Abstract: The goal of the present work, was to determine possible applications of discussed formulas in predicting ignition delay for dual-fuel engines. In order to achieve this goal in-cylinder pressure traces have been recorded for a one cylinder, dual-fuel engine, for different power outputs and different ratios of liquid and gas fuels. Using those results moments of autoignition have been determined for the tested conditions. The measurement data has been compared with calculation results of three different delay models. It has been shown that the equation proposed by Assanis is able to describe ignition delay very well, for pilot dose quantity more than 20% overall fuel energy. W tym celu wykonano pomiary przebiegów ciśnienia w jednocylindrowym silniku dwupaliwowym, dla różnych obciążeń i różnych proporcji poszczególnych paliw. Na ich podstawie wyznaczono momenty wystąpienia zapłonu w silniku. Dane pomiarowe porównano z wynikami obliczeń dla poszczególnych modeli opóźnienia zapłonu. Wykazano, że równanie zaproponowane przez Assanisa bardzo dobrze opisuje opóźnienie samozapłonu w systemie dual-fuel, przy założeniu, że dawka oleju napędowego jest nie mniejsza niż 20% całkowitej energii dostarczanej z paliwem. Introduction The moment of ignition has a significant influence for the combustion process and directly effects parameters such as efficiency or emissivity. As far as there is no problem in determining this moment in a spark ignition engine (the mixture ignites immediately from the electric pulse given by the spark-plug), that in autoignition engines, the beginning of combustion is determined by ignition delay period. In a dual-fuel engine the air-gas mixture ignites from the energy released from burning pilot dose of diesel fuel. Research results show that even for the pilot dose being less than 1% overall energy, the ignition energy can be about 35 J more in a dualfuel engine than given from a spark-plug [12,11]. It can therefore be assumed that the beginning of combustion of both fractions (liquid and gas) is the same in a dual-fuel system and the problem of determining this point boils down to accurate modeling ignition delay of the pilot dose. The process however, takes place in conditions fairly different from those in a classic Diesel engine. For most gases the ignition delay increases, with the rise of gas concentration, compared to pure air operation. Many experimental and theoretical studies have been performed in order to examine the correlation between ignition delay and other parameters during combustion. There are however only limited information about correlations verified directly with a dual-fuel system utilizing CNG and diesel fuel. Matching the adequate model of ignition in such system needs therefore extensive analysis. The possibility of utilizing correlations made for standard diesel engines, taking to account a specific combustion environment of a dual-fuel engine needs checking. 2. Ignition delay correlations Many correlations have been proposed for modeling ignition delay of diesel fuel (and other liquid fuels) in constant volume bombs [17,4], steady flow burners [13,10] and combustion engines [16]. Most of those models use Arrhenius equation to predict the influence of in-cylinder temperature and pressure on ignition delay period. All formulas have the form similar to the one proposed by Wolfer [17]: (1) where E a stands for activation energy, T and p are tempereture and preassure respectevly, A and n are adjusteble coeficients. In some cases the temperature and pressure at the end of compression process of a modern engine exceed the limit where a model can be applied. Secondly, the experiments carried out on constant volume bombs do not reflect dynamics of pressure and temperature change which takes place inside the engine cylinder, during the ignition delay period. Besides, state parameters dependence only, doesn t fully describe the combustion environment, making the correlation valid only in similar conditions to those where it has been tested. Hardenberg and Hase [3] proposed an empirical formula, which enables calculating ignition delay in direct injection engines: ,2p 12,40,63 (2) Enabling the mean piston speed (S p ) dependence in the equation (2) allows for combining the ignition delay time with actual engine parameters. The authors proposed an expression for activation energy of the form: (3) Using the cetane number for expressing activation energy, the formula (2) enables modeling ignition delay for different fuels. The Hardenberg correlation had been used by Stelmasiak [14] to describe autoignition in a simple, zero-dimensional model of combustion in a dual-fuel engine. Stelmasiak assumed that the major cause of ignition delay in-crease observed when operating on CNG is greater specific heat and greater heat conductivity of air gas mixture compared to pure air. This leads to lower temperatures at the end of compression process. Using a correlation verified in a tradition DI engine to model autoignition during dual-fuel operation seems justified but only to the limits of rich air-gas mixtures. Research performed in recent years show that ignition delay depends strongly on oxygen concentration. Lowering oxygen concentration by adding CO2, in latest experiments by Yao et. Al. [18], lead to ignition delay extension up to 10 degrees. A similar effect had been observed by Andree and Precherneg when controlling