HOSPITAL VISITS If you or a loved one are in the hospital and would like a visit from our ministers, deacons or priests, you must call the rectory and request a visit. The privacy law states that the hospital cannot provide a list when we come o visit our parishioners. And even if they do, patients that come to the hospital through the Emergency Room never get their parish listed it s not one of the emergency questions. Even though hospital personnel can call the parish at the patient s request, it is best for the patient or a family member to call the rectory.

February 24, 2013 2nd Sunday of Lent Page Three Remember in Prayer As members of the parish faith community, it is our responsibility to remember both in concrete and spiritual ways those who cannot celebrate with us each week because they are ill. Those who are sick in turn, remember all of us daily in their prayers and in their sufferings. We experience many blessings because of their remembering us. FERDINAND PARISH IN YOUR WILL I am the Lord who brought you from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land as a possession. (Genesis 15:7) Just as the Lord gave Abraham, Moses and the Israelites a land to possess, He has also given each of us a home. Whether our home is grand or humble, it is a gift from God. Abraham prepared a great sacrifice to the Lord in gratitude for the home God gave him. How do we show our gratitude to God for the home He has given us? Do we make a sacrifice of any kind? Do we return any of our finances to God, investing equally in our eternal home just as we invest in our current abode? Thank you! The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention. ~ Oscar Wilde It remains our sincere hope that through word and deed, education and example, we young and old one heritage or another, would all come to know that our care for Our Church. February 24, 2013 2nd Sunday of Lent Page Four Master, it is good that we are here; let us make three tents, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah. (Lk 9:33) L ast year I was blessed to attend a retreat that focused entirely on Jesus presence in the Eucharist. The highlight, for me, was taking a 3 4 a.m. perpetual adoration timeslot. Like Peter, James, and John, I was overcome by sleep, before really feeling my soul settle into being in the complete presence of God. That deeply quiet hour with Jesus was one of the moments I ve felt closest to him; not for what I prayed (because it was mainly, Lord, don t let me fall asleep on you, ) but for knowing I was enveloped in his presence. Tied to that memory is also the feeling of sadness I had when I returned to school at the end of the retreat. For a while, everything paled in comparison to the beauty, meaning, and peace I felt that weekend I spent with God. This experience, I think, might have been similar to what the disciples felt while descending the mountain with Jesus after watching his transfiguration. Imagine it: Your best friend and Savior leads you up a mountain to spend time praying with you and to reveal to you that he is your God and then tells you that you need to leave and return to your life. How can you go back to normal? How does anything hold any meaning anymore? I think many of us can relate to this situation. We all have moments or days when we feel close to God and because of that, everything in life is good. In these moments when we are close to our Father, he often reveals things to us about himself, ourselves, his love for us, and our lives. We d love to spend eternity in that moment or day, but of course we know that we don t get to stay on that mountaintop with him forever while we re here on earth. If we can trust that we are meant to share our mountaintop experiences by descending and sharing them with our brothers and sisters, then I think we can find that whether we re on a peak or in a valley, it is good that we are there. Page Five 2nd Sunday of Lent February 24, 2013 From the Pastor s desk Dear parishioners, The major work to renovate our McManus Hall has been completed. Many of you had a chance to see the newly renovated place. It now looks beautiful and we can enjoy it for many years to come. It was only possible because of the tireless work of many volunteers, especially from the Polish Saturday School, which donated many days and countless hours so that the final effect is as stunning. During the renovation the new air conditioning system was installed and the heating, electric, and fire protection systems were redone. The floor, ceiling, lights and walls are all new. The hall was painted entirely and finished in wood and stone. The entire kitchen and bar area were renovated and new, necessary equipment purchased for both. I would like now to express my sincere words of gratitude and thanks to all the companies working on this major renovation. Every one of them made a donation to our parish. Some of them were just paid for the material; the labor was donated to our parish: MAA Remodeling Inc. Mariusz 847 636 4630; Audio Video Equipment Paweł 773 837 5695; LBC Construction Lucjan 773 802 5205; KM Building Enterprises Inc. Casey 773 818 1963; Eltronix Services Inc. Bogdan 708 227 7700; ROHRV Inc. Mirek 773 968 9091; First Star HVAC Inc. Joseph 708 710 8315; Unique Plumbing & Heating Wojtek 773 551 8024. Once again, please accept my sincere gratitude. I encourage every one of you to please use them for your work and recommend them to your family and friends, because all of them supported our parish in many different ways. In addition to the above mentioned companies, a list of our own parishioners dedicated their time and talents to this major undertaking: Bogusia & Alek Łakomy, Wladzia & Kuba Mitoraj, Ela & Ryszard Kata, Beata & Paweł Andreasik, Marta & Mariusz Robak, Ola & Piotr Bąk, Ania & Bogdan Podraza, Gosia Chrząszcz, Kasia Nowak, Norbert Garczyński, Adam Strzepka, Jola & Adam Ochał, Bożena & Lucjan Pilichiewicz, Renata & Robert Janusz, Danusia Burzawa, Jan Walasik. All of them did not accept a dime for their long hours, but were happy they were able to do something for our community. The list is even longer and I m not able to mention them all, but let our Lord and his blessings shower upon you for good that you do! Sincere thank you to all parish groups and organizations for donating funds to renovate the hall and to purchase kitchen and audio video equipment. Thank you for the latest donations: the Polish Catholic School Parents Association for their gift of $5,000 from their Valentine Dinner Dance and the anonymous donor from Notre Dame High School and St. Ferdinand School for the donation of $4,600 towards purchasing the new audio video equipment (the new camera, projector, a new screen, and new stage lights). I encourage all groups that are active in our parish and are utilizing the hall for various activities to support this project. There are still outstanding invoices especially for the building materials that have to be paid in the next couple of months. I turn to you now to humbly ask for additional contributions to the second collection next week for the Building and Maintenance Fund. In this way every one of us could share in the hall renovation project. If every family gives even the smallest additional amount during Lent, the time of almsgiving and fasting, just imagine the difference it will make in the overall amount collected. We would then be able to pay off all expenses associated with the renovation. Once again, I thank you for your help and support during the time of renovation and I trust that deeply you recognize the reason that I ask for this additional support from you. I try not to do that too often because I clearly know that you are already very giving and generous parishioners, responsible for the wellbeing of this community of faith. My top priority is care and concern for your spiritual wellbeing and development of it through prayers and active relationship with your Church leading myself and you closer to God. I try to do everything we can, so you can experience the real presence of God when coming to our church, actively participating in the Liturgies, seeking sacraments and praying together. God bless you and I wish you the deep spiritual experiences during this time of Lent, Fr. Jason Torba Pastor

