Church recalls Our Lord's second manifestation or epiphany which occurred on the occasion of His baptism in the Jordan. Jesus descended into the River to sanctify its waters and to give them the power to beget sons of God. The event takes on the importance of a second creation in which the entire Trinity intervenes. In the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany because at the baptism of Christ in the River Jordan God appeared in three persons. The baptism of John was a sort of sacramental preparatory for the Baptism of Christ. It moved men to sentiments of repentance and induced them to confess their sins. Christ did not need the baptism of John. Although He appeared in the "substance of our flesh" and was recognized "outwardly like unto ourselves," He was absolutely sinless and impeccable. He conferred upon the water the power of the true Baptism which would remove all the sins of the world: "Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him Who takes away the sin of the world." Many of the incidents which accompanied Christ's baptism are symbolical of what happened at our Baptism. At Christ's baptism the Holy Spirit descended upon Him; at our Baptism the Trinity took its abode in our soul. At His baptism Christ was proclaimed the "Beloved Son" of the Father; at our Baptism we become the adopted sons of God. At Christ's baptism the heavens were opened; at our Baptism heaven was opened to us. At His baptism Jesus prayed; after our Baptism we must pray to avoid actual sin. Dear Members of Saint John Paul II Parish! We would like to extend our great appreciation for the opportunity to experience World Youth Day in Krakow, Poland this past July. As young adults, we believe that our journey on this pilgrimage was truly a gift, and we thank you so much for supporting us and praying for us. While abroad in Poland, we toured many sites such as the Pauline Monastery in Częstochowa, the Underground Salt Cathedral where religious figures and artwork are carved completely from salt, the Nazi Concentration Camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau, and the Saint Faustina Shrine of Divine Mercy in Lagiewniki. We also attended three lively and fun Catechesis Sessions with thousands of other devoted young Catholics, where we listened as speakers discuss their faith experiences, and shared with us what they learned from the Holy Father. Some of the highlights of our journey included walking through the streets of Krakow alongside millions of other young Catholics from hundreds of countries, chanting and walking to the field in the center of the city where we partook in prayer services, masses, and the Stations of the Cross with Pope Francis himself. Seeing Pope Francis in person was spiritually amazing, and being surrounded by fellow devout Catholics made the experience that much more extraordinary. Toward the end of our trip, we embarked on a two-day campout where millions of us gathered together from all over the world to share in our Catholic faith in preparation for a mass with the Holy Father. In the field we engaged in Eucharistic Adoration, evening Vigil, and a night under the stars with a beautiful candlelight services with passionate teenagers and young adults singing and rejoicing. The campout was definitely one of the best parts of World Youth Day. As the trip came to an end, we realized how much the journey had impacted us. We met and bonded with so many incredible people who made the trip most memorable and the activities we did will live with us forever. We would like to thank the Archdiocese of Newark and Regina Tours for coordinating our trip, as well as Father Paul Dolinski and Matthew Strzala for leading us on this journey. We are especially grateful to the parish organizations and those parishioners who over the past three years donated to our Krakow adventure and prayed for us. After experiencing this remarkably lifechanging pilgrimage, we look forward to your continued support as we set our sights on the next World Youth Day which will take place during the summer of 2019 in Panama City, Panama. Uroczystość Objawienia Pańskiego