5 1. Basic information about the institute 1.1. Institute activity The Institute of Computer and Information Systems has existed since 1994 and is a unit of the Faculty of Cybernetics at the Military University of Technology (WAT). The Institute s research and didactic employees are mainly graduates of WAT, the majority having at least the title of Doctor of Technical Sciences. They are wanted in the job market of specialists, employed in key public institutions and private enterprises in positions related to the deployment of information systems. The main areas of activity of the Institute are: teaching students at an engineering, master s and doctoral level scientific and research work projects and implementation. The teaching is conducted in form of stationary studies (during the day), non-stationary (weekends) and a postgraduate Computer Science studies, in three specialties: information systems, information systems management and command support systems (for MND). Specialty Information Systems educates future analysts, programmers, designers, testing specialists, and IT consultants in the areas of: 1) structural methodologies and object-oriented systems development, 2) design and implementation of concurrent software, 3) designing relational and object-oriented databases, 4) design and implementation of process automating systems, 5) computer networks and operating systems software, 6) methods of computer simulation, 7) expert systems and neural networks, 8) models, methods and decision support tools and their practical applications, 9) methods of parallel and distributed computing, 10) methods of assessing the reliability of computer systems, 11) methods of ensuring information systems security. Specialty Management Information Systems educates future information management systems designers, consultants for IT management processes as well as implementation and improvement of systems management organization, specialists for quality assurance and information security in the area of: 1) information processes in an enterprise, 2) designing computer aided methods, monitoring and visualization of business processes, 3) business processes re-engineering, 4) designing relational and object-oriented databases, 5) ensuring efficiency of business processes, 6) structural methodologies and object-oriented systems development, 7) models and methods of planning and scheduling processes, 8) methods of computer simulation, expert systems, selected models and methods of operational research and their practical applications.... 1

Specialty Command support systems educates (for MND Ministry of National Defense) future analysts, programmers, designers, IT specialists for informatization command processes in the area of: 1) structural methodologies and object-oriented systems development, 2) operating of automated systems command and control systems, 3) methods of computer simulation, expert systems and neural networks, 4) selected models, methods and decision support tools and their practical applications, 5) methods of parallel and distributed computing, 6) designing relational and object-oriented databases, designing and using battlefield simulators and command support systems, 7) methods for ensuring the security of information systems. Practical classes are held with students in the Faculty of Cybernetics laboratories that are fitted with modern equipment. Students use PC work stations with software for accessing the Internet and information systems used in the teaching process. The scientific work and research at the Institute of Computer and Information Systems are carried out in the field of: designing decision support information systems modeling and algorithmisizing decision-making processes in conflict and crisis situations modeling and designing medical decision support systems building simulation models of complex systems (technical, informational, economical, combat) methods and tools for designing information systems methods and tools for designing databases database systems and data warehousing designing distributed systems building intelligent security systems modeling and simulation of mobile telecommunication networks application of methods of artificial intelligence and operational research software engineering information management systems efficiency, operation and improvement of information systems software reliability mobile systems analysis and design of photonic data transmission systems. In order to obtain and complete research tasks in accordance with the decision of the Chancellor of WAT at the Institute of Computer and Information Systems two teams were appointed: Research Team for Modeling, Simulation and Decision Support in Conflict and Crisis Situations (under the direction of Andrzej Najgebauer) and Research Team of Numerical Analyses and Processing of Video Information in Decision Support Systems in Medicine (under the direction of Andrzej Walczak). On the basis of an adequate supply of personnel and equipment base, these units offer the services of design and implementation, perform research, analyses and expertise in their respective specialties. SAS Institute Polska, Credit Information Bureau, Warsaw University of Technology, The Main School of Fire Service (SGSP), National Defense University, University of Białystok, Rzeszów University of Technology, University of Information Technology and Management in Rzeszow, Military Communication Institute, Przemysłowy Instytut Telekomunikacji, Centrum Techniki Morskiej, Southampton University in the UK and the Institute of Physics at the University of Kiev. In 2012 the Institute completed three projects and one research paper: 1) own research project (No. N ) entitled Tunable and reconfigurable micro-optoelectronic signal switching system for photonics and telecommunications; 2) project financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the