From The Editor s Desk The first time Do you remember the first time you rode a motorcycle? The shaking left hand slowly releasing the clutch until it all went quiet because the right hand was too cautious with the throttle? I ve been reminded of it in the last week as I started to learn how to put an edition of The Journal together for real. The training course the Club organised gave me the theory but, like remembering what the instructor said, it only sinks in when you do it for yourself. My first full Journal is now almost complete. All I have to do is type the rest of this editorial then I can send the completed edition to Jim Bruce to add the commercial adverts, tidy up my typesetting errors and send it to the printers. Although this is my third editorial, this is the first edition that I ve put together myself. The June and July editions were entirely due to Jims generosity of time and effort and the Club in general (and me in particular) owe him a very large debt of gratitude. Compiling this edition also showed how much work my predecessor Martin Ellis put into developing techniques to speed up Journal production. Contributing to The Journal I received an a few days ago asking how to submit an article for publication. The best way to send things to me is by attaching them to an (or several if your Internet Service Provider is fussy about the size of attachments). Text can be in Microsoft Word (.doc or.docx) formats or Rich Text (.rtf). Photographs should be sent full-size rather than compressed. Please do not spend hours carefully laying out a mixture of text and photographs into a single document. I ve had several such pieces lately and all of them assumed an A4 page size whereas The Journal is A5 spread over two columns. Giving me everything separately lets me make best use of the space available as well as saving me a lot of time. I m happy to publicise members charitable events, such as the two featured this month, but I need details of them at least two months in advance otherwise the article is likely to follow the event. Safety Training or just plain fun? Robert Bensley is organising a track day at Snetterton later this month (see advert for full details). Whilst some of us might dream that this is the first step to taking over from Rossi there is another aspect to track days that isn t often mentioned. The better your control of the motorcycle, the quicker you go round the track. As well as the satisfaction of improving your riding skills, you are also 4 BMW Club Journal August 2010
learning what the bike is capable of when something goes wrong and avoiding a large heavy object that appeared from nowhere is the only thing on your mind. A track day is the obvious place to learn the bikes (and your own) limits in a safe environment. More about brakes Last month I said that the GS had an intermittent brake problem. The diagnosis was a faulty ABS modulator, which Paul at Chester Motorrad worked wonders to sort out for me. BMW provided the part as a goodwill gesture on the basis that I paid for the labour required to fit it. Paul also managed to find me a time for the work that fitted perfectly with an overcrowded schedule. Just under 300 for labour and brake fluid is not pocket-money but it s a lot better than the 1300 it could have cost, particularly since my contribution means that the work carries a two-year warranty. It s good the see that BMW are willing to support their motorcycles well outside the official warranty period. It s also good to get the excellent service that the BMW dealer chain is reputed to give. The subject of servo-assisted brakes is, unfortunately, one that often crops up. Mark Dutton, our National Social Secretary, is due at his dealer with the same problem as I had, with a bike of almost identical age and mileage. Simon Crossley of the Yorkshire section, who rides an R1150RT with the same braking system, has started to research reported failures to see whether it can be shown that there is a fundamental problem with them. If you have experience of a failure with servo-assisted brakes (fitted from 2001 to 2006 model years if I remember correctly) then Simon would like to know about it. His username on the Club Forum is moorlander999, or, for those who don t use the Forum, I ll forward correspondence to him. Right to reply Paul Nadin, who edits Torque Reaction, sometimes forwards me letters in advance of publication. He does this when a criticism of a business or individual is expressed on the grounds that common courtesy demands the right to reply. If you feel the need to comment unfavourably on a Club officer (or an event organised by one) or a business then I will forward a copy of your letter to the person or organisation concerned and will wait until a reply is received before publishing both. Torque Reaction is not the place to debate the whys and wherefores of an estimate given in good faith before the broken crankshaft was found. Please