Pentecost Sunday May 24, 2015 I WAS THINKING In the right side of the Sacred Heart Shrine is the mosaic of Our Lady of Ostra Brama (Gate of Dawn). The mosaic is made of Venetian glass colored pieces. On the marble beneath the Our Lady of Ostra Brama mosaic is a gold lily symbolizing Mary s purity and virginity. The original of the holy image of Our Lady of Ostra Brama is housed in the chapel of the Gate of Dawn of Vilnius, Lithuania. The original painting is 64 in 79 in, and was painted by an unknown artist on 8 oak planks around It was covered with silver and gold around The head of Our Lady is adorned with two crowns. Two little angels lower the crown with colored glass inlays upon the smaller crown (the angels are not present on our mosaic, they are only on the original painting). The two crowns, made of pure gold, were blessed by Pope Pius XI in On July 2, 1927 a coronation ceremony took place and the painting received the title of Mother of Mercy. The painting is an unusual portrayal of Mary since she is depicted without the infant Jesus. The painting depicts the many facets of Mary. Her head is gently leaning to Her right, Her eyes are half closed, Her hands are crossed in devotion. This reminds us that She is a virgin, humble servant of the Lord, merciful Mother and patron of the people. At the same time, Her head is surrounded by a halo and a sun rays with twelve stars and there is a crescent moon on the bottom of the picture ( A great sign appeared in the sky, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars. Rev 12:1) and Her body is covered in elaborate gold and silver clothes and crowns. These are the symbols of Her divine and majestic role as the Queen of Heaven. The history of Our Lady of the Gate of Dawn, who is also known as Our Lady of Ostra Brama, begins in In that year prince Władysław Jagiełło ( ) of Lithuania married the Polish princess Jadwiga. As part of the contract for marriage Jagiełło pledged the conversion of the Lithuanian people to Christianity. The marriage resulted in the joining of Poland and Lithuania into a Commonwealth of Nations. With the advent of Christianity, Marian devotions were introduced by princess Jadwiga. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (or The Commonwealth of the Two Nations, Rzeczpospolita Oboja Narodów in Polish) was a federal monarchy-republic formed by the Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania and which was governed by an elected monarch. Due to frequent attacks on the Lithuanian lands from the Tatars and regular conflicts with the Grand Duchy of Moscow, in 1503 Grand Duke Alexander of Lithuania

2 SS. Peter and Paul News Page 2 granted the city of Vilnius a privilege to build fortifications of brick and stone around the entire city. The Gate of Dawn was built between 1503 and 1522 as a part of these defensive fortifications for the city of Vilnius. It has also been known as the Medininkai Gate, as it led to the village Medininkai south of Vilnius. In the Lithuanian language this gate was commonly known as Auros Vartai (the gate of dawn). The Polish speaking population knew it as Ostra Brama (the sharp gate). Of the nine city gates, only the Gate of Dawn remains, while the others were destroyed. There is no doubt that the Gate of Dawn is an exceptionally holy shrine with many miraculous cures and healings attributed to this shrine. The shrine is the first place where the Image of Divine Mercy was exposed for the first time and also where the first celebration of the Feast of Mercy took place. St. Faustina also saw the image of the Mother of Mercy come alive and Our Lady spoke beautiful words encouraging her to continue to fulfil the will of Her Son. It was customary in Vilnius while St. Faustina lived there to attend novenas and special Masses at the Gate of Dawn. In the Diary of St. Faustina, she makes many references to praying at the Gate of Dawn and before the beautiful image of the Mother of Mercy. On September 4, 1993 Saint John Paul II said Rosary at the Gate of Dawn Chapel. The Feast of Our Lady of Ostra Brama is celebrated on November 16. Mother of Mercy, pray for us! Bóg dał Apostołom moc do przebaczania i jednania się, ponieważ trwali na jednym miejscu. Gdy po raz pierwszy Jezus tchnął w nich Ducha, aby byli zdolni odpuszczać grzechy, stało się to tam, gdzie przebywali razem. Bez Boga nie potrafimy sobie przebaczać, trwać w jedności mimo różnic. Kościół jest nam potrzebny, abyśmy mogli doświadczać pomocy Ducha Świętego, by ciągle sobie przebaczać i kochać się wzajemnie, mimo różnorodności. Duch przychodzi, gdy wydaje się, że tracimy Jezusa. Duch