zwana w polskiej tradycji ludowej świętem Trzech Króli, jest najstarszym - obok Wielkanocy świętem kościelnym. Objawienie - uczy nas Katechizm Kościoła Katolickiego - jest ukazaniem się Jezusa jako Mesjasza Izraela, Syna Bożego i Zbawiciela świata (KKK 528). Podczas gdy Boże Narodzenie koncentruje się bardziej na uniżeniu Syna Bożego, podkreślając ubóstwo i prostotę ziemskich narodzin Chrystusa, Objawienie Pańskie kieruje wzrok wierzących na Boską wielkość nowonarodzonego Dziecięcia. Bóstwo Chrystusa uznali Mędrcy ze Wschodu, padając przed Nim na twarz, oddając Mu pokłon i ofiarując dary. W mędrcach - reprezentantach wyznawców sąsiednich religii pogańskich - Ewangelia widzi pierwociny narodów, które przyjmą Dobrą Nowinę zbawienia (KKK 528). Jako uroczystość kościelna, Objawienie Pańskie wywodzi się z chrześcijańskiego Wschodu i sięga początków III w. Od tego momentu 6 stycznia (czasami to święto przenosi się na niedzielę) stał się świętowaniem - ściśle powiązanych z narodzeniem Chrystusa - innych ważnych momentów Jego ziemskiego życia, w których zostało objawione Jego Bóstwo. Tymi wydarzeniami są: pokłon Mędrców, chrzest w Jordanie i cud w Kanie Galilejskiej. W niektórych Kościołach lokalnych dołączano do nich również cudowne rozmnożenie chleba i przemienienie Chrystusa na górze Tabor. Chociaż uroczystość Objawienia Pańskiego powszechnie jest u nas zwana świętem Trzech Króli, jednak Ewangelie nie nazywają Mędrców królami, ani też nie podają ich liczby. Ich imiona - Kacper, Melchior, Baltazar - pojawiły się w średniowieczu. Z przełomu XV i XVI w. pochodzi obrzęd poświęcania złota, kadzidła i mirry. W nowszych czasach doszedł do niego zwyczaj poświęcania kredy, którą wypisuje się na drzwiach mieszkań inicjały imion Trzech Króli i rok bieżący. Przyniesione Chrystusowi złoto symbolizuje Jego godność królewską, ofiarowane kadzidło - to uznanie Jego prawdziwej Boskości, a mirra - to symbol rzeczywistego człowieczeństwa Pana Jezusa. Wydarzenia zbawcze, poprzez które Jezus objawił się światu, stanowiły początek wezwania do wiary wszystkich narodów i każdego człowieka stworzonego na obraz i podobieństwo Boże, i odkupionego krwią Chrystusa. Każdy z nas, tak jak niegdyś Mędrcy ze Wschodu, powinien pozwolić prowadzić się wierze i powinien dar wiary nieść innym, ukazując w ten sposób nieskończoną miłość Boga ku każdemu człowiekowi. Ze świętem Objawienia Pańskiego wiąże się zwyczaj zapisywania poświęconą kredą na drzwiach naszych domów lub mieszkań trzech liter: C+M+B, co oznacza Christus Mansionem Benedicat czyli Niech Chrystus błogosławi to domostwo. ŚWIĘTO CHRZTU PAŃSKIEGO (PONIEDZIAŁEK PO UROCZYSTOŚCI OBJAWIENIA PAŃSKIEGO) Najstarszej tradycji tego święta należy szukać w liturgii Kościoła wschodniego, ponieważ chrzest Jezusa nie posiadał w liturgii rzymskiej oddzielnego święta. Teksty modlitw związane ze świętem Chrztu Pańskiego odzwierciedlają bardzo dokładnie i szczegółowo przekazy ewangelijne. Podkreślają przy tym związek tego święta z uroczystością Objawienia Pańskiego. Chrystus już jako dorosły, 30-letni mężczyzna, przychodzi nad brzeg Jordanu, by z rąk Jana Chrzciciela, swojego Poprzednika, przyjąć chrzest. Chociaż sam nie miał grzechu, nie odsunął się od grzesznych ludzi: wraz z nimi wstąpił w wody Jordanu, by dostąpić oczyszczenia. W ten sposób uświęcił wodę. W dniu swojego chrztu Jezus został przedstawiony przez swojego Ojca jako Syn posłany dla dokonania dzieła zbawienia. Misję Chrystusa potwierdza swym świadectwem Bóg. Zamknięte przez grzech Adama niebiosa otwierają się, na Jezusa zstępuje Duch Święty. Z nieba daje się słyszeć głos: Tyś jest mój Syn umiłowany, w Tobie mam upodobanie. Od uroczystego aktu chrztu Chrystus rozpoczął swoją misję nauczycielską. Jezus miał wtedy trzydzieści lat, gdyż dopiero od tego wieku zwyczaj żydowski pozwalał występować publicznie przed ludem i nauczać. Uważano, że od trzydziestu lat rozpoczyna się pełnia dojrzałości męskiej. W tym wydarzeniu mamy też pierwsze w historii świata pojawienie się w postaci widzialnej całej Trójcy Świętej: Bóg Ojciec przemawia, Syn Boży jest w postaci ludzkiej, a Duch Święty pojawia się nad Nim w postaci gołębicy.
