2 Polish cuisine If you want to try traditional Polish cusine, you have to stop counting your calories. Polish traditional foods consists of traditional Slavic fare, but also has influences from Italy and France that date back to the medieval Polish court. The Polish traditional foods you will encounter today are flavorful, hearty, and complex. Typical dishes are very hearty and often contain a lot of meal, but they have a lighter side, too. Polish traditional food features many soups, made with mushrooms, broth, and beets. But imagine, if you will combaine all of these ingredients and you will get a delicious hearty hunter s stew. This stew, called bigos is a combination of cabbage, mushrooms, and various meats traditionally pork, bacon, and delicious Polish sausage, but today bigos may also contain different types of meat, for example duck. Pierogi have long been a traditional Polish food staple. They may have come from Russia in the Middle Ages, but they are as Polish as Polish food gets. Dough filled with cheese, potatoes, onions, cabbage, mushrooms, meat (or almost any other ingredient, savory or sweet, that you can think of), pierogi are served steaming hot boiled or fried and are accompanied by sour cream. Zrazy is Polish traditional food that will stick to your ribs. A filling of bacon, breadcrumbs, mushrooms, and cucumber is rolled inside a seasoned slice of sirloin beef then fried or grilled to allow the flavors to mingle. With a side of mizeria, or cucumber salad, you ll have a meal bursting with all the flavors of the best Polish traditional food. This chilled salad is composed of thinly-sliced cucumbers, sprigs of dill, and chopped onion in a sour cream and lemon juice dressing. Kotlet schabowy is a Polish variety of pork breaded cutlet coated with breadcrumbs similar to Viennese schnitzel, but made of pork tenderloin or with pork chop. There's also the Polish variety of the chicken breast cutlet coated with breadcrumbs looking somewhat similar, or the turkey cutlet coated with breadcrumbs made the same way. Fish dishes are also popular, especially in regional Polish traditional food. Carp, pike, perch, eel, and sturgeon are all popular and served in various ways. Pork is the most common meat in traditional Polish cuisine, but chicken, beef, venison, duck, and other meats are seen on restaurant menus today. For desert, Polish meals will include Polish cheesecake, or sernik, apple tarts (szarlotka),makowiec (a sponge cake with a poppyseed filling), or eklerka (éclairs). While clear vodkas are generally reserved for giving away at weddings and mixing in cocktails, the real fun of Polish vodka sampling is the flavoured vodkas. Most baristas should be able to provide you with some of these Polish specialties Krupnik Popular in Poland and Lithuania, Krupnik is a sweet vodka made from honey and a multitude of herbs. Żubrówka One of Poland s most popular overseas vodka exports, Żubrówka has been produced in Eastern Poland since the 16th century. Flavoured with a type of grass specific to the primeval Białowieża Forest. Żubrówka is most commonly combined with apple juice a refreshing concoction called a tatanka.

