4 SPAIN Sesé Group, a Spanish international logistics company headquartered in Zaragoza, has acquired 10 new CNG-powered Stralis Hi-Way tractors as part of its fleet expansion. The vehicles, supplied by Motortrans, the official Iveco dealer in the city, are equipped with both CNG and LNG fuel storage, enabling refuelling flexibility. The 4 2 axle tractors are based on the Iveco AT440S33T_P series. The 7.79cc 6-cylindr turbo engine delivers 330 hp and 1,300 Nm of torque between 1,200 and 1,800 rpm. The Stralis is equipped with a 567 litre cryogenic LNG tank on its ride side and four 70 litre CNG tanks mounted on its left side, enabling an operating range of 650 kms on LNG and 100 on CNG a total of 750 kms. CNG is usually used for small maneuvers. Source: Iveco Spain USA Omnitek Engineering Corp. said inquires from large fleet operators interested in converting heavy-duty truck engines to NG gained momentum in 2013, with the company shipping a preliminary order late in December to one of its domestic conversion center partners and the commencement of initial kit sales to a European country committed to a 10-year target of two million conversions. In addition, a Latin America customer received a preliminary order of U.S. manufactured natural gas engines utilizing the company s technology for an initial 50-bus conversion project. FRANCE The Board of Syndicat des Transports d Île de France (STIF), which organises public transport in the greater Paris area, adopted a plan mid- December to reduce pollutants emitted by buses. It has requested Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens (RATP), the state-owned public transport operator responsible for most of the public transport in Paris and its surrounding Île-de-France region, to initiate in 2014 a bus acquisition program to reduce fine particle fleet emissions by 50% in 2 years (mid- 2016). On the horizon for , STIF plans sufficient biomethane- CNG and electric buses to enable it to deliver on its goal of 20% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions within the Urban Transport Plan of Île-de- France. Other than for existing commitments, buses operating solely on diesel can no longer be purchased. France currently has limited capacity to produce biomethane; CNG will be used while the country builds production facilities to supply this renewable fuel % of CNG buses operating in France have been manufactured in-country according to AFGNV, France s industry association for natural gas vehicles. RATP has been running IVECO-Renault CNG-powered Agora buses since mid AFGNV says there are positive indications of growing OEM interest in the nation s alternative fuel market, with Scania and MAN, both manufacturers of Euro VI CNG buses, joining the association. According to the agreement, Russian industrial vehicle manufacturer Raritek will use valves made by the Italian-based Cavagna Group and Type IV lightweight gas cylinders manufactured by German-based xperion Energy & Environment GmbH. The General Director of LLC RariTEK Rafael Batyrshin said: This agreement strengthens the relationship and cooperation between the Cavagna Group and xperion Energy & Environment. As CNG technology providers, we were the first to recommend Cavagna Group products to Kamaz and now all the valves used in Kamaz vehicles are made by the Italian company. LLC RariTEK is ОАО KAMAZ s official distributor and strategic partner for the manufacture of CNG-powered vehicles. It is actively involved in NGV strategy development and the implementation of alternative motor fuels on the Russian market. Russia s first specialized service centre for installing CNG systems, and repairing and maintaining KAMAZ goods vehicles and NefAZ buses with gas engines is located on the LLC RariTEK production site. In addition, there will be an increased supply of vehicles available to retrofit as a result of the high level of late Euro 5 vehicle purchases made by operators ahead of the imminent change to Euro 6. GERMANY AND NORWAY MAN Diesel & Turbo s 6-cylinder S70ME-GI dual-fuel low-speed engine (graphical rendition) Knutsen OAS Shipping, a Norwegian shipping company, has placed an order for 