oxygen concentration by recirculating a known amount of exhaust gas to the cylinder and changing charge pressure. Equation (2) doesn t account for dependence on mixture quality, which varies during dual-fuel operation. Assanis et. Al. [2], in their attempts to find an accurate correlation for ignition delay in heavy-duty turbocharged engines, based on kinetic reactions that lead to autotoignition. They assumed that the process can be described using a single step, global reaction, with reaction rate:. The exponent in equation (4), known as the Boltzmann coefficient, reflects the fraction of collisions with energy greater than activation energy. Using the equation of state the formula can be converted, giving ignition delay period: (5) where Φ is the equivalence ratio. The expression obtained is similar in form to the Watson equation (1) providing for additional dependency on chemical composition of the cylinder load. Since activation energy is related to the liquid fuel molecular properties, than its value should be the same as in the Watsons correlation, i.e. E A /R=2100 (tab. 1). The other coefficients where matched experimentally using the least squares method, giving: (6) Recently, first models correlated for dual-fuel engines data have been published. Liu and Karim [5] used a kinetic model of 138 reactions for predicting ignition delay in a natural gas, dual-fuel 2
3 engine. Not referring to the accuracy of the approach, the complexity of the model makes it impractical to use as part of bigger thermo-chemical simulations. Prakash et. al. [6] proposed a simplified method for calculating overall ignitron delay in dual-fuel system, utilizing modification of polytropic exploit during compression. The method showed good agreement with the experiment giving differences less than 1,5 degree of crank angle. Although simple and accurate enough, its use is very limited because the procedure requires explicit data from mono fuel operation of the engine in order to determine autoignition when working on CNG. In other words the formula verified for one object can t be used to another engine, even similar in construction. The model is not autonomic than and can only be used for adopting standard Diesel engine to dual-fuel feeding. 3. Object and Methods The goal of the presented work is to check whether the discussed formulas: Watson (1), Hardenberg (2) and Assanis (6) can be used for predicting ignition delay in a dual fuel engine. The first two were most commonly used for determining autoignition in Diesel engines and third correlation is a relatively new model verified for a modern heavy duty engine. To achieve this goal, the incylinder pressure as a function of crank angle was recorded for different Diesel/CNG ratios and different loads. Using this data the points of autoignition were allocated and compared with ignition delay calculation results from different models. As a research object a one-cylinder, direct injection Hatz 1B40 diesel engine was used. The engine has been associated with a 4,7 kw generator and equipped with a modernized dual-fuel feeding system. The technical parameters concerning the engine and the generator have been summarized in Table 2. Table 2. The research engine specification Tab. 2. Power 5900 VA 3~ Nominal Power 5400 VA 3~ During dual-fuel operation the gas was supplied through a set of proportional electro valves and a flow mixer to the intake manifold before the valve. The dual-fuel system along with the test bead has been described in the earlier work by Piętak et.al. [7,8,9]. The engine has been tested using the default parameters, with the injection angle of 15 and using the standard diesel injector and supply pump. During the test runs pressure data from 50 cycles has been recorded. The measurement has been preformed with constant engine speed and using the amount of CNG and engine load as regulation parameters. The engine speed has been controlled by a default regulator, which decreased the amount of fuel injected to the cylinder when the flow of CNG increased, holding the engine speed and preset load. Next the measurements have been repeated for succeeding load values. The test runs using dualfuel feeding have been preformed until the limit of 80% engine nominal power (using standard diesel operation) was reached. The start of combustion was determined through mathematical analysis of the cylinder pressure. Using the pressure data, the first and second order derivative of pressure has been calculated. According to Syrimis et al [15] and Ando et al [1] the second derivative of pressure always peaks at, or only slightly after the point of autoignition. Furthermore, the larger the amount of fuel that ignites, the higher the maximum acceleration of the net heat release rate and thus the higher the maximum slope of pressure acceleration. For those reasons the second derivative of cylinder pressure has been chosen for detection of the ignition point crank angle. An example of this technique, applied for one of the test results, has been illustrated in Fig 3.1. Each of the equations presented in section 2 utilizes the temperature of in cylinder gas at the end of the compression process, as one of the variables. Direct measurement of momentary in cylinder temperature is very difficult. This is the reason why, in the present work, the temperature was calculated using a natural gas air mixture, zero dim, compression model proposed by Stelmasiak [14]. The calculations were made using the pressure data acquired from the test run. In the correlation (13) the ignitron delay depends on the fuel/air ratio. The dose of liquid fuel injected to the combustion chamber in a dual fuel engine is much smaller than in standard operation. The fuel evaporates much faster in those conditions, so it can be assumed that the ignition process unfolds after complete evaporation. (7) This means that accurate measurement of air usage -V p, as well as fuel-g ON and gas V cng consumption are critical for the analysis. The air and fuel flow has been measured constantly during the test runs using the AVL fuel balance and mass flow meter, connected to the data acquisition system. 