Innovative Economy Operational Programme (POIG /08) entitled Construction of modern ICT application to support research in the field of innovative diagnostics and treatment of civilization diseases; 3) development project (No. A-0937-RT-GC) entitled Asymmetric Threat Environment Analysis (through Asymmetric Engagement Modeling, Modeling of Impacts on Hearts & Minds, and Threat Scenario Generation from environmental factors) (ATHENA); 4) research work (No. RMN /2012/WAT) entitled Modeling, simulation and analysis of processes of viral nature network systems. Seven projects and four research works are still in progress: 1) development project (No. O ROB /ID 1/3) entitled Development of modern training posts increasing the effectiveness of KSRG rescue operations; 2) development project (No. O ROB /ID 21/2) entitled Modern technologies for/in the criminal proceedings and their use technical, forensic, criminology and legal aspects; 3) research project (No. PBU/01-115/2012/WAT) entitled Fire Control System Simulator of Tower HITFIST-30P to SK-1 Pluton KTO Rosomak Simulator; 4) development project (No /2012/WAT) entitled Advanced information systems technologies supporting the processes of data analysis (mainly financial) in the area of financial crime; 5) development project (No /2012/WAT) entitled The IT support system for capacity development and identification of operational needs of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland; 6) Applied Research Programme project (No. PBST/27-269/2012/WAT) entitled System for simulation activities support and improving procedures in the activities of the sanitary supervision authorities in cases of poisoning and infectious diseases transmitted orally; 7) project financed from the European Regional Development Fund under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment (POIS /12) entitled Reconstruction of building No. 65 for the needs of the Center for Advanced Studies in Systems Engineering WAT Warsaw; 8) research work (No. PBS /2012/WAT) entitled Modeling and design of information systems for the purposes of state defense and national economy; 9) research work (No. RMN /2011) entitled Sensory data fusion method using semantic models and methods of artificial intelligence; 10) research project (No. RMN /2012/WAT) entitled Numerical models of electromagnetic propagation in hyperspectral photonic hitchers;... 3

Researchers of the Institute of Information Systems are the authors of numerous publications. In 2012, the total of 74 publications were published, among them: two articles published in magazines featured in the JCR, 34 articles published in peer-reviewed periodicals listed in the MNiSW in list B, and 33 chapters in books. According to the publishing calendar, we published two more issues of a scientific journal Bulletin of the Institute of Information Systems. Our Bulletin is a reviewed journal, in which original works in the field of computer science and operational research are published. It is indexed in BazTech and Index Copernicus (ICV ratio for 2011 is 2.81.) In September last year, the Institute of Information Systems organized a scientific conference entitled "Systems Engineering 2012". The meeting was attended by representatives of companies and public institutions, including: Bumar Group, Centre for Health Information Systems, Department of Information Systems and Telecommunications of the Defense Ministry, the City Hall of Radom, KGSP, BIK. The conference focused on the design of complex IT systems. The conference also raised issues of faculty collaboration with commercial companies and public institutions in such areas as: energy security, smart urban management, optimization of road and rail transport, optimization of business processes in the mining industry, emergency response. Chairman of the organizing committee of the conference was T. Górski. For many years, the Institute of Information Systems together with the Department of Information Systems Management (Faculty of Management, Warsaw University) and the Department of Computer Science for Economics (College of Economic Analysis SGH) leads International Seminar entitled "Problems of research and development projects of informatization of the state". The head of organizational development and scientific seminar is B. Szafrański. In 2012, like in previous years, student research teams from WCY WAT participated in international IT competitions, trade fairs and exhibitions of inventions, where they presented their projects. The biggest success in 2012 was the winning of four gold medals for projects: SAPER and SENSE at the International iena Fair in Nuremberg, SIIF in Seoul and the International Warsaw Inventions Exhibition IWIS. In addition to the medals the SAPER project was awarded two special prizes. Projects were developed by teams: ARMED (Army Engineers and Developers) and InnoWATors under the direction of a mentor M. Chmielewski. A real success was also the participation of both teams in an international technology competition Imagine Cup In the national finals of the competition in the most prestigious category Software Design our teams ranked 1st and 2nd and qualified for the second stage of the competition held in Sydney. Another place among the European leaders took a team from the WCY WAT under the direction of R. Kasprzyk. Our young scientists during the 5th edition of the international competition Google Online Marketing Challenge were among the fifteen best teams in Europe. The participants of the competition were to conduct an advertising campaign on the Internet using Google AdWords tools for any company. The WAT Chancellor recognizing outstanding achievements of M. Chmielewski and R. Kasprzyk in the development of students' scientific movement, during the celebration of National Education Day in 2012, honored them with the Chancellor's Award. 4...