consider, before writing to The Journal, the possibility of resolving your disagreement with the party concerned. Reputable businesses have a procedure for handling complaints and Club officers publish their addresses in The Journal so that they can be contacted. Around the Compass Ian Caswell has volunteered to add Around the Compass to his portfolio. For simplicity, please send entries to both Diary of Events and Around the Compass to the Diary address on page 3, with either Diary or Compass as the subject of the . My thanks to Ian for filling in the gap. In Conclusion I was delighted to receive last week a letter from a member who took the trouble to give a new Editor some feedback on the content of The Journal. One of the points he made was that tales of members holidays form the majority of the content. The majority of articles I have for publication are travelogues so how about a few more technical contributions before I run out of them? BMW Club Journal August

President s Platform Had a nice ride out the other weekend, when I went down to St Mary s Loch to meet and chat with Gary Smith, an old friend from the States, who was being shown around a few UK roads by Phil Knight before they both went off to Belgium. Garry has written a number of articles for the Journal over some ten years, the last, about fasteners and their use on BMW bikes, some six months ago. In the early 2000s a group called TARTS (Trans Atlantic Rider Trading and Sharing) was formed. I was introduced to them by Keith Wills (The National Membership Secretary before me, that would be just after the war!) and Gary offered to put me up with B&B for a few days. He also checked out my riding ability before offering the loan of a bike. He lent me a K75 with screen and I covered 2500 miles over a period of about 8 days, with Keith Wills on a borrowed K1100LT and Brian and Lavern on his trusted 600/6. We started out tour from Pittsburgh, and visited the AMA museum, the Corvette museum, The Harley Davidson facility in York, Dolly Partons town of Parrotsville, The Parkway whistling On the blue ridge Mountains of Virginia from Laurel and Hardy and the infamous Deals Gap with 112 corners in 10 miles. I just couldn t get past Brian, every time I drew alongside, I had to fall back into line astern to negotiate the next corner. We all did the MOA National at Charleston, in 2003 where 7000 members attended and 3 bikes were raffled. They do it in a bigger way out there. Al Ansor and Garry presented a lecture at that event on dismantling the oil head and explained the modifications that had been developed for that engine, which went down very well. While in the main hall a Northern Irish voice shouted out Dick a couple of times before I reacted and turned around and found it was Leslie I believe, from the Northern Irish Section. Just goes to show what a small world it is. We finished that holiday off by spending a couple of days in Washington DC. Continuing with my ride out to St Mary s lock. I was returning home north of Dalwinnie on the A9 when I stopped to see if I could help some Germans stopped in a bad place just short of a lay-by. So first of got them all safely into the lay-by, then started to look at the problem. One of the riders on a circa GS had a dead battery and later it transpired the generator relay had failed as well. The time now was about 18:00 hrs so I said stay there and I ll be back in a short while. Anyway I came back in the car with the trailer on, just in case the battery wasn t the complete answer, but it was and they rode off to their booked lodgings in Muir of Ord leaving me with a donated bottle of BECHEROVKA Firewater at 38% vol. That day saw me cover about 600 miles on the K1200GT, a real mile muncher. The Germans also sent me a cheque to pay for the battery a couple of days later. I always hope that when I or someone else does a good deed like this that the same thing will happen to a member of our club, when they are abroad and require help. It happens. 9 Torque Reaction Excellent Service My good lady and I decided to take our K1200LT out to the Norfolk Broads for a few days and returning home on Tuesday 8th June we had the misfortune to get caught on what can only be described as a monsoon like downpour in Norwich. Coincidentally the K stuck in fouth gear and the headlamp bulb blew. A quick bit of data entry on the Navigator soon found us at the service reception desk of Lind Motorrad, Norwich where we appeared like drowned rats recounting our faults and asking if it would be possible for someone to take a look. To cut a long story short we were treated to the best customer service I have ever encountered anywhere. Unlimited tea and coffee and after about one and a half hours work on the bike, with faults fixed, we were told it was free of charge. These days it is all too to easy to slate corporate entities for doing their utmost to get their hands on our hard earned cash, but