Dear Parish Family of St. Thomas, Second Homily Our Twelfth Annual Parish Golf Outing is now history. It is one of two annual fundraisers which helps us financially to do all the things we do ministerially to bring Christ s love and hope to His people. Needless to say, it was a great day weather wise, great scoring (both low scores and the highest high scores), great food and drink, great golfers numbering a total of ninety nine, great Oral Auction items and raffle prizes, and great camaraderie and great fellowship! A full financial report will be given after we pay all the bills of this great event. We owe tons of thanks to many people who made it such a great day. Thank you to Golf Outing Chairperson Tom Nicholas who has again led our Golf Committee through many meetings to help plan and execute a perfect day for all of our golfers. Thank you to his Core Committee of Jack Devron, Dan Fitzpatrick, John Heraty, Greg Korney, Ron Schaefer and Carol Wilson. Thank you to our friend, Bob Malpede Head Golf Professional and General Manager at White Deer Run Golf Course for his excellent cooperation and support in providing the great day. Thank you to all of our volunteers and anyone who did anything to help us with anther very successful event. And thank you to all of our local businesses and especially our parishioners who donated items and purchased raffle tickets for our event! Were you married in 1965? Then we need to celebrate with you and so does Archbishop Blaise Cupich. So have you registered for the Annual Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass? Please call Suzie at the Parish Office so that we can get you an invite. The Mass will be Sunday, August 30 at 2:45pm at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago. I would like to share the following prayer written by a husband: Dear Lord, Thank you for my wife. I am so blessed to have her in my life. I am so sorry that sometimes I am not patient with her. I snap at her when I get frustrated or overwhelmed and she doesn t deserve that. I need to respect her by being patient with her. Please help me to have self-control in this area of my life. Transform my heart, God, let me be a person of peace, full of joy and tranquility. I pray that every response towards my wife and my children and others would be said with patience. In Jesus name AMEN! Your Pastor, Rev. Thomas R. Rzepiela P.S. Thank you to all for your patience as we are freshening up our look in the Parish offices and meeting rooms. Sorry for any inconvenience. Hopefully, you will like the new look. 3

Faith-Filled Families GOD'S WORK We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a time. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged fulltime in works formally identified as being "God's work." But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God's work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot always see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is "God's work?" "This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent" (John 6:29). Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co. Marriage Moment "The whole Israelite community grumbled..." (Ex16:2) "Put away the old self of your former way of life..." (Ephesians 4: 22) It's easy to slip into the habit of grumbling to your spouse. Although some venting can be cathartic, this week focus on putting away your grumbling self and balance it with renewed gratefulness. Parenting Pointer For many people, summer is a good time to do recreational reading. What was your favorite book as a child? If your child is old enough you've probably already read it together. Talk about why it was your favorite. 2015 Susan Vogt The bread of life gives life to the world. Who is the bread of life? 10

On Settling Many of us hold back. We hedge. We settle. I do anyway. Not always, of course. Certainly I ve stretched myself many times over the years to go beyond my comfort zone, but many times, too, I ve been content with a tolerable situation--or maybe even a good situation--even though I know God has more in store for me. But sometimes the more-in -store may seem like just too much effort. I had a friend over for dinner a few months ago. I prepared the dish right in front of him: shrimp fried rice. First I cooked the rice and put it in the freezer to get it cold. Then I prepped the eggs. In the meantime, I thawed and boiled the shrimp. Then I prepped the vegetables: broccoli, carrots, red and yellow bell peppers, celery, onion. Then I brought the rice, eggs, shrimp, and veggies together in sesame oil and soy sauce, and over an hour after I started, I put the finished dish in front of my friend. He took one bite, said it was very, very good, but added, Frankly, I m not sure if it s worth the bother Which is precisely to my point. Look at the Israelites in todays first reading. They have forgotten that Moses took them out of Egypt--out of the bondage of slavery-- toward a new promised land. And in dramatic fashion, no less. But now listen to them as they complain to Moses and Aaron about their circumstance: Would that we had died at the Lord s hand in the land of Egypt, as we sat by our fleshpots and ate our fill of bread! But you had to lead us into this desert to make the whole community die of famine. Forgive the expression, but damned if you do/damned if you don t, you know? The Israelites had already taken one step of faith (through the parted sea) but when things get hard, they are ready to retreat back to--to settle back to--where they came from. Sometimes we re content with the old ways because we know the old ways. Sometimes the new way is too much bother Today s Gospel, the beginning of Christ s Bread of Life discourse, is--like the first reading--another example of God providing for his people. But it s also another example of God s people being prepared to settle for something less (here, quite literally bread and fish) than God s best. Jesus sees it coming when the crowds follow him across the water: Amen, amen, I say to you, you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled. Jesus goes on: Do not work for food that perishes but for the food that endures for eternal life Noting that their ancestors had eaten manna in the desert, the people ask Jesus for a sign that they might believe in him. Next week we will get into the details, but suffice it to say now that many of the people couldn t take the step of faith needed to go from loaves and fishes to the Bread of Life. They are more content with being satisfied in the here and now than in some God-provided future that takes them out of their element. Frankly, I m not sure it s worth the bother, perhaps they are saying. What I didn t tell my friend that night over steaming hot shrimp fried rice is that a good meal is always worth the bother. And Jesus has a great meal in mind. Copyright 2015 by John B. Reynolds AUG 8/9 SATURDAY 5:00 PM SUNDAY 7:30 AM SUNDAY 9:30 AM SUNDAY 11:15 AM PRESIDER Fr. Tom Rzepiela Fr. Tom Rzepiela Fr.