2 2 7G70 ME-GI engines in connection with the building of two 176,300 m 3 capacity LNG carriers. Depending on relative price and availability, as well as environmental considerations, the ME-GI engine gives ship owners and operators the option of using either HFO or gas predominantly natural gas. To date, MAN Diesel & Turbo has clinched orders for 42 dual-fuel units, representing a power output of 780 MW. Within the company s low-speed engine portfolio, the ME-GI engine is officially designated as ME-C-GI (M-type, Electronically Controlled, GI for Gas Injection). MAN Diesel & Turbo has verified that, even when compared to the best modern Dual Fuel Diesel Electric (DFDE) propulsion solution, an ME-GI engine delivers fuel savings of more than 30 tones of gas per day when operating at a normal ship speed of knots. The environmentally friendly ME-GI engine also delivers significant reductions in CO 2, NOx and SOx emissions without any methane slip. Nawet i we Włoszech obrót w sektorze zmian instalacji na paliwa alternatywne nie rozwija się tak dobrze, jak w latach ubiegłych: do końca sierpnia wszakże przerobiono samochodów na gaz. Z tego pojazdów przypada na tzw. rozwiązania fabryczne, a instalacji gazowych zostało zamontowanych w warsztatach samochodowych. Bilans gazu ziemnego jako paliwa wypada tam, jak i w większości europejskich państw, znacznie gorzej: tylko Włochów zdecydowało się na rozwiązanie wykorzystujące metan, z czego kierowców zamontowało instalację CNG, a wybrało ja zamontowaną fabrycznie. Obserwując we Włoszech liczbę dopuszczonych do ruchu samochodów na LPG oraz gaz ziemny na przestrzeni ostatnich 15 lat, to dotychczas średnio 75% kierowców, którzy chcieli wykorzystywać alternatywne napędy, zdecydowało się na LPG, a jedynie 25% na gaz ziemny. Lub inaczej mówiąc: trzech spośród czterech kierowców, którzy chcieli zrezygnować z konwencjonalnych paliw, wybrało LPG. Tym samym mit o Włoszech jako kraju cudu gazu ziemnego, jaki zawsze się opowiada, można uznać za wyraźnie obalony. Jeśli Włosi kupują nowe samochody z napędem na gaz, to pod względem wyboru modeli są raczej patriotami i wybierają Fiata (21,96 %). Zaskakującym faktem było, że Opel sprzedał 13,62% pojazdów na LPG, plasując się przed Lancią, która osiągnęła poziom 12,09%, przy czym nowy Opel Adam nie został jeszcze ujęty w tej statystyce. VW cieszył się u upartych południowców tylko niewielkim zaufaniem w sprawach LPG: producent z Wolfsburga uzyskał 1,26% udziału w całym segmencie autogazu. Hyundai (5,69 %) oraz Kia (3,12 %) uplasowały się przy tym na znacznie lepszej pozycji. Sytuacja wygląda inaczej w przypadku napędów na gaz ziemny. Tu wprawdzie rynkiem rządzą Fiat (69,97 %) oraz Lancia (11,43 %), to jednak Volkswagen znacznie nadrobił i zapewnił sobie udział w rynku na poziomie 11,75 %. Dochody przynosi w tym zakresie VW Up, na którego w ostatnich ośmiu miesiącach tego roku znalazło się we Włoszech 4031 klientów. Takie liczby cieszyłyby producenta z Untertürkheim: tylko 8 mercedesów klasy E z napędem na gaz ziemny znalazło w pierwszych ośmiu miesiącach 2013 roku nabywców we Włoszech, to dość słaby wynik jak na taką markę. autogazu. ITALY IN GERMANY, MANY PLANTS HANDLING CONVERSIONS INTO ALTERNATIVE FUEL SYSTEMS COMPLAIN ABOUT A MUCH FALLING TURNOVER DESPITE THE HIGH PRICES OF PETROL AND DIESEL; SOME IMPORTERS ARE EVEN TALKING ABOUT A SIGNIFICANT CLEARING OF THE MARKET. Even in Italy the rate of conversion into the alternative fuel systems is not developing as well as in previous years: by the end of August, however, 148,968 vehicles were converted into LPG, 80,116 of which fall into the so-called factory solutions category, whereas 68,852 gas systems were installed in garages. The balance of natural gas as fuel fares much worse there, as well as in most European countries: only 56,385 Italians opted for a solution using methane, where 10,665 drivers converted to CNG, and 45,720 had it factory fitted. If we take a look at the number of officially registered LPG vehicles in Italy and natural gas over the last 15 years, yet so far, an average of 75% of drivers who wanted to use alternative fuels have decided on LPG, and only 25% have