here was oustanding service from a BMW Motorrad dealer, FOC too. Fantastic service. Thanks. Graham Pollock, Huntingdon A little artytickle for you to ponder over Have you ever wondered what the actual horse power and or the torque of your trusted steed really is? Well here s some thing to get your head round on those rainy days in summer, like from Monday to Sunday!!! To calculate horse power, the formula is:- Torque x RPM divided by 5252 = Horse Power. Please send all submissions for September s Torque Reaction to Paul Nadin before August 5th Details on page 3 To calculate torque, the formula is:- (HPx5252) x RPM = Torque. So now you will know what the wee beasty does, and be able to compare notes and even explain it to dearly beloved, whom I am sure she is going to be really appreciative of the knowledge, and thus fully understand why at times she has to hang of for dear life!!! (N.B. When you feel two feet under your arm pits it s probably time to throttle back a bit, before you actually do get throttled!) T Upside Down Tyke, Bradford of course! Peage Motorways I have just returned from a visit to relatives who live in France. Having not been there for 2 or 3 years I used the motorways as the quickest way to cover many miles, and made the following disturbing discoveries which, I think would be worth passing on to our members before they fall into the trap. The visit to France, which entailed long journeys at high speeds in the car, brought me up against two changes in French traffic regulations, the first of which cannot be avoided. All vehicles must carry enough high visibility tabards/jackets to kit out the number of occupants. In case of an accident involving the vehicle, everyone must don a high-vis jacket as he/she leaves the vehicle, if capable of so doing. If you are stopped by the police for some reason, they can demand to see the jackets which must be in the passenger compartment and not in the boot, as must your driving licence, vehicle documents etc. How much of this regulation applies to motorcyclists is for you to find out if you are stopped or involved in an accident. A long- BMW Club Journal August
standing French traffic regulation of which you may be unaware is that it is an offence not to stop and render aid if you come across an accident. Add these to your warning triangle and replacement light bulb kit! As motorcyclists try to avoid peage motorways if possible, you may not encounter the latest change in how you pay the fee on some motorways. We have all been used to the little man/lady in the box who takes the ticket you obtained on entering the motorway, puts it in a machine which calculates the charge which you then pay in cash The little man/lady has disappeared from his/her box and has been replaced by the pass obtained by paying in advance or (more likely in your case, as a visitor) by inserting your ticket in the machine and then your credit/debit card The peage routes I used would accept only Visa cards. Mastercards and Visa Electron are not accepted. Very annoying for me, as I have a Mastercard for which the issuing company does not charge for currency conversion when used to purchase goods/services outside the sterling area. Each time I used my Visa card will result in the card company imposing a charge for currency conversion. Sacre bleu! Arthur Brown Mercia Section Watch out Mr Plod is about with his mates from the DVLA I know as soon as you read this you will be trembling in your bike boots! Yeah like me in me fluffy pompom slippers! U don t no the alf of it! It has apparently been decided by the powers that be, that if you have a small number plates, that s too small, on the bike/s, you are now likely to be prosecuted! You and or your bike may also be stripped by The Strippers Dept. of your or its, legal identity personage in a DVLA clampdown, on small undersized, small number plates! This no doubt will also include number plates with letters and number plates with numbers and those with letters and numbers as well? The DVLA have not specified! Are these the people in charge? They can also confiscate your rego number! So at this point you go down the bus station wait for 2 buses, note the rego letters of one of them and the rego numbers of another one. and there s your new rego number! Totally untraceable! (No you must not do that it s naughty!) If you do get pulled you have 28 days to change the small plate to a small plate and then send a photo of the small plate and a note of compliance from an MOT tester so they can see you have changed the small plate for another small plate. You also have to send photos of both the front and rear plate! Umm? Your rego number is not your property as it has been assigned by The Secretary of State, to be able to identify for taxation and law enforcement purposes! So if they take it off you, do the bus thing! No you mustn t do that it s naughty! It would also appear from reports, this pulling you over has already started, MCN 16th June. So there u have it hot off the press / printer or where ever it comes from. T Upside Down Tyke Seat Height Problems I wonder if any other readers have had the same problem as me, and if so, how they overcame it. My wife had a knee replacement operation in January, and has had a few problems since. She now has a bend of around 85 degrees, which means that travel as pillion on my BMW 1200RT is not yet possible as she cannot reach the foot peg, and the physiotherapist does not hold out much hope of more than 90 degree bend in the long 10 BMW Club Journal August 2010
