Saint Joseph Basilica 3 THIRD SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME January 21, 2018 Follow me and I will make you fishers of men. - Mark 1:17 Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. With these words, Jesus invites Simon (Peter) and his brother Andrew to follow Him and be His disciples. We often speak of the subtleties of translation. In the original Greek in which St. Mark wrote his Gospel, a better translation would be, Come after me, and I will make you become fishers of men. It is the beginning of a process. We are called to that same process. It is not as if it happens quite suddenly. It happens over time, and it is a progression. If we are to be fishers of men, we are to be evangelizers and disciples of the Lord, and we are to represent what it means to be part of the Kingdom of God. Of course, Simon and Andrew abandoned their nets and followed him. It may be more difficult for us to abandon our nets, so to speak, but it does prompt us that we need to make major changes in our lives if we are going to follow Jesus. Simon and Andrew, and then James and John, were common men, normal people. They had no theological credentials nor did they have any special status in the world. Most of us are similar. Jesus did not select them (or us) for who they were. He called them for what He could do through them. It is the same with each of us. Yes, we are called, but in order to really fulfill our calling we need to follow and trust in Jesus. Mrs. Woznicki was a valuable member of the St. Joseph Rectory staff for over 15 years and has recently retired. Congratulations to our 8th Grade student, Elzbieta Gronek! Elzbieta's poem, "The Changes We Can Make" was selected as the winning entry in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Poetry Contest. This past Saturday, January 13, 2018, Elzbieta was recognized at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Breakfast at Worcester State University. Her winning poem appeared in the Breakfast Program booklet, and she received an award. Please take a moment to read her incredible poem: The Changes We Can Make I see injustice in many places Violence, racism, poverty, and terrorism. These injustices don't always happen near us But that doesn't mean it is not something to discuss. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke out against The injustices that were happening in his time and place. If I were Dr. King, Jr. today I would take action without delay. I would feed the hungry Find a home for the homeless, Oppose racism, Speak out against violence. I would use peaceful words, not guns to stop violence Because nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice, not people. CHOIR CONCERT This Sunday, January 21, at 2:30pm we expect that we all will take advantage of this unique opportunity to once again enjoy the beauty of Christmas carols performed by various choirs. It is also fitting to hear different choirs from various parishes. Choirs who will regale us with their professional voices include members of Our Lady of Czestochowa parishes of Boston and Worcester, St. John the Baptist parish of Salem MA, and our own wonderful St. Joseph Basilica choir. I believe that our choir members who dedicate so much time and effort will be pleased to see you as a sign of your appreciation and support. 9:30 a.m. Mass celebrating National Migration Week, a tradition that the students look forward to each year. The children and their families represent various cultures and enjoy sharing and recognizing each other s heritage. Please join us for this special tradition. Bishop Robert McManus will be the main celebrant and homilist. Following Migration Mass, the St. Joseph School students, faculty and staff will host an Open House from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. showcasing our students' work. This year's theme is, "The Winter Olympics." There will also be food & entertainment. On Wednesday, January 31st, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., the St. Joseph School Home and School Association will host its Annual Spaghetti Dinner. The dinner is prepared by the Knights of Columbus and consists of spaghetti and meatballs, salad, garlic bread, and dessert. Cost is $5 for adults and $3 for children. Tickets are available in advance at the school. A second Open House will also take place from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. showcasing our students' work.

Saint Joseph Basilica 5 CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK National Catholic Schools Week is an annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. The observance starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2018 will be January 28 to February 3. Catholic schools all across America typically celebrate Catholic Schools Week with special Masses, Open Houses, and other fun activities for students, families, parishioners, and the community at large. This celebration week was established in 1974 to recognize Catholic education as a great gift to the Church and the nation. The schools are communities -- small families in their own right, but also members of the larger community of home, church, city, and nation. Faith, knowledge, and service are three measures by which any Catholic school can and should be judged. REVEREND JOSEPH R. BIELONKO On Sunday, January 14, Reverend Joseph R. Bielonko passed away to eternity at 6am in St. Vincent Hospital. He enrolled and studied for the priesthood at the Franciscan Order in Poland and was ordained as a priest on April 12, 1959. He came to the United States to work with Polish Catholics in Chicopee MA in the 1960 s and served as associate pastor at Our Lady of Jasna Gora in Clinton and then at St. Hedwig s in Southbridge. From 1970-83, he ministered at St. Joseph Church in Webster. His last 17 years were spent at St. Andrew Bobola in Dudley MA. He was well-known for his special rapport with the young people of our parishes and was always visible in Polish social cultural celebrations. With his quiet demeanor, he helped many people in various ways. He had several brothers and sisters in Poland but did not have family in the United States. His hobbies were photography, skiing, and soccer. Despite his athletic interests by the end of his life he endured many severe health difficulties. His funeral was held Saturday, January 20, here at St. Joseph Basilica. Let us keep him in our prayers and may his work and service to the Polish-American community be rewarded in heaven. Bilety są dostępne z wyprzedzeniem w szkole. KS. JÓZEF R. BIELONKO W niedzielę, 14 stycznia, o godzinie 6:00 w Szpitalu St. Vincent w Worcester, odszedł do wieczności ksiądz Józef R. Bielonko. Swoją drogę do kapłaństwa rozpoczął w Polsce w Zakonie Franciszkanów. Święcenia kapłańskie przyjął 12 kwietnia 1959 r. Do Stanów Zjednoczonych przybył 1960r. i posługiwał jako wikariusz w parafii Matki Bożej Jasnogórskiej w Clinton, a następnie w parafii św. Jadwigi w Southbridge. W latach 1970 1983 posługiwał w parafii św. Józefa w Webster. Ostatnie 17 lat jego służby było związane z parafią św. Andrzeja Boboli w Dudley. Ksiądz Józef był znany z pracy z młodzieżą, a także zangażowania się w życie kulturalno społeczne Polaków. Wspierał wielu potrzebujących w różnorakich potrzebach.