4 Money & Health Care MONEY EXCHANGE: The currency in Poland is zloty (PLN) 1 PLN=100 groszy Notes and coins are of the following denominations: Coins: 1,2,5,10,20 and 50 groszy 1,2,5 zlotys Bannotes: 10,20,50,100 and 200 zlotys After arrival on the airport in Poland it is the best to use cashpoint to withdraw PLN. If you want to exchange money it is not recomended to do it on the airport. If you need, change just a small sum (50USD or 40 EUR) Later you can buy more zlotys in exchange offices (in Polish called kantor ) or banks located all over the city. If you want to use a cantor, the best way is to go to the shopping center (like Golden Terraces) where everything will be done quickly and safely. If you close your account 3 months or less after opening, you wlll have to pay a percentage (about 50 PLN) HEALTH CARE: When you experience any health problems, do not wait call a doctor. Public health services: You will have to cover all the costs of possible treatment in Poland after visit. If you have a valid medical insurance, you will have all money turned back after coming back to your country. 5 Public transport in Warsaw The Polish capital owns a really well-developed public transport system with about 200 different bus routes and over 30 tram lines. It s organized by ZTM (Zarząd Transportu Miejskiego, www.ztm.waw.pl), which offers us clear and simple website (there is also English version), where we can find all timetables. It s really well to know the other website called www.warszawa.jakdojade.pl, which will generate us your trip plan automatically (smartphone apps also available). Most of lines are powered by modern and clean vehicles. Metro In Warsaw there is the only one line (second one under construction) connecting Żoliborz (Młociny Metro Station) directly to the southern part of the city (Ursynów, served by Kabaty Metro Station). The metro runs daily between 5 am and midnight (every 3-4 minutes during peak hours, every 7-8 minutes at off-peak times). Additional service is provided on Fridays and Saturdays between 00:15 am and 2:30 am (every 15 minutes). Buses Busses are going through the whole town, also to districts which are far from the center. There are different types of busses. Special busses are recognizable by their bus-number: a) Standard buses are numbered from 100 to 399. These buses stop at all stops. b) Lines 400-599 are fast one. They stop only on the important stops. c) Zones lines are numbered 700-899. For these buses it s necessary to own ticket, which is valid in second zone. d) Night buses are marked with the letter N followed by a number. e) Buses from the Chopin Airport to the city center: 175, N32. Trams The tram is the oldest of Warsaw's means of transport. They re available in most of Warsaw s districts (excepted Ursynów). Though trams are usually crowded, especially during rush hours (7-8 in the morning and 2-5 in the afternoon), they are regarded as the fastest of all the public transportation options. Tram lines are numbered from 1 to 79. Numbers 1-39 include basic connections. Tram lines with numbers from 40 to 49 run at specific times of day or week. Trams with other numbers are operated on special or substitute lines. Urban Rapid Rail (Szybka Kolej Miejska) Trains of Szybka Kolej Miejska - SKM are marked with the letter "S" and a number. It s really comfortable mean of transport especially for people, who want to get to suburbs of Warsaw. Unfortunately, for some places is necessary to buy separate ticket. The Watertram A cruise by the Wars ship, lasting more than one hour and a half, creates the opportunity to escape from everyday rush and wild city life. From the water tram board you may admire the wild side of Warsaw at the east bank of the Vistula River, that is Praga district, there is also possibility to see the Old Town panorama during the cruise. The tickets are available onboard the water tram (before the departure, on the Czernikowski Cypel) or in pre-sale in the office of Żegluga Stołeczna (ul. Świętokrzyska street No. 36)

6 Tickets Although there are many carrier companies, tickets are issued and controlled by the single ZTM and are valid for all means of transport. Tickets can be bought from some newsagents (RUCH is the most popular), or anywhere with a sign reading Bilety. There are now also a series of ticket machines with instructions in English dotted around the city, and English translations are printed on tickets. A standard public transport single ticket costs 4,40 PLN (approximately 1 euro) IMPORTANT: it s necessary to have ISIC Card to by student tickets for public transport. Warsaw CITY CARD What is this? It is just the Warsaw City Card which is a short-term and long-term (1-, 3-, 30-, and 90-day) ticket carrier with a permanent imprint of a user photo and their personal data, which allowed you to use all means of public transport in Warsaw (expected water tram) How to get it? It s extremely easy, all you have to do it is just to complete this application: https://personalizacja.ztm.waw.pl/?l=2 IMPORTANT: Because of waiting time for getting CITY CARD, you should complete the application at least two days before your flight to Poland. During the first journey the ticket should be validated immediately after boarding the vehicle. When travelling by metro, you should validate the ticket at the entrance gate before entering the platform. During next journeys it is not necessary to validate CITY CARD again. If you use single tickets, you have to validate your tickets every time.

7 Accomodation Dormitories of Warsaw University of Technology Students of Warsaw University of Technology live in 11 dormitories. Mikrus and Riviera are located near the main campus of WUT. Although Riviera is the most expensive dormitory it has the highest standard. Students live in two-room segments. 6 students share one bathroom, toilet and kitchen. In Mikrus there are double, triple and a couple of single rooms. All the students that live on one floor share bathrooms, toilets and kitchens. Students that live in Mikrus and Riviera can use gym, silent rooms (for studying), laundries, and ballrooms. The easiest way to get to Mikrus and Riviera is by underground or by any bus that stops at that Underground station Politechnika. 8 Other dormitories have old type rooms. Riviera is the best dormitory at Warsaw University of Technology. Some useful information about Riviera: - Administration is located on the ground floor near the elevators.(when you ll come into building, turn 45grades to left and you ll see doors with electronic sensor, the Administration door is inside). Usually they don t speak English and it would be great if you ll find anyone, who speaks Polish. - Our office IAESTE Warszawa is located also in Riviera. Room A103. When you come into building, you should turn left and you ll see the stairs which lead to some offices. - About below mentioned electronic sensor. To open the entrance door in part with dormitory rooms you have to magnetize your card (I suppose it could be any card) in same Administration And please remember that the last day of payment for your living in dormitory is 15 th day of each month.