term. I m sure she is not the first, nor will she be the last to have such a problem to solve. I need to make some alterations to the foot peg as I think this would be preferable to changing the seat height. However, any ideas would be most helpful! Kevin Dallow, Staffordshire A Great Big Thank You Although I finished as Vintage and Classic Secretary in April this year, Wendy and I went ahead and organised the 9th Vintage and Classic Rally in Pembrokeshire as it was only a couple of months away. It was at this event that we were truly surprised and rather taken aback! Behind the scenes Register Members had made a collection and after the Saturday evening dinner the new Secretary, Robin Walker, made a presentation on behalf of everyone, so thank you all for your generosity. The picture will grace our living room, so too will the great 69S Bits trophy from the Lincolnshire Lads, and the fund will definitely help the rebuild I m finishing.; Also, as I type this, Wendy is checking the arrangement of the bouquet of flowers Once more many many thanks and we ll see you at the shows and next year s rally in Wales. Malcolm and Wendy McNair Key Dropping Problems? And another remark, this time regarding Chris Halsall s contribution on transponder keys. Good grief! What am I supposed to make of an ignition key which can t stand being dropped on the floor occasionally something which must happen to just about every key in the world? And I can t chase out of my mind another point. Mobile phones, which are stuffed with electronics, survive falls pretty well as a rule John Humbach, Folkestone Deutsch Zwierads I hoped I would be the only person to spot the editorial error in my recent article on the Deutsches Zwierad Museum, where the picture of the IFA B34 two-stroke twin was incorrectly captioned as being a Ratier flat twin, in spite of my original correct caption. I should have known better Uwe Wehring noticed this immediately, and no doubt other members with a keen eye for historical detail will do so too. The IFA B34 was probably the result of the DDR government deciding to combine the motorcycle engineering teams at the BMW Eisenach factory with that of the DKW at Zshopau, the result being a small machine which combined the BMW passion for shaft driven flat twins with that of DKW for twostrokes. If you look at the B34 upside-down forks (nothing in the engineering world is ever new!) you are looking at those of the 125 cc BSA Bantam, a DKW design given to BSA as war reparations, while the cylinder barrels and heads are virtually identical to those of the later 175 cc Bantam, two of which make 350 cc. Mike Fishwick, Daglan, France An editorial slip of the finger. My apologies to Mike and any other readers whose eyebrows were raised by the error. Is This Serious? Not sure if you have heard, but finally the new BMW luxury tourer is going through it s road testing in California. What a bummer of a job that must be! The all new K1600LT, 6 cylinder, 1600 cc engine, (or thereabouts) sits across the frame and not in line, and exhausts through twin silencers, one on each side. The engine torque is claimed at 96 foot/lbs, from just 2000 rpm, with maximum revs of 900 rpm, which should provide for some significant amount of urge / umph progress to be made! BMW Club Journal August
Fuel economy is also claimed to be better, (than what?) and with a dry sump the engine sits low in the frame, and is canted forwards, to keep seat height to the minimum. Overall width for the engine is only 51cm, i.e. 20 inches in proper money! By comparison the 1150 GS motor is around 26/27 inches wide. Given the engine is a six, inertia forces are balanced out, therefore no need for a balance shaft. The chassis is an all alloy one, similar to the K1300 range. No rust then? The oil reservoir is situated in the rear of the crankcases for better access. It also sports a fly by wire throttle! Not sure about this feature, as when you have a noisy pillion there are times when you need to be able to throttle them! No suggested selling price as yet, as it s not due until next year, so we will have to wait and see how much over time Dearly Beloved is going to have to do, so she will be able to buy me one! I wonder if this is the forerunner for an official trike? T Upside Down Tyke, Bradford Helmet Evaluation MCN s recent poll on helmets revealed the following results. 