I. INTRODUCTION (WELCOME) Welcome to the Northern Region of Poland! We are pleased that you have chosen our region as a place where you can make another step in the development of your research career and take an active holiday in your free time. The Mobility Centre in Gdansk operates at Gdansk University of Technology (Politechnika Gdanska) (www.pg.gda.pl) as a part of the European Programmes Office (www.pg.gda.pl/pr) and is based on the EU Regional Contact Point. Its operations cover the territory of two voivodships: pomorskie and kujawsko-pomorskie. Address: ul. Narutowicza 11/12, 80-233 Gdansk, phone: +48 58 347 24 12 fax: +48 58 347 27 11 e-mail: proeuro@pg.gda.pl, rdzap@pg.gda.pl How to find the Mobility Centre in Gdansk: The Mobility Centre in Gdansk is situated in Gdansk University of Technology headquarters, approx. 2 km of the centre of the city. The easiest way to get there is from: Central Railway Station in Gdansk by tram no. 6 and 11 departing in the direction of Wrzeszcz from the tram stop between the Railway Station and Bus Station at 3 Maja Street (you should get off at the 6 th stop Politechnika ); Airport Gdansk-Rebiechowo by bus no. B (you should get off at 12 th stop Opera Baltycka ). ==================================================================== II. ABOUT THE REGION Introduction The Northern Region comprising two voivodships (pomorskie (http://www.woj-pomorskie.pl/) and kujawsko-pomorskie (http://www.kujawsko-pomorskie.pl/)) is situtated at the lower waters of Vistula River. It covers the area of 36 262 km² (pomorskie voivodship: 18 293 km², kujawskopomorksie voivodship: 17 969 km²) (11.2 % of Poland s territory). The Region borders with five other voivodships: zachodnio-pomorskie, warminsko-mazurskie, mazowieckie, lódzkie and wielkopolskie. There are 4 260 000 inhabitants living in the Region (pomorskie voivodship: 2 192 000; kujawsko-pomorskie voivodship: 2 068 000), which constitute 11% of the country total population. The capital city of pomorskie voivodship is Gdansk, whereas of kujawsko-pomorskie voivodship Torun (the headquarters of the local voivodship authorities) and Bydgoszcz (headquarters of the voivodship government authorities). The administrative divide of the Region is as follows: pomorskie voivodship: 16 counties and four cities on the county rights and 123 communes kujawsko-pomorskie voivodship: 19 counties and four cities on the county rights and 144 communes The Northern Region is situated at the southern coast of the Baltic Sea. Its historical importance resulted from the Baltic sea commercial routes crossing with the land routes in this region 1

leading from Gdansk to the south. Development of the cities in the region was strictly connected with the primeval water route down the stream of the Vistula River and its side streams, which for ages had been acting as a highway for the huge territories of the present Poland, Ukraine and Byelorussia. Distinctness of the city centres of the Northern Region for centuries resulted from broad commercial and cultural contacts with the large sea trading centres of the Northern Europe. The cities of the Region have had a great tradition of tolerance and multi-cultural coexistence. It was here where nations, cultures and religions intermingled and peacefully coexisted. Traces of this culture dialogue can be easily found in specific layout of the cities, in multi-language inscriptions dedicated to their citizens who created the prosperity of the Region in its long history. Main Cities of the Region Gdansk (460 ths. citizens) capital of pomorskie voivodship Bydgoszcz (368 ths. citizens) Gdynia (250 ths. citizens) Torun (208 ths. citizens) Wloclawek (120 ths. citizens) Slupsk (99 ths. citizens) Monuments and tourist attractions The Northern Region is abound with tourist attractions. Both the culture monuments enthusiasts as well as tourists prepared for contact with the nature will find something of interest for them. The tourists searching for history and its traces will first of all get interested in Pomerania towns. In no way you shall miss two of them Gdansk and Torun. Gdansk, a city situated at the estuary of Vistula River and Gdansk Bay, is a one thousand years monument of many cultures and activities of a melting pot of nations that had created it. Its location in the middle of Europe, at the crossroads of the most important commercial routes as well as rich trading contacts with Poland and the whole Europe resulted in the citizens of the well-off city, of different cultures, creating a specific mixture of styles and tastes which traces we can observe till the present day. In spite of the tremendous damage inflicted to the historic substance just after the completion of warfare in 1945, the city was raised from the ruins in the post-war years and the structures saved from conflagration were subject to restoration, thanks to which today we may see great monuments of architecture inscribed in the Medieval urban layout. The following monuments, among other, are worth seeing: conurbation of the Main City with numerous examples of residential architecture pearls from the late Middle Ages to the turn of the XIX and XX century with a preserved streets network of a Hanseatic city; the sequence of Dluga and Dlugi Targ Streets with rich townsmen tenement houses, Main City Hall a monument comparable only with the Flemish town halls, Artus Palace headquarters of the city merchants and craftsmen associations, one of the most beautiful and the richest interior in Europe; Mariacki Church (Kosciól Mariacki) the biggest in the world sacral object constructed of bricks; Mariacka Street (ulica Mariacka) a place of architectural layout allowing to go back to the period of XVII-XVIII century; preserved elements of the city fortifications from the Middle Ages to the modern period. Torun, a city full of monuments, unlike Gdansk avoided damage in 1945 thus you can see there the original city substance with examples of almost all architectural styles. The most interesting places are: gothic churches of Saint John, the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Jacob 2

