AROUND THE WORLD IN A PAPER PLANE (Adapted from the Daily Mail) Deep in the Mojave Desert Jeana Yeager, a 33 year-old schoolteacher s daughter from Texas, is in the countdown to achieving an astonishing ambition to fly around the world in a paper plane. It has taken 4 million pounds and five years of effort to make this dream true, and some time in the next nine months she and co-pilot Richard Rutan will climb aboard a featherlight plane called the Voyager and in 12 days and nights circle the globe without touching Earth. Can it really be done? we believe so. All the results from the test flights indicate it is possible, said Jeana, who holds four flying records and is a skilled engineer. If she and a former test pilot Rutan are wrong, the alternative is a crash landing at sea. In following the most favourable winds of the upper atmosphere, the flight of the Voyager is almost entirely over water. If they are successful the historic flight will rank alongside the exploits of Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart. The aircraft alone will be assured of a place in history in the Smithsonian Institute s Air and Space Museum alongside the spirit of St Louis. Jeana and Rutan hope to do 25,000 miles in the remarkable Voyager. Largely made with reinforced paper, Voyager s wing span exceeds that of a Boeing 727. It weighs less than the average car, but carries a tankerful of 1,489 gallons of fuel. Passengers ride on the tanks, one lying, the other sitting. In a test run over the Rockies Jeana was air sick for the first time in her life. The Voyager is so light and pliable, it bends and moves with a wind. It was a bit like being on board of a small yacht and lying down in the cabin and looking through the porthole in a heavy sea. We seemed to be going up and down as if in waves, she said. The turbulence forced them to take their flight plan to a much higher altitude, right on the edge of the atmosphere Strona 2 z 13