1/. With appreciation for the information of course All about Rallies Re the recent National Rally at Axbridge, I have to agree with Mick Foxwell (July mag) that whilst many thanks to the people who organised it the site wasn t a patch on the one at Moreton in Marsh two years ago. I am told Framlingham was good but didn t attend as Jody was in A and E so please can we have rallies just for BMW club members only. We went to the vintage section rally at Newport Pembs recently. Lovely place, lovely weather and great people; so thanks to Wendy and Malcolm McNair. Re the article by Ray and Mara Smith on their trip to Morocco, that brought back memories of a trip we did 21 years ago on a Kawasaki GTR 1000 plus trailer. We camped down through France and Spain and hotelled it around Morocco. We got down as far as Zagora, the edge of the Sahara, a three week trip. Rider and pillion comfort are one of the best in its class. Handling of such a large bike are surprisingly good and coupled to lower than you would expect running costs, must be a contender for the serious tourers. No. 7. BMW R1200 GS Adventurer 2006 Onwards. 1170cc. 99BHP, 85 foot lbs of torque, Max speed 130MPH. Insurance group 14. Price range from 5325 to 8850 new. Not for those of a short stature or the faint hearted as this bike has attitude!. Coupled with a 33 litre fuel tank you can easily be in to the hilly bits in Europe faster than you thought possible. One consideration you have to take on board is its weight, which is approaching a quarter of a ton, and then add you and yours and luggage, you really need to be confident. Having said that, once rolling it s in a class of its own, and surprisingly easy to handle. Down side is the stock seat height of 910mm built up boot soles may be required! There are companies out there who can re-sculpture your seat to suit you personally. On a personal note I have used Seat Works near Bradford who met my requirements, and as such enhanced my riding pleasure considerably. No connection, just a satisfied customer. There are also inordinate amounts of personalising accessories available from numerous suppliers, many of whom advertise in our Journal, so shop around. My only criticism of the bike would be the clear lenses on the front and rear indicator pods, which when the sun is shining in to these it is almost impossible to see only the flashing bulb. It s down to you to spec orange lenses. No. 6. BMW R1200S (06-07) 1170cc. 122BHP. 83 foot lbs of torque. Maximum speed 148MPH. Insurance group 13. Price range 5999 to This one, given its potential speed capabilities, puts in it into a fairly limited scenario. As a road bike in the UK it doesn t really fit in personal opinion of course. As a road / track day bike it obviously has considerable capabilities. Even in Europe on the autobahns it would be, given the limited wind protection, useable but for how many miles? At 60mph you re covering a mile a minute, which according to my calculations is around 29 yards per second, so 2 times this is 58 yards per second, 3 times this is 87 yards so with a reaction time of say 3 seconds to brake, you ve covered around 90 yards, at the point you actually start braking. If you can stop in say 10 seconds you ve covered approximately half a mile! Not a lot of good if dumbly bum has pulled out in front of you, and steering round him/her/it is not a very real option, so you re up whatsit s creek! But given that we are not likely to be 14 BMW Club Journal August 2010

travelling at 148MPH, we would not have our licence for very much longer, so apart from a track day bike, where exactly does this one fit in? I don t know, not going there, prefer my bits attached to my body not splattered all over the place! As an adage I skidded on mud some 40 odd years ago, so did several others, same corner, same day, and I had internal injuries. In the hospital ward there were 3 of us all from the same corner. Sadly the other two died. I was out of it for almost 2 years. Prosecutions are still pending, yeah!!! So, albeit a very nice bike, not my choice No. 5 Honda GL Onwards. 1832cc.116BHP. 123 foot lbs of torque. Maximum speed 120mph. Insurance group 15. Price range At this sort of money this has to be one of the most expensive, every day motor cycles around. It too is gargantuan, and affords luxury motorcycling at a totally different level. In addition to its ability to eat miles, this by its occupants is in some considerable degree of comfort, to say the least. As an all up mile eating, luxurious travelling bike, there is little else in the market place to compete with it. The luxurious accommodation has to be the epitome of luxurious 2 wheeled travel. Quite how good it is at scratching is for me unknown, but having both passed and been passed by Wings, they seem to be able to do the business. Admittedly not every ones cup of motorbike but given the numbers that can be seen out on the roads there has to be some thing about them that people like. The Wing Dings social side of their club is by its often seen presence very active where-ever you go, be it the UK or over in the EU In addition to the solos I have also 16 BMW Club Journal August 2010
