To those who see with eyes of faith, the Lord is ever near, reflected in the faces of all the poor and lowly of the world. Refrain 4. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, [All bow, at the following text ] and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. 3

Liturgical Musings Eucharistic Adoration When you think about Eucharistic Adoration, a very special day in the liturgical year should come to mind. This special day is Holy Thursday. At the conclusion of the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday, many churches sing Pange Lingua and Tantum Ergo as part of the Eucharistic Procession. At the conclusion of the Mass, churches stay open for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. At this time people come to church to pray and adore the Blessed Sacrament. This is a beautiful time to be with our Lord. Did you know that we offer this opportunity every week. On Wednesdays at 1 PM, the church is open for the Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, concluding with Benediction at 3 PM. At this time, people come together to pray and ponder upon sacred mysteries of our faith. We encourage you to be a part of this beautiful liturgy offered every Wednesday from 1 PM-3 PM. Ordinary Time Why do we observe this liturgical season? Ordinary time is the liturgical season that divides the Sundays between Pentecost and Advent and those between the Baptism of Jesus and Lent. You will notice that priests and deacons wear the color green. This liturgical color is a symbol for the growth of our faith and hope as we learn about Jesus being fully human and fully divine as the Son of God. We have recently heard about the miracle of the loaves and the fish. At the consecration, we experience the greatest miracle of all. Mere bread and wine lose their ordinary form and become the Body and Blood of Christ. Have you thought lately about the miracles that can happen in our own lives? When we can develop a connection between the Mass and our day-to-day lives, the Holy Spirit can work miracles. Through our joys and struggles, God is with us. This month we will be learning the hymn, This is Jesus. This hymn beautifully expresses our belief in the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist. (The hymn is on page 4) A Prayer Before Mass Loving Father, as on my earthly pilgrimage I come to receive Your beloved Son under the veil of a sacrament, may I one day see Him face to face in glory, who lives and reigns with You for ever and ever. Amen. A Prayer After Receiving Holy Communion Anima Christi Soul of Christ, be my sanctification; Body of Christ, be my salvation; Blood of Christ, fill all my veins; Water of Christ's side, wash out my stains; Passion of Christ, my comfort be; O good Jesus, listen to me; In Thy wounds I fain would hide; Ne'er to be parted from Thy side; Guard me, should the foe assail me; Call me when my life shall fail me; Bid me come to Thee above, With Thy saints to sing Thy love, World without end. Amen. A Spiritual Communion Prayer for those unable to receive the Eucharist My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. 6

