Now more than ever, our country needs prayer. Come and be a disciple, even if only for 15 minutes. Sponsored by the Peconic Respect Life Association There will be a Rosary said every hour beginning after the 5 PM Mass. The first hour (6:00 to 7:00) will be the Polish Rosary and prayers. From 7:00 to 8:00 will be the Spanish Rosary and prayers. The last hour (8:00 to 9:00) we will say the Rosary and prayers in English. Throughout the evening will be Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and the night will conclude with Benediction. The Advent Season Making the beginning of the Church s liturgical year, the four weeks of Advent lead us to the celebration of Christmas. Advent s familiar sights and sounds stir in us a readiness to receive our savior, while sharpening our sense of the world s need for redemption and of the great mystery of God s becoming human for us. Origins of Advent Advent began sometime after the 4 th century as a time of preparation for Epiphany not in anticipation of Christmas. Epiphany celebrates the manifestation of Christ by remembering the visit of the Magi and the baptism of Jesus. At this time new Christians were baptized and received into the faith, and so the early Church instituted a 40-day period of fasting and repentance. Later, in the 6 th century, Pope St. Gregory the great was the first to associate this season of Advent with the coming of Christ. Originally it was not the coming of the Christ-child that was anticipated, but rather, the second coming of Christ. By the Middle Ages the Church had extended the celebration of Advent to the familiar format we know today. The early weeks are rich with the prophecies of Isaiah, reminding us to wait and prepare for the coming Messiah. Later, the pace quickens and we focus more directly on the events leading up to Jesus birth. During the first part of Advent, the prophecies of Isaiah and John the Baptist remind us that we are waiting for God s coming and need to prepare. During the latter part of the season the focus shifts more directly on the events leading up to Jesus birth. These twin perspectives give richness to our observance of Advent, leading us to introspection and renewal, and to the exuberant joy and celebration of Christmas. The Three Arrivals of Christ Jesus Comes in Human History Our celebration of Christmas focuses on the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. The Christmas pageants and liturgies all help us recall the moment Jesus was born as a human being to live his destiny as the Son of God and our Redeemer. Jesus Comes in Our Hearts Alive and among us through the Holy Spirit, Jesus continually reaches out to us. Advent renews our desire for the daily coming of Jesus as we recall the story of our salvation and look forward to the coming of the Kingdom. We wait in joyful hope as the Eucharistic liturgy says, for the coming of that kingdom. Jesus Comes in Glory The haunting melody and refrains of O Come, O Come Emmanuel serve to remind us of our longing for the completion of Christ s reign at the end of time. This season gives special meaning to the phrase from the Lord s Prayer, thy Kingdom come. The first week of Advent points directly at Christ s coming. Even though there is some apocalyptic language, the overall tenor of the passage is one of hope and encouragement. Though fear and foreboding are significant elements of this event, Jesus says, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. (Lk. 21:28) Signs will be given, and God s people must be alert, constantly praying for strength, in preparation to stand before the Son of Man (Lk. 21:36).
