Palka family 1-25 Club Winner for the 18th Week - #227 Brian Kelly SHARING OUR BLESSINGS - January 31, 2011 Weekly $4619.63 (incl. $294.63 in loose money); Diocesan Obligations $10; Fuel $195. For your information, the income for the 5 weeks of January 2011 came to $26,298.45; the income for the same period in 2010 came to $23,427.75, representing an overall increase in donations of 12%. A word of gratitude to those who are living up to their Sharing our Blessings commitment. The last two weeks of January have shown a substantial drop in offerings, perhaps due to the inclement weather. This drop in income negatively affects our budget. Stewardship Note: Thus says the Lord: Share your bread with the hungry, shelter the oppressed and the homeless, (Isaiah 58:7). No matter how busy we are or how tight our budget might be, we are all called to have compassion for those who are less fortunate than us. We hear these instructions in both the Old and New Testament. In fact, Jesus tells us that we will be judged by how well we reach out to those who were hungry, thirsty, homeless, sick, grieving or in need of our compassion in any way. FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - February 6, 2011 Light shines through the darkness for the upright. Psalm 112:4 God s Call. The person who has been saved, who has heard the good news of Salvation, still lives in an unsaved world, a world sadly oblivious to the presence of God. Today s readings outline how the disciple is present in the world. The outline begins with Isaiah: Share your bread...shelter the oppressed...clothe the naked (Isaiah 58:7). Those who hear the word of salvation are not insensitive to the urgent needs of others. Then Paul reminds his flock that he brought Christ to them not in eloquence or wisdom, but by being with them in the weakness and fear of their daily lives (1 Corinthians 2:3). Finally, Jesus tells his disciples to go out into the gloom and darkness of the streets of the world and let God s light shine through their good deeds. The second collection this weekend will be taken for the Diocesan Obligations Next weekend the second collection will be taken for the Utility and Energy Costs DEVOTION TO THE DIVINE MERCY This Sunday afternoon the Devotion to the Divine Mercy will be prayed at 3 p.m. Jesus promised that: Souls who spread the honor of My mercy I shield through their entire life as a tender mother her infant, and at the hour of death I will not be a Judge for them, but the Merciful Savior. I ask that all of us will come as a family to pray for special graces needed in our lives. SCHOOL NEWS Catholic Schools Week in Review. The first day of the celebration of Catholic Schools Week gathered parents, children, faculty, Home School Association and the School Board to St. Joseph Basilica where Bishop George Rueger celebrated the liturgy. During the homily Bishop Rueger said that St. Joseph School is the best place to begin Catholic Schools Week Celebrtion becausse of its educational excellence, accomplishments and a tradition of commitment of many generations of parishioners to the school. His words proved to be true when after Communion the Bishop presented the Partners in Education award to the recipients who represented the 4 th generation of students of St. Joseph School, Mrs. Lisa Sabacinski and Mrs. Angie Siegmund. Although each generation of students is concerned about intellectual achievements and formation of character, nevertheless the methods of obtaining that goal is drastically different for the current youth. Technology revolutionized the way we learn and teach. Promethean interactive boards which are used in every classroom, accelerated reader quizzes available on line, math and science which engages the students to find creative solutions, all have an enormous impact on the teachers and the pupils. For this reason, St. Joseph School is different than it was ten years ago. You cannot understand the digital generations without emails, internet, text messaging, Youtube etc. The principal of the school, Mr. Cushing, in a letter to the parents, wrote: Education at the present time to be

Page 3 February 6, 2011-6 luty 2011 r. successful needs to use the tools the young people can easily relate to if you want to win the future and be compatible with the world s leading schools. We are pleased that St. Joseph School with all its technology is indeed in touch with the needs of contemporary youth. We are preparing the students to be effective and inventive players on the stage of a global audience of education and economy. From the 2011 Partners in Education: Thank you so much for the honor of receiving the Partners in Education award. Coaching is our passion. We, as coaches, help the players learn to love the game of basketball. Along the way, we also teach life lessons such as working together as a team, building self esteem, and learning to handle both winning and losing. These are the things that make coaching and working with the players so special to us. Lisa Sabacinski and Angie Siegmund Comments from Principal Mr. Donald Cushing. Reports from St. Joseph School are that Catholic Schools Week (despite severe winter weather) was a huge success again ths year. Bishop Rueger was warmly welcomed to the school after the 9:30 a.m. Mass and cafeteria social, and the good bishop acknowledged I always enjoy coming to St. Joseph School/Basilica. It is among one of my favorite spots to visit. Everyone is always so welcoming and cordial. What a great way for St. Joseph School to begin Catholic Schools Week 2011. Registration for the 2011-12 school year officially began last week during Catholic Schools Week. Registration packets are ready for distribution from the School Office. Registrations are rolling admissions/ongoing as in the past years, as long as there are vacancies. We are very proud of our Pre-K program and the ever increasing enrollment of new students. St. Joseph School will be promoting a special program this coming Monday evening, February 7 th, at 6:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria. A veteran lawyer from the Worcester District Attorney s office will lecture on School Bullying and Updated Bullying Legislation to the entire membership of the Home School Association (parents and family members of students of SJS). Students whose parents attend will be able to earn an outof-school dress day for Friday, February 11 th. Also, on next Wednesday, February 9th, the same member of the DA s office will make two presentations to the faculty and student body of St. Joseph School on bullying. The first session will be at 9:00 a.m. for grades K-4 (faculty and students) and the second session at 10 a.m. for grades 5-8 (faculty and students). Partners in Education winners for 2011, Lisa Sabacinski and Angie Siegmund, were recognized Sunday morning by Bishop Rueger. The tip of the fedora to both of you! The St. Joseph Basilica Knights of Columbus Annual Free Throw Shooting Championship has been postponed to this coming Tuesday, February 8 th at 6:30 p.m. at Park Avenue School. On a personal side, I am anxiously looking forward to returning to the corridors of St. Joseph School probably after February vacation. FEBRUARY BIRTHDAYS Best wishes to the following parishioners who are celebrating their 90's birthdays in February: Christine Charniak, Jeanette Godzik, Anna Kozlowski, Frances Lacky, and Marion Winters. In addition to being the most misspelled month, February is a misfit of days from leap year (every 4 th year) to its standard 28 days in a collection of 30. February s name comes from the Latin word februum, which translates to purification. The February birthstone is the amethyst. The consensus from jewelers and crystal healers is that this radiant purple stone brings on a sense of calm and serenity. Violet is the flower of the month. Many celebrities share the February birthday with our parishioners including Christie Brinkley, Farrah Fawcett, Ronald Reagan, Babe Ruth,Vanna White, Mario Andretti and many others. May you enjoy your birthday with the stars and let sunshine shine upon these snowy days and may you enjoy a happy and healthful day! ST. JOSEPH POLISH WOMEN S CLUB Due to the rash of inclement weather and in concern for the safety of our members, there will be NO MONTHLY MEETING of the Women s Club for the month of February.
