Polish University Sports Association
Dear Friends The University Sports Association (AZS) is the biggest students organization in Poland. AZS as the association was established in 1909 in Kraków. As precursor of university sport movement, the AZS has actively participated in international students sport events since the very beginning. The Students World Championships of 1924, considered as first university championships, have been organized in Warsaw. After the Second World War when the International University Sport Federation FISU was created, AZS was among the first federations to join it. Nowadays AZS Poland has got over 42 000 members, main board in Warsaw, 17 regional boards, over 250 university clubs. Our crème de la crème is the professional sport. AZS members are sport stars, well-known across the globe. Our athletes win medals at the biggest events, where they consists even up to 30% of the Polish national team. The first gold Olympic medal for Poland was won by Halina Konopacka (athletic sports, AZS Warszawa, 1928). Of 285 Olympic medals that Poland has won, 80 have been won by athletes of AZS clubs. In the Universiades our students have reached altogether 424 medals until now: 118 gold, 139 silver and 167 bronze (in the Winter Universiades 35 gold, 42 silver and 49 bronze). Every year we host international EUSA and FISU competitions. The most important were two Winter Universiades in Zakopane (1993 and 2001). Poland has also organized 21 events of World University Championships and 17 events of European Universities Championships. In 2014 AZS Poland will organise World University Chess (Katowice), Cycling (Jelenia Góra) and Archery (Legnica) Championships. In 2015 we will host European Universities Tennis (Wrocław), Futsal (Poznań), Badminton and Bridge Championships (Warsaw). One of the most important aspects of our interests is a common sport. Since more than 50 years we organize Academic Championships of Poland (AMP), which promote sport among students. The best of them receive their opportunities to compete in European Championships. AMP at present gathers over 200 collages, more than 40 disciplines and 80 nationwide tournaments, with over 15 000 students. Looking at the AZS from the perspective of these 100 years of history, it must be said that the organizations youngest generation is faithful to the ideals and the rules of university sport defined by its predecessors and brings into the precincts of the universities a sparkle of youth, joy and strength.