Old Town Hall and gothic townsmen tenement houses with Copernicus House among them the greatest astronomer of all times; perfectly preserved stretches of Medieval town walls and ruins of the Teutonic knights castle. Other towns of the region are also worth visiting, for example Bygdoszcz with preserved XIX century town buildings, or Gdynia monumental investment of post war Poland a splendid example of a city and port built from scratch which buildings perfectly presents the architectural trends prevailing in the 30 s of XX century. Scenery and climate The Northern Region is full of various scenery types: from picturesque lake lands with many a places, where one may enjoy contact with impeccable nature not too much polluted with civilization impact, to sea coast with wide beaches of white sand. The Region s area of the largest scenery diversity is Kaszuby. This area shall meet the tastes of the most choosy tourists. There is a legend telling that the God forgot about Kaszuby while creating the world, so when he got on to its creating, he gave it a bit of everything that had already been assigned for other places. Therefore Kaszuby have wide sea beaches, forests dotted with lakes and morena hills. Fans of fishing, horse riding, mountain trekking, sea bathing, bikes and other sports will surely find something to their interest. The explorers of the culture monuments will also satisfy their curiosity. The Region s climate is moderate, with winters milder compared to the centre of the continent, summers not so hot. USEFULL INFORMATION (PRACTICAL INFORMATION) 1. EMERGENCY SERVICES 997 Police 998 Fire brigade 999 Medical Emergency Service 986 City Guards 2. PUBLIC TRANSPORT Tram and bus The cities of the Northern Region have efficient public transportation systems. The way of making use of the public transportation means depends on the city and below you will find a general information thereon: Gdansk: The same transportation company provides both the tram and bus services. Ticket price depends on the travel length. While buying the ticket you should first look up at the stop the travel time between the stops you are interested in, and then purchase the ticket (preferably at the newsstand) of the proper time limit. Municipal transportation tickets in Gdansk have the following time limits: 10 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes and 24hours. 6

Detailed information on the municipal transportation in Gdansk in English (services map, current ticket prices, particular services timetables) is available at: http://www.zkm.pl/eng/ You should punch the ticket in punchers situated on the vehicles immediately after getting onto. Gdynia: Trams and buses operate on the territory of the city and adjoining communes. Ticket price is fixed for the whole route and depends on the service type (normal / express). Information concerning the transportation network, ticket prices and timetables is available at: www.zkmgdynia.pl. You should punch the ticket yourself at the puncher situated on the vehicles immediately after getting onto. Sopot: On the territory of Sopot there operate both the public transportation companies of Gdansk and Gdynia. Moreover, Gdansk, Gdynia and Sopot are connected with each other with a comfortable feeder train (SKM). The ticket price depends on the route length and you can look it up on tables situated on the train stations, nearby the tickets punchers. You should buy the ticket at the Ticket Desk at the train station, marked with the SKM logo. The passenger should punch the ticket at the puncher situated on the departure platforms there are no punchers in SKM cars! Bydgoszcz i Torun: In Bydgoszcz and Torun there operate both buses and trams. Ticket prices do not depend on the travel time nor the length of the route. You can buy tickets at newsstands and from the drivers. Detailed information on the timetables and tickets prices is available at: www.mzk.bydgoszcz.pl and www.mzk.torun.pl All municipal transportation operators have season ticket systems whose prices depend on the periods for which they are issued, however in the event of making use of public transportation on a regular basis buying a season ticket is cost-effective. Train The Northern Region has got good train service allowing to get to places at the whole territory of Poland as well as a few comfortable international services. Domestic railways are being served by separate companies belonging to the Group of Polish State Railways (PKP). Information concerning timetables and ticket prices is available at: http://www.pkp.pl Car The town centres of the Region usually constitute a paid parking zone. While parking a car at a public parking you should search for the parking ticket machine in which you can pay for parking with coins. Before buying a parking ticket you should first check what the hours of paid parking are, due to the fact that after the rush hours and on days off parking is usually free of charge. It is also possible to make use of guarded parking lots, where the price depends on individual terms for a given parking, usually provided on tables fixed at the entrance thereto. Taxi Making use of taxis is a bit more costly solution compared to the public transportation, but much comfortable for people having only a little knowledge of the city topography. So as to avoid dishonest taxi drivers one should keep away from taxi not belonging to registered taxi corporations (this particularly refers to taxi drivers offering their services nearby airports and railway stations). The best solution is to call a taxi via phone. You can get the numbers at any tourist information point. 3. ADDRESSES OF GOVERNMENT OFFICES 7

Apteka im. I. Lukasiewicza ul. Planu 6-Letniego 37 a, tel. (48 52) 361 18 55 At most of the shopping centres there operate pharmacies open also on Sundays and Holidays on condition that the whole centre is open on that day. 5. BANKS, PAYMENTS The Northern Region is covered with a thick network of agencies offering bank services. In the centre of any larger town one should easily find a bank branch. The Polish banks offer their Clients services at a level comparable with the one accepted in the rest of Europe. While choosing a bank one shall get acquainted with its offer in detail, particularly with the table of commissions and charges, since offers of the banks competing with each other may significantly differ. Every day one may make payments via debit cards (VISA, Master Card and other) that are accepted by most of the bank machines and at the constantly growing number of shopping points. Bank branches deal in currency exchange, however a bit more attractive exchange rates are offered by small private currency exchange agencies, called in Poland Kantor. Bank cheques are not being accepted for years at shopping centres. The only places where one may cash them are at present only branches of some banks. List of bank machines in the region is available at: http://www.karty.pl/bankomaty.php?wojewodztwo=pomorskie 6. POST OFFICE Every larger locality has got its own post office. In larger towns there are usually a few to dozen post offices. Their location corresponds to city divide into residential districts. Post offices are usually open in working days from 8.00 to 20.00, some operate on Saturdays from 8.00 to 15.00. 10.
