http://www.drvc.org, and by clicking the Synod of Bishops 2015 icon on the homepage DRVC is sponsoring a pilgrimage for the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia. Information about this trip and the agenda for each day can be found at drvc-faith.org. Registration must take place by March 5th. LENTEN PRACTICES Catholics are encouraged in Lent to cultivate three religious practices: fasting and abstinence, prayer and almsgiving. What does it mean to fast? Fasting is more than simply self control around food. Spiritual fasting enhances our hunger for God. Fasting is one of the most ancient practices in Lent. When do we fast? Catholics between the ages of 18 and 59 are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This means we do not eat food between meals. We eat one full meal a day and the other two meals should not total that one full meal. What does it mean to abstain? To abstain is to refrain from eating meat as an act of penance and sacrifice. When do we abstain? Catholics abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. All Catholics who have completed their fourteenth year of age are bound by the law of abstinence. What ways do we pray in Lent? Lent is a time to make a conscious effort to pray more and with greater regularity. The celebration of the Eucharist is considered the source and summit of Catholic prayer. Actively preparing for Sunday by reading the Scripture readings ahead of time can be part of one s Lenten discipline. You can find the scripture citations for the next Sunday in the bulletin each week. You can also choose to celebrate Mass more often than just on Sundays. Our weekday masses are at 7 AM and on Saturday mornings at 8 AM. We have added two weekday evening Masses for Lent: on Mondays in English at 6 PM and on Wednesdays in Polish at 6 PM. We have an additional hour of... Adoration on Tuesdays (12 to 2 PM), and Stations of the Cross on Fridays, in English at 6:15 PM and in Polish at 7 PM. Join us today for a Lenten Concert from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM. Set aside time for personal prayer each day and pray as a family before meals. How will I use my treasure during Lent? Almsgiving! Almsgiving is more than giving money. It is all the things we can do to make the broken world whole again. We can give our time, talent and treasure. Our Food Pantry is having a fundraiser on March 20th (Night at the Races.) Come and support this worthy cause! As we continue our Lenten journeys this week, make a promise that you will be faithful to the Lenten practices of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. Make room for God and one another this Lent. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED We are looking for parishioners to help run our Bingo program on Saturday evenings. Please contact Fr. Robert at the Rectory if you are able to help out. MERCY NIGHT Open to all high school-aged youth (grades 9 to 12) Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament followed by the Theme: Who Needs LENT Anyway? March 6th, 7 to 10 PM Mercy H.S. (1225 Ostrander Ave., Riverhead ) CHOIR PRACTICE There is no practice right now for adults or children. For all who would like to participate in Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter services, there will be three mandatory rehearsals on Tuesdays, March 10th, 17th and 24th, for children at 6 PM and adults at 7 PM. New members are always welcome. Religious Ed students are strongly encouraged to participate.