opted for natural gas. Or in other words, three out of four drivers who wanted to opt out of conventional fuels finally chose LPG. Thus, the myth of the Italy as a country of natural gas miracle, as told by many, can be considered clearly overthrown. ALTERNATIVE FUELS ARE HEADING TOWARDS CRISIS, DESPITE THE HIGH PRICES OF PETROL AND DIESEL It is striking that the huge subsidies that the state of Italy granted in the years 2009 and 2010, contributing to a real boom in autogas, resulted in a sort of market saturation, where it is really hard to be released from it now. After 496,731 autogas conversions in 2009 and 387,992 in 2010, the number is constantly decreasing. Only last year, when the price of petrol in Italy reached a staggering level of over two euros, a slight increase was recorded. As regards LPG, the same also applies in a tendentious, but at a much lower level, to natural gas vehicles. If Italians buy new cars with factory fitted autogas systems, in terms of choice of models they are rather patriotic and choose Fiat (21.96%). A surprising fact was that Opel has sold 13.62% of the LPG vehicles, which places it ahead of Lancia with its 12,09%, where the new Opel Adam has not yet been included in the statistics. VW has enjoyed little trust with a little stubborn southerners when it comes to autogas systems: the manufacturer from Wolfsburg acquired 1.26% share in the segment of LPG. Hyundai (5.69 %) and Kia (3.12 %) were ranked much higher though. The situation is different in the case of natural gas systems. Here, although the market is ruled by Fiat (69.97%) and Lancia (11.43%), Volkswagen has much caught up and secured a market share at 11.75%. Revenue is actually brought in this regard by VW Up, which has been bought by 4031 customers in Italy within the last eight months of this year. Such a number would satisfy the manufacturer of Untertürkheim with only 8 E-Class Mercedes cars with natural gas systems found buyers in Italy in the first eight months of 2013, which is a pretty weak result for the brand. Comparing sales in Italy and Germany, we can say that we are currently dealing with two classes of society when it comes to the automobile industry. Co się tyczy autogazu, dotyczy także w sposób tendencyjny, ale na znacznie niższym poziomie, także pojazdów na gaz ziemny. Porównując wyniki sprzedaży we Włoszech i w Niemczech, można stwierdzić, że obecnie mamy do czynienia ze społeczeństwem dwóch klas, jeśli chodzi o branżę samochodową. Jedną warstwę społeczną, której tak dobrze się powodzi, że nawet nie musi myśleć o obniżeniu kosztów paliwa oraz taką, która musi oszczędzać każdy cent i nie zawsze może sobie pozwolić na montaż instalacji gazowej ze względu na jej koszt. EUROPEAN COUNCIL AND PARLIAMENT REACH INFORMAL AGREEMENT ON CAR CO 2 EMISSIONS REDUCTION Apart from that, on 29 November 2013 the EU Council s Permanent Representatives Committee confirmed the agreement reached with the European Parliament on the 2020 reduction of CO 2 emissions from new passenger cars. The text still needs to be formally approved by the Parliament, whose vote in plenary is expected to take place in January 2014, and by the Council, which is due to take its decision after the vote in Parliament. The new regulation defines the terms and conditions for car manufacturers for reaching the 2020 target for CO 2 emissions (95g CO 2 /km) from new passenger cars. A limited one-year phase-in period requires 95% of new car sales to comply with the target in 2020 and 100% by the end of 2020 onwards. The regulation also provides for the use of so-called super-credits from 2020 to 2022: this means incentives for car manufacturers to develop new technologies and manufacture cars with low emission levels (less than 50g CO 2 / km), as these cars would count more towards meeting the fleet average than normal cars. The limit for the use of super-credits is set at 7.5g of CO 2 /km for the three years The Commission will review the regulation by the end of 2015 in order to establish targets for the period beyond The regulation will enter into force on the third day following that of its publication in the Official Journal of the EU.
