In 2014, the Institute of Sociology at the University of Zielona Góra will celebrate its 20th anniversary. Since the beginning of this unit, primarily due to the proximity of the Polish-German border, in its research projects, subjects of broadly understood sociology of borderlands were undertaken. From 1996, regular conferences "Cross-borders in sociological perspective" were organized, gathering scientists and specialists from various fields, especially sociological ones, Polish and foreign alike. So far, there have been eight volumes within the monograph series published under the same title. The next (9 th ) conference will be held under a slogan "BORDERLANDS AND CENTERS OF MODERN EUROPE". We cordially invite to attend sociologists, demographers, historians, economists, political scientists, culture experts and representatives of related disciplines interested in issues of events happening within borders, whether Polish, intra- or inter-european. The main objective of the conference is to confront various theoretical and methodological standpoints, and to present the latest results of empirical research. Especially, we are interested in comparative analyses that show the complexity, diversity and spontaneity of processes occurring within different borders, between borders or between them and centers. We are also interested in a more general consideration regarding the processes and cross-border phenomena. The conference "Cross-borders in sociological perspective" will be an opportunity for a discussion about old and new problems of modern Europe in the context of ongoing changes. During panel sessions, discussions will focus on the relation between borderlands and center and the topic of borders policy (Marek Ziółkowski, Marek Szczepański, Anna Śliz, Joanna Kurczewska, Marek Okólski, Czesław Osękowski), the theory of borderlands (Grzegorz Babiński, Andrzej Sadowski, Zbigniew Kurcz), methodological problems of borderlands studies (Kazimierz M. Słomczyński, Henryk Domański), the topic of socio-cultural diffusion (Marian Golka, Andrzej Sakson, Władysław Misiak, Marian Niezgoda), as well as various trends within empirical research (Krystyna Janicka, Maria Zielińska, Ewa Narkiewicz-Niedbalec, Edward Hajduk). During the conference, several groups will be organized, meetings of which will concern the following thematic blocks: Areas of cooperation and cross-border exchange: possibilities and limitations Education, job market, economic behavior Changes in social structure, social mobility and migration The daily life of borderlands inhabitants - continuity and change Stereotypes, prejudice, xenophobia Cultural and social diffusion Individual and collective identity, historical and social memory National, ethnic and religious minorities within borderlands Pathological phenomena, smuggling of goods and people, crime Methodology of cross-border phenomena studies On 22nd October, within the conference at the University of Zielona Góra, there will be organized Polish-German workshops for students as a result of cooperation between the University of Zielona Góra and Brandeburgische Technische Uniwersität under the name of "Polish-German stereotypes in the minds of Polish and German students.
