The module will cover periods from the Classical period up to the middle of the 19th century. Students will be able to use appropriate terminology to discuss and write about art in an academic context by the end of the module. The programme will cover the following periods : prehistoric art, the art of Mesopotamia, the art of ancient Egypt, the Classical period (Greek & Roman art), early Christian art, Byzantine art, Romanesque art, the Gothic period, art of the Renaissance, the Baroque and Rococo periods, Romantic art, formalise and realism. They should also be familiar with the main criteria when evaluating an artistic activity. They will be familiarised with the basic laws of functioning of the institutions that popularise the art. Module outcomes: By the end of the course the students should acquire the skill to comment on the current artistic events. They should be able to express their own views on contemporary art. They should be able to popularise the art and artistic activities by using various forms and strategies of promotion. Creating compositions on the surface with the use of traditional painting means and tools of study character; still life, interior, portrait, self-portrait,landscape,etc. Realisation of at least two tasks (beyond class requirements) proposed by the tutor. These should be of study character. Watercolour techniques in painting and the introduction to the techniques of oil painting. Module outcomes: Eliminating obvious technical mistakes and bad painting habits from the past. The ability to carry out observations and use them in the creation of students own work. Freedom in the use of the acquired artistic means and methods. Zenon Polus Module Description: This module aims to develop the students drawing skills as a way of expressing themselves artistically. The classes will begin by focussing on drawing objects and by doing still lifes. Elements of composition will be developed, too, including line, point, composition and technique. In the 2nd year, in addition to continuing to practise and develop the skills introduced in the first year, the students will be encouraged to begin work on their subjects of their own choice. Module outcome: By the end of the module, the students will be able to produce drawings which demonstrate an awareness of line, form and composition. Principal Lecturer: Radosław Czarkowski, PHd Module Description: Active observation and its role in producing art, together with analysing reality, nature, landscapes, and working with models are all focussed on on the course. This focus should help students to develop their ability to recognise the role and use of light and optical effects in a piece of art. The ability of the students to express themselves appropriately in discussion of art also plays a part. Module outcomes: The students should be able to prepare an appropriate format and kind of stretcher. They should acquire the basic drawing techniques such as: drawing in pencil, charcoal, ink, watercolour. This is to provide each course participant with the opportunity to acquaint themselves with each other, each other s work and interests, particularly in relation to graphic design. Points ECTS: 6 Principal lecturer: Professor Piotr Szurek The main aim of the classes is to familiarise the students with basic rules that are applied in the art of graphics. The students are familiarised with such basic techniques as: dry point, etching, aquatint, soft varnish, flake and they are expected to acquire the skill of mixing these techniques. It is also of great importance for the students to acquire the skill of printing. Students have to realize that printing does not necessarily have to be a mere mechanical activity but may be an element of an artistic creation as well. One of the aims of the workshops is to give the students an opportunity of freedom and autonomy in their artistic research. The students should get a deep insight into technological knowledge, combine different techniques and even carry out experiments in order to find the right means of expressions that will enable them to carry out their own creative aspirations. The students produce their works based on the designs that have been consulted on and accepted by their supervisor. The range of classes and subjects is prepared with regard to the students individual predispositions. Module outcomes: The students should acquire the knowledge of plate printing and master the skills of graphics. The lab classes develop the students artistic sensibility and, most importantly, they initiate the students own process of artistic creation. To get a pass, the students are expected to participate in the workshops, cooperate with the lab tutors. They should be independent and creative. The students artistic and technical aspects of works will be evaluated. It is essential to complete the number of graphics that has been established (two graphics within one term. One work should be made with the use of dry technique and one with the etching technique). Creative linking of traditional and digital media. Preparation of the material for digital print. The students should develop their skills of creative thinking and solving problems in the area of individual design work. Besides, they should be able to seek individual design solutions taking into consideration aesthetical and utilizable functions of graphic objects. The content, i.e. an idea as well as a form of graphic delivery and its completion are of highest importance. Module outcome: The students should acquire the skill of practical application of the analysis and synthesis of oral and graphic bulletin. The students are expected to develop their awareness in the area of sculpture and be able to use it in practise. They should also be able to develop their own creativity and artistic individuality and reflect on it. They should improve their artistic awareness and skills through experiencing various techniques and forms in sculpture. Presenting a sculpture as an individual form of expression, based on continuous experience connected with getting to know oneself and the world. The classes are to inspire the students to make their individual creative decisions, to form their own ideas, concepts and convictions. The world in photography depicts and interprets the contemporary times in its best possible ways- omnipresent dominance of picture and sudden development of technology. Accordingly, the lab programme offers two ideas: photography as an independent (with its own tradition) means of expression and photography as an interdisciplinary means of artistic expression. The latter will be used as a tool to enable and broaden the means and ways of photography in various areas of output. Module outcome: The students will be more aware of the contribution of various elements when building the meanings. This will be achieved through technical registering of a picture. The students have a possibility to interpret the programme through analogue, digital recording. Technique and technology: camera use and handling instructions/analogue recording: structure and its functions, instructions (photographic means of expression) studio classes (lighting-the role of lighting in photography), scale of focus, problem of macrodimension) techniques of developing negatives in black and white; characteristic features of negative materials classes in the dark room (the regularity of black and white processing-multigrade filtration; special techniques consultations with the help of Adobe Photoshop programme Attendance. Points ECTS: 1 The module familiarises the students with basic issues from an area of digital graphics and graphic visualisation, where students have an opportunity to develop their skills in combining manual workshop abilities in painting, drawing, and graphics with the popular medium computer and the new possibilities offered by graphic software. The growing awareness of the possibility to use this medium broadens the opportunities for the subjective creation process and develops students imagination thus giving the students a chance to use this practical tool in the use of computer pictures in their artistic and educational realisations. Seeking individual attitudes within this area of media gives an opportunity to obtain the most interesting effects in students artistic output as well as to develop their abilities to consciously and practically use processed digital picture. Module outcomes: The students should be able to make practical use of digital picture in their artistic and educational realisations. They should also be able to consciously combine manual workshop skills (in drawing, painting and graphics) with an increasingly popular medium computer. Further development of individual drawing skills based on the freely selected medium. Preparation of a fully conscious, individual artistic work including students ideas skills and facilities. A License Diploma will be the final outcome. During the preparation for the Diploma, the students are to be able to elaborate a topic and complete it consciously. The students are also expected to show their knowledge of artistic techniques and the ability to use them in the best possible logical and consistent way. The educational methods are based on the open group or individual discussions, on monitoring of the process of diploma realization, and supervision of the substantial and artistic qualities. Module outcome: License graduates should be able to present individual artistic ideas, show their awareness of the media and techniques used during the realisation of their works. They should also be able to present a logical, consistent and clear creation of their own designs. Photography as an interdisciplinary means of artistic expression. This area concerns photography used as a tool enabling and broadening the means and ways of representation in different areas of artistic creativity. Students should deepen their artistic self-awareness and develop their abilities to talk confidently about photography through active participation in the classes.