seen 3 wheeled versions, trikes, and many towing trailers. But never tried one so not in a position to comment other than how much will a bigger garage cost then? No. 4. Honda GL nwards. 1520cc.100 BHP. 110 foot lbs of torque. Maximum speed of 106 mph. Insurance group 15. Price range 5950 to Possibly the fore-runner to the luxury full dress tourers that we now take for granted, this most likely was one of the first of this style of bike and initially competed with by many other manufacturers, most of whom subsequently gave up. It remained in production for in excess of 10 years, and was then replaced by the flat 6 engine of the later models. The paramount difference in this class of bike is the extraordinary luxurious standard of accommodation for both driver and passenger, which still remains to day. So if this is your cup of motorbike tea, there are second hand ones out there to be had for quite reasonable pocket damage! No. 3. BMW K1200S cc.165BHP. 96 foot lbs of torque. Maximum speed of 160mph. Insurance group 16. Price range 3695 to This bike was the beginning of BMW s previous reluctance to fit engines across the frame and launched the 4 cylinder motor that we all now take for granted, except us dinosaurs who still run twins! With low down torque, a good mid-range and more power than enough at the top end of the rev range, this was the beginning of the fours that we have now. Given its top speed of 160mph it is reasonable to assume it was intended for the autobahns. With its modernistic styling and looks it brought a whole new style to Bee Emms. It has to be a potential classic of the future and possibly a cheap alternative to the rice burners. No. 2. BMW R1200RT 2005 onwards. 1170cc. 110BHP.85 foot lbs of torque. Maximum speed of 135MPH. Insurance group 11. Price range 4995 to Of all of the possible options in top of the range motor cycles this one has to be in there. In addition to being the comfortable long distance tourer, it is also quite capable in the right hands to scratch as good as most others out there. Not every one s cup of motorbike, but when you consider you could pick up a used one for not very much money (even if it s only a summer bike given it s multiplicity of uses) it s got be in with the best. With the current version having an all new 110 BHP twin cam motor, long distances in comfort are just a part of the comfort afforded by this model. The SE version also sports a heated seat and hand grips and an optional radio kit to boot. No.1. in the definitive list of the top 10 Shafties. So what is the number one? Surprise. It s the Triumph Rocket111 (05 0nwards). 2294cc.120BHP.147 foot lbs of torque. Maximum speed of 135MPH. Insurance group 17. Prices range from 5999 to 11,400. Of all of the options for the best bike a naked muscle bike has to be some thing very different, and given the specs of the Triumph it would seem to be entirely in a class of its own. It certainly is a looker and could compete easily with similar naked bikes. So is this a harp back to British bikes are best? Is there too much cleaning and polishing given the amount of chrome etc which many of us still remember! Or is it a poke in the eye for The Harley s, etc? Either way, both are distinctively different in their own rites and are a considerable difference from the many high revving Japanese bikes currently on the market. If you were to look at this another way, BMW Club Journal August
would you consider a 3 litre bike? (Would you consider a 3 litre car?). The weight alone would put most people off. The lack of weather protection (given our climate) would not help either, and as most of us will have been through the spit and polish days would this be something you would consider? As a second fine summer days only bike it might be an option, and with modern lightweight water proof riding wear etc water proofing ourselves is not that difficult. But I think for almost twelve grand it s not likely to be going on my list at Christmas. Andy Stork, Bradford An Exception I must take exception to Stewart Lothian s comment at the end of his first paragraph think Volvo pulling out from side road 20 yards ahead. As a trained IAM observer I have found that it is not cars that pull out from side roads on their own they are usually driven by someone half asleep. Why pick on Volvo drivers? Volvos are safe cars and usually driven by safety conscious drivers. I am more aware of the dangers posed by arrogant drivers sat behind German cars (BMW, Audi and Mercedes can I say that in a BMW club magazine?). Or am I just as prejudiced as Stewart? If a car is at the junction of a side road look at the driver not the make of car. It will probably give you a better indication of what they are going to do. By the way I drive a Japanese car but do like Volvos. David Leppard, Mid Wales Having had a badly-driven Volvo give me 10 yards to lose 30 mph, my choice of make was not accidental. 