Brzechwy 5/40, 84-240 Reda e-mail: robert@insects.pl ABSTRACT. This work presents new data, distribution maps and colour photographs of all Psilota species present in Poland, based on the revision of the material from institutional and private collections. Psilota exilistyla SMIT ET VUJIĆ, 2008 is published as new species for Poland and for Central Europe, revealing a more continuous distribution of the species in its range in Europe. An identification key for all Psilota species occurring in Poland has been proposed, containing some new characters helpful in determination. To better expose differences between species, high resolution photographs of male genitalia are presented. Some species have already been reported to occur in nests and burrows of various animals, both invertebrates and vertebrates. In this paper we report the occurrence of four Fannia ROBINEAU-DESVOIDY species in the nests of the great tit, Parus major LINNAEUS, from two localities, Owcze Głowy and Słomowo, in western Poland. We identified Fannia manicata (MEIGEN) and Fannia scalaris (FABRICIUS), common species known to develop in a variety of substrates, including birds nests. Two other fanniids, Fannia clara COLLIN and Fannia vesperilionis RINGDAHL, known to develop primarily in birds nests and mammals burrows, are newly reported from Poland. The peacock fly Callopistromyia annulipes (MACQUART) is recorded from Poland for the first time, based on specimens collected in the city of Wrocław, the south-western region of Lower Silesia. The males and females were observed during September on a warm, insulated hill near river, walking on dead trunks of the white poplar trees Populus alba cut by beavers. The flies showed the typical behavior of raising their wings vertically in such a way that their anterior margins meet. We summarize all hitherto know data on the occurrence of this alien species (native of North America) in Europe and its natural history. An efficiency of current biomonitoring methods based on macroinvertebrate families and higher taxa in the alpine streams is discussed. The proposal of the indicative Chironomidae species with their classification according to the water quality is given. The most important conclusion is the need to adapt the monitoring methods to the environmental conditions. In such a specific environment as the mountains, the Chironomidae-based index is evidenced to be a useful supplementation to the standard methods of the water quality monitoring.
