The embodiment of Romanticism in 19th century music, Chopin s music grew from a tradition governed by nature and natural events, love and longing, happiness and sadness, life and death. It was within the particular culture of the suspended Polish State that he found inspiration in the simple rhythms of dance and poetry. His national roots produced flowers of universal appeal for generations of human beings from all corners of the world. We celebrated the man and his music here at St. Stanislaus widoczne! In a few weeks we ll see the arrival of pussy willows as we commemorate Palm Sunday. Sure most churches use palms, but the heritage of this church and many of its members is Polish and Central and Eastern European, a part of the world where pussy willows are part of that solemn holiday! You ll see it here at St. Stanislaus. The same can be said for the pisanki, the hollowed eggs brightly painted with various symbols and geometric designs which likewise are a part of those same cultures. In fact, Bernadette Zubel and Ray Vargas will be giving demonstrations as to the traditional decorating of Easter eggs at the Polish American Cultural Center on the corner of Lansing and East 65th on Saturday, March 13th at 11 AM. The decorated eggs brought to our church during Holy Week will grace the tomb of Jesus. Typical of the centuries old Slavic tradition, you ll see it here at St. Stanislaus. Then there is the parade of May 3rd, commemorating the signing of the Polish Constitution of 1791, the first democratic constitution in Europe and the prime reason for Poland s dismemberment shortly thereafter by the surrounding despots whose thrones were threatened by such a revolutionary idea. Some people will follow those who chose to have a parade in Parma while others will remain here in Warszawa to continue the tradition. At the end of the day many people will also choose to join the traditional coronation of Mary, Queen of Peace, Queen of the Americas and Queen of Poland! Mary is a strong part of that tradition and her veneration is part of the fabric of Polish culture. Where will the coronation take place? Where else??? St. Stanislaus. Here we nourish the Polish traditions and customs. As the scores of ancestors who chose to remain in their land, in their homes with their traditions and beliefs and values, we re sticking it out, fighting to maintain the freedoms for which those same ancestors fought. Jeszcze Polska nie zgineła...jeszcze Slavic Village nie zginęła! - St. Stanislaus, Immaculate Heart of Mary, the Polish American Cultural Center and the other national and cultural institutions in our noble hood are not pulling up stakes and leaving to escape the challenges of Warszawa. PASTORAL MESSAGE January 3 Stycznia 2010 PASTORAL MESSAGE February 28 Lutego 2010 WHY GO TO CONFESSION? Every year when Lent rolls around, we schedule extra times for confessions. This being a season of penitence and conversion, we want to give our people extra opportunities to encounter our Lord in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Culturally, of course, different people have different ideas about the Sacrament. Many people go out of their way to confess to a priest they do not know; others make sure to go to someone they do know. Some like to go to the same confessor, others like variety, and for others it doesn t really matter who is there. Some penitents remain anonymous behind the screen (by the way we really can NOT see through it!), and others sit face to face. Some like to talk an issue through, and others simply confess to God and await their penance. Just as there are different ways that penitents approach the Sacrament, so also are there different ways priests celebrate it. Just about everyone has a story about a priest who was hard of hearing, or worse, hard of heart. But even more common are stories about people encountering the grace of God precisely through the graciousness of the priest. Most priests will say that celebrating reconciliation is often the most moving experience of their priesthood. It is humbling that God can use an imperfect and frail man to minister the immensity of his mercy. Yet we still have so many who simply have stopped going to confession. The reasons are across the board, from mere laziness to well thought-out positions and many, many unanswered questions. Why can t I just confess to God? Won t he forgive me if I ask? Yes, but the priest does not forgive, he absolves. Absolution is a setting free, the proclamation of release, removing the power of sin to hold us in its grasp. But why do I have to say it out loud to another human being? Because when we sin, we not only offend God, we also hurt another human being. The wound of sin is not only personal, also it is social. Since we cannot apologize to each and every person we hurt, we make amends through the priest, who represents the church the People of God. Won t the priest think differently of me if he knows what I ve been doing? No, almost every priest I know has a well developed sense of amnesia. If he listens attentively to dozens of confessions, by the end of the