Preface Six years ago I arrived at Groningen almost by accident, an inexperienced traveller, lost on the Dutch rail network making a wild detour through Leeuwarden. It was my first trip abroad, and everything was new and surprising. I was an undergraduate student and only planned to stay here for a few months to do part of my master s degree. Eventually professor Konings offered me a PhD place so I ended up enjoying Groningen just a little bit longer than I had planned. Thank you Wil for giving me the opportunity to join the research team in Haren s Molecular Microbiology Group. Thank you also for your patience, criticism and encouragement. I am also grateful to professor Driessen, for his role in supervising my research; the extensive review meetings, stimulating discussions and constant support. My special thanks go to Gerrit for his deep involvement throughout my project, our frequent discussions, his ongoing support, and the way he showed me how to focus on the most important issues. I would like to thank all my colleagues from the Multi Drug Resistance section, and the whole department for their help, as well as creating a great working environment for me. The help of Marjon, Eli and Jacek with preparations for the viva proved to be priceless; thank you guys very much. I want to acknowledge the Groningen Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology Institute for funding the project. Without their support through the Ubbo-Emmius fellowship this project would not have been possible. And finally thank you, to all the Dutch people, for speaking English. Thank you, my friends, for being.
Przyjąłem tę propozycję i zostałem trochę dłużej.
