Poland Even More Beautiful! The aim of the competition Poland Even More Beautiful 7 Miracles of EU Funds is to select and award the best projects related to tourism, sports and recreation infrastructure, as well as public space planning and revitalisation, that have been co-financed from European Funds. The main prizes are awarded in seven categories. The project entitled Establishment of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków is the winner in the Revitalisation category. You are invited to visit the only museum of contemporary art built in Poland from the ground up and, what is more, in a former industrial area. 4 INTRODUCTION 5

MOCAK The museum building was designed by a highly valued Italian architect, Claudio Nardi, who used in it six facilities existing on the site of the former Schindler s Factory. He based the concept on three main assumptions: highlighting the characteristic line of the factory s saw tooth roof (a roof comprising several asymmetrical pitched roofs), using straight lines only, and using natural light to illuminate the exhibition areas. The MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków is not only a place where works of contemporary art are exhibited. The facility s creators wanted, above all, to create a meeting place, and to convince its visitors that contemporary art is highly valuable and can be used as a tool in the process of getting to know the world. Project: Establishment of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Kraków Beneficiary: Municipal Buildings Office in Kraków Location: Kraków, Małopolska Province Programme: 2007-2013 Małopolska Regional Operational Programme, 5.2 Development of metropolitan functions of the Kraków Metropolitan Area Project value: approx. PLN 75.0 million EU Subsidies: approx. PLN 35.7 million 6 ABOUT THE PROJECT ABOUT THE PROJECT 7

Zabłocie a must visit Zabłocie is a former industrial district of Kraków, located near the city centre. Its unique architecture and fashionable post-industrial atmosphere attract special, outstanding members of the Kraków community and guests. The number of trendy clubs, pubs and exclusive lofts, i.e. flats arranged in former industrial buildings, is growing in Zabłocie. The revival of tourist attendances has been influenced, above all, by two institutions: MOCAK and the branch of the Historical Museum of Kraków, established on the site of the former Schindler s Factory. In 2010, the Bernatek Footbridge (famous for the padlocks hung there by the ones in love) was constructed, making the walk from Zabłocie to Kazimierz last less than twenty minutes. 8 CULTURE IS MUCH SOUGHT AFTER CULTURE IS MUCH SOUGHT AFTER 9

In the European elite MOCAK does not leave anybody indifferent. It intrigues and attracts attention in an unconventional way. The strongest magnet is the museum s collections. Once a year, the permanent exhibition is modified (at least half of the works exhibited in the museum interiors are changed). The Museum also organises large thematic exhibitions. This series was inaugurated in May 2011 with the presentation entitled History in Art. Last year was dedicated to sports with the exhibition entitled Sports in Art. This year, an exhibition called Economy in Art is planned. In the coming years, the series will include, among others, Crime in Art, Politics in Art and Religion in Art. By the end of 2012, as many as 28 temporary exhibitions were held and three shows of the permanent collection were organised. 10 CULTURE IS MUCH SOUGHT AFTER CULTURE IS MUCH SOUGHT AFTER 11

Art with a capital A The unique MOCAK collection (at present, around 3.5 thousand works of art) comprises works representing various trends and areas of modern art painting, sculpture, installation art, poster art and visual arts. The most important works include, among others, the 7+1 sculpture by Mirosław Bałka, the Between installation by Stanisław Dróżdż, and almost the whole artistic legacy of Mikołaj Smoczyński, comprising 45 photographic cycles and hundreds of negatives and diapositives (slides). The museum is also the depositary of the collections of Prof. Mieczysław Porębski, an art historian, which comprise paintings by: Jerzy Nowosielski, Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz, Maria Jarema, Tadeusz Kantor, Jan Lebenstein, Jerzy Tchórzewski and Jan Tarasin. A real treat for reading enthusiasts is the opportunity to use the book collection (almost 4 thousand volumes handed over) in the Mieczysław Porębski Library, modelled on the actual library of this famous art historian. 12 CULTURE IS MUCH SOUGHT AFTER CULTURE IS MUCH SOUGHT AFTER 13