Następujące firmy włożyły swój wkład w remont: M AA Remodeling Inc. Mariusz 847 636 4630; Urządzenia Audiowizualne Paweł 773 837 5695; LBC Construction Lucjan 773 802 5205; KM Building Enterprises Inc. Kazik 773 818 1963; Eltronix Services Inc. Bogdan 708 227 7700; ROHRV Inc. Mirek 773 968 9091; First Star HVAC Inc. Józek 708 710 8315; Unique Plumbing & Heating Wojtek 773 551 8024. Ks. Zdzisław Torba Proboszcz

February 24, 2013 2nd Sunday of Lent Page Thirteen ON LES MIS, AND TRANSFIGURATIONS Copyright 2013 by John B. Reynolds (john@jrwrites.com) The first time I saw Les Miserables years ago at the theatre, its plot was pretty much lost to me. I ve learned more of Victor Hugo s great work since then, though, so when I saw the movie the other night, I followed the story much better. And what a story! When we left the theater, my wife told me she could see the column wheels turning in my head. Surely the story has a hundred columns in it. For starters, Les Mis is recognized as a tale of redemption, which would make it a great Easter column. But on the way to redemption, it s also a tale of change, which fits in perfectly with the Gospel passage on this Second of Lent: the Transfiguration of Jesus. It s hard to condense a novel of some 1500 pages (or a threehour film) down to a few sentences, so I won t even try. Suffice it to say that this is the story of two central characters: Jean Valjean and Inspector Javert. Valjean is a man who, recently released from prison after having spent years there for stealing bread, steals again, and is shown great mercy by a kindly bishop. Inspector Javert is the law, who, as observed by Sister Helena Burns, FSP in a recent Catholic New World piece about the film, is a man of untempered justice, and has put himself under the law s impersonal, blind eyes, as well. He believes salvation of every kind lies in the letter of the law. The story is filled with life lessons, and the one I m seeing at the moment is the notion that mercy can transform a person s life (in the case of Valjean), or, in an ironic and mournful twist, it can end a person s life (in the case of Javert). Per Hugo, his work details, a progress from evil to good, from injustice to justice, from falsehood to truth, from night to day from hell to heaven, from nothingness to God. The starting point: matter; destination: the soul. The hydra at the beginning, the angel at the end. From Greek mythology, hydras are multi headed water creatures that are really nasty to be around. Ask Hercules. So if we can take Hugo at his word hydra to angel Les Miserables is absolutely a story of transfiguation. In today s Gospel, we hear again the story of Peter, John, and James trip up the mountain with Jesus. And while Christ was praying, his face changed in appearance and his clothing became dazzling white. The apostles saw this, and they also saw Jesus speaking with Moses and Elijah of his upcoming days in Jerusalem. But the story, of course, isn t just about Christ s transfiguration into his full glory. Peter, John, and James are confused enough by all of this, then they hear God s voice in a cloud saying, This is my chosen Son; listen to him, and the implication is clear: if we embrace the Christ, his glory will be our own. And this follows, after all, because ultimately, as Paul points out in the second reading, we are citizens of heaven. Javert rejects mercy and is doomed. Valjean accepts it and goes from hydra to angel. Now that I know Les Miserables a little better, this seems the wiser choice.