19 Club Business General Secretary Dave Cooper gives a synopsis of the National Committee meeting held on the 12th of June. President s opening remarks The correct interpretation of the voting procedure was accepted at the AGM by the Membership and the three National Officers elected received what amounts to a vote of confidence i.e. an almost unanimous vote in favour. The Membership questioned the payment of Officers Utilities bills and also paying for National Officers to attend events at the cost of the club. Both of the above need re-visiting at this meeting. The membership also held a straw poll which showed their disapproval of the discussion of club business on the forum. The new editor (Stewart Lowthian of the Northern Section) is up and running, ably assisted by Jim Bruce. Both are now on holiday, and Jim is doing the Journal whilst on holiday with a new laptop and software purchased to cover this period. ( You may not know but Jim backs up the Editor and also does all the billing for the adverts). Stewart is doing a two-day course on Adobe InDesign when he returns from holiday. After the AGM we were also without a National Social Sec and Mark Dutton the East Anglia Social Sec has volunteered to fill that slot, thank you Mark; he has also asked Reg Moule to assist him (Reg Moule (very capable ) was the National Social Sec when I was a teenager. Anyway thanks to the both of you Mark and Reg. The other new man voted on at the AGM is Jim Lepley, our new National Treasurer. He has been getting on with the job and has a lot of new sensible ideas such as getting internet banking (Read Only) for the Standing Order Administrator which are sure to help the club. Keith Wills will be over the moon with that one; also getting the Section Treasurers to sing from the same sheet. I ll not steal any more of Jim s thunder. The Membership Secretary s position is still being covered by Liz Sandland until Les Madge takes over when he has finished building his house. After that Liz has agreed to carry on developing the BMWCLUBUK. Net intranet system for the club and be the Membership Assistant to Les. Finally the National Officers and the NCM are now working together better than I have ever seen and my hope is that this year we cover more ground and achieve more than we have ever done. Thanks for your work, help and goodnaturedness in pushing this club forward. Club administration The controversial decision to cover the expenses of national officers if they attend the national rallies was rescinded. Officers may only claim expenses incurred in relation to business meetings and to carrying out the business of the club. The voucher system both for membership and for regalia has been discontinued and the money allocated to this diverted to additional capitation for the Sections. Together with the increase BMW Club Journal August
previously agreed, the capitation allowance now stands at 4.50 per full member and will be paid for all members registered this year. This represents almost a 30% increase in payments to the Sections, and the National Committee hope that members will benefit directly from the additional funds. Job descriptions for the President, Treasurer, and Social Secretary have been approved. The National Committee is looking at how to access expertise on Health and Safety matters. Events The Committee heard that bookings are proceeding well for the Summer Rally in Ulster and that the hotel accommodation is already half full. The Spring National Rally will continue in view of the support gained at this year s. The Club is researching the availability of a smaller site which can be booked for exclusive Club use and the dates are 27 th to 30 th May The AGM 2011 will be at Ushaw College, Durham, 15 th to 17 th April 2011, where there will be plenty of room on site both for those booking rooms and for campers. The 60 th anniversary rally will be held on 26 th to 29 th August 2011 at the Fire Service College at Morton-in-Marsh. Over 30 potential venues were researched, and this venue scored highest in terms of capacity, location and quality of accommodation. The target attendance is 600 although the site will accommodate greater numbers. It was agreed to book the site and that the organisers would run a 60 th anniversary special logo competition. The committee agreed to support both the Hippo and Rhino winter events with a grant of 600 each. Website The new website is nearing completion and is currently stalled for administrative reasons. The President, General Secretary and Webmaster will meet to resolve the problems. The committee set aside a sum of up to 2,500 for the project. Forum The committee heard that certain postings on the forum had been the subject of considerable criticism at the AGM. A wide ranging discussion followed and the committee came to the view that the forum is a useful asset for members to discuss any subject of interest, but that the business of the Club could not be conducted there. The existing rules are considered entirely adequate to ensure satisfactory standards. The point was also made that the contact details of all National Committee members are published in the Journal and that information was therefore readily available. 20 BMW Club Journal August 2010