Free from prejudice The museum employees ambition is to educate various groups of addressees, including people who approach modern art with reserve. Thus, regular museum lessons and workshops are organised here, whose subject matter is adjusted for small children, school children, students, adults and seniors. One of the most interesting forms of educational activity offered by the museum is the MOCAK Club in which lectures, seminaria, studio meetings, film shows, discussions, theatrical performances and book promotions are organised. In the artistic bookshop MOCAK Bookstore, the visitors are offered not only several thousand products of the Polish and foreign publishing markets, but also unique objects signed by well-known artists. 14 CULTURE IS MUCH SOUGHT AFTER CULTURE IS MUCH SOUGHT AFTER 15

Plenty is no plague Projects originating in Kraków have been highly appreciated in the competition Poland Even More Beautiful 7 Miracles of EU Funds. It is worth taking some of them into account while planning a visit to the town of Krak. Seweryn Udziela Ethnographic Museum (Nominee in the Promotional product category, 2011) Why is ethnography a way of thinking and looking, and a form of dialogue? An answer to this question can be found by visiting the museum and permanent exhibition Polish Folk Culture which presents, for example, the traditional rural buildings, residential interiors, craft workshops, a gallery of Polish folk costumes, exhibits related to annual and family rites, and Polish folk art. Market Square Vaults (Nominee in the Venue category, 2011) The exhibition In the footsteps of Kraków s European identity a tourist route through the vaults under the Main Square reflects the findings of the research of the 1000-year-long history of this place. The exhibition presents, among others, the connections between medieval Kraków and other European centres. Having the youngest visitors in mind, a performance was prepared to tell the story of a shoemaker, Skuba, who wandered to Wawel Castle, where he fought with the local dragon. A curiosity here is the fact that the puppets are operated with the use of pneumatic mechanisms that are synchronised with sound and light effects. 16 THE INEVIDENT KRAKÓW THE INEVIDENT KRAKÓW 17

Sukiennice (Winner in the Historic building category, 2011) The gallery in Sukiennice is one of the most beautiful and the most recognisable symbols of Kraków. In the multimedia room, with the use of a touchscreen, one can become acquainted, in detail, with the first painting in the collections of the National Museum in Kraków, Nero s Torches by Henryk Siemiradzki. In turn, the media centre offers computer stations with special software on 19 th -century Polish art. In the gallery halls there are small touchscreens that display information and interesting facts about the paintings. Visitors can also use the audio-guides and an interactive guide application for smartphones. 18 THE INEVIDENT KRAKÓW THE INEVIDENT KRAKÓW 19

The Royal Route for disabled tourists (Winner in the Active tourism category, 2011) This is one of the most extensive tourist routes in Europe, which has also been created with the blind and visually impaired in mind. The Royal Route runs from the Floriańska Gate, through the Main Market Square, to Wawel Castle. Along the route, one may admire 12 maquettes of historical buildings with short descriptions in the Braille and Latin alphabets, in two language versions: Polish and English. Polish Aviation Museum (Winner in the Venue category, 2012) A rotating propeller this is what the building of the Polish Aviation Museum looks like from a bird s eye view. The main exhibition hall houses, among others, the only preserved models of the Polish PZL P.11c and RWD 21 planes, and the tailless IS-6x Nietoperz glider. In the educational room, the visitors can practise their skills on a flight simulator, look at the cross-section of a plane's engine. 20 THE INEVIDENT KRAKÓW THE INEVIDENT KRAKÓW 21

