Introduction of new engines designs with higher thrust, lower fuel consumption and lower noise emissions enforce continual modification of casting materials, models, ceramic moulds, including melting, pouring and heat treatment processes parameters. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of pouring temperature and cobalt aluminate modifier in the subsurface layer of the mould on macrostructure of the IN 713C castings. The size of misruns, chill, columnar and equiaxed zones on the surface of the wedge castings is most affected by pouring temperature. Additionally it was proved that cobalt aluminate is an effective modifier of the IN713C superalloy causing not only refinement of equiaxed grains, but also reduction in the columnar grain size fraction. Key words: investment casting, superalloys, microstructure, grain size, dendrite arm spacing. 1. INTRODUCTION IN 713C superalloy in as-cast state is mainly used, among others, for aircraft engine components. These elements are casted using the lost-wax method with multilayer ceramic moulds. Casted gas turbine blades are characterised by coarse grains of heterogeneous microstructure. The casting often does not meet mechanical properties required from the kinds of elements used in the aerospace industry [1, 2]. The microstructure improvement of nickel-based superalloy blades may be obtained by appropriate shaping of grains size during the casting process [3, 4]. Controlled grain size can be achieved by specific pouring temperature, mould temperature, and the use of modifier in the surface layer of the mould [5, 6]. Highest grain refinement of nickel-based superalloys was obtained with application of cobalt aluminate modifier [7, 8]. The aim of presented study was to determine the effect of pouring temperature and CoAl 2 modifier in the top layer of the mould on the macrostructure of casted IN 713C superalloy. In order to determine these relations, nine wedge casts were manufactured with different pouring temperature and the amount of modifier in the surface layer of ceramic moulds. 2. RESEARCH MATERIAL As the research material, nine IN 713C wedge castings obtained with investment casting method were used, which chemical composition is shown in Table 1. Designed casting system, geometry and dimensions of the wedge castings and selected investment casting process stages are shown in Figure 1. Manufactured wedge castings differed by: pouring temperature: 1450 C, 1480 C, 1520 C, the amount of CoAl 2 modifier in the surface layer of ceramic mould: 0, 5 and 10 wt %. For each wedge casting the following measurements were performed: area fraction of equiaxed, columnar and chill zones and the misruns, grain size in the equiaxed zone on the surface of castings, secondary dendrite arm spacing. 3. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS The surface of the wedge castings was chemically etched with Marble etchant, of chemical composition as follows: 10 g CuS, 50 ml HCl, 50 ml H 2 O. This etching solution properly exposes grain structure on the casting surface. Using Olympus SZX-9 stereoscopic microscope for macrostructure images, equiaxed, columnar and chill zones were identified. Binarization and the respective area measurements were performed using MetIlo14 software which is dedicated for automatic image analysis. Macrostructure photos with designated boundaries of the areas of interest are shown in Figure 2. Measurements of grain size were executed for each specimen in the equiaxed grains zone. Images of this zone were obtained using a stereomicroscope with polarized light. Then, using the MetIlo14 software, the primary grain boundaries binarization was performed (Fig. 3) and the grain size describing parameters were calculated, including mean grain area A, mm 2, and coefficient of variation of the area υ(a), %, as the quotient of standard deviation and the mean grain area [9]. To reveal the dendritic structure of the castings was obtained by etching solution consisting of: 4 g CuCl 2 H 2 O, 2 g NH 4 Cl, 5 ml HNO 3, 50 ml HCl, 80 ml H 2 O, 5 g FeCl 3 (Fig. 4). For each casting, a series of microstructure images was captured, showing dendrite arms. The average dendrite arm spacing λ, μm, and the coefficient of variation of the secondary dendrite arm spacing υ(λ), %, as the ratio of the standard deviation and the mean value of dendrite arm spacing were estimated [10]. RESULTS OF EXAMINATION Measurement results of area fraction of equiaxed, columnar and chill zones for misruns are given in Table 2. From presented data one can conclude that the strongest influence on the area fraction of zones has the pouring temperature. The samples poured at 1450 C were found to have relatively large, unwanted misruns areas and the grains of columnar and chill type. The samples poured at 1520 C show lower misruns share on the surface, and slightly larger share of the total surface areas of unwanted chill and columnar grains. Casting of specimens at 1450 C (underheatin and 1520 C (overheatin promotes formation of misruns and chill and columnar grains, resulting in inferior casting properties. The most convenient specified areas ratio can be observed for specimens casted at 1480 C. They are characterized by a lack misruns and low surface share of chill grains. Analysing specimens casted at 1480 C, the one modified with 5% of CoAl2O4 shows the