Światło w tunelu (Prorok Daniel 9, 4-19) Uważna lektura tekstu modlitwy proroka Daniela pozwala nam dostrzec silne poczucie grzechu całego narodu i słuszność kary, jaką Bóg na niego zesłał, w postaci niewoli babilońskiej. Wyznaniu win człowieka świadomego zejścia z drogi Bożego Prawa towarzyszy jednak nadzieja, że Bóg przebaczy i dokona wyzwolenia, jak niegdyś uczynił to w czasie wyjścia z Egiptu. Daniel widzi przed sobą Boga miłosiernego i do Niego też się modli. Wie, że Jahwe okazuje łaskawość pomimo błędów i niewierności ludzi wobec przymierza. Paradoksalnie, Izraelici dostrzegają Boże miłosierdzie dopiero z perspektywy niewoli. Widzą gdzieś z daleka światełko w tunelu swojej beznadziei, rozgoryczenia i rozpaczy. I mają świadomość, że nie są sami. Boże miłosierdzie jest najlepszym lekarstwem na grzech oraz źródłem nadziei dla człowieka wszystkich czasów. Jak uczył św. Jan Paweł II, Poza miłosierdziem Bożym nie istnieje żadne inne źródło nadziei dla ludzi. Dlatego z głębi ludzkiego serca wciąż powinno płynąć ku Bogu tęskne wołanie o miłosierdzie, które najpełniej przejawia się w przebaczeniu grzechów. Warto zastanowić się, zadumać nad sobą w porę temu służy adwentowe oczekiwanie w atmosferze czujności i modlitwy. Ma ono zapobiec dostaniu się w niewolę złości, gniewu, urazy, fałszywych świadectw, przekleństw, zazdrości czy wywyższania się ponad innych. Patrząc na Boga, w blasku Jego miłosierdzia, zobaczymy wtedy nas prawdziwych. I nie będzie to okazja do lęku i ucieczki przed Bogiem, ale do powrotu do utraconej wolności, zagubionej miłości, zmarnowanych darów. Boże miłosierdzie wzywa nas bowiem do powrotu w kierunku najczystszego Źródła i zanurzenia się w Nim, by odczuć ożywczą świeżość. Adwent Czuwanie z wiarą i modlitwą pozwala rozpoznawać znaki nadejścia Pana we wszystkich sytuacjach życia i trwać w oczekiwaniu Jego powtórnego przyjścia na końcu czasów. Na ulicach już pojawiły się świąteczne dekoracje a wielkie sieci kuszą nas promocjami. Ale sumienie, nasz wewnętrzy strażnik, każe zachować spokój. Wręcz przestrzega, by nie dać się zwieść temu, co kolorowe, miłe, wzbudzające pozytywne emocje. I przypomina o tym szczególnym czasie czterech tygodni przygotowania. Więcej. Podpowiada, że te cztery tygodnie w sposób niezwykle intensywny mówią o całej naszej drodze wiary, o drodze człowieka, zmierzającego przez całe życie na spotkanie Pana, a cała nasza historia jest oczekiwaniem na dzień, gdy nasz Pan przyjdzie w chwale, wszystko czyniąc nowe (Ap 21,5). Nie dając się zwieść idziemy za wskazaniem opublikowanego pod koniec Jubileuszu Miłosierdzia słownika Grzech Miłosierdzie Pojednanie i po raz kolejny uświadamiamy sobie, że istotą Adwentu jest wezwanie do czuwania i modlitwy. Czuwanie z wiarą i modlitwą pozwala rozpoznawać znaki nadejścia Pana we wszystkich sytuacjach życia i trwać w oczekiwaniu Jego powtórnego przyjścia na końcu czasów (s. 30). Kolejną podpowiedź znajdujemy w opublikowanym na zakończenie Jubileuszu Liście Misericordia et misera. Pisząc o swoim gorącym pragnieniu aby Słowo Boże było coraz bardziej czczone, znane i upowszechnione, aby poprzez nie można było lepiej zrozumieć tajemnicę miłości, która wypływa z tego źródła miłosierdzia (p. 7) zachęca nas do kreatywności, aby wzbogacić to wydarzenie inicjatywami, które zachęcają wierzących, by byli żywymi narzędziami rozpowszechniania Słowa. Z pewnością wśród tych inicjatyw znajduje się szersze upowszechnienie lectio divina, aby w modlitewnej lekturze świętego tekstu życie duchowe znalazło wsparcie i rozwój (tamże). Papieska propozycja współbrzmi z tematem rozpoczynającego się w I Niedzielę Adwentu nowego Roku Kościelnego. Idźcie i głoście. Słuchać by głosić. Świadkiem miłosierdzia nie może być ktoś, kto miłosierdzia nie doświadczył. Głosem nie będzie człowiek, który sam Głosu nie usłyszał. Skoro modlitwa, czuwanie, lectio divina, to przede wszystkim słuchanie. Wsłuchiwanie się w głosy, rozbrzmiewające w Słowie i liturgii Kościoła. W naszym przygotowaniu cztery głosy: Izajasza, Jana Chrzciciela, św. Józefa i Maryi. Świadków nadziei, Nadchodzącego, ciszy i Tajemnicy. Oni przygotują nas na spotkanie świadków radości. A ci zaprowadzą nas do miejsca, gdzie swoje Oblicze ukaże nam On, Emmanuel, Bóg z nami, Głos nad głosami. Zatem zapraszamy do wspólnego słuchania.