A new dimension The Royal Kraków is not only Wawel Castle, the Barbican, the Dragon and Sukiennice, but also fringe galleries, theatre festivals or the cellars. It is worth stepping off the main routes to get into the spirit of this city s atmosphere. Our recommendations: University Route Jewish Heritage Route Nowa Huta Route Science Route Kraków museum trails the art of Young Poland movement, stained glass Kraków museum trails the science and knowledge trail Kraków museum trails life in the past Kraków museum trails the Jewish culture trail. Culture goes underground The Kraków Market Square is famous for its cellars, with the Cellar under the Rams at the fore. You enter, as always, by the Community Centre; however, having entered the yard, instead of going right and then left, you have to immediately turn right, where you will see hidden narrow steps, a big half-open iron door, and again some steps, this time wider and winding ones; a forgotten, heavily dusted, huge plaster bust; hushed voices accompanied by the sound of iron tools being hit. And this is the place! wrote Piotr Skrzynecki in spring 1956, in Dziennik Polski, in the first article on the Cellar under the Rams. Originally, it was to be a place for student meetings, but is soon became a mecca for the best artists, cabaret artists and jazz musicians. It is also worth visiting: The Municipal Cellar (under the City Hall tower) the former beer house and prison's place of torture, today the Stage under the City Hall of the Kraków based Ludowy Theatre The former Świdnicka Cellar (at number 1 Main Market Square, in the north-east corner of Kraków s City Hall cellars, with the windows facing the Market Square) a beer house for a very long time, currently a restaurant. 24 ON FIRST-NAME TERMS WITH TOURISM ON FIRST-NAME TERMS WITH TOURISM 25

The kingdom of festivals Spectacular shows for an audience of thousands, and events that are famous throughout Poland and Europe this is what Kraków offers to the lovers of music, art, literature and theatre. They are invited to, among others: Jewish Culture Festival one of the biggest festivals of this type in the world, held in Kraków s Kazimierz since 1988 Opera Rara initiated in 2009, a presentation of outstanding opera productions enjoying great success on the most prestigious stages Misteria Paschalia Holy Week and Easter Renaissance and Baroque music, performed by the most outstanding musicians International Festival of Independent Cinema Off Plus Camera its organisers have managed to combine niche cinema with mass interest Film Music Festival the projected films are accompanied by live film music Czesław Miłosz Literary Festival a great literature festival with the participation of guests from all over the world, including Nobel Prize winners 26 ON FIRST-NAME TERMS WITH TOURISM ON FIRST-NAME TERMS WITH TOURISM 27

Grolsch ArtBoom Festiwal an event presenting Polish and foreign contemporary art St. John s Fair in June, a few days prior to Midsummer Night, on the banks of the Vistula River and at the foot of Wawel Castle, a medieval town is constructed Kraków Garlands concerts of popular music stars accompanied by elements of a show drawing on the Midsummer Night tradition Coke Live Music Festival a festival of hip-hop, rhythm and blues, and pop sounds, but also fans of rock will be satisfied Unsound this originally underground event has gathered momentum over recent years Sacrum Profanum Festival this event obliterates the boundaries between contemporary music and the achievements of ambitious entertainment and experimental music Conrad Festival for nearly a week, Kraków has as its guests the most outstanding representatives of the world s literature International Theatre Festival Divine Comedy Kraków theatres offer the best Polish performances of the last season. 28 ON FIRST-NAME TERMS WITH TOURISM ON FIRST-NAME TERMS WITH TOURISM 29

Who rules here? Physics Enthusiasts of popular science programmes should turn off their TV sets as fast as possible and go to the Stanisław Lem Garden of Experiences in Nowa Huta (winner of the 1 st edition of the competition Poland Even More Beautiful 7 Miracles of EU Funds in the Venue category). At the moment of its opening in 2007, it was the first sensory educational park in Poland. The park is modelled on the well-known Field of Experiences for the Senses in Nuremberg. Both small and older children can spend hours on testing various devices which show them the secrets of optics, acoustics and mechanics. Even the youngest visitors of the garden will understand that the brachistochrone curve is the curve of the fastest descent, used in planning of space shuttle flights. And all this can be found out by a simple experiment in which two rolling balls are used. 30 ON FIRST-NAME TERMS WITH TOURISM ON FIRST-NAME TERMS WITH TOURISM 31
