CAMERA SEPARATORIA Volume 5, Number 1 / January 2013, 35-41 Paweł Konrad Zarzycki Zakład Toksykologii i Bioanalityki, Wydział Inżynierii Lądowej, Środowiska i Geodezji, Politechnika Koszalińska, Śniadeckich 2,75-453 Koszalin, e-mail: pkzarz@wp.pl or pawel_k_z@hotmail.com Wspomnienie o profesorze Henryku Lamparczyku W dniu 16 listopada 2012 roku zmarł Profesor Henryk Lamparczyk (1947-2012). Profesor całe swoje życie zawodowe poświęcił badaniom dotyczącym chromatografii, chemii fizycznej i chemometrii. Należał On do pionierów wykorzystania narzędzi chemometrycznych w przetwarzaniu i interpretacji danych pozyskanych poprzez spektroskopię, chromatografię oraz termoanalizę. Wiele prac Jego autorstwa włączając w to artykuł pt. The role of electric interactions in the retention index concept. Universal interaction indices for GLC, HPLC and TLC (Chromatographia 20, 1985, 283-288; pełną listę publikacji Profesora zamieszczam poniżej) jest powszechnie uznawanych za kamienie milowe współczesnej nauki o rozdzielaniu. In memory of professor Henryk Lamparczyk Professor Henryk Lamparczyk prematurely passed away on November 16, 2012, at age of 65 years. Professor made a massive contribution to chromatography, physical chemistry and chemometrics. His passion for science performed successfully out of the Poland during long-term research visits as the international competitive grants winner in Great Britain, Japan and Spain. Since 1974 Professor Henryk Lamparczyk has published over 100 scientific papers mainly related to environmental analysis, structureretention and structure-activity relationships, chromatography, drug analysis as well as pharmacokinetics. One of his first research interest was study on intermolecular interactions involved in supramolecular chemistry and separation science, particularly chromatography and electrophoresis. He clearly demonstrated that general behavior of the solute molecules in chromatographic systems can be explained on the basis of solute-phases reversible interactions like electrostatic (van der Waals) forces and stereoselective molecular fitting to stationary and mobile phases. In this field he has studied the effect of electrostatic interactions on chromatographic retention using number of analytes, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons,
36 P.K. Zarzycki polychlorinated biphenyls and steroids. He successfully proposed an electrostatic retention index system common to GC, HPLC and TLC based on the experimental data involving silica, octadecyl-silica, arenyl-silica as well as liquid crystalline stationary phases. His work entitled The role of electric interactions in the retention index concept. Universal interaction indices for GLC, HPLC and TLC (Chromatographia 20, 1985, 283-288; full publication list is enclosed below) is commonly recognized as the separation science milestone. Using simple molecular descriptors including molecule shape, polarizability, dipole moment, and ionization potential values of the solutes and mobile phase components, he and co-workers were successful to explain the retention properties of target analytes in complex chromatographic systems. In spite of his latest research, which was mainly focused on drug analysis and pharmacokinetic studies, he productively used and reported a planar chromatography technique as the key tool for preliminary study concerning separation and detection capability of complex mixtures, also using multivariate statistics approach including principal components analysis. He has published number of research papers concerning supramolecular chemistry, mainly based on temperature effects on host-guest interactions between cyclodextrins and steroids. Professor Henryk Lamparczyk successfully supervised nine PhD students. He was enormously generous with sharing, exchanging and discussing new research ideas and really appreciated any involvement of his co-workers. He never forced to be popular but always was clear in his opinions, statements and principles. Great passions of Professor Henryk Lamparczyk were history, architecture and music.
