They make up 25% Leiodidae known from all Poland. 26 species were found in this area for the first time. Key Words: Coleoptera, Leiodidae, military range, Western Poland Biedrusko military range is located north of Poznań. According to the division of Poland into regions adopted by the authors of part 23 of Catalogus faunae Poloniae, the study area is located in the Wielkopolsko-Kujawska Plain. A bigger part of the range is a protected landscape area established in 1995. The specific trait of the studied area is low degree of antropogenic transformation and its mosaic habitats. This results directly form the fact that the range is not easilly accessible for the local people, as for over 90 years it has been used as a military range. A big part of the range is covered with woods, among which the most interesting are ashalder complexes Fraxino-Alnetum, alder woods with currant bushes Ribo nigri- Alnetum and light oak forests Potentillo albae-quercetum. The most common form in the deforested areas of the range are vast complexes of broom as well as xerothermic and sand turfs. Also blackthorn and hawthorn bushes are typical of open areas, while in the valleys rushes and willows can be found. The coleopterofauna of the range in Biedrusko was subject of a research carried out in 1998 2004. It covered the family Leiodidae Fleming, 1821, which according to Lawrence & Newton (1995) is represented in Poland by 133 species (Leiodinae 66, Coloninae 19, Cholevinae 46, Platypsyllinae 2) (Burakowski et al. 1978, 2000, Majewski 2001, Ruta 2003). Earlier studies treat the subfamilies of the Leiodidae as separate families. The beetles of this group are among the least known of coleopterofauna groups in Poland both in terms of biology and occurrence. Most information about their occurence is a few dozens of years old
130 S. Konwerski, P. Sienkiewicz and must be corroborated with new material (Szymczakowski 1961, 1969a, 1969b, Burakowski et al. 1978, Nunberg 1987, Szołtys 1996). Due to varied biology of Leiodidae, the researchers used different methods of catching the beetles, especially Barber traps, light trapping and sieving the forest floor and touchwood. So far the sources have quoted 8 species from Leiodinae subfamily residing in Biedrusko range (Jałoszyński & Konwerski 2002). During the research further 26 species have been found from the following subfamilies: Leiodinae 5, Cholevinae 15, Coloninae 6. Most of them are very rarely seen and they are known in Poland from few places. Below there is a list of Leiodidae species known from the range of Biedrusko presented. In Poland known from few dispersed spots, on Wielkopolsko-Kujawska Plain last noted in one spot over 90 years ago (Burakowski et al. 1978). The research on Leiodidae carried out in the military range Biedrusko has confirmed high environmental value of this area. Over 25% of the beetles of this family occurring in Poland have been found there. Such concentration of rare beetles whose biology and ecology are still poorly known may be an incentive for further research. Acknowledgements The authors would like to thank Mr Henryk Szołtys, MSc. Eng. and Mr Daniel Kubisz, MSc. for checking the marking of some species and Ms Urszula Walczak, PhD, for some specimens used in this study.