smallest share of undesirable surface zones (misruns, chill grains), while the largest share of equiaxed grains (79.7%). The increase in the size of equiaxed zone (favourable for investment castings products) is also influenced by addition of modifier in the surface layer of the mould. Choosing from three specimen casted at 1480 C, the one with 5% modifier shows the largest equiaxed grains area. The effect of pouring temperature and the modifier content in the mould on the grain size of the casting is shown in Figure 5. The modifier amount in the mould has the strongest influence on the grain size. On the surface of the specimens casted without the modifier, grains are very large the average surface areas of the grains are 11.6, 22.0 and 50.4 mm 2. These specimens are further characterized by high heterogeneity of grain size, what was additionally confirmed by high value of grain size variation coefficient in the range of 84 132%. Addition 5% of CoAl 2 modifier affects grain refinement the average grain surface areas are 0.28, 0.82 and 1.52 mm 2. Increasing this amount up to 10% does not result in further significant grain refinement. Surface modification strongly influences reduction of grain size heterogeneity on the surface of the casting, as is demonstrated by coefficient of variation in the range of 61 79%, presented in Figure 5. Pouring temperature has a lesser impact on the grain size on the surface of the casting. With decrease of pouring temperature for the same content of surface modifier, the grain size is being reduced. High grain refinement in the specimen casted at 1450 C with 5% modifier content (A = 0.28 mm 2 ) is disadvantageous due to decrease of creep strength. The grain size of specimen casted at 1480 C with 5% modifier content (A = 0.82 mm 2 ) is preferred due to better properties of the casting. Pouring temperature and the modifier content in the mould have an effect on the secondary dendrite arms spacing, what is shown in Figure 6. The highest average dendrite arms spacing can be observed for specimen casted at 1450 C, and is as follows: 95.2, 99.1 i 95.3 μm. An increase in the pouring temperature to 1480 C causes reduction in this spacing, reaching the minimum value. Casting at 1520 C influenced the re-increase of dendrite arm spacing. Secondary dendrites arm spacing is relatively high for specimens without the modifier. The use of 5% of the modifier significantly reduced this value. For specimen casted at 1480 C with 5% surface modifier content, the average spacing between the secondary dendrite arms has the lowest value 87.1 μm. Increasing the amount of modifier up to 10%, increases this value. Low dendrite arms spacing is preferred due to the strength properties of castings. Fig. 5. CONCLUSION Based on obtain results of the influence of technological parameters on the macrostructure of IN 713C superalloy castings one can conclude that: 1. Pouring temperature has the strongest effect on misruns, chill, columnar and equiaxed zones areas on the surface of the wedge castings. The pouring temperature of 1480 C provides smallest share of misruns, chill and columnar zones and the largest share of equiaxed grains zone in the casting. 2. The CoAl 2 modifier content in the surface layer of the mould has the strongest impact on the grain size on the surface of the wedge casting. Castings obtained by pouring into the mould with 5% CoAl 2 modifier content show most convenient grains size and shape and the smallest heterogeneity. 3. Castings of IN 713C nickel-based superalloy casted at 1480 C with 5% CoAl 2 modifier content in the first layer of the mould are characterized by lack of misruns, proper grain size and low dendrite arm spacing. MATERIAŁ I METODYKA BADAŃ Materiałem do badań było 9 odlewów klinowych, otrzymanych metodą odlewania precyzyjnego do wielowarstwowych form ceramicznych metodą traconego wosku z nadstopu IN 713C. Wykonane odlewy klinowe różniły się: temperaturą zalewania do formy odlewniczej: 1450 C, 1480 C, 1520 C, ilością modyfikatora CoAl 2 w warstwie przypowierzchniowej formy: 0, 5, 10% mas. 3. WYNIKI I ICH DYSKUSJA Na wielkość niedolewów, strefy kryształów zamrożonych, kolumnowych i równoosiowych na powierzchni badanych odlewów klinowych najsilniej wpływa temperatura zalewania. Próbki odlane z temperatury 1520 C charakteryzują się mniejszym udziałem powierzchniowym niedolewów, natomiast większym całkowitym udziałem powierzchniowym niepożądanych obszarów ziaren zamrożonych i kolumnowych. Najlepsze proporcje poszczególnych stref mają próbki odlane z temperatury 1480 C. Charakteryzują się one brakiem niedolewów oraz niewielkim udziałem powierzchniowym ziaren zamrożonych. Na zwiększenie wielkości strefy kryształów równoosiowych wpływa dodanie modyfikatora w warstwie powierzchniowej formy. Ponieważ wzrost udziału modyfikatora z 5% do 10% powoduje zwiększenie stref ziaren kolumnowych i zamrożonych, najkorzystniejsza zawartość CoAl 2 w pierwszej warstwie formy ceramicznej wynosi 5%. 4. PODSUMOWANIE Na wielkość niedolewów, strefy kryształów zamrożonych, kolumnowych i równoosiowych na powierzchni badanych odlewów klinowych najsilniej wpływa temperatura zalewania. Temperatura zalewania wynosząca 1480 C zapewnia uzyskanie odlewów o najmniejszej wielkości niedolewów, strefy kryształów zamrożonych i kolumnowych, a największej strefy ziaren równoosiowych.
