6 ABOUT THE PROJECT
To plunge into history Not everybody knows, but as many as five kings of Poland were crowned in Gniezno. Therefore, these coronations are referred to by numerous cyclical events organised in the city. They include the Royal Coronation, which in 2012 gathered there nearly 16,000 spectators and almost 500 reconstructors in St. Adalbert Square. Currently, it is one of the most prestigious reconstruction events in Poland, next to the Battle of Grunwald, the Siege of Malbork and the Festival of Slavs and Vikings in Wolin. On the last weekend of July, the Gniezno square changes into a bustling and colourful Piast town, offering a multitude of attractions: starting with the staging of historical events, through the presentations of the knights struggles, a medieval feast and the presentation of medieval crafts, ending with plebeian games, competitions and concerts. A fixed item on the agenda is the Gniezno Town Golden Pouch Archery Tournament, and the highlight of the event is the reconstruction of a royal coronation. Everybody who takes part in these events can travel to bygone times for a moment and explore history in a different way, other than going through the pages of schoolbooks.