Święty przyszedł do uczniów wtedy, gdy Jezus miał za sobą Golgotę i gdy wstąpił do nieba. Uczniom pozostała już tylko modlitwa. Kiedy po raz pierwszy stracili Go z oczu i został pochowany w grobie, została im świadomość beznadziejności. Byli przerażeni i ścigani. Drzwi były zamknięte z lęku przed ludźmi, przed represjami. Zamknięte drzwi to wymowny obraz odcięcia się od wszystkich, zawiedzenia się na życiu, rezygnacji z wychodzenia innym naprzeciw, wycofania. Gdy wojska wycofują się z frontu, wiadomo, że oznacza to klęskę. Wycofujemy się, gdy przeżyliśmy porażkę. Zamykamy drzwi, gdy chcemy uciec, bo wszyscy nas ranią i wszystko stało się pułapką budzącą naszą podejrzliwość. Zamknięte drzwi to zamknięty w sobie człowiek, który już nie wierzy w to, że cokolwiek w życiu mu się uda. W takich chwilach myślimy, że Bóg naprawdę umarł albo przestał się nami interesować, a my umarliśmy dla Niego albo nic dla Niego nie znaczymy. Są więc takie chwile, gdy najwspanialsze nadzieje zostają ścięte jak olbrzymie drzewa, waląc się z hukiem na piaszczystą ziemię, rozpacz wylewa się jak ropa z rany, a ciemność jest namacalna niczym lepka smoła. Z lęku zamykamy się w sobie i stajemy się niedostępni jak wierzchołek skały. Nikomu nie pozwalamy się zbliżyć do siebie. Właśnie wtedy przybywa Duch Święty z pomocą, którą jest On sam! Ptaki przecież siadają na wierzchołkach gór, na niedostępnych miejscach! Jak gołębie układają gniazda z połamanych gałązek, tak Duch Święty bierze pod swoje skrzydła ludzi połamanych zwątpieniem, złamanych bólem - czyni w nich swoje gniazdo. Jezus przyszedł mimo zabarykadowanych drzwi, mimo tego, że już nikt nie miał siły do nich się choćby zbliżyć ani ich otworzyć. Śmierć najdroższej im osoby, śmierć Jezusa, wydawała się być czymś nieodwracalnym. Nikt przecież dotąd nigdy nie powrócił z cmentarza. To stało się po raz pierwszy. Czy wierzysz, że Pan wskrzesza umarłych? Czy wierzysz, że wskrzesi umarłą nadzieję w tobie i umarłą odwagę życia? Bo przecież nie wiadomo, co bardziej przypominało mogiłę: Wieczernik, w którym zatrwożeni Apostołowie zamarli z lęku, czy grób Józefa z Arymatei, w którym spoczywało ciało Chrystusa? O. 3 SS. Peter and Paul News Page 3 our operating hours. This year, the Archdiocese has set a goal for our parish of $15,022. If we exceed our target, any excess will be returned directly to our parish. While we did not exceed our target goal of $16,033 in 2014, the lowering of the target goal will help for us to at least reduce the shortfall we are obliged to pay from our general fund. We know that we are all are continuing to experience difficult times financially, but if everyone pitches in this will make a big difference to both Church finances and as well to all the important ministries and programs, some of which are listed below (we will list even more in next weeks bulletin). Indeed, your generous gift to the CSA will do so much for so many. The budget for the 2015 Catholic Services Appeal is $17,839,175. Your gifts to the CSA are used solely and exclusively to support 117 Archdiocesan ministries, programs, and services as well as certain national collections of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. No CSA dollars have ever been or ever will be used to support projects outside of the Archdiocese, other than those USCCB national collections, or to settle claims of any nature against the Archdiocese. The Archdiocesan lay Finance Council oversees the distribution of CSA funds to ensure that all reach the ministries, programs, and services for which they are intended. During the Sunday Masses you will hear the singing of the Sequence for Pentecost. Sequences are medieval hymns originally sung to accompany long Gospel processions. These hymns offer rich, interpretive poetry relevant to the day s feast. Sequences flourished as a poetic and musical outlet for creativity in the liturgy; by the fifteenth century, hundreds of fine examples existed in various local churches. The Council of Trent, setting out to simplify and unify the Roman liturgy, reduced the number of sequences to five: Victimae Paschali Laudes (Easter), Veni Sancte Spiritus (Pentecost), Lauda Sion Salvatorem (Corpus Christi), Stabat Mater (Our Lady of Sorrows) and Dies Irae (Requiem/funeral Mass). The reforms of the Second Vatican Council eliminated the Dies Irae (although it is used now in the Liturgy of the Hours), and made Lauda Sion and Stabat Mater optional. So, the Victimae Paschali and Veni Sancte Spiritus are required elements of the liturgy, to be sung before the Alleluia. Worship Ministry Did you child recently receive First Holy Communion?