Like every year, the celebration of the Polish Armed Forces Day was an opportunity to grant the staff and civilian employees of WAT state decorations and medals awarded by the Defense Ministry. Bronze Cross of Merit went to major M. Chmielewski. Medals "The Armed Forces in the Service of the Fatherland" for exemplary service or work in the Polish Army, were given to: gold medals M. Kiedrowicz and K. Worwa silver medal B. Fedyna. In recognition of his merits in the development and strengthening of defense of Poland, medals "For Merit for National Defence" were awarded to: silver medal T. Górski bronze medal M. Mazurek. In 2012, at the Institute of Information Systems 47 engineers and 75 masters were promoted. Four employees received degrees of Doctor of Technical Sciences: 1) M. Chmielewski (doctoral thesis entitled Ontology-based indirect association assessment method using graph and logic reasoning techniques); 2) R. Kasprzyk (doctoral thesis entitled Models of the evolution of complex systems and methods of testing their characteristics for the computer identification of potential emergency situations); 3) R. Waszkowski (doctoral thesis entitled Methods and tools of IT support for assessing the productivity of a team in IT projects); 4) J. Wiśniewska (doctoral thesis entitled Decision support algorithm with the concept of the application of adequate quantum computing). A degree of doctor habilitated of technical sciences and professor at WAT was given to Z. Tarapata. Habilitation thesis entitled Models and Algorithms for Knowledge-Based Decision Support and Simulation in Defense and Transport Applications won first place in the fourteenth edition of the competition of the Minister of Transport, Construction and Maritime Economy for the best habilitation thesis in the field of "Transport" and first place in the competition of the Chancellor of WAT, in the academic year 2011/2012. In 2012, we chose the new authorities of WAT. The director of the Institute of Information Systems, in the term , dean of the Faculty of Cybernetics at WAT prof. J. Gawinecki appointed Z. Tarapata. Deputy directors of the Institute became: M. Kiedrowicz and J. Stanik and managers of the departments: A. Walczak (Department of Software Engineering), T. In essence the department is responsible for almost thirty subjects of all kinds of studies at the Faculty of Cybernetics in WAT and outside. The department has high-class specialists in the fields of: algorithms programming techniques database systems operating systems distributed processing computer networks data security in computer systems decision support IT technology for the internet e-business infrastructure software. They deal with these subjects during classes, active research, as well as work in the computer business, where they are valued experts. Research interests revolve around the following issue: programming languages and techniques (structural, object-oriented, concurrent) database systems (object-oriented, temporal, distributed) system mechanisms for data servers techniques of communication and distribution of load in distributed systems methods of quality testing of concurrent programs system software structure wide area network and internet technology designing and integrating distributed systems designing and operating mobile systems designing and operating groupware systems and automation of business processes electronic data and electronic documents exchange technology data protection policy in information systems decision support systems semantic networks and artificial intelligence. The presented subject-matter is reflected in the work of doctoral theses, articles in the specialist magazines, papers at national and international scientific conferences, as well as books. Analysis and modeling of business processes. 2. Analytical methods in management. 3. IT systems in management. 4. Enterprise architecture and integration platforms. 5. Quality management and information security systems.