Our Faith AT THE TABLE In today s first reading, Wisdom is imagined as a woman rich in poise and grace. She moves smoothly and confidently about her temple like home. She doesn t flutter about, nervous with worry. Wisdom sends her maidens to invite all to her open house. The guests do not possess any particular genius or insight. They need only be a people of good will and common sense. They are summoned to leave behind foolishness and to find for themselves a place at Wisdom s table. There they may and can eat and drink deeply. Today s Gospel draws us back to the table of the Eucharist. Jesus addresses those who seek to understand his words and, sadly, those who seek to avoid them. As people born of God, we are called and equipped to seek God s will and act on it. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. TODAY S READINGS First Reading Forsake foolishness that you may live; advance in the way of understanding (Proverbs 9:1-6). Psalm Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). On August 21st at 2:00pm they will appear before the Zoning Board of Appeals requesting a special use permit to build this facility. What can a responsible citizen do? 1. Become informed on the pro s and con s of the use of marijuana as medical treatment and weigh the potential risks, dangers and/or benefits this facility brings to the neighborhood. Ask for forthrightness in where the facility will be located. Ask good questions; i.e., What is the Union Group s position on the debate over legalizing marijuana? How will patients who have access to the drug be accountable in just using it for themselves; and not selling or sharing it? Research the assessments of medical professionals. Seek truth! 2. Make your views known. Go to Alderman Napolitano s office, bring your ID and sign a petition which allows you to check yes, I support or no I am not in favor of this facility. His office is located at 7442 N. Harlem Ave. Mon. 9-8 and Tues.-Fri. 9-5. If you are unable to visit his office call 773-631- 2241 and he will send a representative to your house. Conferral of the Pallium for Archbishop Cupich, Chicago Sunday, August 23, 2015 When an Archbishop is appointed to a new archdiocese, he requests the Pallium from the Holy See. The Pallium is a scarf, or stole-like vestment that is worn over the chasuble when the Archbishop celebrates Mass. It is about two-inches wide, and it rests on the shoulders, with a pendant or lappet in the front and the back which hang about 12 inches. When viewed from the front or the back, the Pallium resembles the letter Y. The Pallium is white, with six black crosses. Three of those crosses, the ones on the front, back and left shoulder, are ornamented with a gold pin, symbolizing the three nails of Christ s crucifixion. Some of the white wool of the Pallium comes from two lambs that are blessed each year by the Pope on January 21, the feast of St. Agnes. In addition, each of the pendants which hang in front and back are tipped with black satin, resembling the hoof of a lamb; thus the imagery being that of the Archbishop, the chief shepherd of the diocese, carrying a lamb on his shoulders, in imitation of Christ the Good Shepherd. Originally, the Pallium was worn only by the Pope but now it is given, by him, to metropolitan Archbishops as a sign of their unity with the Pope. Every diocese is part of a collection of dioceses called a Province. In the United States, the Provinces most often, but not always, are designated by state lines. The five dioceses of Illinois, Belleville, Joliet, Peoria, Rockford and Springfield in Illinois, are a Province. Each Province has an Archdiocese, which is called the Metropolitan See. Thus the Archbishop of that diocese is the Metropolitan Archbishop, and he presides over, although has no jurisdiction over, the dioceses of that Province. Archbishop Cupich, then, is the Metropolitan Archbishop of the Province of Chicago. The conferral of the Pallium on a new Archbishop is actually part of the Rite of Installation of a Bishop in his Cathedral Church. That is, when a new Archbishop is received in his Cathedral and he takes possession of the Archdiocese, the Nuncio, who is the Pope s delegate in the United States, would confer the Pallium as part of the Rite. However, some 32 years ago, Saint John Paul II took the investiture of the Pallium out of the Rite of Installation, and instead called new Archbishops to Rome where he invested them himself on June 29, the Solemnity of Ss. Peter and Paul. Pope Francis, in January of this year, decided that new Archbishops will once again receive the Pallium in their own Cathedrals, in the midst of their own people. Presumably, then, the conferral of the Pallium will again be part of the Rite of Installation of a Bishop in his Cathedral Church. Since Archbishop Cupich has already been installed on November 18, 2014, he will receive the Pallium from the Nuncio at a Mass at Holy Name Cathedral on August 23, 2015. This Mass will not only be a great Archdiocesan celebration for Chicago, but it will also be a Provincial celebration, with the bishops of the other dioceses of Illinois present and concelebrating with Archbishop Cupich. In the opening rites of that Mass, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the Papal Nuncio, will invest Archbishop Cupich with the Pallium, a sign of his unity with Pope Francis, and a symbol of his office as Metropolitan Archbishop. W momencie, gdy nowy Arcybiskup jest minowany do objęcia archidiecezji, występuje on z prośbą do Stolicy Apostolskiej o przyznanie mu Paliusza. W skład Prowincji Chicago wchodzą nastęujące diecezje: Belleville, Joliet, Peoria, Rockford i Springfield. Każda prowicja posiada Archdiecezję zwaną Metropolią. Stąd Arcybiskup takiej diecezji jest Arcybiskupem Metropolitą i przewodniczy on diecezjom wchodzącym w skład danej prowincji, choć nie posiada on jurysdykcji w tychże diecezjach. Jan Paweł II, wyłączył nałożenie Paliusza z Rytu Instalacji i przyjmując osobiście arcybiskupów w Rzymie, sam dokonywał nałożenia Paliusza 29 czerwca w Uroczystość św. Piotra i Pawła. 10

XX Niedziela Zwykła Zadania chrześcijanina: modlitwa i miłość. Modlitwa rozszerza nasze ciasne serca i czyni je zdolnymi do miłowania Boga i bliźniego. Odrzućcie głupotę i żyjcie, chodźcie drogą rozwagi. Ta obecność w nas, stanowi podstawę i cel prawdziwego nabożeństwa do Matki Boskiej. Katechetka Anna. Og³oszenia Polska Szko³a im. Gen W³adys³awa Andersa przy parafii ªw.
