Archdiocesan Youth Conference Day On Saturday, November 19th, the Archdiocesan Office of Youth & Young Adult Ministry invites all parishes and campus ministry programs to join them for this great day being held at the Archdiocesan Youth Retreat Center. The Archdiocesan Youth Conference (AYC) is a daylong event where high school teens from all over the Archdiocese come together for a day of faith, fun and fellowship. 4 As the weather grows colder and the leaves fall, and Thanksgiving and Christmas approach, it is natural that our thoughts turn to those whom we have loved who are no longer with us. How appropriate, then, that the Catholic Church offers us November, which begins with All Saints Day and All Souls Day, as the Month of the Holy Souls in Purgatory - those who have died in grace, yet who failed in this life to make satisfaction for all of their sins. In recent years, perhaps no Catholic doctrine has been more misunderstood by Catholics themselves than the doctrine of Purgatory. Consequently, we tend to downplay it, even seem a little embarrassed by it, and it is the Holy Souls who suffer because of our discomfort with the doctrine. Purgatory is not, as many people think, one last trial; all of those who make it to Purgatory will one day be in Heaven. Purgatory is where those who have died in grace, but who have not fully atoned for the temporal punishments resulting from their sins, go to finish their atonement before entering Heaven. A soul in Purgatory may suffer, but he has the assurance that he will ultimately enter Heaven when his punishment is complete. Catholics believe Purgatory is an expression of God's love, His desire to cleanse our souls of all that might keep us from experiencing the fullness of joy in Heaven. As Christians, we don't travel through this world alone. Our salvation is wrapped up with the salvation of others, and charity requires us to come to their aid. The same is true of the Holy Souls. In their time in Purgatory, they can pray for us, and we should pray for the faithful departed that they may be freed from the punishment for their sins and enter into Heaven. We should pray for the dead throughout the year, especially on the anniversary of their death, but in this Month of the Holy Souls, we should devote some time every day to prayer for the dead. We should start with those closest to us - our mother and father, for instance - but we should also offer prayers for all the souls, and especially for those most forsaken. We believe that those Holy Souls for whom we pray will continue to pray for us after they have been released from Purgatory. If we live Christian lives, we too will likely find ourselves in Purgatory someday, and our acts of charity toward the Holy Souls there now will ensure that they remember us before the throne of God when we are most in need of prayers. It's a comforting thought, and one that should encourage us, especially in this month of November, to offer our prayers for the All Souls. November 9, Dedication of St. John Lateran Basilica The Temple of Stones is a Symbol of the Living Church November 9 the liturgy celebrates the dedication of the Lateran Basilica, called mother and head of all the churches of the city and the world. In fact, this basilica was the first to be built after Emperor Constantine s edict, in 313, granted Christians freedom to practice their religion. The emperor himself gave Pope Miltiades the ancient palace of the Laterani family, and the basilica, the baptistery, and the patriarchate, that is, the Bishop of Rome s residence where the Popes lived until the Avignon period were all built there. The basilica s dedication was celebrated by Pope Sylvester around 324 and was named Most Holy Savior; only after the 6th century were the names of St. John the Baptist and St. John the Evangelist added, and now is typically denominated by these latter. On this solemnity the Word of God recalls an essential truth: the temple of stones is a symbol of the living Church, the Christian community, which in their letters the Apostles Peter and Paul already understood as a spiritual edifice, built by God with living stones, namely, Christians themselves, upon the one foundation of Jesus Christ, who is called the cornerstone. Brothers, you are God s building, St. Paul wrote, and added: holy is God s temple, which you are The beauty and harmony of the churches, destined to give praise to God, also draws us human beings, limited and sinful, to convert to form a cosmos, a well-ordered structure, in intimate communion with Jesus, who is the true Saint of saints. This happens in a culminating way in the Eucharistic liturgy, in which the ecclesia, that is, the community of the baptized, come together in a unified way to listen to the Word of God and nourish themselves with the Body and Blood of Christ. From these two tables the Church of living stones is built up in truth and charity and is internally formed by the Holy Spirit transforming herself into what she receives, conforming herself more and more to the Lord Jesus Christ. She herself, if she lives in sincere and fraternal unity, in this way becomes the spiritual sacrifice pleasing to God.

Dlaczego mamy obowiązek modlić się za zmarłych? Przede wszystkim dlatego, że zmarły nie może sam sobie pomóc. Zmarłemu, który cierpi w czyśćcu, mogą pomóc tylko żyjący na ziemi. Tylko my możemy zmarłych uwolnić z czyśćca i zaprowadzić ich do nieba. Z tego powodu modlitwa za zmarłych to jeden z największych uczynków miłosierdzia. Słowa św. Tomasza z Akwinu: Bóg przyjmuje łaskawiej i częściej wysłuchuje modlitw za zmarłych niż tych, które zanosimy za żyjących. Zmarli bowiem bardziej potrzebują tej pomocy, nie mogąc tak jak żywi, pomóc sobie samym i zasłużyć na to, ażeby Bóg ich wybawił. z kolei św. Jan Chryzostom powiedział: Nie wahajmy się nieść pomocy tym, którzy odeszli, i ofiarujmy za nich nasze modlitwy. Jeśli synowie Hioba zostali oczyszczeni przez ofiarę ich ojca, dlaczego mielibyśmy wątpić, że nasze ofiary za zmarłych przynoszą im jakąś pociechę Zmarli proszą Ciebie o modlitwę Bł. Stanisław Papczyński po wizji dusz czyśćcowych, podczas której doświadczył męczarni zmarłych cierpiących w czyśćcu, założył w Kościele Zgromadzenie Księży Marianów, którego celem jest modlitwa za zmarłych i zachęcanie do tego innych. O konieczności modlitwy za zmarłych przypominało wielu innych świętych, którzy otrzymali dar nadprzyrodzonego kontaktu z duszami czyśćcowymi. Byli to między innymi św. Faustyna, św. Ojciec Pio, św. Jan Vianney. Święty Jan Paweł II nauczał: Modlitwa za zmarłych jest ważną powinnością, bowiem nawet jeśli odeszli w łasce i w przyjaźni z Bogiem, być może potrzebują jeszcze ostatniego oczyszczenia, by dostąpić radości nieba. Jesteśmy zobowiązani do modlitwy za zmarłych choćby dlatego, że nasze życie na ziemi nie będzie trwało wiecznie i być może my sami kiedyś będziemy potrzebować takiej pomocy od innych. Doświadczenie uczy, że osoby, które modlą się za zmarłych, zwykle doznają od nich skutecznej pomocy, tak jak gdyby Pan Bóg chciał przez ten fakt podkreślić, że ten rodzaj modlitwy jest mu szczególnie miły.