4. Results The pressure measurements data after averaging, for chosen power outputs, has been presented in figures below. The horizontal axis is in crank angle degrees for all those figures. Using the methodology described earlier the actual Ignition delay crank angle has been calculated and the results have been presented along with ignition pressure and temperature on Figures (4.2., 4.4., 4.6. and 4.8.). The mentioned graphs correspond to pressure data presented on figures (4.1., 4.3., 4.5. and 4.7.). Results are shown below, with respect to the measured delay values. Both horizontal and vertical axes are in terms of crank angle degrees to get measured values to be represented as a y=x straight line on the plot. 5

Discussion It can be seen on figure that ignition delay actually increases with the rise of gas concentration. The bar charts indicate that the rise of ignition delay period is associated with the drop of engine thermodynamic parameters values. Both pressure and temperature in the cylinder during start of injection decrease when diesel/gas ratio lowers. We believe that this is the main reason of increased ignition delay. Lower temperatures during compression when operating on CNG are probably due to greater specific heat and greater heat conductivity of air gas mixture compared to pure air. When it comes to comparing the real ignition delay values with the results given by tested correlations (fig ), it seems that both Watson (1) and Assanis (6) equation capture satisfactory ignition delay in a dual fuel engine. The Hardenberg and Hase formula, on the other hand, under predicted the delay period drastically in all tested conditions. The similar results given by Watson and Assanis formula are due to that they are very similar in form and differ only by the pre-exponent coefficient which is constant in the first one and mixture quality dependent in the second. The Assanis formula showed the best agreement with the measurements for diesel/gas ratio of more than 20%, with maximum difference between measurements and calculation of no more than 1 CA degree. This is certainly very good result taking to account that maximum accuracy of determining the angle of autoignition has been 0,5 CA degree (due to maximum resolution of pressure detection). It s also worth to notice that the accuracy of the nonautonomic model that Prakash [6] proposed directly for the tested dual fuel engine has been within the limit of 1,5 CA deg. Better accuracy of Assanis formula compared to Watson proves that the equivalence ratio has the significant influence for the ignition delay. This can be due to both smaller amount of diesel that auto ignites or lower oxygen concentration that comes from gas presence in the combustion chamber. Results indicate that for diesel doses of less than 20% the Assanis correlation starts to over predict the data. It seems dough that the influence of equivalence ratio for ignition delay period becomes less important for higher gas concentration and other correlations should be searched. The diesel injection system used during the present work doesn t allow proper application of small doses and accu- 6
7 rate injection moment regulation. For farther analysis of ignition delay in a system working under 20% diesel dose, a modern common-rail system is necessary. It seems interesting that for measurements carried out for Pe 3 =2.6 kw and Pe 4 =3.1 kw we received the lowest pressure and temperature values when operating on pure diesel. After applying even a small dose of gas we observed a significant increase of those parameters. Further increasing gas concentration resulted in known tendency for the thermodynamic parameters to decrease. Although this behavior doesn t fit to any physical model, and might be the result of the regulation system unknown operation, it is important that the Assanis correlation was able to predict the ignition delay period properly also at this point. 6. Conclusion We have acknowledged the thesis that increased gas/diesel ratio leads to longer ignition delay in a dual-fuel engine. Adding CNG results in lower pressure and temperature during injection which directly affects delay period. We have showed that the Assanis correlation is certainly the best available solution for predicting ignition delay in a dual-fuel engine working with pilot dose of more than 20% diesel. For dual-fuel systems working on lower diesel concentration other correlations must be researched. At the present state of knowledge for modeling ignition delay in a dual fuel engine it is best to use Assanis formula for doses of more than 20% diesel, and the known non-autonomic method of Prakash for smaller amounts. 7