session the last thing he wants to do is remember what people have said. Unless the penitent is in an ongoing confessor/penitent relationship, it is very unlikely that a priest will remember what you have said. Most importantly, it is a great gift given to us by Christ himself, and passed along through the ministry of the Church, so that we might hear again and again that we are forgiven and set free. Isn t that worth hearing from time to time? Please make a point of attending the lenten services this week, and listen for the voice of God calling out to you. Fr. Rozmawiał on z Mojżeszem i Eliaszem o Jego odejściu, którego miał dokonać w Jerozolimie (Łk 9, 31). Jednak w momencie, kiedy boski obłok znika, Mojżesz i Eliasz odchodzą. Zostaje sam Pan Jezus. Można to tłumaczyć, że po odejściu Starego Testamentu, o którym Pan Jezus i Żydzi mówili Prawo i Prorocy, symbolizowanego przez Mojżesza i Eliasza, nastaje czas Nowego Przymierza i Nowego Exodusu. W Panu Jezusie wypełniły się wszystkie proroctwa Starego Testamentu. On nie przyszedł znieść Prawa i Proroków, ale je wypełnić (por. Mt 5, 17). To Pan Jezus przynosi pełnię Objawienia o Bogu. Słuchać Pana to znaczy ufać Jego słowom. Cierpienie różnego rodzaju, wątpliwości w wierze, a w końcu śmierć będzie udziałem nas wszystkich. Placyd

Shrine Church of ST. STANISLAUS A TALE OF FORGIVENESS FROM A PARISHIONER During last Sunday s homily, Fr Mike asked, When do you remember someone forgiving you? I immediately thought of my Mom. Years ago, I had made some choices that were hurtful to my family. It was the only time we 7 kids saw my big 6 ft Dad, a Cleveland policeman, cry. Years passed; lots of pain for all. Mom was now in her 80 s and I knew she would soon be gone from this earth. I was so embarrassed to bring up the topic, but I knew what I needed to do. I nervously sat down next to her on the sofa and apologized. We shed some tears together. She placed her tiny wrinkled hand on my knee and said these simple words I will never forget, Oh honey, I forgave you a long time ago. What a moment of grace! Coincidentally, or "God-incidentally," I happened to be wearing the wedding ring my Dad gave her in 1940. As Father spoke those words, I touched her ring and thanked her for reminding me of just a taste of our Lord s Divine Mercy so readily available for all of us. Mom had a great devotion to St Faustina and the Divine Mercy Novena and I share that with her today. To make it even more special, Jesus first appeared to St Faustina on my birthday, Feb 22. ST. STANS HISTORICAL FACT by Rob Jagelewski. One of our neighboring parishes since the founding of St. Stanislaus in 1873 was St. Wenceslaus Parish which began in 1867. This was Cleveland s first Czech Catholic Parish. The church was initially located along Kingsbury Run at Arch Street (now East 35) near Woodland Avenue. The church was relocated in 1899 to East 37 and Broadway Avenue where it was located until 1963. The church was demolished during the construction of I 77. Many of our parish organizations, especially the Boy and Cub Scouts, attended the final Mass at this church. In 1923 Bishop Joseph Schrembs established the St. Wenceslaus Mission in Maple Heights for families who moved from the East 35 location. The mission was elevated to parochial status in 1924. This parish was closed in the last few years. Some of their members have joined St. Stanislaus Parish. SENIOR CORNER Dear Seniors, Well I think winter is almost over. I hope the snow is anyway. Mark your Calendars! It s time we all got together again! It s been two months since we have had our Golden Agers Meeting. Our next meeting is coming soon. It will be on Thursday, March 11th at 2:00PM in the Social Hall. We would like to invite all those who have not been to our meeting for a while, and we would like to welcome any new members who would like to join us. We have a good time. We play Bingo, we have a raffle, and we have a great lunch. Do you need a ride, no problem, I have a person who has volunteered to help me bring you to and from the meetings. All you have to do is call the parish office and leave me a message and I will call you back. Please be sure to leave your phone number when calling. I wanted to also make you aware that Sacred Heart of Jesus on East 71st Street will be having their Anniversary Mass on Monday, March 1st at 11:00AM. A NOTE FROM THE POLISH HERITAGE ALLIANCE The May 3rd Polish Constitution Day Parade will be celebrated in Slavic Village, the heart of Polish tradition, as it has been in recent years. Organized by the Polish Heritage Alliance, this is a most notable event, commemorating an important date in Polish history, the celebration of the first democratic Constitution in Europe in 1791 (the second in the world after the US Constitution). The newly formed group met under the direction of Dr. M. Klymiuk-Wieczerski. At their meeting Attorney Ted Sliwinski was appointed Chairman of the organization designated to organize the parade. Other Polish organizations were in attendance at the meeting. The next meeting will be held on March 3, 2010 @ 7 PM at 6966 Broadway Avenue.
