Therefore, it was necessary to include to the prsent volume the amended bibliography supplemented with the latest data from 2012 (Szkice z dziejów polskiej orientalistyki[essays on the history of Oriental studies in Poland], Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, Warsaw 2012). In this part of the article there is also provided information about Professor s teaching activities, participation in congresses and conferences, lectures delivered by him abroad and his work activities in the National Museum in Warsaw. Professor Tadeusz Majda was born in 1930 in Skolimów near Warsaw (present day Konstancin-Jeziorna) into a family of school teachers. After World War II he was enrolled in a high school in Słupsk. Having passed his A-level exam, at the suggestion of his teachers he decided to pursue Oriental studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies at the University of Warsaw, which in 1951 announced the launch of regular full-time studies in nine fields. After Wydawnictwo passing the entrance Dialog exam (c) Copyright and a successful wersja elektroniczna interview, Tadeusz Majda started Turkish studies under the supervision of Professors Ananiasz Zajączkowski, Jan Reychman and Józef Bielawski. The chosen course of studies included learning three languages of the Middle East: Turkish, Arabic and Persian as well as the literature and history of Turkey, Arab countries and Iran. Interests of his lecturers, and his master s Professor Ananiasz Zajączkowski in particular, strongly influenced Professor Tadeusz Majda s scholarly pursuits, which were mainly concentrated on the Ottoman studies and the languages of the Kipchak group. His interest in Turkish art and, furthermore, in Islamic art came in the 1970s, during the preparation of the catalogue of Persian and Turkish manuscripts. This interest was consequently increased when Professor Tadeusz Majda worked with MA Alina Mrozowska on the album of miniatures of Turkish costumes and genre scenes. This album was kept in the University of Warsaw Library and originated from the royal library of the Polish king Stanisław August Poniatowski.
Professor Tadeusz Majda s Master s thesis focused on the language of the collection of poems by Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent who used an artistic name Muhibbi [Lover]. The collection was based on an early copy of a manuscript from the University of Warsaw Library. Professor s PhD thesis The topic of Yusuf ile Züleyha in Turkish literature until the fifteenth century(in Polish) was dedicated to one of the most widespread in the Middle East and Central Asia literary plots rooted in the Koran and commentaries to the Koran. Tadeusz Majda s habilitation dissertation The development of Turkish language in the seventeenth century (in Polish) is a study of the seventeenth century Ottoman language in Spanish language, carried out on the basis of the manuscript from the collection of the Wroclaw University Library. Professor Tadeusz Majda served in various roles at the University of Warsaw. For many years he was Head of Turkology, Director of the Oriental Institute (1981-1984), (now Faculty of Oriental Studies) and Dean of the Faculty of Modern Languages (1985-1986). Wydawnictwo Dialog (c) Copyright wersja elektroniczna 1998 Professor degree. 2004 Doctor honoris causa of the University of Ankara. 1 Although it has been almost 60 years, since Professor Tadeusz Majda received his Master s degree, his work and interest in the research on Turkish language, literature, culture and art, as well as Islamic art in general, have been flourishing and result every year in new articles, books, exhibitions and research projects. A wide range of Professor s interests is illustrated by his work and activities, showing him as a scholar (e.g. through his work carried out on the Ottoman and Turkish texts, publications, reviews, participation in academic symposia and organization of conferences), lecturer (delivering lectures, publishing academic handbooks and anthologies, as well as supervision of Master s and PhD theses), and curator of the National Museum in Warsaw (preparing exhibitions, working on the catalogues and articles about art).