Promoting the Club The committee reviewed its previous decision to offer half price membership at promotional events and after discussion, came to the conclusion that a coherent strategy is needed. A sub-committee was formed, Peter Dunn (Vice President) Cliff Batley (Vice President) Jim Lepley (Treasurer) and Robin Walker (Vintage and Classic Register Secretary), to research ways and means of promoting the Club, recruiting new and retaining existing members. The committee decided not to support the NEC Show this year, since the measurable benefits do not justify the considerable cost involved. For the time being, it was felt that it would be more effective to support a range of smaller promotional events. 150 was allocated for 3 such events in East Anglia. Brainstorm During a break from agenda matters, a brainstorm session was held in which all present were asked in turn to state how the Club should develop. An overview of the responses indicates that the committee generally feel the primary aims are to promote friendship and the social aspects and to ensure useful support for the Sections; however, a closer study of the comments is a job for another day. Summary of decisions Sub-Committee Promotion of Club/ Retention of members:- unanimous. Approval of Officers Job Descriptions:- unanimous. Seek expertise in Health and Safety matters:- unanimous. Appointment of officers and assistants, approve list:- unanimous. Rescind officers expenses payment re: national rallies:- unanimous. Proceed with Fire Service College for 60 th Rally:- unanimous. Amendment to the above to delete the capitation increase:- For 5 Against 9 Abstaining 1. Set aside a sum of 2,500 for website development:- unanimous. Approve Ushaw College for AGM 2011:- unanimous. The meeting opened at am and closed at 5.15pm. BMW Club Journal August
The Sixtieth Birthday Graham Parker announces a magnificent event. The BMW Club will be 60 years old in 2011 and a team of volunteers has been assembled to organise and run a celebration event. The proposed date is the August Bank Holiday weekend in 2011 and the location is the Fire Service College (FSC) in Moretonin-the-Marsh, set in the Cotswolds so in the middle of the country. The celebration will be open to all Club members and their families. It is intended to be our big bash for the year and we want to make it an event to be remembered. The event will be funded by a combination of central BMW Club funds and event entry fees. The venue is the most important element to the event. We require a location that can provide camping and accommodation all on one site and this venue will do just that. Food will be available on a pay as you go basis for breakfast, lunch, evening meal and a late night snack bar, with free tea and coffee at set times. The accommodation is of a high standard. The event will be run primarily by the FSC site staff thus enabling club members free time to enjoy the weekend, however some duties will still need to be covered by ourselves. Most of this will be on Friday to book in members and marshall the site. As plans progress more information on this will become available. The weekend would include the usual rally fare of ride outs and we are hoping that local club members will step forward and help by leading motorcycle runs. We are also looking to have advanced and novice rider training, concourse events and competitions, use of the swimming pool and sauna and demonstrations from the FSC. We will invite BMW GB to attend with their demonstration fleet and other motorcycle related businesses to the event. If any businesses who advertise within The Journal would like to be on site, then please contact the team. No business charges will be made to anyone who wishes to come to this event as we want you to come and add colour to this event. There will be tickets available for the Celebration and all Club members will have an equal chance to apply for them. The entry fee will include for camping, or accommodation costs and all events, We have been able to secure single accommodation without the usual cost penalty and have plenty of double accommodation at very reasonable costs. If we have a raffle with a major prize or prizes this could be with an additional purchase of raffle ticket or tickets. We look forward to your comments on how such a raffle should be run / sold and if you the 22 BMW Club Journal August 2010
